It marked the first victory for UNC s seniors against the Fighting Sioux. Dunn Continues To Get It Done The North Dakota defense tried to slow senior defensive end Anthony Dunn but he was still able to track down Fighting Sioux quarter Kelby Klosterman in the contest. Dunn tallied 1 1/2 sacks to move to 21 1/2 in his career at UNC to rank fifth on UNC s all-time sack list. The D Dominates Through two games against Division II opponents, the UNC defense has not allowed the opposing offense to crack the endzone. UND s touchdown on Saturday came on a fumble by the UNC offense. The Bears defense has allowed two field goals, both to UND, so far this season against Division II opponents. Hawkins Sits vs. North Dakota Senior running back Tyler Hawkins (Palisade, Colo./Palisade HS) sat out Saturday s game against the Fighting Sioux as he recovered from a slight concussion against Montana one week earlier. Head coach Kay Dalton said Hawkins had been cleared to play vs. North Dakota but was only going to be used in an emergency situation. Matthews Makes Most Of Starting Gig Junior running back Adam Matthews (Northglenn, Colo./Northglenn HS) made the most of his starting assignment on Saturday as he rushed for a team season-high 64 yards. He also scored a pair of touchdowns in the game (1-rushing, 1-receiving). It was just the second start in Matthews career at UNC. Last season, Matthews started the first game of the season at Western State and rushed for 134 yards. His two touchdowns on Saturday gives him four career UNC scores. Rohloff Scores A Quick Six Junior outside linebacker Cabel Rohloff (Bailey, Colo./Platte Canyon HS) enjoyed a moment in the sun on Saturday as he scooped up a fumble by North Dakota s Chris Beatty and rumbled into the endzone for his first career touchdown. Rohloff was a second team All-NCC pick last season. He ranks fourth on the team this season with 14 tackles and has tallied one quarterback sack. Cutlip Takes Starting Reins Junior transfer quarterback Steve Cutlip (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West HS) was given his first collegiate start on Saturday. Cutlip passed for 205 yards on 17-of-26 passing and three one touchdown. Cutlip ranks third in the North Central Conference in passing yards per game (143.7). Carroll Climbs the Receiving Charts Senior receiver George Carroll is closing in on the UNC school record for career receiving yards. Carroll needs just 367 yards to become UNC s all-time leader in receiving yards. He is fourth on the all-time receptions list with 108 career catches. Arvada West Connection The Bears will be making the most of their connection to Arvada West High School this fall as Eric Nelson, Ryan Palmer, Steve Cutlip and Brad Pyatt all take the field in the Blue and Gold. Nelson will be a senior receiver, while Palmer will be a sophomore linebacker. Both Cutlip and Pyatt are first-year players for the Bears but saw time as Division I players at Colorado State and Kentucky, respectively. Preseason Accolades The Bears have received plenty of attention this preseason in regard to the team and individuals. UNC was picked to finish third in the NCC Preseason Coaches Poll. The Bears were tabbed for fourth in the NCC according the conference media poll. UNC was ranked No. 27 in the preseason American Football Coaches Association Poll and are ranked No. 15 in the preseason D2Football.com poll. Sophomore receiver/returner Vincent Jackson has been named to the secondteam All-America squad released by D2Football.com.

UNC vs. North Dakota Recap (9/21/02) 19. Catawba (N.C.) GREELEY, Colo. - The No. 25 ranked University of Northern Colorado football team built an 20. Central Washington early 21-0 lead against 16th ranked North Dakota, the defending NCAA Division II champions, 21. Shepherd (W.Va.) and hung on to win to snap a three game losing streak to the Fighting Sioux in the North 22. Missouri Western Central Conference opener for both squads. 23. Bloomsburg (Pa.) UNC (2-1, 1-0 NCC) and UND (2-2, 0-1) were locked in a defensive battle much of the first 24. Chadron State quarter as neither team could muster and offensive threat through the game s first six possessions. 25. Northern Colorado On the Bears third possession, sophomore punter Chad Harter hit a perfect punt that settled on the Fighting Sioux s own four-yard line. On their first play, UND s Chris Beatty had the ball stripped and UNC junior linebacker Cabel Rohloff recovered the ball and went one-yard for the game s first touchdown. On the day, Rohloff was credited with six tackles, two for a loss of ten total yards, and a sack for a loss of eight yards besides his fumble recovery. Including that score, UNC would go on to score on three consecutive possessions to push the lead to 21-0 before UND knew what hit them. After the first score, junior quarterback Steve Cutlip, getting his first start of the season, completed six of seven passes for 70 yards in a 2:25 stretch, including a seven-yarder to junior running back Adam Matthews for a score. Following a UND punt, Cutlip lead another drive down the field that resulted in sophomore running back Ty Ray Thompson rushing six yards to paydirt to push the Bear advantage to North Dakota finally hit the board with 6:11 remaining before halftime as kicker Jeff Glas nailed a 53-yard field goal attempt. Following a UNC punt, the Bears got the ball back quickly, as redshirt freshman defensive back Reed Doughty recovered a fumble at the UND 12-yard line. Five plays later, UNC was back in the endzone, thanks to another score from Matthews, this time from one-yard out to extend the Bear advantage to its zenith at Overall, the Bears scored on four of five consecutive possessions in the first half. The Fighting Sioux added its next points on another long field goal from Glas, this time a 46-yarder at the 4:19 mark of the third quarter to trim the UNC advantage to UND would score its only touchdown of the day in the fourth quarter when Thompson fumbled for the Bears and UND s Josh Brandsted recovered and rumbled 74-yards for a touchdown. UND s two-point conversion attempt would fail, however, making the games final score Through two games against NCAA Division II opponents this season, UNC has not allowed an offensive touchdown by their opposition. In his first start of the season, Cutlip passed for 205 yards on passing and a score. Backup Mark Passard came into the game in the second half, completing 7-8 passes for 72 yards.
