1 THE DOPE SHEET OFFICIAL PUBLICITY, GREEN BAY PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL CLUB VOL. V; NO. 23 GREEN BAY, DEC. 30, 2003 WILD-CARD PLAYOFF GAME FOR THE RECORD, IT WAS A MIRACLE: On a day dripping with irony, the Packers playing their best football of the season during a 4-0 December were at the mercy of an official s judgement call, 2,002 miles from Lambeau Field in Tempe, Ariz. Few (if any) Packers players and coaches, focused simply on winning their game and not on games out of their control, had any idea what was happening during the first 58 minutes of the Cards-Vikings game. Neither were they aware (nor did they understand) that the wrong teams had won the early games, allowing Seattle to clinch a tiebreaker with Dallas that terminated Green Bay s wild card hopes even before it kicked off with Denver. But Arizona erased an 11-point deficit in the final 1:54, scoring two touchdowns and recovering an onside kick. Playing valiantly for head coach Dave McGinnis, the Cards scored the game-winning touchdown on fourthand-25, with time expired, when Josh McCown hit Nate Poole on a 28-yard pass. Poole got only one foot down, but the official ruled the Vikings pushed him out of bounds touchdown. The replay official upstairs confirmed Poole had possession, sending the Packers to the playoffs. Arizona lost the No. 1 pick in the 2004 draft, but not the Packers eternal gratitude. MOST PLAYOFF APPEARANCES SINCE 93: Since the dawn of the salary cap and unrestricted free agency, no other team has been to the playoffs more than the Packers: Green Bay San Francisco Miami Minnesota Pittsburgh Dallas Denver New England Indianapolis Philadelphia MOST DIVISION CROWNS: The Packers own a share of the NFL s most division championships since 1995: 5 Green Bay NFC Central , NFC North Pittsburgh AFC Central , 2001; AFC North New England AFC East , 2001, 2003 PRESTIGIOUS RUSHING RECORDS EVAPORATE: The Packers, brandishing one of the most prolific rushing offenses in the history of Bill Walsh s West Coast ancestry, on Sunday etched themselves further into the fabric of Packers annals. Ahman Green, who d previously broken the 41-year-old single-season mark, erased Andy Uram s 64-year-old record when he ran for a 98-yard touchdown. In the process, the Packers broke their single-season rushing record, which also stood for 41 years. Since Ahman Green s idol, Walter Payton, retired after the 1987 season, only four NFL teams have posted more rushing yards in a season: 2,774 Pittsburgh Steelers ,710 Cincinnati Bengals ,669 Baltimore Ravens ,629 Denver Broncos ,558 Green Bay Packers 2003 USUALLY IN EM: Green Bay has held a lead in 14 of its 15 games, the last 14 in a row. The only game in which the Packers did not lead was the opener, a loss to Minnesota. PACKERS POST WINNING ROAD RECORD: For only the eighth time over the last 39 seasons, the Packers finished with a winning road record. In each of those seasons, the Packers have advanced to the postseason. The Packers (4-for-17,.235) ranked second. Opponents have converted only one of their last 10 on fourth down against Green Bay. DEFENSE FINISHES: Over the last eight games, the Packers defense has allowed just 114 points. Only the Patriots (109) gave up fewer over the season s last half. GAME-OPENING DRIVES: Sunday s contest features two of the NFL s top three clubs in scoring out of the gates. Seattle leads the NFL with 52 points (seven TD, one FG) on its initial offensive drives. Green Bay is third with 48 points (six TD, two FG). Tennessee (49 points, five TD, five FG) is second. Cincinnati was the only other club to score at least six TD on game-opening drives. In six games this season, the Packers have driven for a touchdown on their opening possession, including the last two contests. 6 BEST OVERALL RED-ZONE TEAM: The Packers spend countless hours on red-zone preparations, on both sides of the ball. In 2003, it paid off. The Packers were the only NFL team to finish in the Top 5 in both red-zone offense (second) and red-zone defense (fifth). RED-ZONE OFFENSE: Only one other NFL team, Kansas City (.778, 42 touchdowns, 54 possessions) posted a better red-zone percentage than Tom Rossley s Green Bay unit (.654, 34-for-52). RED-ZONE DEFENSE: Green Bay opponents have scored just three touchdowns in their last 18 red-zone possessions (.167; since Nov. 16 at Tampa Bay). The Packers (.391) rank second in the NFC in red-zone defense, behind Tampa Bay (.350). They re fifth in the NFL. DANGEROUS OUTSIDE THE 20, TOO: The Packers (136) tallied more points from outside the opponent red zone than any NFL team. Minnesota (135) ranked second. GOAL-TO-GO OFFENSE: Green Bay (.808, 21 touchdowns, 26 situations) is the fifth-most efficient NFL team in goal-to-go possessions. The Packers have converted their last nine goal-to-go penetrations into touchdowns, and 10 of their last 11. Seattle (.818, 27/33) ranks fourth. GOAL-TO-GO DEFENSE: The Packers posted a.519 goalline stand percentage (14 touchdowns, 27 situations) and ranked second in the NFL. Only Miami (12/27,.444) was better. Green Bay has allowed just one touchdown in opponents last seven goal-to-go series. BIG WINS, CLOSE LOSSES: The Packers were among league leaders in both largest margin of victory and smallest margin of defeat. Green Bay won its 10 games by an average of 17.4 points, second in the NFL behind San Francisco (20.1). In six losses, the Packers average margin of defeat was just 6.5 points, tied for the lowest in the NFL with Indianapolis. The Packers outscored opponents , by 135 points. That figure ranked second in the league behind Kansas City, who outscored its foes by 152 points ( ). GREEN BAY ANGELS: The Packers were the NFC s leastpenalized team (88 flags), and ranked third in the NFL behind the Jets (69) and Chiefs (79). Three of Mike Sherman s four teams ( ) have been flagged 88 times or less. TURNOVER RATIO TILTS PACKERS WAY: Mike Sherman s teams are an incredible plus-32 in turnover ratio in regular-season games Dec. 1 and later. Sherman s Packers were plus-12 in 2003, plus-5 in 2002, plus-12 in 2001 and plus-3 in 2000, and have played only three contests with a negative turnover ratio (vs. Tampa Bay in 2000, vs. Minnesota in 2002 and at N.Y. Jets in 2002). The Packers are plus-12 in turnover ratio over their last four games, all wins. Green Bay is plus-15 in its 10 wins. The Packers are minus-15 in their six losses. By breaking Hutson s record Dec. 14, Longwell reached 100 points and became one of only three players ever to reach the century mark in each of his first seven seasons (joining Jason Elam and Adam Vinatieri). On Nov. 23, he surpassed Jacke (173, ) for first on the Packers all-time field goal list. Arizona wins, Oct. 12 vs. Kansas City: With 9 minutes left in regulation, Green Bay up and in fieldgoal range, Favre s pass deflects off Donald Driver s hands and Jerome Woods 79-yard touchdown return steals the Packers momentum at a critical juncture, en route to overtime. Oct. 12 vs. Kansas City: On the Packers first overtime play, Ahman Green breaks several tackles and appears headed deep into Chiefs territory when Woods perfectly timed hit knocks the ball out of Green s hands. One play later, the Chiefs score the game-winning touchdown. Nov. 10 vs. Philadelphia: The Packers defense holds the Eagles to 3 points and seven punts on their first 10 possessions.
