Archbishop Moeller intercepted two passes and recovered an onside kick to garner their first win versus the Wildcats. Crusader quarterback Thomas MacVittie threw for a school record 475 yards and 6 touchdowns, while tight end Jake Hausmann was on the receiving end of 7 of MacVittie passes for 183 yards and 3 scores. Defensively the Crusaders were aided by two interceptions by Tyler Burandt, including the game-clincher with 2 seconds left. For Archbishop Moeller, numerous players had big games including running back Hunter Hughes who had 4 catches for 113 yards and 11 carries for 39 yards. Archbishop Moeller fell behind, late in second quarter when the comeback started. The Crusaders cut the Wildcats lead to 17 after MacVittie found tight end Matt Dotson for a 15-yard strike with 2:17 left in the half. After an onside kick that the Crusaders recovered, wide receiver Kyle Butz took a jet sweep and found pay dirt from 2 yards out to pull the Crusaders within 10 with 1:36 left in the half. The Crusader retained possession 24 seconds later after 3 incompletions by the Wildcats to set-up a 11 yard touchdown pass from MacVittie to Ashmore to cut the Wildcats lead to with 37 seconds left in the half.. Big Moe took the lead for the first time at on a 16-yard pass from MacVittie to Ashmore. The Wildcats regained the lead on a 13-yard run by quarterback Dennis Grosel, The Crusaders answered right back with on 76-yard pass from MacVittie to Hausmann to take the lead with 5:45 left in the third quarter. The Wildcats jumped back out in front late in the third quarter following a MacVittie interception on 24 yard pass from Grosel to wide receiver James Leyden to lead entering the final quarter. Big Moe s Matt Coghlin hit a 36-yard field goal with 3:31 left in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 52. The Wildcats went for it on 4th and 1 at their own 29 on the ensuing possession and were stopped by the Crusaders. This setup Coghlin for a game winning 26- yard field goal with 10 seconds left to give the Crusaders a victory.

The result, a resounding win for the Crusaders in the 19th edition of the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown. The Crusaders balanced attack on offense and stifling defense were both on display. The Crusaders racked up a 240 yards on the ground and 198 through the air in the win. Archbishop Moeller s first score of the 2016 season came on a 30 yard pass from sophomore quarterback, Miles McBride to senior tight end, Matt Dotson with 23 seconds left in the 1st quarter to pull the Crusaders within one at 7-6. The Crusaders defense was showcased in the 2nd quarter forcing three Lakota West turnovers (Kelly, Hayden Horter and Meiser interceptions) and turning them into 14 points for a 20-7 lead at the break. The Crusaders began tbe game the same way thier week one game against Lakota West began with a long return on the opening kickoff against from Michael Mock. Archbishop Moeller capitlized on this return an punched through a field goal to take a 3-0 lead early in the game. This was the only lead of the game the Crusaders would enjoy, as on the Crusaders 2nd possesion, senior Evan Ernst s pass was picked off by Dwayne Morris for 50 yard interception return to give the Warriors a 7-3 lead. The Warriors would add to their lead less than 2 minutes later on a 44 yard pass from RaShad McKee to Ray James to extend the lead to The Crusaders responded with a 7 yard touchdown pass from Ernst to junior Colin Thurman to close the margin to 4 at This was the closest the Crusaders would get as the Warriors scored the first 14 points of the second half extending their lead to The Crusaders crawled back within 11 on a 2 yard pass from Ernst to junior wide out Jaxson Hayes to make it The Warriors rounded out th scoring with a 49 yard run by Fred Pitts with less than a minute to go for a win for the Warriors. The Crusaders added on to their lead with a late 1st half touchdown from Ernst to sophomore RJ Khayo to increase the lead to, The Crusaders stopped the Comets on their opening drive of the 2nd half and ensued to tack on 3 more points on a 17 play, 78 yard drive that took nearly 7 minutes of the clock to extend the lead to The Comets then began their comeback on the following drive with two long passes down the field to Austin Croy and Moeller transfer, Cameron Buford to put the Comets in the red zone. The Comets got on the board late in the 3rd quarter on a 13 yard pass from Preston Hutchinson to Buford to close the gap to The Comets kept the pressure on the Crusaders forcing a 3 and out on Archbishop Moeller s next possession. The Comets ensued by marching down the field and Hutchinson connected with Buford on a 3 yard strike to slim the margin to 3 at The Crusaders defense came up big late in the game with the Comets looking for a drive to give them a potential tying field goal or game winning touchdown, when senior The-Moor Kelly picked off Hutchinson with just over a minute to go to seal the win. 10 CRUSADERS FOOTBALL

The Crusaders jumped out to a quick start in the 1st quarter when junior running back, Colin Thurman found a hole and scampered 65 yards for the Crusaders opening score and to take a 6-0 lead. The Crusaders added on to their lead when senior quarterback, Evan Ernst found sophomore RJ Khayo for a 70 yard strike to extend the Crusaders lead to A miscue by Don Bosco with a snap over Kevin Brennan s head lead to great field position for the Crusaders and Ernst found seniior Hunter Hughes for a 7 yard strike to extend the lead to The Crusaders defense came up huge in the first half sacking Don Bosco s starting quarterback, Tommy DeVito, a Syracuse commit, multiple times.. The Ironmen cut the Crusaders lead with 2 long second half drives to with just under 5:30 to go in the game with a strike from DeVito to Marc Earlington. The Crusaders faced the challenge of generating a few first downs to run out the remaining time in the game, a challenege they met. Evan Ernst sealed the game when he converted at 3rd and 5 at the Bosco 38 yardline that allowed the Crusaders to enter into victory formation. The Crusaders started not as they planned by turned the ball over three times in the 1st quarter which led to 7 points by the Bombers. The Crusaders defense remained strong throughout Archbishop Moeller (3-2) 10 only allowing 14 total points off the three first Cincinnati St. Xavier (3-2) 14 half turnovers. The Bombers scored first on a 14 yard pass from senior Sean Clifford to wide out Score by Quarters 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final Andrew Wittrock with just under 2 minutes to go Archbishop Moeller in the opening stanza. The Bombers added on to Cincinnati St. Xavier their lead with just 28 seconds before half when Chase Wolf hit Wittrock for a 16 yard score to extend the lead to 14-0 at half. The Bombers scored first in the second half on a 1 yard run from Clifford to take a 21-0 lead with 6:17 left in the third quarter. The Crusaders responded in a big way when sophomore RJ Khayo took the ensuing kickoff a school record 98 yards for a touchdown to close the gap to 21-7, 13 seconds later. The Crusaders closed the gap again with 3:24 left in the game when Evan Ernst took the ball across the goal line on a 1 yard run to pull the Crusaders within 7 at The Crusaders force a 3 and out by the Bombers and the Crusaders had one shot to send the game into overtime. The Crusaders marched down to the Bombers 39 before Jacob Buerkle intercepted Ernst to end the game. The Lancers stopped the Crusaders on their opening possession and ensued to score on their second play from scrimmage. Senior Griffin Merritt hit Ben Brabender for a 81 yard strike that put the Lancers up, 7-0 less than 3 minutes into the game. The Lancers next possession was more of the same as Merritt hit Josh Whyle for a board when sophomore quarterback, Miles McBride found Michael Filipowski for a 7 yard touchdown reception that trimmed the Lancer lead to 14-7 with 2:35 left in the first quarter. The Crusaders had an opportunity to knot the score at 14 when Merritt fumbled on the next possession and the Crusaders recovered. However on the ensuing play McBride was hit and fumbled and the Lancers recovered and turned the turnover into 7 more points on a 10 yard pass from Merritt to Christian Turner to extend the lead to The Lancers took control and outscored the Crusaders 28-0 in the second quarter to take a 42-7 lead into the break. The Crusaders other score came with 8:49 left when Evan Ernst dove across the goal line on a QB sneak to close out the scoring in a Lancer win. The Crusaders got off to a quick start in the game on a 16 play, 70 yard drive that spanned 5:48 and ended with a 10-yard run from junior, Colin Thurman to put the Crusaders up 7-0. The Panthers responded with a 4 play, 75 yard drive that ended on a 32 yard touchdown pass from Danny Nieman to Kyle Trischler to knot the score up at 7. The Crusaders and the Panthers would trade scores again, as Evan Ernst connected with Matt Dotson for a 32 yard touchdown and Danny Nieman would connect with Adam Schwallie for a 13 yard touchdown. The Panthers scored late in the second quarter on a 20 yard pass from Nieman to Danny Falliace to give the Panthers a lead going into halftime. Elder added on to their lead on the first possession of the second half when Sam Harmeyer drilled at 23 yard field goal to extend the lead to The Crusaders would response in a fury to open the 4th quarter, as Evan Ernst hit Hunter Hughes for a 4 yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to The Crusaders would get the ball back on the Panthers next play from scrimmage when The-Moor Kelly picked off Nieman to setup at 24 yard run from RJ Khayo to give the Crusaders the lead at with 9:09 to play. However, the Panthers would methodically move the ball down the field and took the lead back with 3:22 left when Nieman hit Falliace again for a 7 yard touchdown pass to give the Panthers the lead, but Sam Harmeyer missed the extra point leaving the Crusaders down only two at The Crusaders moved the ball down the field to the Elder 30 before Evan Ernst was forced out of the pocket and picked off on 4th and 5 to seal the win for the Panthers. 14 CRUSADERS FOOTBALL
