The Black Knights, who produced five placewinners for the second straight season, accumulated 61 total points. Simpson, the No. 2 seed at 149 pounds, used a 5-0 decision over third-seeded John Cox of Navy to reach the championship final for the third straight year. In the title bout, Simpson, the third-ranked wrestler in the national polls upended top-seeded and second-ranked Dustin Manotti of Cornell, 8-7, in a thrilling match between two of the top three wrestlers in the country at 149 pounds. Simpson, who upped his team-best record to 25-1 on the season, extended his Academy-record career wins total to 130. He won the 141-pound title as a sophomore and claimed the 157-pound crown as a junior. The Nashville, Tenn., product sports an impressive 6-1 mark versus ranked opponents this year. The four-year performer will be Army s lone entrant at this year s NCAA Championships. simpson notables Senior Phillip Simpson is Army s all-time leader in victories (130). Simpson is looking to become the first Army wrestler to earn three NCAA All-America certificates in a career. Simpson is vying to become Army s first NCAA National Champion since Mike Natvig won back-to-back championships at 147 pounds in 1962 and Simpson won his third straight EIWA individual title last weekend to become just the fourth grappler in the 101-year history of the EIWA Championships to win a title at three different weight classes. Simpson leads Army with a 25-1 record and also paces the club with 11 wins by fall. Simpson has already won three tournament titles this season. He became the first wrestler to ever win four straight crowns at the New York State Championships in January. He won the 149-pound title at the All-Academy Championships in February, and he captured the EIWA title earlier this month. 1

2 2 The Chuck Barbee File In the midst of his fifth season as head coach, Chuck Barbee has helped push Army s wrestling program back into the national spotlight. Barbee, who began his tenure at West Point in 2000, was brought in to restore the prominence of the wrestling team by developing All-American talent. Barbee got off to a strong start in his first season by guiding Maurice Worthy to an EIWA championship and an appearance at the NCAA Tournament in St. Louis, Mo. Worthy s successful season ended after finishing as the national runner-up at 174 pounds, becoming the Black Knights first All-America wrestler in 14 years. In , Barbee s resume of success stories was lengthened by the addition of Phillip Simpson. Despite being a highly touted rookie, Simpson could never have been expected to produce the amazing season that he did. Under the tutelage of Barbee, Simpson qualified for the NCAA Tournament after completing his plebe year with 37 wins (20 by pinfall). Simpson would finish just one win short of All- America recognition. Boosted by the performances of Simpson, Jeremy Conner and John Paxton, the wrestling team enjoyed one of its best seasons, finishing with an 8-8 dualmatch record. Never one to reject a challenge, Barbee loaded the season with a number of nationally-recognized opponents such as Penn State, North Carolina, Hofstra and Lehigh. The Black Knights stayed competitive throughout the season and even pulled an upset over the No. 19 Wisconsin Badgers, The following year, Simpson returned to the NCAA Tournament, improving enough to take third in the 141-pound weight class. His third-place showing locked up his first All-America nod. The sophomore was joined by teammates Bernard Gardner and John Paxton in Kansas City. Barbee has led five different Black Knight wrestlers to four NCAA Tournament appearances during his four-year tenure at the helm. In , Simpson became Army s first two-time All-American since Bob Robbins, capturing the honors at the 157-pound weight class. Sophomore Luke Calvert also qualified for the NCAA Championships. The team finished 7-7 in dual matches. Barbee continues to schedule some of the best teams in the country. This season, Army is slated to face Oklahoma, Michigan and Hofstra, along with the challenging EIWA schedule, which includes Lehigh. Before arriving at West Point, Barbee coached seven All-Americans and four national finalists during his tenure at the University of Oklahoma, helping the Sooners build one of the country s top wrestling programs. The Sooners placed 10th, sixth and fourth at the NCAA Championships during Barbee s stay on the coaching staff. Barbee s Coaching Record Year Team W L Pct Army Army Army Army Army Totals All-time wins leader All-American Simpson Senior Phillip Simpson, who enters the NCAA Championships ranked third nationally at 149 pounds, is trying to become the first Army grappler to earn three NCAA All-America certificates in a career. The Nashville, Tenn., native earned his first citation at 141 pounds as a sophomore and picked up his second honor at 157 pounds last season. Phillip Simpson has been chasing several Academy records this season. At the EIWA Championships, Simpson surpassed one of them when he took over sole possession of first place on Army s all-time wins list (130), passing Brad Fenske s school standard. Simpson s 53 career pins rank second all-time. He is just five pins shy of matching Dave Warnick s Academy standard. Army at the eiwa championships Army finished seventh at the EIWA Championships March 4-5. The Black Knights produced five placewinners for the second consecutive year and racked up 61 total points. Phillip Simpson won his third straight conference crown, taking the 149-pound title. to become just the fourth wrestler to ever win three individual titles at three different weight classes in the 101-year history of the EIWA Championships. 125 Robbie Preston, So.
