3 The Coach John Brady arrived at in March of 1997 knowing he had a big job in front of him. But he knew that it had been done before at and he was confident he was the man to make it happen again. The basketball program had seen All-Americans come to play, won championships and been to the pinnacle of college basketball, the NCAA Final Four. As he enters his 11th season as the head basketball coach at, more All-Americans have played for, more conference championships have been won and has again reached the NCAA Final Four.

4 P HEAD COACH John Brady The Brady File Year at : 11th season ( record) Birth Date: Sept. 17, 1954 Age: 53 Hometown: McComb, Miss. Wife: Misty Children: Brittany (17), Brooke (13) High School: McComb High School, McComb, Miss. College: BS, Belhaven College, 1976; M. Ed., Mississippi State University, 1977 Coach Brady's tenure has been a plan with a purpose that has been accomplished. When Coach Brady first put a team on the floor of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center as the head coach of the Tigers, he knew his squad was undermanned, undersized and underdogs. But teams hated to play the Tigers then because Brady coached his team hard and his team responded with several strong performances against the league s top teams. But the little things would stop the team from getting many wins. Now as Brady begins his second decade as the head coach of the Tigers, teams still don't enjoy playing the Tigers because is now an established winning program that every year can contend for divisional and conference honors in the Southeastern Conference and into postseason play as well. Brady's 11th year as head coach is something only two other men's basketball coaches at the school have achieved in the first 100 years of officially sanctioned college basketball. In fact, Brady is just the 25th coach in the history of the league to have coached into an 11th season at one school. He's done it as only Brady knows how -- with heart and passion to go with knowledge of the game that makes him one of the best at in-game decisions. Brady has built the program to national respect with a plan that he will use to continue 's success in the years to come. In his first 10 years, Brady has won two Southeastern Conference championships (2000, 2006), three SEC Western Division titles (2000, 2005, 2006) and has taken his team to the NCAA Final Four (2006). Along the way, has had seven winning seasons (including six straight) and six postseason appearances. 's six consecutive winning seasons marks the fourth longest streak of consecutive years with a positive overall record in the program's long history. In the last eight seasons, Brady and the Tigers have won 158 games, an average of 19.7 a year. Brady's 184 wins in 10 seasons are the third most wins by an basketball coach and he opens the season in the top 25 on the all-time wins list for coaches in the Southeastern Conference. In 2000, the Tigers advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 as part of a 28-win season, the second most wins in school history. In 2005, captured the Western Division title and came back the next year for a special season Tiger fans will always remember. won 14-of-16 conference games in 2006 to capture the school's first outright league title in 21 years. The Tigers would have success in the NCAA Tournament, defeating No. 1 Duke and No. 9 Texas to win the regional title and advance to the first NCAA Final Four appearance in 20 years. A major part of the success of the program has been player development. In the last eight seasons, John Brady has coached the SEC Player of the Year three times (Stromile Swift in 2000, Brandon Bass in 2005 and Glen Davis in 2006) L S U B A S K E T B A L L M E D I A G U I D E

5 Brady now has athletes. There is no question about that. But they are also very well coached... Basketball athletes tend to be extraordinary on the offensive end with the occasional highlight play on defense. Consistent defenses like 's are the product of coaching. -GLENN GUILBEAU, GANNETT LOUISIANA P Playing Experience McComb High School McComb, Miss. In that same time span, the Tigers have had the SEC Freshman of the Year on their roster four times (Torris Bright in 2000, Brandon Bass in 2004, Glen Davis in 2005, Tyrus Thomas in 2006). John Brady has built a program at with a record of success that is hard to argue with. He has given the program the direction to grow and the chance to shine again. He has shown the ability to build a program based on responsibility and accountability. When Brady took over the program there were dreams of building a program where the players would take responsibility for their actions and make people proud of what they were trying to accomplish, both on and off the floor. Some players even 10 years later have shown that taking that responsibility has been posts a 12-4 record in winning the SEC Western Division Tigers go 8-0 in league play at home, the first undefeated conference home record since 1981 Team advanced to the NCAA Tournament, the fourth straight post season berth and fifth in the last six years posts a 14-2 record in winning the SEC title, the school s first title since 2000 and the first outright title in 21 years... 6 P a difficult thing for them to accept. Brady has in each case given the players enough latitude to make the choice, right or wrong, to fight through it or leave the program. Those that have stayed the course have shown what time in the Brady system is worth. For every player that has transferred or left the program there are examples of Brady's players who have shown improvement from the day they stepped on the campus until the time they left, either to go on to play professional basketball or to walk down the aisle with an degree. That means Brady's plan isn't just taking place on a hardwood floor in the Maravich Center. He has worked hard to show the public that athletic and academic pursuits of the players should be challenged to the fullest. That's part of the reason that basketball is not only a success on the court, but in the classroom as well. Hours are passed and posted toward graduation on a regular basis by scholarship players. Brandon Bass in 2005 was not only named the SEC Player of the Year, but also the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A total of 18 players under John Brady have graduated from and more are on pace to wear the cap and gown as well. Brady may not have realized at the time that the journey would stutter a couple of times while the right combination of ideas meshed together. He does know that after 10 years, his knowledge of the game and his belief in discipline and responsibility for actions on and off the floor have made the program strong again, one that fans are proud of because they feel a part of the program. They've shown that by raising the average paid attendance number for Tiger basketball each of the last six years. Brady has shown his passion for basketball, an interest in building a quality program and a quality student-athlete. In simple, honest terms, John Brady is a basketball coach who wants his players to succeed both in and out of the arena L S U B A S K E T B A L L M E D I A G U I D E

7 There's never been a doubt in basketball coach John Brady's mind that his teams play quality defense. Now the rest of the college basketball world knows. -Jim Kleinpeter, New Orleans Times Picayune Prior to Brady came to after six successful seasons at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., one of several programs he has helped build to new heights in his career. But his love of basketball and his success in the sport was molded form a journey that had roots in Mississippi. The McComb, Miss., native played his college ball at Belhaven College in Jackson, Miss., from , twice earning All-Southern States Conference honors as a guard. Brady was a three-year starter at Belhaven and scored over 1,000 points. He would later be inducted into his alma mater's Hall of Fame. Charlie Rugg coached Brady at Belhaven and Brady would bring Coach Rugg and his wife to the NCAA Final Four as his guests to be a part of the Final Four experience. The event became even more special as Coach Brady and CBS sportscaster Jim Nantz recognized him at the NCAA Salute event in Indianapolis. Brady began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Mississippi Sate while earning his Masters in education. From there, Brady moved to the prep ranks, making the first stop of his career in Louisiana. This stop was as the head coach at Crowley High School from There he compiled a record of (.752). During the 1981 campaign, Brady came to the Assembly Center for the first time as a head coach as Crowley advanced all the way to the Class AAA finals in the Top 28 Tournament. Brady was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Coach of the Year for the classification that season. In all, three of his Crowley teams advanced at least to the quarterfinals in the playoffs. He returned to college coaching at Mississippi State for the season, serving eight years. In his last four years he served as chief recruiter and certainly honed his ability to find top-notch talent that eventually led the Bulldogs from last place in the SEC to the cochampionship with in 1991, one year after Brady's departure. Following his tenure in Starkville, Brady returned to Louisiana for the second time, this time to serve on the staff of Tim Floyd at the University of New Orleans. Again, Brady was part of an NCAA Tournament team with the Privateers. It came time for John Brady to take the next big step to a Division I college head coaching position. The Bulldogs won two TAAC Western Division Championships, sharing the crown in 1996 and winning it outright in 1997, the first basketball championship of any kind at the time of Samford. In Brady's six years at Samford, the team had three first-team and five second-team All-TAAC selections. In his time at the Birmingham school, he had 14 members named to the All-TAAC Academic team. Now, through his first 10 years at, the numbers are continuing to work for Brady both on and off the floor, with 16 players earning All-SEC honors and 33 earning All-SEC academic honors. The 53-year-old Brady is the father of two daughters, Brittany, 17, and Brooke, 13, and is married to the former Misty Champagne. In 10 seasons, John Brady has taken a long way both on and off the court, earning basketball championships, taking his team to the pinnacle of college basketball and overseeing his student-athletes ever-improving efforts in the classroom. The Tiger program is sound both athletically and academically. The top players in the country are seriously putting at the top of their lists and Brady is earning the respect of his peers throughout the nation.
