Sports Information Director OFFICE: (217) HOME: (217) Sept. 17, 1985 LS-AS-FB State -FB Opp FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CHARLESTON, IL--Eastern Illinois University's football Panthers go for two in a row when they host two-time NAIA playoff participant Saginaw Valley Saturday (Sept. 21). Kickoff is 1:30 at EIU's O'Brien Stadium. The Panthers are 1-1 after defeating Indiana State, 39-7, last week while Saginaw Valley is 0-2. "We played extremely well, particularly on defense, last Saturday in the ISU win so we need to keep the momentum going as we close in on the conference portion of the schedule," said Coach Al Molde. "We don't want to have a setback this Saturday. We saw what can happen when we're not mentally ready to play (Northeast Missouri opening loss), and we don't want to repeat that." This is the first meeting between these two universities who have no common opponents. Last year EIU played two members of the Great Lakes Conference, of which Saginaw Valley is a member, and defeated Grand Valley, 35-9, and Ferris State, * * * * * * GAME NOTES * * * * * * THE GAME: Eastern Illinois University (1-1) hosts Saginaw Valley State (0-2) 1:30, Saturday, Sept. 21, O'Brien Stadium, Charleston. RADIO: COACHES: Hear all the action on 50,000 watt WLBH-FM, 97 on the dial with Ken Wooddell calling play-by-play and Doug Bock providing the commentary.. the pre-game show begins at 1:15. EIU's Al Molde, in his third season, is 16-9 here, (63.2%) overall in 15 years.. he has had 11 winning seasons and four NCAA playoff teams coaching at Sioux Falls College, Minn-Morris and Central Missouri. George Ihler, also in his third season, is he previously was head coach at Saginaw Hills HS from with an record. SERIES: This is the first meeting between these two teams, and the first I-AA opponent for Saginaw Valley. SAGINAW KNOWN IN MICHIGAN: The Cardinals are based just outside Saginaw, Michigan with an enrollment just under SVS has won the last two Great Lakes Conference titles with 9-3 and 8-3 records, respectively, and reached the NAIA playoff semifinals each season. the Cardinals were selected in the preseason poll to win the conference for the third consecutive year. -more-

3 ADD 1 SAGINAW FACTS: For the first time under coach George Ihler the Cardinals have lost two consecutive games, to Indiana Central and to Franklin, both at home using an option attack, SVS relies on QB Mike Leibinger, a three year letterman, who ran for 124 yards in last week's loss at Franklin.. Second Team NAIA All-American Byron Krukowski has rushed for over 100 yards and lea~all pass receivers with eight catches for 124 yards... linebackers Darrell Bartkowiak and Mark O'Hagen are back for their fourth and third years, respectively, to lead the defense. PANTHER GROUND GAME: While EIU's rushing offense will not yet resemble the Green Bay Packers attack of the '60s, nonetheless the Panthers are churning up ground at three times the '84 pace EIU is averaging 134 yards p/game compared to just 47 last season... DuWayne Pitts (Detroit, MacKenzie) has a average and redshirt freshman James Marable (Chicago-Schurz) gave notice that he's ready to play by getting 90 yards, all in the fourth quarter, Saturday against ISU. PUNTING PICKS UP: Senior Evan Arapostathis (LaMesa, CA-Helix/Grossmount CC), who is both the kicker and punter, is booming punts at a 41.6 p/game average, an increase of nearly eight yards over last year's 34.0 figure... he's still considerably shy of the school record 43.0 set by Jeff Gossett (1977), currently punting for the Cleveland Browns. CHARTING PAYTON & BANKS: QB Sean Payton (Naperville-Central) could become No. 3 on the career pass completion list Saturday... he has 325 trailing Roger Haberer's 354 ( )... he needs 30 on the nose, and four times has topped that figure in a game. WR Roy Banks (Detroit-King) has 20 career TD pass receptions and with the next one will move into third place on the all-time list ahead of Willie White ( ) and Jerry Wright ( ). James Warring ( ) is just ahead also at 22. 4 MOLDE SAYS: "I was especially pleased with our defensive effort last week.. we played hard, aggressive football and created the turnovers... that's the type of play we need each week where we are mentally ready... Saginaw's option attack will be a challenge as I'm sure they will mix it up a bit to throw us off... I expect them to come in here very motivated since Eastern is the first NCAA I-AA club they've played it would be a real feather in their cap to knock us off.. they have good size in the lines so we're going to have to be prepared right from the start.. it was a big lift for us last week to have James Marable (redshirt freshman running back) perform as he did.. given the chance, he made the most of it and ran extremely hard. with Bernie Holland out, we're in need of someone to spell DuWayne Pitts or allow us to go to a twin set, and Marable gave an indication that he can fill that role."
