2 Head Coach Lon Kruger Lon Kruger was named Oklahoma s 14th head men s basketball coach on April 1, Owns a (.608) collegiate record over 27 years and is at Oklahoma (.556) through two seasons. The only Division I head coach to ever take five different programs to the NCAA Tournament. Has also coached at Texas-Pan American (52-59 record from ), Kansas State (81-46 from ), Florida ( from ), Illinois (81-48 from ) and UNLV ( from ). Served as head coach of NBA s Atlanta Hawks from ( record) and was an assistant for New York Knicks ( season). Averaged 25.4 wins at UNLV over last five years there (four NCAA appearances and one NIT trip) and won at least 21 games each of those five seasons. Has taken teams to 14 NCAA Tournaments (14-14 record) and four NITs (4-5 record). Coached Florida to the 1994 Final Four, Kansas State to the 1988 Elite Eight and UNLV to the 2007 Sweet 16. OU, which finished last season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four years, is starting its third season under head coach Lon Kruger. The Ichabods, coached by Kruger s former Kansas State teammate Bob Chipman, went 19-8 last season but did not participate in postseason play. Saturday s contest will air on the Sooner Radio Network (KRXO FM The Franchise in Oklahoma City; KTBZ 1430 AM in Tulsa) with Toby Rowland and Mike Houck announcing. The game will be televised by Sooner Sports TV (FS Southwest Plus and FOX College Sports Pacific) with Bob Carpenter and Billy Tubbs calling the action. TOP FIVE STORYLINES Oklahoma and Washburn will meet in exhibition play for a third consecutive season. OU beat the Ichabods last year and the season before. The Sooners also won regular season games over Washburn in (55-20), (30-27) and (79-55). OU head coach Lon Kruger and Washburn head coach Bob Chipman were Kansas State teammates in the 1970s. The pair helped the Wildcats to back-toback Big Eight regular season titles in 1972 and Kruger was the Big Eight Player of the Year in 1973 and The Sooners return 32 percent of their scoring, 38 percent of their rebounding and 44 percent of their assists from last season s squad that advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four years. Sophomore guard Buddy Hield is OU s leading returner in points (7.8 ppg), rebounds (4.2 rpg), assists (1.9 apg) and steals (1.2 spg). Senior forward Cameron Clark led OU in scoring in four of its five August exhibition games in Belgium and France and paced the team with his 16.8 points per contest. Clark, who is the Sooners most experienced player (60 starts in 95 career games), shot.521 from the field in Europe and also averaged 7.0 boards an outing. Oklahoma has won 18 consecutive preseason exhibition games and 47 of 49 over the last 25 seasons. RETURNING PLAYERS The Sooners return just five scholarship players from last season in senior forwards Cameron Clark and Tyler Neal and sophomore guards Isaiah Cousins, Buddy Hield and Je lon Hornbeak. OU s most experienced player, Clark is averaging 8.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per game over his career. He moved from the wing to the power forward spot just before the midway point of last year and shot.600 from the field over the season s final 13 games. Cousins (14), Hield (13) and Hornbeak (29) combined to make 56 starts as freshmen a year ago. Also back is walk-on guard James Fraschilla. The junior played in five games last season and missed the last 11 contests of the year due to a back injury. NEW FACES Nine of OU s 15 players have never suited up for the Sooners. Six of those nine players are on scholarship. They are junior forward D.J. Bennett, junior center Keshaun Hamilton (both junior college transfers), sophomore forward Ryan Spangler (Gonzaga transfer), freshman forward C.J. Cole and freshman guards Frank Booker and Jordan Woodard. All but Hamilton played during the Sooners exhibition trip to Europe in August. Also joining the squad this season is a trio of walk-ons in forward Austin Mankin and guards Daniel Harper and Trey Slate. All three are freshmen in terms of eligibility (Mankin and Slate are sophomores academically). Slate was a manager for the Sooners last year. SOONERS GET JUMP ON SEASON WITH EXHIBITION TRIP TO EUROPE Oklahoma made an 11-day trip to Belgium and France in August, playing five exhibition games against teams from various pro and semi-pro leagues. It marked OU s first foreign exhibition tour in six years. Playing FIBA rules (four quarters, a 24-second clock and a longer 3-point line of 22 feet, 1.7 inches are three of the major differences), the Sooners won their first four games by an average of 26.0 points before sustaining an defeat in their finale (they led by five with 6:10 remaining). Oklahoma averaged 90.6 points during its five-game exhibition trip, 20.0 more than it averaged during the season. Five Sooners averaged between 11.0 and 16.8 points a game, and two more averaged at least 7.6. Seven of the team s 10 players on the trip reached double figures at least once, and four players tallied at least 20 points (Cameron Clark twice, D.J. Bennett, Isaiah Cousins and Jordan Woodard). Clark led OU in scoring in four of the five games and his trip average of 16.8 points per contest paced the team. Also averaging double figures in scoring were Cousins (13.2 ppg), Ryan Spangler (12.4), Je lon Hornbeak (12.2) and Bennett (11.0). Cousins, who played point guard a large chunk of last season, moved to a wing position in Europe and flourished. His 25 field goals in the five exhibition games were just six fewer than he made in 32 contests as a freshman. OU s five scholarship newcomers on the trip played a big role. Spangler, Bennett, Woodard (9.4 ppg), Frank Booker (4.6 ppg) and C.J. Cole (3.8 ppg) accounted for 45 percent of the team s scoring and combined to shoot.519 from the field. The quintet also accounted for all 21 of OU s blocked shots (15 combined by Bennett and Spangler). Sophomore guard Buddy Hield made the trip but was held out of competition due to injury precaution reasons (sore foot). PREVIEWING WASHBURN Located in Topeka, Kan., NCAA Division II member Washburn University is a school of 7,002 students that competes in the Mid- America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. Washburn finished 19-8 overall last year and placed third in the MIAA with a 12-6 league record. It did not qualify for postseason competition. The Ichabods, who lost five seniors from last year, return just 23 percent of their scoring and 22 percent of their rebounding from a season ago. Junior guard Kyle Wiggins is the team s lone returning starter. The 6-2, 170-pounder averaged 8.0 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 27.1 minutes a contest as a sophomore. Junior forward Alex North started four of five games to begin the year before missing the rest of the season due to injury. North averaged 6.8 points and 6.2 rebounds in his five outings. Saturday s game will mark the only exhibition contest this season for Washburn. It opens the regular season Nov. 8 vs. Rollins in the Las Vegas Tip-Off Classic. The Ichabods are under the direction of longtime head coach Bob Chipman, who was a college teammate of OU head coach Lon Kruger at Kansas State in the early 1970s (the pair helped the Wildcats to back-to-back Big Eight regular season titles in and ). Chipman is in his 35th season at Washburn, where he owns a (.709) record. He has racked up 12 regular season conference championships and won the 1987 NAIA national title. OU-WASHBURN HISTORY Saturday s game will mark the sixth between Oklahoma and Washburn, and the third as an exhibition. The Sooners won regular season meetings over the Ichabods in (55-20 in Norman under head coach Bennie Owen), (30-27 in Topeka under head coach Hugh McDermott) and (79-55 in Norman under head coach John MacLeod). Last year, OU posted an home exhibition win over Washburn (box score on page 7 of these notes) behind a team-high 16 points from Buddy Hield. The then-freshman added five rebounds and three steals in 24 minutes. Will McNeill led Washburn with 19 points. Two years ago, the Sooners notched an exhibition win over the Ichabods at Lloyd Noble Center. Saturday s contest will mark the 10th time for OU head coach Lon Kruger to face a Bob Chipman-coached Washburn team. Kruger beat Washburn once while the head coach at Pan American and six times while the head coach at UNLV (five exhibitions and one regular season game). EXHIBITING SUCCESS Oklahoma has compiled a 47-2 exhibition record over the last 25 years. Last season, the Sooners beat Washburn (83-66) and Central Oklahoma (94-66) in Norman.
