Savage posted four passes defended, including an interception, in Dayton s non-conference victory against Robert Morris, Saturday. He also led the Flyers with nine tackles (five solo). Savage s interception came after a Dayton fumble set up Robert Morris offense in Dayton territory and stopped the resulting drive at the 15-yard line. 3 2012 PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE WEEKLY REPORT RAISE THE CURTAIN The 20th edition of the PFL regular-season race begins this weekend when Davidson and Marist meet at Tenney Stadium. Six teams have claimed a share of the PFL crown with Dayton winning a share of 11 titles, including six solo championships. OPENER STREAKS Here s a quick look at each team s current streak in PFL openers, records are since the return to single division play in 2006: Butler: 2-4, L2 Campbell: 0-4, L4 Davidson: 4-2, L1 Dayton: 4-2, W4 Drake: 5-1, W3 Jacksonville: 5-1, W4 Marist: 0-3, L3 Morehead State: 2-4, L3 San Diego: 6-0, W7* Valparaiso: 1-5, L5 * San Diego s last PFL-opening loss came in 2004 during divisional play. 400 AND COUNTING Dayton extended its own NCAA record by scoring in its 400th consecutive game when running back Taylor Harris rushed two yards for a first-quarter touchdown in a Week 3 victory against Robert Morris. The Flyers have not been held scoreless since suffering a 9-0 loss to Marshall during the 1976 season that s right the 1976 season. For perspective, that year was the United States Bicentennial, Apple Computer Company and the band U2 were formed, the Ford Fiesta debuted and Jimmy Carter was elected President. PAPER OR PLASTIC? Drake leads the FCS with an impressive 13 sacks in its first three games and its 4.33 sacks per game average ranks only behind a pair of Ivy League schools that opened their season in Week 3. The Bulldogs have become regulars atop the FCS national rankings in team sacks, ranking among the top five in each of the last three seasons 5th in 2011, 8th in 2010 and 5th in 2009 all under the guidance of current head coach Chris Creighton. WHERE HAVE THE RUNNERS GONE? The first two weeks have not been kind to the league s runners with the league averaging 93.6 yards per game. Butler running back Trae Heeter leads the PFL s rushers with 65.3 yards per game and is ranked 83rd nationally. The PFL set its all-time rushing low last season, averaging just yards per game. PFL = PASSING FOOTBALL LEAGUE? While the running game has suffered, the PFL s passers have enjoyed near record-breaking seasons. The league s quarterbacks are averaging an FCS best yards per game, just below last season s record yards per game. Drake s Mike Piatkowski ( ypg) and Morehead State s Zach Lewis ( ypg) are ranked seventh and eighth respectively among all the league s quarterbacks in passing yards per game. They are among six PFL signal callers ranked among the top 25 nationally. WEEK 2 NATIONAL HONORS San Diego s Ernie Collins and Jacksonville s Jordan Dewhirst and Terrance Bryant were recognized by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) for their Week 2 performances. Collins was named the National Placekicker of the Week after converting field goals of 37 and 51 yards and was 4-of-4 on PATs against Western New Mexico. Dewhirst was the National Kickoff Returner of the Week after a 44-yard onside kick return for a touchdown against Charleston Southern. Bryant was the National Punt Returner of the Week following his 55-yard punt return touchdown against Charleston Southern. In addition, three PFL student-athletes received honorable mention recognition from the CFPA. TURNING ON THE LIGHTS Two Pioneer Football League teams experienced playing under the lights for the first time on their home turf in the season s first two weeks. Butler added new lights to the Butler Bowl in 2011, but played under those lights for the first time in its Week 2 victory against Franklin. It was Butler s first home night game since Campbell added lights to Barker-Lane Stadium during the summer and got the chance to use those lights in an opening week loss to Shorter. WEEK 1 NATIONAL HONORS Dayton s Gary Hunter and Morehead State s Rainer Duzan were recognized by the College Football Performance Awards for their Week 1 performances. Hunter was named the National Punt Returner of the Week after his FCS best 77-yard punt return for a touchdown against nationally-ranked Illinois State. Duzan was picked the National Placekicker of the Week after recording 13 points in the Eagles win against Southern Virginia. In addition, eight PFL student-athletes received honorable mention recognition from the CFPA. 4 2012 PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE WEEKLY REPORT STREAK-LESS After ending the 2011 campaign with three teams boasting multi-game win streaks Drake (4), San Diego (3) and Davidson (2) the Pioneer Football League enters Week 4 of the 2012 season with only Jacksonville owning a multi-game win streak, taking a two-game win streak into its PFL opener at Dayton. HOME SWEET HOME, EAST COAST The FCS top home winning streak resides at the D.B. Milne Field, home of the Jacksonville Dolphins. Jacksonville successfully extended the FCS longest home win streak (15 games) with a Week 3 win against Webber International. The Dolphins win streak stretch dates back to the 2009 season when they defeated Davidson, October 3, to begin the streak. Jacksonville s streak is the fourth longest in Division I circles behind LSU (20), Wisconsin (18) and Northern Illinois (16). However, it falls to ninth when all divisions are included with five Division III teams owning win streaks longer than 15 games. HOME SWEET HOME, WEST COAST San Diego extended its home win streak to eight games (5th best in the FCS) with a Week 2 win against Western New Mexico. The Toreros put their streak on the line in Week 4 when they host Valparaiso in their PFL opener. TWO PFL ATHLETES NOMINATED FOR 2011 ALLSTATE AFCA GOOD WORKS TEAM Campbell s Braden Smith and Drake s Zach Bosch were among 117 nominees for the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, which recognizes the selfless contributions to volunteerism and community service made by college football student-athletes across the nation. Of the two 11-member teams, one includes players competing in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (I- A) and the other is a combined team representing the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (I-AA), Divisions II, III, and the NAIA. BUCHANAN WATCH LIST INCLUDES SAN DIEGO S OLIARO San Diego junior defensive end Blake Oliaro, the returning PFL Defensive Player of the Year, has been named to the 2012 Buck Buchanan Award Watch list, presented by The Sports Network. Oliaro finished the season ranked fourth among FCS athletes with 1.36 sacks per game (15 sacks in 11 games) and was ranked 10th nationally with 1.77 tackles for loss per game (19.5 total). The Buchanan Award annual recognized the FCS Defensive Player of the Year and is presented the night prior to the Division I Football Championship. PFL RECEIVES FCS CHAMPION- SHIP AUTOMATIC BID IN 2013 PFL WILL BECOME ONE OF 11 AUTOMATIC QUALIFIERS Beginning in 2013, the Pioneer Football League will gain access to the Division I Football Championship through an automatic bid as a result of the NCAA Board of Directors approving a budget that will allow expansion of the tournament to 24 teams that season. The championship s 2013 expansion will be the second this decade. The bracket grew from 16 to 20 teams in 2010, its first expansion since The PFL will join 10 conferences currently awarded an automatic bid. They will be placed into the 24-team bracket by the NCAA Football Championship selection committee along with 13 at-large qualifiers. The committee will select its eight national seeds which will receive first-round byes. The remaining 16 teams will then be placed in the bracket with an emphasis on geographical proximity. Having the Pioneer Football League champion automatically qualify for the FCS Playoffs is hugely important to our teams, said PFL commissioner Patty Viverito. This opportunity seemed a distant hope just one year ago, but will become a reality when the FCS bracket expands to 24 teams in The Pioneer Football League, which began with four members upon its inception in 1991, will expand to 12 members in It is the nation s only non-scholarship, football-only NCAA Football Championship Subdivision conference. The PFL is a truly national conference with members on each coast and throughout the nation s heartland. The league still retains four of its charter members Butler University, the University of Dayton, Drake University and Valparaiso University, plus the University of San Diego (joining in 1992) which were joined in 2001 by Davidson College, Jacksonville University and Morehead State University. Campbell University joined the PFL in 2008, its first season of intercollegiate football. Marist College, which joined prior to the 2009 season, further extended the league s footprint into the northeast. The league will add Mercer University and Stetson University in 2013, improving the league s representation in the southeast. 5 2012 PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE WEEKLY REPORT 2011 PFL PLAYERS OF THE YEAR RETURN All four PFL Players of the Year return for the 2012 campaign. Drake quarterback Mike Piatkowski returns after earning PFL Offensive Player of the Year honors and leading the league in pass efficiency (151.4). San Diego defensive lineman Blake Oliaro, the league s Defensive Player of the Year, led the league in sacks (15.0) last season as a sophomore. San Diego wide receiver Brandon White was the PFL s Freshman Offensive Player of the Year after posting 561 receiving yards last season. Drake linebacker Travis Merritt also returns after earning PFL Freshman Defensive Player of the Year honors following a 66-tackle campaign last season. PRESEASON ALL-PFL TEAM The Pioneer Football League s coaches preseason All-PFL team selected 29 student-athletes for 30 positions. San Diego had six selections, including junior Kenny James who earned the nod at both running back and return specialist. Drake saw five players receive preseason recognition. ALL-PFL HONOREES RETURN Nineteen members of the 2011 All-PFL squads return to their teams in 2012, including 12 firstteam selections and seven second-team honorees. San Diego and Drake, the 2011 PFL co-champions, each return four All-PFL selections from last season. All 10 PFL teams had at least one player selected to the preseason squad. SAN DIEGO PICKED TO WIN PFL San Diego and Drake, the defending Pioneer Football League co-champions, were picked to finish first and second, respectively, in the league s preseason coaches poll. San Diego (79 points) received eight of a possible nine first-place votes. Drake received 71 points and one first-place vote. Jacksonville was picked to finish third with 65 points. Dayton picked up the remaining first-place vote and 56 total points to finish fourth in the preseason poll. Campbell rounded out the poll s top half with 45 points for fifth place. Marist (6th, 42 points), Butler (7th, 34), Morehead State (8th, 27), Davidson (9th, 20) and Valparaiso (10th, 11) rounded out the PFL Preseason Poll. BIG PLAY REVIEW The list of 70-plus yard plays in the PFL this season, each resulting in a touchdown: Gary Hunter (DAY) 77-yard punt return vs. Illinois State [Sept. 1, 2012] Kitaro Lewis (MOR) 76-yard pass from Brandon Goldsmith vs. Southern Virginia [Aug. 30, 2012] Brandon Bornhauser (MOR) 94-yard pass from Zach Lewis vs. St. Francis (Pa.) [Sept. 15, 2012] EXPANSION 2013 MERCER, STETSON TO JOIN PFL IN 2013 Pioneer Football League Commissioner Patty Viverito announced in June 2011 that Mercer University and Stetson University have accepted the league s invitations for membership. Both institutions will begin play with the 2013 season, bringing the league s membership to 12 teams at that time. Mercer, located in Macon, Ga., announced the return of its football program in The Bears have not competed in football since 1941 but its history includes playing the first football game in Georgia against the University of Georgia in Mercer is the only private university in Georgia with NCAA Division I membership. Stetson, located in DeLand, Fla., will return to the football gridiron for the first time in 57 years after a 2011 decision to reinstate the program. The Hatters last competed in football during the 1956 season, however the program s roots can be traced back to the first organized football game played in Florida. With the addition of Mercer and Stetson, the Pioneer Football League expands its footprint in the Southeast where they will join current members Campbell, Davidson, Jacksonville and Morehead State. They also continue the PFL s tradition of attracting institutions beginning a football program who are committed to the principles of the league s model, which began with Jacksonville in 1998 and continued with Campbell s addition in The league, which began with four members upon its inception in 1991, will expand to 12 members in With the additional growth, the league foresees increased scheduling opportunities for its members which should further limit the impact of travel-related costs. To that end, league members recently agreed to implement an eight-game conference schedule beginning with the 2013 campaign, but have not determined the schedule s structure at this time. PAGE 5
