At 5-1, Maine is in a log-jam tie for the top spot in the CAA although the Black Bears lost last weekend to Towson. Though the Minutemen hold a all-time mark in the series, playing in Orono has been an equalizer of sorts with UMass holding just an record in the series there. Saturday s game will feature a match-up of evenly matched offensive teams as Maine is just one spot ahead of UMass in points per game and total offense in the CAA stats. Despite not having an official conference record due to the transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision, UMass is 3-2 this season against CAA foes heading into the weekend. STATEWIDE RADIO COVERAGE Josh Maurer in his fourth season as Voice of the Minutemen. He will be joined by color analyst and former Minuteman Matt Goldstein. Cody Chrusciel will man the sidelines with in game reports and walkoff interviews. Adam Frenier will host the pregame, halftime and postgame shows. The game will be carried statewide on flagship FM WRNX in Western Mass., WCRN 830 AM in Worcester, WWZN 1510 AM in Boston and 95.9 FM WATD on the South Shore. The Minutemen will host the Hoosiers at Gillette Stadium on Sept. 8 and will play road games at the Huskies, Wolverines, and Commodores in addition to their full Mid-American Conference schedule. We feel this is a tremendous non-conference schedule to secure for our first season at the FBS level. This will be a challenge to be sure, but we believe it sends a clear message about our commitment to building a competitive FBS football program. UMass Athletics Director John McCutcheon UMass will open its inaugural FBS season with an Aug. 30 game at Connecticut. That will be followed up on Sept. 8 with the Minutemen s first home game at Gillette Stadium against a FBS program when they host Indiana in Foxboro. They join James Ihedigbo (Patriots), Jeremy Cain (Jaguars), Jeromy Miles (Bengals) and Matt Lawrence (Ravens). Also from the 2009 squad, receiver Jeremy Horne is with the Kansas City Chiefs after being signed this preseason to their practice squad. Tailback John Griffin (Cincinnati), offensive lineman Greg Niland (Lions), and kicker Chris Koepplin (Patriots) were all late cuts from their respective training camps this past preseason. Former Head Coach Mark Whipple is currently the quarterbacks coach in Cleveland after a stint at the University of Miami as offensive coordinator and with Pittsburgh where he coached Ben Rothlisberger. vs. Buffalo 2 catches, 12 yards The previous high mark for UMass products in the pros vs. Miami 7 catches, 99 yards, TD came in 1968, when UMass had five players combined at New England 6 catches, 91 yards between the NFL and AFL, prior to the leagues merger in That year, tight end Milt Morin played for the Cleveland Browns, quarterback Greg Landry was a first-round draft pick of the Detroit Lions, quarterback John McCormick played for the Denver Broncos and halfback Terry Swanson and lineman Ed Toner suited up for the then- Boston Patriots. Cruz burst on the scene in the first-ever game at the New Meadowlands Stadium as he scored three touchdowns and had six catches for 145 yards for the New York Giants. Even NBA star LeBron James was wowed by Cruz, sending out a tweet about Cruz and UMass. Cruz had four of the Giants seven touchdowns this preseason. Ducasse has been battling for time between guard and tackle, but the potential starter was hurt by missing valuable training time this past summer due to the lockout. He was the Jets second round pick and 61st overall this past April. He became the highest UMass product to be drafted in 40 years, since Landry was a first-rounder in grad James Ihedigbo is in his first season with the Patriots after earning praise for his special teams/nickle package play for the New York Jets over four seasons. CLIMBING THE CHARTS Jonathan Hernandez, Tyler Holmes, Jesse Julmiste, and Julian Talley have all been spectacular this season. Each are looking to put their names in the UMass record books following the 2011 campaign. Hernandez enters the weekend with 2,489 career rushing yards which ranks 7th all-time at UMass. His 28 career touchdowns also ranks among the all-time best totals at sixth, while his 561 attempts ranks fifth. Talley ranks seventh all-time in career receiving yards with 1,926 and passed Victor Cruz and Brandon London on the all-time receptions list (150) for third. One of the top kick returners in the country, Julmiste ranks 8thth all-time at UMass with 945 career return yards having just past Jeremy Horne. He has 725 of those yards this season which is the second most in a single-season. With 322 total tackles, Holmes ranks fifth all-time in program history. He also needs one more interception to crack the top-10 list. His pick at Richmond gives him 11 for his career. Free safety Darren Thellen has been a thief in the secondary with five interceptions this season. One more puts him in the top-10 for a single-season. For his career, he has seven interceptions in 31 games. NFL Team Jeremy Cain, LS/LB ( ) Jax. Jaguars N.Y. Giants Vladimir Ducasse, OL ( ) N.Y. Jets Jeremy Horne, WR ( )* K.C. 5 HOLMES ONE OF BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYERS IN COUNTRY UMass linebacker Tyler Holmes is one of the top returning defensive players in FCS football and he has the hardware to prove it. In 2010, the senior co-captain earned multiple All-American honors, was the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Defensive Player of the Year, and was named the National Defensive Player of the Year. For the second consecutive year, Holmes is also on the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List which honors the top FCS defensive player. He was also named the 2011 CAA Preseason Defensive Player of the Year on top of multiple preseason All-American honors. In 2010, the native of Blacksburg, Va., led UMass with 110 tackles, five interceptions (including two returned for touchdowns), 12 tackles for loss, and five sacks. He enters the game with 336 career tackles and 11 interceptions. He is 5th all-time at UMass in total career tackles and needs 29 more to move into 4th place. One of his most memorable performances came against Maine on Nov. 6 last season when he became the first player in program history to return two interceptions for touchdowns in the same game. The returns were for 18 and 50 yards. Against Rhode Island this season, Holmes was tied for the team lead with nine tackles. At Boston College, he was 3rd with 10 including a TFL and a fumble recovery. At Old Dominion, he led the Minutemen with 12 tackles (6 solo). Holmes set a new career-high with 19 tackles in the win over Central Connecticut State. Holmes has double-digit tackles in six of the last seven games (80 of his 93 season tackles). He enters the weekend ranked 4th in the CAA in total tackles averaging 10.3 per game. Nationally, that average ties him for tied for 18th among all FCS defensive players. HOLMES, MCINTYRE A TOUGH ONE-TWO PUNCH UMass has one of the top pairs of inside linebackers in the country with the combination of Tyler Holmes 2011 UMASS FOOTBALL GAME 10 at #13 MAINE 5 and Perry McIntyre. The duo are each among the top-10 in the CAA in total tackles. Holmes leads UMass this season with 93, while McIntyre is just behind with 83. While Holmes ranks 4th in the league in tackles per game, McIntyre is just behind at 8th (9.2/game). TALENTED LINEBACKER CORPS LEAD THE WAY Paced by All-American Tyler Holmes, the UMass linebackers are a veteran, fast, and hard-hitting group. Chad Hunte and Perry McIntyre are both athletic and experienced starting linebackers. Added to the group this year is Courtney Jackson who transitions from defensive end to outside linebacker. D.J. Adeoba played in all 11 games last season, while McIntyre started all nine games he played and was the fifth leading tackler last season with 42 including 12 against Delaware. Added to the mix this season is senior Shane Viveiros who previously played safety. At 6-0, 226 pounds, Viveiros size at outside linebacker is similar to Holmes. In his career, he has played in 34 games with 19 starts compiling 127 total tackles (66 solo). DEFENSE GETS A NEW LOOK FOR 2011 Under new defensive coordinator Frank Forcucci, the UMass defense is sporting a 3-4 scheme instead of the usual 4-3 look. The defense will highlight the Minutemen s speed and athleticism allowing UMass to increase pressure on opposing offenses. For Forcucci, this is his second stint with UMass after serving as director of operations, defensive line coach and outside linebackers coach from Current NFLer Jeremy Cain was a product of Forcucci s. In 2000, he helped UMass post the top defense in the Atlantic 10. Last season, UMass allowed offenses to gain yards per game on offense including 184 through the air and 171 on the ground. The Minutemen picked up 11 sacks, forced seven fumbles and posted eight interceptions. SECONDARY LOOKING TO BUILD ON EXPERIENCE The leader of the defensive secondary is safety Darren Thellen who posted 53 tackles including 36 solo last season as a redshirt sophomore in Thellen has started 26 of 31 career games with a career-high 10 tackles against Villanova this year. Against Central Connecticut, he had two interceptions in a game for the first time in his career highlighted by an 85-yard touchdown return in the fourth quarter. Injuries took an early toll on UMass, however, as corner Mike Lee and safety Ed Saint-Vil were both knocked out of the game at Boston College. Saint-Vil returned to action at Delaware, while Lee continues to be sidelined. Christian Birt, Kirk Nelms, and Ryan Carter have each filled in at those positions nicely. True sophomore Antoine Tharpe also missed two games this year, but has started the other five and leads the team in pass break-ups with 6 along with 22 tackles. Birt, Lee, and Tharpe all played in 11 games last season. Lee made nine starts, while Tharpe had eight. The secondary averages 6-foot-0 in height and nearly 200 pounds with Thellen and Birt among the tallest at 6-foot-2. Nelms and Saint-Vil showed the physical nature of the group as each forced and recovered fumbles at Holy Cross on a pair of key possessions to turn momentum in UMass favor. Nelms had a coming-out party in the win over Rhode Island earning his first career start in place of an injured Antoine Tharpe. Nelms earned The Sports Network National Rookie of the Week and CAA Rookie of the Week after posting a pair of interceptions including an 80-yard return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to help seal the win. To start the year, he had three forced turnovers in the first two games. THELLEN HAS THE HOT HANDS Free safety Darren Thellen has had the hot hands recently with five interceptions in the last five games. His five picks, including one returned 85- yards for a touchdown against Central Connecticut State, are a career-high and puts him just one shy of the program s top-10 for a single-season. 6 UMASS FOOTBALL GAME 10 at #13 MAINE UMASS OFFENSE FINDING RHYTHM UMass is ranked 5th in the CAA in scoring and 5th in total offense with 26.6 points per outing and yards per game. On the ground, UMass averages yards, while the Minutemen are posting yards in the air - 5th best in the CAA. Thanks in part to 21 first quarter points at Delaware and again at Richmond, UMass has 68 points this season in the first quarter. The Minutemen have made the fourth quarter their next highest scoring part of the game with 64 points. UMass has 128 first half points (14.2/game) for the year and 111 second half points (12.3/game). HERNANDEZ KEEPS THE GROUND GAME GOING STRONG Jonathan Hernandez is Hernandez 100 Yard Gms UMass top returning tailback Opponent Att-Yards-TD Richmond (10/29/11) and holds a feature role in Old Dominion (10/1/11) the offense this season. Last Rhode Island (9/17/11) year, he posted a career-high Holy Cross (9/1/11) carries for 938 yards and Rhode Island (11/20/10) James Madison (10/30/10) nine touchdowns. He also had Michigan (9/18/10) receptions for 211 yards William & Mary (9/3/10) and a score including a long of 64 yards in the seasonopener against William & Mary (9/4/10). New Hampshire (10/17/09) Stony Brook (9/26/09) For his career, Hernandez has 561 carries for 2,489 yards and 28 touchdowns. He turned in his best career running game earlier this season against Rhode Island with 32 carries and 167 yards to go with two touchdowns. An epitome of UMass hard-nosed play, Hernandez has turned in four 100-yard rushing performances this season. He had three-consecutive 100-yard games (dating back to last season) before being held to just 80 yards at Boston College. UMass is 8-2 in his career when he hits the 100-yard mark. Averaging yards per game this season, Hernandez ranks third in the CAA in rushing and is ranked 19th nationally. BIG MEN ON CAMPUS Offensive Line Starts The UMass offensive line averages 6-foot-4 and just over 300 pounds per lineman. Nick Speller (6-5, 334), Josh Samuda (6-4, 302) and Stephane Milhim (6-5, 315) are the returning starters from last year. Brian Ostaszewski (6-5, 304) earned starts in Key Offense Numbers Rush Yards Per Game: Pass Yards Per Game: First Downs Rush: 60 First Downs Pass: 113 Scoring: Time Of Possession: 29:41/game Player, Pos. Quinton Sales (6-2, 290) started five times last season at center as well making the left guard the only spot without a returning starter. Stephane Milhim made his first career start at right guard in the win over Rhode Island. Milhim showed his versatility again against Central Connecticut State when he started at center for an injured Quinton Sales. At Holy Cross, freshman Anddy Moas made his first career start at right guard, while Anthony Dima started at left tackle. Behind the solid group, UMass is averaging 3.6 yards per rush, yards per game and just under 2.0 rushing touchdowns per game. UMass has allowed just under 2 sacks per game. TALLEY TOP WIDEOUT THREAT Not only is redshirt senior Julian Talley the top returning wideout for the Minutemen, he is also the top returning threat in the CAA. Talley ranked second in the league last year with 67.9 yards per game. He ranked third with 5.09 catches per game as well. In 2010, he hauled in 56 receptions for a career-best 747 yards and six touchdowns. Talley also returned nine punts for 120 yards (13.3 yds/ return). In 43 career games, he has 150 catches for 1,926 yards and 10 scores. This season, Talley has 48 catches for 595 yards and 3 touchdowns. His 66.1 receiving yards per game ranks 5th in the CAA. In the loss to Villanova, Talley again broke his previous career high for catches (11) and yards (155) marking his fifth career 100-yard game. For the season, he has hit the century mark in receiving yards three times. In the Colonial Clash vs. New Hampshire, Talley again eclipsed the 100- yard mark (4th career time) setting then-career-highs in catches (10) and receiving yards (113). He also rushed for a touchdown giving him two scores on the ground this season. Against Rhode Island he had 8 catches for 108 yards and a touchdown marking the third time in his career that Showtime has posted a 100- yard receiving game. Enter the weekend, Talley has a reception in 26 consecutive games dating back to Oct. 10, 2009 at Delaware. He last went without a catch in a game on Sept. 26, 2009 against Stony Brook. All told, Talley has had a reception in every game in his career but four. JULMISTE AN ALL-AROUND THREAT All season long, the speedy Jesse Julmiste has shown why he is an allaround threat on the field: he is the second-leading wide receiver in terms of catches and yards, is the team s top kick returner, and even has four of rushing attempts. Julmiste currently ranks 15th in the nation for kickoff return average (26.9) and leads the CAA in the category. He is one of just three players in the country to have 2 kickoff return touchdowns this season. In terms of his play at wideout, Julmiste ranks 10th in the CAA in catches per game (4.1) and receiving yards per game (51.9) At Boston College, he had a career day setting a new UMass record for kickoff return yards (252) including just the fifth-ever 100-yard kickoff return in school history. He broke the previous record of 200 kickoff return yards set by Tim Berra in 1973 against Rhode Island. The single game nearly doubled his career kickoff return yards (300). At Richmond, Julmiste set new career highs for catches (7) and receiving yards (105). That marked his first career 100-yard receiving game. Against Central Connecticut State, Julmiste earned CAA Special Team Performer of the Week honors after returning four kickoffs for 148 yards highlighted by a 90-yard return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal UMass win over the Blue Devils. In the season-opener at Holy Cross, Julmiste led UMass with six catches for 61 yards and a touchdown, while also running the ball once, and posting 29 yards on a kickoff return. The Hatian native was one of UMass top kickoff return men in 2010 averaging 15.3 yards per return. His six catches surpassed his total number of catches in 2010 (3) as did his total receiving yards (61 compared to 32 in 2010). Against Rhode Island, he continued to show his versatility with a run for 15 yards, a catch for 15 yards and 51 kick return yards to finish the game third with 81 all-purpose yards for UMass. To date, he is averaging 12.6 yards per catch, 9.8 yards per rush and 26.9 yards per kick return. He has 725 kickoff return yards this season which ranks 2nd alltime at UMass for a single-season. For his career, he has 945 return yards which ranks 8th all-time at UMass. His 23.0 yard average is currently 8th all-time at UMass for career average.

7 TALENTED TIGHT ENDS ADD OFFENSIVE FLEXIBILITY Returning co-captain Emil Igwenagu and Rob Blanchflower are a pair of top-shelf tight ends for the UMass offense. At 6-foot-2, 245 pounds, Igwenagu has fully recovered from an injury that caused him to miss several games in Blanchflower, a redshirt sophomore, earned valuable playing time in place of Igwenagu last season. At 6-foot-4, 250 pounds, he also presents a sizable target while being an asset to the offensive line. Both players can line-up on the line of scrimmage, in the back field or split out allowing for a multitude of formations. That flexibility was on display at Holy Cross as Igwenagu scored his first career rushing touchdown while line-up as a fullback. Against Rhode Island, the pair combined for 7 catches and 57 yards including 4 catches for 34 yards and two carries for five yards by Igwenagu. At Old Dominion, Igwenagu had a career-high 10 catches for 85 yards and a touchdown. Igwenagu was just shy of becoming the first tight end at UMass since All-American Kerry Taylor in 1998 to post a 100-yard receiving game. Igwenagu had four catches for 99 yards in the win over Central Connecticut State. The 99 yards are the most receiving by a tight end since Taylor posted 119 on seven catches in UMass win over McNeese State on Nov. 28, 1998 in the First Round of the FCS NCAA Playoffs. He has 34 catches through nine games (a career best) and 341 yards (also a career best). For his career, he has 71 catches for 787 yards and 4 touchdowns (3 in 2011). NEW FACE CALLING THE PLAYS IN THE HUDDLE It was a neck-and-neck battle throughout the 2011 preseason training camp between quarterbacks Brandon Hill and Kellen Pagel. Hill redshirted the 2010 season behind Kyle Havens, while Pagel was at Bowling Green before transferring to UMass in the spring semester. The Minutemen are replacing Havens who led the CAA in passing with yards per game completing 219-of-345 attempts for 2,692 yards. Havens ranked 14th in the NCAA last year in pass efficiency and 25th in total offense. Hill earned the start at Holy Cross, while Pagel will start against Rhode Island. In the season-opener, Hill was 5-of-8 for 30 yards, while Pagel was 10- of-16 for 104 yards and two touchdowns. Pagel earned the start for the Rhode Island game going 21-of-32 for 259 yards and a touchdown. Hill started the Central Connecticut game after Pagel was injured at Old Dominion. Hill was 10-for-18 with 169 yards, a touchdown and no turnovers. Hill again started in the Villanova game where he posted the first 300-yard passing game of the season going 27-of-45 with one TD and 3 INTs. Hill missed much of the spring offseason as he recovered from a broken foot. Pagel is the son for former NFLer Mike Pagel who played quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts and L.A. Rams UMASS FOOTBALL GAME 10 at #13 MAINE 7 FOR GILSON, PERSEVERANCE PAYS OFF From scout team player to special teamer to one of UMass top wide receivers heading into 2011, Tom Gilson has continually impressed the coaching staff with his work and effort over the last five years. He s even punted twice (both at Rhode Island for 78 yards average and along of 42). Gilson s tattoo sums up his effort: Blessed is he who perseveres through the trial In 2011, Gilson has 29 catches for 336 yards including a career-high 6 receptions for 72 yards at Old Dominion. TRIO HANDLING SPECIAL TEAMS DUTIES Incumbent kicker/punter Caleb Violette will miss much of the year due to a reinjured foot suffered prior to camp. Brendon Levengood, who handled kick-offs last year, and Rice transfer Brandon Yelovich will handle the kicking duties, while Jeff Strait and Raymond Pendagast will handle punting. Strait averaged 39.2 yards per punt at Holy Cross with three of his six being dropped inside the 20-yard line. At Boston College, he posted five kicks for a 40.8 yard average including a booming 61-yard punt for his career long. Levengood booted a career-long 38-yard field goal at Boston College. In the win over Central Connecticut, he was 2-for-2 with field goals of 20 yards and 35 yards. Strait and Penadagast combined to drop five punts inside the 20-yard line in the win at Delaware. Two of their punts were key as Strait had a punt downed at the Delaware one-yard line midway through the first quarter and Pendagast pinned the Blue Hens on the two-yard line in the fourth quarter. THE TWO-SPORT DUO UMass has a pair of two-sport athletes on the team in Travis Tripucka, a member of the men s lacrosse team as a defender, is the team s fourth-year starting long-snapper. His father is former NBA sharpshooter and current TV analyst Kelly Tripucka. Gary Correia is in his first year as a corner back on the football team. He spent the last four years as a point guard on the basketball team including as a starter last year. He is working on his final six credits to graduate and decided to tryout for the football team after having not played in four years. Following the season, UMass had its highest NFL Draft pick in more than 40 years as All-American offensive lineman Vladimir Ducasse was drafted in the second round by the New York Jets. Five other UMass seniors from the class of 2009 signed as NFL free agents for 2010 training camps.
