Coach s comment of the week - KU in Tuscaloosa "It was a great opening weekend to give kids their first opportunity in a Division I setting and we had some kids really step up," head coach Ray Bechard said after the team's loss to Alabama "This was a very competitive tournament with quality teams. I was a little disappointed with how the last match went, but if you look at the whole weekend, we have a lot of positives to look at. We are excited to get home and play on Tuesday." Bechard Just 11 Wins Away From KU Milestone KU head coach Ray Bechard is just 11 wins away from becoming the winningest volleyball coach in KU history. Frankie Albitz, head coach of the Jayhawks from , finished her career with a (.515) record in nine seasons at KU. Bechard (Grinnell, Kan.) is in his ninth season at KU and carries a career coaching record of over 22 seasons. He led the Jayhawks to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2003 and earned postseason bids in 2004 and Bechard is assisted by Jill Jones Stucky (Goodland, Kan.), who is in her ninth season at KU, and Christi Posey (Wichita, Kan.), who has been coaching the Jayhawks for seven seasons. Uhart Sidelined By Injury Due to an injury, Jayhawk middle blocker Natalie Uhart will be sidelined for the 2006 season, head coach Ray Bechard announced Aug. 21. Uhart (Lansing, Kan.), a junior transfer, suffered a knee injury Aug. 19 in a preseason scrimmage. Uhart, voted the 2006 Big 12 Conference Preseason Newcomer of the Year, was recently granted an additional year of eligibility by the Big West Conference after a 2005 medical hardship season at Long Beach State. Record Chasers With the departure of 2005 senior record-breakers Josi Lima and Andi Rozum, a duo of Jayhawks will look to take their turns climbing the career and single-season lists in Despite having two of her seasons cut short by injuries, senior outside hitter Jana Correa ranks fifth on the KU career attack percentage list with a.253 hitting efficiency and sixth in aces per game (0.33). She also ranks fourth among all hitters with 3.51 kills per game for her career. After a stellar sophomore season, junior Emily Brown ranks in the top 10 in single-season aces (44), aces per game (0.40) and solo blocks (29).
3 Preseason Honors KU junior Natalie Uhart was voted Big 12 Conference Preseason Newcomer of the Year and junior Emily Brown was named Preseason All-Big 12, the league office announced Aug. 2. Uhart is the second Jayhawk in four years to earn the preseason honor (Paula Caten, 2003). Uhart was named to the Big West Conference All-Freshman Team in 2003 after leading Long Beach State with 1.04 blocks per game. During her sophomore season, Uhart was plagued with injuries and appeared in 30 games, in which she compiled a.336 attack percentage. Brown has started all every match of her career at KU and averaged 2.99 kills, 2.20 digs and a team-leading 0.40 services aces in Brown totaled double-digit kills on 16 occasions and improved her average to 3.25 kpg in Big 12 matches as a sophomore. The 2004 Preseason Big 12 Freshman of the Year was also a former Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Kansas. KU Picked Seventh in Preseason Big 12 Coaches Poll Nebraska was named the preseason favorite to win the Big 12 title for the 10th consecutive season in a vote of the league s head coaches. Texas was second behind NU with 93 points, including three first-place votes. The Longhorns were followed by Missouri (3rd), Kansas State (4th) and Texas A&M (5th) filling the top five spots. Colorado was sixth with Kansas (7th), Iowa State (8th), Baylor (9th), Oklahoma (10th) and Texas Tech (11th) rounding out the poll. Jayhawks Earn Game Plan/AVCA Team Academic Award Kansas volleyball achieved yet another program-first Aug. 9 when it earned the Game Plan/American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for the season. The Jayhawks, who posted a 3.43 grade point average last year, were one of 54 NCAA Division I squads to achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher. The award, initiated in the academic year, honors college and high school teams that display excellence in the classroom. Each school received a plaque and each player a certificate commemorating the designation. This award is a testament to the hard work of our team, staff and academic advisor, Dr. Scott Ward, head coach Ray Bechard said. "We hope to continue our academic success and enjoy this honor every year." 2005 Season in Review Despite a depleted roster and a few mid-season setbacks, Kansas rounded out 2005 with its third consecutive trip the the NCAA Tournament. With two starters out with injuries, the Jayhawks shuffled their lineup and managed to end their season with a record. After starting the season with an 8-1 non-conference mark, the Jayhawks started Big 12 play with a sweep of #15 Texas A&M and went on to post big league victories at Colorado and Kansas State. Despite a 7-13 conference record, KU was one of seven Big 12 teams to make an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. KU fell to 16th-seeded, #12-ranked UCLA, 3-1, Dec. 3 in first round action at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles. Three talented seniors -- Josi Lima, Paula Caten and Andi Rozum -- left huge marks on the KU program. Lima is KU s only four-time All-Big 12 First Team selection and all-time career kills leader; Caten became KU s first-ever volleyball Academic All-American after maintaining a 4.0 in her two years at Kansas; and Rozum left KU the all-time career assists and assists per game leader. 22 RAY BECHARD - HEAD COACH - NINTH SEASON AT KANSAS - FORT HAYS STATE, 1980 Among the winningest coaches at the collegiate volleyball level, Ray Bechard enters his ninth season at Kansas after leading the Jayhawks to three straight NCAA Tournament bids and arguably the best three seasons in the program s 31-year history. Bechard has taken the Kansas program to new heights since his arrival in Lawrence prior to the 1998 season. The Sunflower State native holds a remarkable all-time coaching record of and has led the Jayhawks to a mark over the past nine seasons. Bechard led the Jayhawks to a overall record and their third-straight postseason appearance in Despite a depleted roster due to injuries, KU battled No. 16 UCLA to four games in Los Angeles in the NCAA Tournament First Round. The 2005 season also saw the careers of senior standouts Josi Lima, Paula Caten and Andi Rozum come to a close. Lima, KU s only four-time All-Big 12 First Team selection, finished her career as the Jayhawks all-time kills leader and one of the most prolific volleyball players in school history. Caten, who played two seasons at KU, was named the school s first-ever volleyball Academic All-American by ESPN the Magazine for achieving a 4.0 grade point average over the course of her career. Rozum, a four-year starter, finished her career as KU s all-time assists leader and holds three single-season marks for assists per game. In addition to his team s achievements and the individual successes of his seniors, Bechard reached a significant milestone on Sept. 10, 2005, when he coached his 1,000th career match. The Jayhawks commemorated the milestone by defeating visiting Michigan State, 3-0. In 2004, KU returned to the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight season and fell just short of a Sweet 16 appearance. The Jayhawks defeated Santa Clara, 3-1, before falling to host Washington, 3-2, in second-round action. KU came back from a two-game deficit to battle the Huskies, who advanced to the Final Four in Long Beach, Calif., and won the National Championship in In addition to the Jayhawks return to the postseason, KU enjoyed a record and 9-11 mark in Big 12 play. The 2004 team overcame injuries and a tough five-match losing streak to finish strong while four talented seniors made their mark on the program. In 2003, KU achieved the most victories since 1991 (22), the most conference wins in school history (13) and the highest finish in the conference race (tied for third) since joining the Big 12 in The greatest highlight of the 2003 season came when Bechard and the Jayhawks were invited to participate in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. KU shocked powerhouse Long Beach State by sweeping the Beach 3-0 in first round action before falling to host No. 4 Pepperdine 3-1 in the NCAA Second Round in Malibu, Calif. Bechard also reached two significant coaching milestones in 2003 as he recorded his 800th career victory and 100th win at Kansas. Not only has Bechard emphasized success on the volleyball court, but his teams also excel in the classroom. A total of 25 Jayhawks have received Academic All-Big 12 honors since his arrival at KU in 1998, while 23 of his student-athletes were recognized as Academic All-Americans at Barton County. Most recently, four Jayhawks earned Academic All- Big 12 honors in Fall 2005 as the team registered a program-best GPA of The squad then boasted a 3.33 GPA in Spring 2006 along with seven other KU teams that achieved a 3.0 or better for the semester. For the academic year, Bechard s squad achieved a cumulative 3.43 GPA, earning a Game Plan/AVCA Team Academic Award for the first time in program history. Bechard came to KU after spending 13 years as the head coach at Barton County Community College in Great Bend, Kan. After a stellar career at BCCC, Bechard was inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association Volleyball Hall of Fame in In 13 seasons at Barton County, Bechard posted a career record of (.923 winning percentage). He completed his career at BCCC with the highest all-time winning percentage among junior college/community college coaches and ranked fourth all-time with 716 career wins. Twice (1990 and 1993) Bechard was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association National Junior College Coach of the Year and 12 times he was selected the AVCA District IV Coach of the Year. In 1995, he was an assistant coach for the USA Volleyball Youth National Team that won the Slovakian Cup Championship in Zilina, Slovakia. Bechard, who was the only non-division I coach on the staff, coached alongside TCU s Sandy Troudt and Penn State assistant Erin Tomblin. The team competed against youth teams from Poland and Slovakia. Bechard began his coaching career when he served three years ( ) as the head coach of the girls volleyball team and the boys basketball team at Lewis High School in Lewis, Kan. There he directed LHS to a pair of conference titles on the volleyball court. A member of the board of directors of the American Volleyball Coaches Association from , he has presented at the AVCA National Convention on two different occasions. Bechard was also president of the NJCAA Volleyball Coaches Association from A native of Grinnell, Kan., Bechard played basketball at Barton County, where he helped the Cougars to a record in his two seasons at the school. Following his junior college playing career, Bechard attended Fort Hays State University where he graduated with a bachelor s degree in physical education in Two years later in 1982, he received his master s degree in physical education from Fort Hays State. The Kansas native is married to the former Pamela Brown. The couple has a daughter, Ashley, who was a KU letterwinner in volleyball from , and a son, Brennan, who is a sophomore on the Kansas men s basketball team.
