Rollie White Coliseum in College Station, Texas. The two squads squared off against each other just three weeks ago in Norman. In that match up both teams were looking for their first Big 12 win of the season. The Aggies, ranked No. 23 at the time, took the four-game match (25-30, 30-25, 26-30, 22-30) at the Howard McCasland Field House. In that match up, A&M s All-American, Laura Jones, was a dominant factor in the Aggie victory. Jones put away 30 kills on a.333 clip while also collecting 14 digs on the defensive end. TAMU hit at a.285 clip while OU followed with a.214 clip. The Aggies owned the advantage at the net, recording 13 blocks to OU s eight. For Oklahoma, sophomore Anna Stadel and junior Eliane Santos led the way for the Sooners. Stadel recorded a career-high 17 kills while Santos followed with 15. Junior Joanna Schmitt led the defensive effort and finished with a match-high 14 digs. Since that last meeting, each team has only posted one Big 12 win. The Aggies have dropped their last four straight, including a sweep to No. 14 Texas Wednesday night, and have fallen out of the top-25 poll. On the other hand, Oklahoma arrives with momentum after avenging an earlier season loss to Texas Tech by beating the Red Raiders, 3-2, this past Wednesday in Norman. Now, Texas A&M and Oklahoma sit in the bottom two spots of the conference, respectively. Oklahoma owns a 6-15 overall mark and 1-11 record in league play while Texas A&M posts a 9-11 season record and a 2-9 mark in Big 12 play. The Aggies only other conference win beside Oklahoma came at Iowa State (3-1). Jones continues to spearhead the Aggie offense as she leads the nation with 5.75 kills per game. Despite the loss to Texas on Wednesday, Jones pounded a matchhigh 14 kills and added a match-high 12 digs. Complementing Jones and the Aggie offense is middle blocker Christi Hahn who adds 2.74 KPG and is hitting at a team-high.297 clip. As an offensive unit, the Aggies fall among the bottom half of the Big 12, but still own the advantage over the Sooners. Texas A&M is outhitting Oklahoma,.225 to.192 and is averaging KPG to OU s Defensively, TAMU is collecting digs per game (fifth in the Big 12). The back row leader for the Aggies is senior Holly Clay who is third in the league with her 4.18 DPG mark. Jones is a defensive presence as well, adding 3.07 DPG (11th in the Big 12) for the TAMU defense. At the net, Oklahoma owns the advantage as it averages 2.82 blocks per game compared to TAMU s 2.54 output. The Sooners need to take control at the net in order to contain TAMU s Jones. Middle blockers Eliane Santos and Anna Stadel are coming off impressive performances in the win against Texas Tech. Santos and Stadel each posted 10 block assists, setting an OU five-game rally-scoring record. The same effort will be needed against A&M as the Aggies outplayed the Sooners at the net in the last meeting. Another key factor in the match will be the errors committed by the Sooners. THE AGGIES The Sooners suffered a four-game loss (25-30, 30-25, 26-30, 22-30) in Norman as the Texas A&M Aggies clinched their first Big 12 win of the season three weeks ago. Sophomore Anna Stadel and junior Eliane Santos led the Sooner offense with 17 and 15 kills, respectively. The Aggie offense was led by All-American Laura Jones who put away 30 kills on the night. next up for the sooners Oklahoma faces a tough challenge in undefeated and No. 1 Nebraska next Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. in Lincoln, Neb. In the earlier meeting this season, Oklahoma became the first Big 12 school to take the Huskers to four games in the loss (30-28, 25-30, 29-31, 20-30). TIME CHANGE A quick note: Oklahoma s match against Texas A&M this Friday, originally scheduled for 6:30 p.m., has been moved to 6 p.m. TECH LEFTOVERS In a five-game victory (30-25, 30-32, 30-21, 27-30, 15-13) over Texas Tech, Oklahoma claimed its first Big 12 win of the season in front of a home crowd at the Howard McCasland Field House in Norman. Oklahoma had a balanced offensive attack with four Sooners posting double-digit kills and juniors Joanna Schmitt (12 kills, 17 digs) and Eliane Santos (18 kills, 10 block assists) collecting double-doubles on the night. In addition, the Sooners set three different five-game rally-scoring records. monsen on a roll Since entering the lineup as the libero in the past three matches, junior Anna Monsen has been impressive. The defensive specialist has been the starting libero in the past two of three matches and has averaged 3.82 digs per game during that time. In Wednesday night s win over Texas Tech, Monsen set a five-game rallyscoring record with 26 digs in the contest. RECORD SETTING MATCH The Sooners set three records in their win over Texas Tech, adding to the seven they had already set this season. Adding to Anna Monsen s record night, Anna Stadel and Eliane Santos recorded 10 block assists each, eclipsing the previous mark for a rally-scoring fivegame match of 9. With the middle blockers efforts, the squad also set a team block assist mark with 42 block assists in the match. offensive comparison Since the arrival of head coach Santiago Restrepo last season, the Oklahoma statistics continue to improve. Schmitt hit at an impressive.547 clip in tournament action while pounding 42 kills and collecting 16 digs in two matches. WEiland Serves UP new Record Sophomore transfer Sarah Weiland, a Tulane product, broke all sorts of records after serving up nine aces against Loyola-Chicago Friday afternoon. Weiland set an Oklahoma sideout-scoring record as well as a new rally-scoring record. Former Sooner Sheena Werling held the rally-scoring record with six aces while Gloria Holcomb held the sideout record with eight. In addition, the Sooners totaled 17 aces which set a new team-rally scoring record. Weiland also set new Big 12 records with her strong performance. She now holds the four-game rally scoring aces record mark in the conference. The previous record was eight and held by Katia Lara of Texas (2000). Currently, Weiland leads all Big 12 players with 15 aces on the season (1.25 per game). SCHMITT sets New career mark It only took her one match into the 2005 season to break the rally-scoring career record in digs for the Sooners. Junior Joanna Schmitt, a preseason All Big 12 selection, set the new career bench mark of 622 digs after collecting a team-high 13 digs in her first outing of the season (8/27). The Cottage Grove, Wis., native already owns the rallyscoring career mark in kills with a current tally of 990 and two more seasons ahead of her. Additionally, Schmitt is on pace to break the rally-scoring aces mark (73) and needs only 14 more to do so. Schmitt led the team in aces in 2004 after recording 20 over the course of last season. SCHMITT NAMED PRESEASON ALL-BIG 12 Oklahoma volleyball standout Joanna Schmitt has been chosen as a preseason All-Big 12 selection for The 5-10 junior outside hitter was picked by the league s head coaches and was one of 13 players voted to the squad. As last year s team captain Schmitt nailed a team-leading 425 kills for an average of 4.01 kills per game, which ranked ninth among all Big 12 players. The Cottage Grove, Wis., native also produced 13 double-doubles on the season, led the team in service aces with 20 and ranked second on the team in digs with 285. SOONERS PICKED TO FINISH NINTH In the Big 12 Coaches Preseason Poll, the OU volleyball squad was picked to finish in ninth place in the conference race. The Sooners finished ninth in 2004 above Baylor and Iowa State. Defending Big 12 Champion Nebraska and current No. 1 in the country was chosen as the preseason favorite for the conference crown. 4 HEAD COACH SANTIAGO RESTREPO 4Second Season At OU 4Seventh As Head Coach 4Career Record: (.610) Familiarity surrounds the OU volleyball program as second year coach Santiago Restrepo enters the 2005 season. A year after leading Oklahoma to its best finish since 1997, Restrepo now returns five starters and has signed an elite class of five newcomers that include a two-time Junior College All-American and four others that will be expected to contribute immediately to the lineup. It is quite clear why excitement and enthusiasm surround the 2005 squad as it enters the second season of the Restrepo era. In his first season at the helm of the Sooner program, he led the 2004 OU squad to a record. No Sooner squad had produced a better record since the 1997 squad that reached the NCAA Tournament. While it was a significant achievement for the rookie Sooner coach, Restrepo was not satisfied with a ninth place conference finish. At the forefront of Restrepo s mind is determination to reach the NCAA Tournament and finish in the upper echelon of the Big 12 Conference. In Restrepo fashion, he has made it clear to his players and others around the league that hard work will be the means to get there. The reigning Conference USA Coach of the Year, Restrepo, left Southern Mississippi to fulfill a dream of coaching in the Big 12. Restrepo completed his third season at USM and led his 2003 team to a program-best 27-6 record. That squad reeled off three winning streaks of at least six matches, including one eight-win string, the longest in school history. Three Golden Eagle players garnered All-Conference USA honors during Restrepo s tenure, including two in the most recently completed season. He left Southern Miss with a record of (.565) and an overall mark of (.638). Prior to coaching at Southern Miss, Restrepo served three seasons ( ) as an assistant coach at Saint Louis University under Marilyn Nolen. A native of Bogota, Colombia, Restrepo served as the women s head coach at East Stroudsburg (Pa.) University from He led the Warriors to a record and a semifinal finish in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in his first season in the league. Also highly involved in the international circuit and USA Volleyball, Restrepo was selected as co-head coach of one of two USA Volleyball under-22 select teams that toured Argentina in June The squads, which included OU junior Joanna Schmitt, traveled Buenos Aires and the surrounding cities competing against the Argentina Youth National Team. The Sooners snapped their 12-match losing streak and pushed their overall mark to 6-15 and 1-11 in Big 12 play. The Red Raiders dropped to and 4-7 in conference play. In a match that saw 43 tied scores and 19 lead changes, the Sooners won their first five-game match of the season after dropping four earlier this season. The Red Raiders only hit at a.138 clip for the match while the Sooners output was.059 higher. In addition, Tech added 39 errors while Oklahoma only tallied 33 in the match. Defensively, the Sooners shattered three different fivegame rally-scoring records. Sophomore Anna Stadel and junior Eliane Santos each tallied 10 block assists, breaking the previous individual rally-scoring mark of nine shared by three Sooners (including Stadel). With the help of Stadel and Santos, Oklahoma also broke the five-game rally-scoring team block assists mark. The defense combined for 42 block assists on the night, breaking the previous mark of 38 (also set against Texas Tech in 2004). OU s 22 total team blocks bested Tech s by six. In the back row, junior Anna Monsen made her second start of the season at libero and had an impressive performance, collecting a career-high 26 digs. In addition, that mark set a new OU rally-scoring record (the earlier mark was 21). Overall, the team collected 72 digs on the night compared to Texas Tech s 64. Oklahoma had a balanced offensive attack on the night with five Sooners recording double-digit kills. Santos led the way, pounding a team-high 18 kills on a.275 clip to post a double-double on the evening (10 block assists). Sophomore Sarah Weiland followed with 14 kills while hitting at.385. Schmitt collected a double-double with a 12-kill, 17-dig performance. Junior Laura Tomes posted a match-high.450 clip while pounding 10 kills and adding seven block assists. Senior Gabriela Tonon rounded out the Sooner scoring with her 10 kills on the night. Setters Julie Chester and Rachel Jackson were efficient on offense, tallying 35 and 26 assists, respectively. Chester was also solid defensively, collecting nine digs against the Red Raiders. Despite the loss, Texas Tech s Philister Sang, a junior transfer, had an impressive outing with 27 kills on the night. Senior libero Desiree Batista collected 18 digs for the Tech defense. AT COLORADO, 0-3 (10/22) The Oklahoma volleyball team was unable to avenge its earlier season loss to Colorado when it suffered a sweep (30-24, 30-28, 30-25) to the Buffaloes in Boulder, Colo., Saturday afternoon. The win pushed the Buffs record to 9-7 overall and 5-6 in Big 12 play while the Sooners dropped to 5-15 and 0-11 in conference action. The Sooner offense was never able to get on track in the match and only hit at a.161 clip, compared to the Buffaloes.238 clip. Sophomore Sarah Weiland led the offensive production, tallying 10 of OU s 39 kills for the match. It marked the first time this season that Weiland solely recorded the most kills of any Sooner in a match. Adding to Weiland s production was junior Joanna Schmitt who tallied nine kills and led the team with a clip of.250. Defensively, Colorado owned the advantage in digs, claiming 48 total digs, nine more than the Sooners. However, the Sooners continued their solid play at the net, recording 13.0 team blocks to CU s 7.5. AT #10 MISSOURI, 0-3 (10/19) The Oklahoma volleyball team fell in three games (24-30, 26-30, 22-30) to No. 10 Missouri, its sixth ranked opponent to face this season, at the Hearnes Center in Columbia, Mo., Wednesday evening. With the loss, the Sooners dropped to 5-14 on the season and 0-10 in conference play while the Tigers pushed their record to 14-2 and 8-2 in Big 12 play. For the 15th match this season, junior Eliane Santos posted double-digit kills. The middle blocker pounded a match-high 14 kills on a team-high.400 clip while also adding five block assists at the net. With the win, Iowa State pushed its overall mark to 12-8 and 5-4 in conference play while the Sooners fell to 5-13 and 0-9 in the Big 12. Despite dropping its 10th straight match, Oklahoma had four Sooners tally double-digit kills in the four-game match. Junior Eliane Santos posted a match-high 21 kills on a.366 clip. AT BAYLOR, 1-3 (10/12) The Oklahoma volleyball team fell in four games (23-30, 30-21, 30-26, 30-28) to Baylor Wednesday night inside the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas. The Bears defended their home court and improved to 10-9 overall and 2-6 in Big 12 play. The Sooners, still trying to snap a nine-match losing streak, fell to 5-12 and 0-8 in league action. Despite a career night by junior transfer Eliane Santos, the Sooners were unable to hold on. The middle blocker was a nuisance to the Baylor offense as she posted a career-high 10 block assists, one shy of the OU four-game rally-scoring record, and collected eight digs. Santos had an impressive night on the offensive side with 14 kills on a.300 clip while adding four aces, another career high. Schmitt contributed 14 kills to the OU offense while recording six digs on the defensive end. Monsen had an impressive outing and started the final two frames as well, collecting a season-high 12 digs. #23 TEXAS a&m, 1-3 (10/8) The Oklahoma volleyball squad endured a tough 3-1 loss to No. 23 Texas A&M, its third ranked opponent in two weeks, inside the Howard McCasland Field House Saturday night. The Aggies and Sooners were both battling it out for their first conference win of the season, with A&M taking the four-game match (30-25, 25-30, 30-26, 30-22). The Sooners dropped to 5-11 overall and 0-7 in the Big 12, extending their losing streak to eight matches. The Aggies broke their six-match losing streak with the win and pushed their record to 8-7 and 1-5 in conference action. Statistically, the teams couldn t have matched up any better against each other. Both squads pounded 61 kills each while A&M bested OU in hitting percentage with a.285 clip, compared to the Sooners.214. OU collected 48 digs while A&M tallied 49. The Aggies did own the advantage at the net with 13 team blocks compared to OU s eight. OU was unable to stop Texas A&M s Laura Jones, who pounded 30 kills on a.333 clip in the match. ORAL ROBERTS, 2-3 (10/7) In its longest match of the season (2:37), the Oklahoma volleyball squad couldn t hang on as it suffered a 3-2 (21-30, 30-25, 34-32, 24-30, 17-19) loss to Oral Roberts, its final non-conference opponent of the season, at the Cooper Aerobics Center in Tulsa, Okla. The Sooners, stepping out of Big 12 play for the first time in seven matches, dropped their overall record to 5-10 and finalized its non-conference mark to 5-4 for the season. The Golden Eagles extended their record to 9-7. OU s Schmitt led the Sooners and finished the night with her third double-double of the season on a match-high 22 kills and 10 digs. The Longhorns shut down the Sooners in three games, 30-16, and Oklahoma struggled on both sides of the ball Saturday night. OU s offense hit.074, compared to UT s.422 clip, while defensively, the Longhorns tallied 34 digs to the Sooners 15. On a night with low offensive production from the Sooners, preseason All-Big 12 selection Joanna Schmitt led OU with nine kills and a team-high four digs. Defensively, Leticia Armstrong stopped OU at the net with four block assists while Alyson Jennings led UT s back row with a match-high 12 digs. #1 nebraska, 1-3 (9/28) In an exciting match in front of 759 raucous fans, the Oklahoma volleyball squad took the top-ranked Nebraska Huskers to four games (30-28, 25-30, 29-31, 20-30) in a tough 1-3 loss inside the Howard McCasland Field House Wednesday night. It marked only the third time this season that the No. 1 Huskers had been taken to more than three games in a match. In addition, the Sooners are the only Big 12 team to take NU to four games this season. I saw a lot of great things tonight, head coach Santiago Restrepo said. We re competing at a much higher level with a lot better consistency. I know that we re getting better and I m excited to see what our program will continue to do. We gained a lot of confidence tonight after hanging tough with the top team in the nation. The Sooners jumped on the board first with an ace by Julie Chester in the first set. The only time the Sooners trailed in the was for a short time at OU regained momentum off of a Sarah Weiland kill and took the first game from the Huskers 30-28, when another Weiland kill sealed the game.
