Missouri Volleyball - NCAA Tournament - First/Second Rounds News & Notes Scouting Santa Clara The No. 21 Santa Clara Broncos are set for a rematch with the Missouri Tigers in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament as the Broncos were selected to their ninth consecutive tournament. Santa Clara reached the Final Four last year before losing to 3-0 to Nebraska in a surprise run for the unseeded Broncos. Santa Clara is hoping for the same sort of magic against Missouri as the two teams met earlier this season in the Texas Invitational where the Broncos rallied to a 3-1 victory after dropping the first game. Santa Clara was ranked No. 4 in the nation at the time while the Missouri Tigers were No. 15. In the match, Santa Clara hit.309 compared to Missouri s.195 hitting percentage in the match. Both teams struggled with serves and each team committed 10 service errors. Missouri outblocked the Broncos 13-7, but their hitting woes were too much to overcome as the Tigers hit as low as.053 in game two. Senior outside hitter Kim McGiven led the Broncos with 21 kills and 14 digs and sophomore outside hitter Brittany Lowe also recorded a double-double with 17 kills and digs. Middle blocker Annalisa Muratore had 15 kills and setter Crystal Matich also had a doubledouble with 58 assists and 17 digs. The Broncos lost Muratore after she retired from volleyball competition on Sept. 26, 2006 due to lingering injuries. Muratore is Santa Clara s all-time career leader in blocks with 1.30 per game and also in hitting percentage with.374. Santa Clara finishes the regular season with a 20-7 record and went 9-5 in the West Coast Conference. McGiven leads the team with 4.30 kills per game and junior middle blocker Anna Cmaylo is second on the team with 3.83 kills per game. Libero Caroline Walters leads the Broncos with 4.35 digs per game and Matich has assists per game. Santa Clara ranks in the top-25 in the nation in several categories. As of Nov. 19, the Broncos are 22nd in the nation in assists per game with The Broncos are 25th in the nation with a.262 hitting percentage and are 30th in the nation with kills per game. Cmaylo is 12th in the nation with a.407 hitting percentage. The Broncos have faced four common opponents with Missouri. The Broncos swept then- No. 25 Kansas State, Valparaiso 3-0 and then No. 21 Notre Dame. Santa Clara were swept by then-no. 7 Texas. Missouri defeated Valparaiso 3-1 and then-no. 21 Notre Dame 3-2. The Tigers defeated Kansas State twice and split the series with Texas. Santa Clara leads the overall series with the Missouri Tigers 1-0, with their first ever meeting occurring this season. -- Mustafa Mohammad Vander Kooi CoSIDA Academic All-American Late Monday afternoon the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced that Vander Kooi was voted to the organization s Academic All-American Second Team. Vander Kooi, a native of Hinton, Iowa, and two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree, becomes the first Tiger volleyballer to receive such an award since Vander Kooi, an International Business major with a 3.84 GPA, becomes only the third volleyball Tiger to be voted to the CoSIDA team. Dianne Berg and Kathy Oriel made the list in 1985 and 1986, respectively. All-Big 12 Award Winners The Big 12 Conference announced Monday afternoon the conference s year-end volleyball awards. Tiger senior OH Jessica Vander Kooi (Hinton, Iowa) was named to the All-Big 12 First Team for the third-consecutive year while senior MB Nicole Wilson (Lincoln, Neb.) received honorable mention All-Big 12 honors for the second-consecutive year. Vander Kooi finished the 2006 Big 12 season in the top 10 of three scoring categories including kills per game (7th, 4.05), service aces per game (7th, 0.33), and points per game (5th, 4.88). In addition, Vander Kooi was named Big 12 Player of the Week twice in September and earned AVCA National Player of the Week honors on September 22. Vander Kooi also landed on the Academic All-Big 12 list for the third-consecutive season. Wilson finished the conference season in fifth place in hitting percentage (.341) and tenth in kills per game (3.63). Wilson leads Mizzou in the all-time hitting percentage category at a.350 clip. Quickly, The Season in Review Coming off the best season in school history, the 2006 Tigers have experienced a rollercoaster like year, filled with critical highs and lows. The youthful team got its first bump when traveling to Long Beach State for the 49ers invitational. A slow start led Mizzou to being swept by the Beach for the first time by a nonranked team since September But, a five-match winning streak that peaked with a emotional five-game winner over then- No. 21 Notre Dame kept momentum going. The Tigers next ran into three-tough opponents in the third week of play, all which ended the season with a top-25 RPI. Then- No. 2 Penn State and then-no. 4 Santa Clara defeated Mizzou in three and four games, respectively. At Colorado to open the conference season, the Tigers lost a five-gamer. But, the Tigers then went on the roll that help secure them an NCAA Tournament bid, winning seven-consecutive matches within the conference including a huge, 30-23, 30-23, 30-19, sweep over then-no. 5 Texas, the largest seed a Tiger team has ever defeated. Mizzou peaked on the AVCA poll at No. 12 on October 16. The Tigers then went on a 1-5 slide that included two losses at the hands of No. 1 Nebraska and a sweep loss at surprising Oklahoma. A Friday night five-game fright at Baylor stole some wind from the Tigers sail. The most crucial win in getting the Tigers in the NCAA Tournament was a four-game win over Colorado on November 4. At the time, the importance was not known. But without Missouri quick Facts General Information Location Columbia, Mo. 5 News & Notes the win, Mizzou would have had only one win over a top-25 RPI team (Texas) and may well have cost Mizzou a bid. The Tigers were dominate over the Buffs at home, winning 30-23, 30-17, 28-30, The Tigers gave a scare to the Longhorns again, this time in Austin on November 11. Mizzou won game one in a squeaker, but Texas fired back and held Mizzou to a game loss in the clinching game four. The Tigers showed a lot of resiliency in a fivegame loss at home to Oklahoma. One of the more emotional and heart pounding games seen in a while, the Tiger-Sooner match-up went the full-12 rounds in boxing terms. The match saw 40 total ties and included a game five that had Mizzou with four match points, but Mizzou lost the game to OU A loss at Texas A&M in the final of week of the season dropped Mizzou 12 spots in the RPI from 34 to 46 and put the Tigers squarely on the bubble. Hearts were racing on Sunday as the selection committee released the final bracket. Mizzou being in the last group announced did not help matters. Nonetheless, the season continues. A Big Milestone When winning their 10th Big 12 match of the season, Mizzou volleyball secured a nice achievement. In the past seven years, every year beginning with 2000, only Missouri and Nebraska have won 10-or-more conference matches in each of those seven years. In addition, with Missouri earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, only the Tigers and Nebraska have made every tournament since Texas missed out on a bid in 2003, Colorado missed in 2002, Kansas State will likely miss the 2006 tournament for the first time in 11 years, and Texas A&M missed this year s tournament for the first time since Last Time We Met Santa Clara AUSTIN, Texas, SEPT 8 The No. 15 Missouri volleyball team (6-3) fell to No. 4 Santa Clara (6-1) on Friday afternoon at the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas, losing 30-24, 18-30, 20-30, The Tigers had to face two top-five teams in two days and while Mizzou won game one, they were unable to contain the Broncos offense. Senior Jessica Vander Kooi paced Mizzou with 15 kills. Vander Kooi (Hinton, Iowa) recorded a double-double adding 10 digs and four blocks. Nicole Wilson (Lincoln, Neb.) scored 15 kills and added six blocks. Freshman Lei Wang scored a double-double with 43 assists and 11 digs, adding three blocks. Vander Kooi and Wilson Make Fourth and Final NCAA Appearance Seniors Jessica Vander Kooi and Nicole Wilson have been through this before. The duo have played in each of the Tigers seven NCAA tournament matches since their freshman year in As a freshman, Vander Kooi had a heckuva match in a losing effort against UC-Irvine in the first-round in Los Angeles. Vander Kooi solidified herself as a future force, scoring 23 kills, adding 18 digs, five aces and five blocks for 32.5 total points. Vander Kooi averages 3.04 kills per game, 3.15 digs per game, and 0.96 blocks per game in her career of NCAA Tournament play. Wilson was named to the NCAA Penn State Regional All-Tournament team a year ago. In the regional semifinals versus Hawaii, Wilson scored seven blocks, adding eight kills in a winning Tiger effort. Against Tennessee in the regional finals, Wilson scored 15 kills, adding six digs. Ailes, A Record Breaker Junior libero Tatum Ailes has smashed some records of her own, including her own singleseason digs record, now standing at 519 for the season. Ailes now also holds the all-time record at Mizzou in career digs, standing at 1,388 and digs per game at Four Named to Academic All-Big 12 Team Abbie Booth, Jessica Vander Kooi, Lei Wang, and Na Yang were named to the Academic All- Big 12 first-team for the 2006 season. Booth and Vander Kooi make their third appearance on the list while Yang and Wang make the list for the first time. Big 12 Report: Tournament Edition Three Big 12 teams, Nebraska, Texas, and Oklahoma, earned a seed in this year s NCAA Tournament, as Nebraska earned the top seed overall, Texas the seventh seed, and Oklahoma the 13th seed. Three more teams, Missouri, Iowa State and Colorado, joined the top three in making the tournament, giving the Big 12 a total of six teams, which is second behind only the Big 10, Pac 10, and SEC, which each have seven teams in the tournament. Texas, Nebraska, and Colorado, will each be hosting first and second round matches. Of those three, Colorado has the hardest of the three subregionals, as they host New Mexico State, who went 33-3 with two losses to Hawaii, Colorado State, which is making its 12 straight appearance in the tournament after defeating Utah to win the Mountain west Conference, and defending champion Washington, which earned the sixth seed overall. Colorado faces New Mexico State, while Colorado State faces Washington, with the winners facing off on Friday for the right to move on to the Seattle, Washington Regional. Texas, which also hosts the Austin Regional, drew Alabama, Prairie View, and Stephen F. Austin in its subregional. The Longhorns face Prairie View, with the winner playing the Alabama Stephen F. Austin winner for a chance to move on. Top seed Nebraska, like Texas, also hosts a subregional in Lincoln. In the Huskers draw, they received Patriot League champion American University, which went to the Lincoln sibregional last year, Winthrop University, which is making its fifth straight appearance in the tournament, and Northern Iowa, who is on a ten match winning streak. The Huskers face American and Winthrop and Northern Iowa face off for a chance to move on to the Gainesville Regional, hosted by the University of Florida. Oklahoma, making its fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and first since 1997, earned the number 13 seed, but travels to Fayettville, Arkansas as part of the Arkansas subregional. 6 Missouri Volleyball - NCAA Tournament - First/Second Rounds News & Notes State. The Sooners play Oral Roberts, a team they swept earlier this season, in their first round match, while Arkansas plays Missouri State. The two winners face off for a chance to move on to the Honolulu Regional, hosted by the University of Hawaii. The remaining two teams, Iowa State and Missouri, each drew tough draws as well. Iowa State was placed in a subregional with tenth seeded and host Wisconsin, a hot Notre Dame team, and a team that has won 15 straight in Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Cyclones, who will be making only their second NCAA Tournament appearance, will face University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, which is making its sixth NCAA appearance. The winner will play against the winner of Notre Dame-Wisconsin. Notre Dame will be making its 15 consecutive appearance, while Wisconsin, who is 19-2 in home NCAA Tournament matches overall, is making its 11th consecutive appearance. The winner also moves on to the Austin Regional. Missouri received possibly the hardest draw of all the Big 12 teams, as it was placed in a subregional that includes Santa Clara, who went to the Final Four last year, Sacramento State, and the number two seed overall Stanford. Missouri faces Santa Clara in their first round match-up, a team they lost to in four games earlier this season at the Texas Invitational. Stanford, which features Missouri native Erin Waller, and Sacramento State battle in the other first round match-up. It is the second time the Tigers will play in California this season, as they started the season in the Long Beach State Invitational, and for the second time in their NCAA Tournament history, first playing there in 2003, when they lost to host UC-Irvine. This is the first time the Tigers will play in Palo Alto. The winner of the subregional moves on to the Austin Regional as well, giving the Big 12 a possibility of having three of the four teams in the regional be from the Big Michael Wojtychiw September 25 Vander Kooi Named National and Big 12 Player of the Week The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) named Missouri senior OH Jessica Vander Kooi as its SportsImports/AVCA National Player of the Week it announced Monday evening. After winning the Big 12 Player of the Week honor earlier in the day for the second time this month, Vander Kooi, a native of Hinton, Iowa, becomes just the third Tiger to win the national weekly award. Vander Kooi led then-no. 22 Missouri to a 2-0 record last week, including the sweep of then-no. 5 Texas -- the Tigers first victory over a top-five ranked opponent. At Kansas State on Wednesday, Vander Kooi scored 27 kills on 55 attempts (.327) and added 19 digs to the MU effort. The Hinton, Iowa native tallied the most kills for a Tiger in a four-game match since 2002, and the fifth 20-kill match this season. Vander Kooi scored 19 points; recording 13 kills, five blocks and three service aces against Texas on Saturday. After rolling her ankle in game one, Vander Kooi committed only one hitting error in 32 attacks to record a.375 hitting percentage. In addition, Vander Kooi fielded 17 serve receptions without an error. On the week, Vander Kooi averaged 6.86 points, 5.71 kills while compiling a.345 hitting percentage. She also posted 3.86 digs and 1.00 blocks in seven games. In Big 12 matches, Vander Kooi currently ranks second in the conference in points per game (5.74), third in kills per game (4.65), and fifth in aces per game (0.47). The last Tiger to earn the AVCA National Player of the Week award was Nicole Wilson last year. Ironically, Vander Kooi s honor came on the same week in the year as Wilson s occurred last season. The New Crop To replace three Tigers that had a large impact on the team, Mizzou will have five freshman in 2006 season, three of which redshirted in Lei Wang (Shanghai, China) has positioned herself to take over as Missouri s new setter, replacing first-team All-American Lindsey Hunter (who now is on the USA National Team). Amanda Hantouli (Omaha, Neb.) has been impressive in spring and early fall workouts and will likely see some playing time in the replacement of Lisa Boyd. Megan Wilson (Lincoln, Neb.) has been equally impressive and will likely take on an all-around role on the Tiger side. True freshman Julianna Klein (Keota, Iowa) has shown her strength this fall, having delivered some shattering cross-court shots from the left side and raising some eyebrows with her jump serves. Brittney Herzog (Boonville, Mo.) has also shown a lot to the Tiger coaching staff at the MB position. Tatum Libre-o As a sophomore she won Big 12 Libero of the Year honors. This year, junior Tatum Ailes will be looking for more as an encore. Leading the conference a year ago with 4.12 digs per game, Ailes has found a knack to be at the right place at the right time. With amazing dives and accurate passes Ailes is not only a physical force for the Tigers, but also an emotional and vocal leader on the floor. In addition, her play in last year s NCAA Tournament played a vital role in the Tigers run to the Elite Eight as she wiped the floor averaging 5.00 dpg in the four matches. In the regional rounds alone, she scooped 26 against Hawaii and 22 against Tennessee. Remarking on 2005 We can t go without mentioning the greatest season in Tiger volleyball history (so far). In 2005, Mizzou reached the NCAA Tournament s Sweet Sixteen for the first time in school history, then beating Hawaii to reach its first-ever NCAA Regional Final. Making their sixth-consecutive NCAA Tournament, the Tigers went 7-4 against teams in the top 25, and took down four top-10 teams adding sweeps against then-no. 9 Tennessee and then-no. 9 Wisconsin. The Tigers had the winningest record in school history with a 25-5 mark. Mizzou hosted first-and-second rounds of the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight year, having the largest attended early rounds of the 16 sites. In addition, Mizzou ranked sixth in national attendance, attracting an average of over 2,600 fans a match. Reaching the NCAA Tournament for the sixthconsecutive season, the Tigers were selected to host first-and-second rounds for the second-consecutive year, achieving an overall No. 10 seed in the tournament. After defeating Missouri State in the first round, Mizzou rolled over Arkansas in a sweep to advance to the team s first regional in school history. At the Penn State Regional, the Tigers took perennial power Hawaii head-on in the round-of-16, regional semifinal, defeating UH in four games. In 2005, the Tigers accumulated a 25-5 record, the winningest in school history, and were a step away from the national semifinal. It was the Kreklows fifth 20-win season in their six at Mizzou, marking a overall record since Also in 2005, Wayne was named CVU.com s honorable mention National Coach of the Year, as the team surged to the national top-10 for the first time in school history, sweeping three top-10 teams along the way. Upon arrival, the Kreklow s wasted no time in putting their winning mark on a program that had not experienced success since the early 1980 s. In their first three years at Mizzou, 2000, 2001, and 2002 they recorded the program s first back-to-back-to-back 20-win seasons since Missouri posted the first postseason victory is school history by defeating Northwestern in the first round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament. In 2004, Missouri had the honor of hosting first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. Missouri has finished in the top six of the Big 12 Conference in each of the Kreklows six seasons leading the Tigers. In 2000, the Kreklows first season at MU, Missouri finished second in the Big 12 Conference after finishing ninth the previous year. For her efforts, Susan was named the 2000 Big 12 Coach of the Year by her peers. The Kreklows have made Mizzou Volleyball an exciting marketable entity, and the growth in attendance shows that, as Missouri ranked sixth nationally in attendance in 2005, averaging over 2,600 fans per competition. On October 5, 2005, 7,298 fans packed the Hearnes Center for the Tigers match against Nebraska. Both teams entered the contest undefeated in the national top-10. In 2004, the Tigers finished the season in the top 25 again, achieving a No. 24 post-season ranking. In 2005, their No. 21 preseason ranking was the season-low as the team never excited the top 25. The Tigers progressed in defeating two top-10 teams in sweeps to open the season and soon soared to the top 10 themselves, peaking at No. 7 in October. Their No. 8 final poll ranking in 2005 is the best in school history. Before the 2005 season, Wayne and Susan officially switched titles within the University system to allow for more family flexibility. While the official coaching records of both are affected, their coaching philosophy is one build on a co-op instead of a one-headed system. Before coming to Missouri, the Kreklows were co-head coaches of both the men s and women s volleyball teams at Columbia College. They enjoyed great success, taking their women s team to the NAIA National Tournament six times and winning consecutive national titles in 1998 (the first ever for Columbia) and The Cougars also won five regional championships and seven consecutive American Midwest Conference championships under their guidance. In 1998 and 1999, Columbia College achieved consecutive undefeated seasons with a combined record of The Cougars undefeated record included 78 consecutive wins at home and 227 consecutive game victories. In 1997 and 1998, the Kreklows shared NAIA/AVCA National Coach of the Year and Midwest Region Coach of the Year honors. 19 Vander Kooi takes control with serene approach By ANGELA BUSCH, Columbia Daily Tribune Published Tuesday, October 10, 2006 It was Dec. 4, 2004, and Jessica Vander Kooi was having an emotional meltdown during Missouri s volleyball match against Louisville in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The sophomore outside hitter was exasperated with herself, and Coach Wayne Kreklow could see her tears as she attempted to keep playing. The result was horrendous for the 2003 Big 12 freshman of the year. She finished with seven hitting errors, three service errors and just four kills on 23 attacks - unacceptable for the self-professed perfectionist. The competitiveness that had served Vander Kooi so well in high school was threatening to destroy her collegiate career. Kreklow never knew what would make her snap. If she shanked a pass or two, we were in danger of losing her emotionally for the whole match, he said. Fast forward to the present. The No. 15 Tigers (13-4, 7-1 Big 12) host No. 1 Nebraska (15-0, 7-0) at 6:30 tonight in the Hearnes Center. Vander Kooi is Missouri s undisputed leader. This season, she has been named the Big 12 player of the week twice and the national player of the week once. She leads Missouri in kills (4.3 per game) and points (5.29 per game). She is second in assists (0.82 per game), service aces (0.33 per game), digs (3.33 per game) and total blocks (1.18 per game). More important, she has learned to control her emotions. Now when I make a mistake, I don t dwell on it, she said. I just say, Shoot, and I keep playing. From the outside looking in, Vander Kooi s rise to the top of the collegiate volleyball ranks looks simple. She was recognized as a Fab 50 volleyball recruit coming out of Hinton High School in Iowa despite playing just two years of club volleyball. Growing up, she was more focused on basketball and was a McDonald s All-American nominee as a senior. At Missouri, she started every match as a freshman, was an All-Big 12 selection as a sophomore and was named to the A2 USA national volleyball team after her junior year. I knew it right away when I came to campus, she said. She has not cut anything out of her life since that freshman year. She has learned, though, that she can t always be perfect. She knows what she wants and what she s going to do, said teammate and fellow senior Nicole Wilson. But she s more easygoing now. She s not as hard on herself. Vander Kooi said she is less obsessive with her schoolwork, too. The three years since her freshman year have brought slow but steady change in Vander Kooi s ability to control her emotions on the court. There were fewer and fewer times when she seemed to be losing control, Kreklow said. Now, it almost never happens. Vander Kooi said it s hard to even remember exactly what would happen when she lost control. I haven t felt like that in a long time, she said. The changes came with lots of work from Vander Kooi herself. She doesn t like to rely on others to solve her problems, and she rarely talked to anyone about it, even her parents. Instead, she said she would practice staying calm on the court. You can practice the mental part of the game as much as the physical, she said. Vander Kooi s physical skills have always been there. It was just the mental component that needed to be finely honed in order for her to become, as Kreklow calls her, one of the great collegiate players. When I first saw her play, I saw a good athlete who had the potential to improve a lot, he said. I was drawn to her competitive spirit and intensity. That intensity or competitiveness hasn t faded, but Vander Kooi s perfectionism has waned. Kreklow s ideal of Vander Kooi s potential has come to fruition, and she has finally learned to stop picking on herself and have fun. I learned I had to give up certain things to get others, she said. And I ve definitely enjoyed myself more. For Vander Kooi, though, nothing about it was simple. She remembers the loneliness, frustration and overwhelming emotions of her freshman year. In high school, she was never really challenged in volleyball. No one had a chance to stop her hits. Suddenly, she was in the Big 12, and she was getting blocked. Plus, she missed her family. Vander Kooi is the oldest of three children, and she hated that she couldn t see her younger sister, Jamie, and younger brothers, Ricky and Jason, grow up. According to the 2000 census, just 808 people live in Hinton. Vander Kooi thrived under the support of her family and community. Then she came to Columbia, a city 100 times as big. She jumped right in as she always had: tackling a double major in international business and Spanish. She pushed herself to be perfect. One night that year, lonely and sad in her dorm room after a difficult day, Vander Kooi called her parents. You have to come down here right now, she said. They did, bringing along brother Jason, and it was the comfort Vander Kooi needed to keep going. 31 Berth ends suspense Missouri volleyball to play Santa Clara in opening round of NCAA Tournament By STEVEN MILLAR, Columbia Missourian Published Monday,, November 27, 2006 With their eyes glued to ESPNews on a big screen television on Sunday afternoon at the Clinton Club at Mizzou Arena, nervous Missouri volleyball players squirmed in their chairs and bit their nails. Sixty teams had been announced as part of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament s 64-team field. Missouri was not one of them. One by one, the Tigers watched as several teams considered to be on the bubble appeared on the bracket. First, Arizona State, then Missouri State, Arkansas, Colorado State and Notre Dame. Suddenly, Missouri s chances to receive an at-large bid, which seemed to be a lock before the selection show began, were in doubt. Then, it happened. Missouri flashed across the screen, and the players and coaches stopped holding their breath. The players jumped out of their seats, and high-fives and applause filled the room, which was dead silent a minute earlier. The Tigers had received their seventh straight bid to the tournament. Senior outside hitter Jessica Vander Kooi said she was worried her career might be over. I was a little nervous, I m not going to lie, she said. To be in the last bracket announced is hard, but I m just glad we re in. After the elation died down, the Tigers stepped back, realizing what they are up against. If Missouri was rewarded for its 17 wins, winning Big 12 Conference record, and high RPI, it was also punished for its 12 losses and sixth-place conference finish. The Tigers will head to Palo Alto, Calif., where they will face a brutal draw. Missouri opens with No. 23 Santa Clara at 6:30 p.m. Friday, and would likely face No. 2 national seed Stanford if it advances to the second round. The Cardinal will take on Big Sky Conference Champions Sacramento State at 9 p.m. Friday. The Palo Alto subregional is the only one to feature four teams in the RPI top 35. Traditional power Stanford is joined by a Santa Clara team that reached the Final Four in 2005, and a Missouri squad which advanced to the Elite Eight, make it seemingly the toughest of the 16 subregionals in the tournament. The three California schools are familiar with each other. They were in the Palo Alto subregional in 2005, when Santa Clara knocked off Sacramento State before stunning No. 5 national seed Stanford. But, though Missouri will be the only outsider, it will be prepared for its first-round match. Santa Clara beat the Tigers 3-1 on Sept. 8 in Austin, Texas. Missouri coach Wayne Kreklow said he is looking forward to getting another shot at the Broncos. I did feel it was a fairly competitive match, and I don t think we really played well, he said. If we go out and play the way we have the last couple weeks, I think we ve got a good shot. Libero Tatum Ailes has another reason to be excited for the trip west. Her family happened to be at the airport ready to return from a visit to Stanford, where Ailes younger sister Gabi has committed to play volleyball next year. When her family got the news that the Tigers were headed that way, travel plans were put on hold. It s neat that we re going out there, and I ll get to see where my little sister is playing next year, Ailes said. I just talked to my mom and she s in the airport right now, and she said You ve got to be kidding me, we re going to be out here for another week NCAA Regional Finalist Sixth in national attendance in 2005

2006 Missouri Volleyball - NCAA Tournament - First/Second Rounds Tigers await their NCAA playoff fate By STEVEN MILLAR, Columbia Missourian Published Sunday, November 26, 2006 Missouri volleyball is not just an overnight sensation. Last year, coach Wayne Kreklow took a Missouri program that had never advanced beyond the NCAA Tournament s second round to the Elite Eight. In the process of a 25-5 season, Kreklow said a buzz developed that brought new fans to Hearnes Center for volleyball matches. Friday night s 30-15, 30-28, win over Texas Tech wrapped up a regular season not nearly as successful. It was a season that failed to meet preseason expectations, including a No. 13 ranking, and was filled with ups and downs for a Tigers roster loaded with young players. But, while the national ranking has gone, the fans have not. According to a national attendance report, Missouri finished its home campaign sixth in the nation, drawing over 2,500 fans per match. Energetic crowds fired up the team, and a large, rowdy student section was on hand at nearly every match, drawing complaints from rattled opponents. Kreklow says that attendance has increased from last season, despite the team s struggles, which shows that volleyball, as a popular sport in mid-missouri, is here to stay. I think the last couple years have helped expose people to the game, he said. People are coming that haven t come before, they re seeing how fun it is. Hopefully, we ve created fans not of a particular group of people, but of the game. Hopefully, year in, year out, though, we might not always have a top-eight team in the country, we put a team on the court that s fun to watch. Missouri (17-12, 11-9 in the Big 12 Conference) is hoping for a chance to prove they also have staying power as a national contender and will find out today if they will be given an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament when the 64-team bracket is announced live on ESPNEWS at 2 p.m. In the past, a winning conference record in the powerful Big 12 has been enough to assure a team an at-large bid. Missouri is also receiving votes in the current AVCA Top 25 poll, and has a strong RPI and outof-conference strength of schedule, adding to the likelihood that the Tigers will be playing when the tournament begins next weekend. The Tigers will likely be on the road and not receive a top-16 national seed in the tournament, meaning they will enter regional play as an underdog. Missouri will also count on several inexperienced players who will be competing in their first postseason. But, outside hitter Jessica Vander Kooi said she thinks the team is prepared to play on the big stage. I think we are ready, she said. We ve played everywhere, we ve played in all kinds of environments. I think we ll be ready wherever we re sent to. While Vander Kooi and fellow seniors Nicole Wilson and Abbie Booth are focused on the team s future in postseason play, Friday night gave them a chance to reflect on the past. If the Missouri players were still caught up in senior night emotions when the match began, it sure didn t show. The Tigers played a brilliant Game 1, breaking a school record with a.625 hitting percentage in the game and dominating Texas Tech. Vander Kooi led the Tigers with 12 kills while Na Yang and Julianna Klein each added 11, and Tatum Ailes became Missouri s career leader in digs with 16 on the night to give her 1,388 as a Tiger. Philister Sang led the Red Raiders (12-17, 5-15) with 17 kills. As the three seniors left the court Friday night, they said the reality that they had most likely just played their last match at Hearnes Center hadn t sunk in yet. Every once in a while, it would pop in my head that this is my last game, but I told myself Get it out, get it out, Vander Kooi said. My dad was tearing up during the ceremony and I was like No, dad, you can t do this to me. I m trying not think of it, because I know the tears will come. I m just trying to take it all in. 30 The three seniors, who have been a huge part of putting Missouri volleyball on the map the past few seasons, were honored before the match. In an emotional ceremony, they were announced to the Hearnes Center crowd for the last time, with their parents at their sides. They were given flowers and other gifts by their teammates. And then, it was time to take on the Red Raiders. Wilson said it was hard for the seniors to keep their focus after the pregame festivities. (Texas) Tech had nothing to lose, she said. This was their last match. It s hard to keep in mind that they re not going to come out and roll over.

Missouri vs. Oklahoma Tigers can t close MU squanders four match points in the final game. By STEVEN MILLAR, Columbia Missourian Published Sunday, November 16, 2006 Missouri volleyball coach Wayne Kreklow often says it s his team s job to play hard, entertain fans and give them exciting volleyball to watch. If it does that, he says, fans will keep coming to matches whether the Tigers win or lose. Missouri libero Tatum Ailes had 29 digs and broke her own single-season Missouri record with 465. She was just pheonomenal, Kreklow said. She was all over. She was just all over, making some awesome plays, making some great plays. It gives us more second chance opportunities. A dig is like an offensive rebound in basketball, you get another chance to take a swing, the more you can dig, the more second chances you get, and hopefully you can put one away. Unfortunately for the Tigers Wednesday night, they just couldn t put one away. If Kreklow is right, the 2,169 fans at Hearnes Center on Wednesday night will all be back. No. 14 Oklahoma outlasted Missouri 30-25, 27-30, 32-30, 20-30, in what coaches and players alike said was one of the most thrilling matches they had ever been a part of. That was just a great collegiate volleyball game, you can t ask for anything more than that, Kreklow said. Well, I guess I could. I could ask to win it, rather than come up short, but that was just an unbelievable match. I thought we did a super job, we certainly had opportunities, but they d say the same thing. It was just an unbelievable volleyball match. Tigers middle blocker Nicole Wilson said she was drained after the match. That was definitely one of the most intense yet this season, Wilson said. It ranks right up there with Nebraska and the Elite Eight, and those games. I know I m exhausted physically and mentally. The grueling 2-hour, 32-minute match went back and forth all night. After the Tigers pulled even with a tight win in Game 2, they had a chance to go up 2-1. Missouri had three game points in Game 3, but couldn t finish Oklahoma off. The Sooners ralied from defecits of and for the win. After a Missouri win in Game 4, Game 5 was as intense as volleyball games come. The teams played to a tie at 3 before a 3-0 Missouri run put the Tigers up 6-3. Oklahoma responded with a 3-0 run to tie it at 6. Neither team led by more than two the rest of the way. The Tigers took leads of 14-12, 15-14, and and had four match points, but again failed to put the Sooners away. After Oklahoma took a lead, Missouri s middle blocker Nicole Wilson hit a kill attempt wide, giving Oklahoma the victory. I saw the hole, Wilson said about the final shot. I just tried to do too much with it. I tried to make the best shot, I tried to swing with it, I was doing all I can with the ball, and it just happened to go out. It s just one of those things where you bounce back tomorrow. The match was not without controversy. Both Kreklow and Oklahoma coach Santiago Restrepo protested loudly after several close calls, and Kreklow had to hold himself back after the match. I d like to (comment on the officiating), he said. But, I won t. Na Yang led Missouri (15-10, 9-8 in the Big 12 Conference) with 22 kills and 13 digs and Lei Wang had a career-high 75 assists, the third-highest match total at the school. Joanna Schmitt led Oklahoma (23-5, 14-3) with 26 kills as the Sooners continued their improbable success this season after finishing last year The Tigers left the court with their heads held high after the match, focusing on the positives. Oklahoma swept Missouri easily in Norman, Okla., earlier in the year, and Wilson said that tonight showed that the Tigers were bouncing back at the right time NCAA Regional Finalist Sixth in national attendance in 2005

2006 Missouri Volleyball - NCAA Tournament - First/Second Rounds Wilson sisters Sisters savor time together As final game nears, Nicole and Megan Wilson say they re glad they got to be teammates at MU By STEVEN MILLAR, Columbia Missourian Published Wednesday, November 9, 2006 Nicole Wilson gets emotional when she thinks about what the next few weeks will bring. She will end her career on Missouri s volleyball team, but most importantly, it will be her last chance to take the court at Hearnes Center with her younger sister Megan by her side. It s hard, I don t like to think about it, she said through tears Wednesday after practice at Hearnes Center. It s something special that most people don t get to do. My senior year, my last competitive season at this level, where I probably won t ever get to do it again, it means a lot to have her here. It s just really special. Nicole, a senior middle blocker, and Megan, a redshirt freshman who has played several positions for the Tigers this year, have always competed. They were teammates on volleyball, basketball, and soccer teams at Lincoln Christian High School in Lincoln, Neb. They have many memories, some fond, some not so fond, of doing battle on the basketball court at Lincoln Christian. Although she was two years younger, Megan, at 6-foot-2, was the only other tall girl on the court, and would often be given the task of trying to guard her 6-foot-4 older sister. Megan often had some interesting ways to try to stop Nicole. She would sometimes lean on me, and push her arm in harder, Nicole said. Sometimes, she would come down purposely with her elbows right at my nose level. Little things that most people wouldn t think to do, or she wouldn t think to do to someone else. She s pushing her fingers in, digging them in at pressure points, or she s pinching the back of my arms. Dirty play, perhaps, but Nicole admits it wasn t one-sided. I d beat her up pretty good, she said. And there were so many little things that no one else would know, little things I could say, that I knew would irritate her, frustrate her. We d get frustrated with each other, but in the end, we d go home and we both knew it was just our competitive natures. Nicole laughs at the memories. Megan, however, said she doesn t find all of it humorous. It may have been funny to you, but not to me, she said. I d go home crying when Nicole would pick on me like that. The sisters smile, though, remembering their parents reactions after some of those intense practices. She d go home upset, and my mom would have to deal with her being upset, Nicole said. And I d be like, You re just being a baby about it, get tough, and my mom would be like Stop it Nicole, and then my dad would get into it and he d say Megan, you need to toughen up. He d take my side sometimes. My mom would be on her side. My mom would be like Be nice to Megan, just back off, and my dad would be like, Go get her. I want to beat her up, Nicole said. She knows it s a tough love. It s me telling her Get tougher, I m going to beat on you because I know you have potential to be something, and do something, and I want to see you succeed, and I m going to push you until you get it done. Megan laughs, saying she hasn t always realized those were her sister s intentions. Yeah, now I know that, she said. Megan said she realizes that people will compare her to her older sister the next three years. After all, that is what they ve done her whole life. But, Megan says that her and Nicole are entirely different athletes, playing different positions with different styles. The comparisons, she says, are simply a motivator. Everyone s like Nicole did this, why can t you? she said. I feel pressure from other people, and I guess that s probably why I ve gotten where I am today. I m always having to try to keep up and outdo her in some ways. Megan said limited playing time has frustrated her this year, but Nicole has always been there to help her keep her head up. She s taught me, basically, to keep fighting, she said. To keep going. This year has been tough, because I ve been in and out, sometimes playing, sometimes not. That bothers me so much, but she s always like I went through the same thing, and to see where she is now, it shows me that day in, day out, you just got to keep going. Although Nicole s career as a Missouri Tiger is coming to an end, she says she is eager to follow the team the next three years. She ll watch her younger sister try to make use of all the things she has taught her, hoping she has helped prepare her for success. For now, though, there are still a few more weeks to make memories. A few more weeks of moments that Nicole says will always be special. Twenty years down the road, we ll be sitting with our kids, she said. And we ll be like Do you remember when this happened? 32 Yeah, Megan said. And then my dad would tell me how to get her back. The sisters agree that even with the fights, the arguments and the tears, playing sports together has brought them closer. Because, she knows that I m not doing it in a way that I hate her, and

Missouri vs. Colorado Missouri volleyball team back on winning track By ANGELA BUSCH, Columbia Daily Tribune Published Sunday, November 5, 2006 Missouri attendance Big crowds invigorate volleyball at Missouri By STEVEN MILLAR, Columbia Missourian Published Friday, November 3, 2006 For two games last night against Colorado at the Hearnes Center, the Missouri volleyball team looked like the Tigers of three weeks ago, who were ranked 12th in the country. Missouri dominated the first two games of last night s match, gave up the third and squeaked by in the fourth for a four-game victory (30-23, 30-17, 28-30, 30-28). It was No. 21 Missouri s first win since Oct. 21. Especially in Games 1 and 2, we looked more like our old selves again, Coach Wayne Kreklow said. We were finally playing loose. The biggest indication of that might have been setter Lei Wang, who picked up 64 assists in the match. Lei, who has struggled in recent matches, seemed much more confident running Missouri s offense last night. Several times, she matched up her hitters with a single blocker or no block at all. Kreklow said Lei did appear more nervous in the third and fourth games, when she wasn t getting as many quality passes off serve-receive. It s all so intertwined, Kreklow said, explaining that Missouri s offense can t run without a good pass, set and hit, right in a row -something that has been hard to come by in recent matches. Passing struggles in Game 3 resulted in 10 Missouri hitting errors, after just seven in Games 1 and 2 combined. Another result of the more-sluggish Tiger offense: 5½ Colorado blocks, after three total in Games 1 and 2. Missouri s hitters weren t getting so many open looks - senior Jessica Vander Kooi started seeing three blockers each time she went up for an attack. After Game 3 ended with a tough, close line call that favored Colorado, Missouri seemed frustrated but focused, contrasting the outright dejection the Tigers displayed in Wednesday s loss to Iowa State. That focus paid off in the fourth game, when Kreklow said Missouri s seniors stepped up and took control. Middle blocker Nicole Wilson had seven kills in that game alone, giving the senior 17 in the match, including two big swings to give Missouri momentum near the end of the match. Senior defensive specialist Abbie Booth served three in a row, including an ace, to take Missouri from losing to winning in Game 4. Kreklow said Booth and libero Tatum Ailes took charge in the back row late in the match, taking some pressure off Lei. Then Lei doesn t have to worry about staying back; it helps the offense run better, he said. Vander Kooi led all players with 21 kills and added a team-high 15 digs. Na Yang (14), Julianna Klein (11) and Amanda Hantouli (10) followed Vander Kooi and Wilson to give the Tigers five players with doubledigit kills. Amber Sutherland had 20 kills and 18 digs for Colorado. Last night s win moves Missouri (15-9, 9-6) up a spot to fifth place in the Big 12. The Buffaloes (13-9, 9-6) move down a spot to sixth. The Tigers added a player to their roster last night: defensive specialist Kate Foust. The redshirt freshman joined the squad last week as a walkon. She formerly competed for Missouri s club volleyball team. Foust will replace junior Jilly Jaksich, a defensive specialist who left the team in late September because of academic concerns. Missouri is still a player short; middle blocker Melissa Allbery quit the team on Sept. 8 after struggling with a nagging knee injury NCAA Regional Finalist Sixth in national attendance in 2005 Throughout the 2006 season, fans of the Missouri volleyball team have energized the Tigers and rattled opponents, turning Hearnes Center into one of the most intimidating places in the country to play. The crowds, especially the VolleyZou student group, have affected opponents enough to draw complaints, which eventually forced Missouri coach Wayne Kreklow to eliminate some of the student seating on Hearnes Center floor. Junior libero Tatum Ailes said she felt the crowd had not gotten out of line the way some opponents had suggested. They help us a lot, but I don t feel like they harass people like people are saying they do, she said. Any time you go on the road, the fans are going to boo you. You want your fans to back you up; that s why you have a crowd, that s why you play at home. When the No. 21 Tigers take the court against Colorado at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Hearnes Center, they will contune to look for help from their fans. In the latest NCAA attendance figures, released on Monday, Missouri is fifth in the country in attendance, with an average crowd of 2,917 fans. Only tradition-rich Hawaii, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Minnesota have brought in larger crowds than the Tigers. The 6,035 fans who packed Hearnes Center for Missouri s showdown with No. 1 Nebraska on Oct. 11 represented the third-largest crowd for a Missouri volleyball game. And two other matches: the Kansas State match Oct. 21 (attendance of 3.221) and the Kansas match Oct. 4 (attendance of 3,031) also rank among the top-10 crowds. And, despite recent struggles, Missouri is even on pace to draw more fans than last season, when a record 25-5 campaign energized Tiger faithful and an average of 2,672 fans attended matches. Those numbers are up 83 percent from the 2004 average of 1,460. Things have come a long way since 1999, when average attendance was just 334. Missouri coach Wayne Kreklow said a lot of things have come together in order for the popularity of volleyball at Missouri to increase so dramatically. The people in the community have gotten involved, the teams have performed well, and (Missouri volleyball director of operations) Mike Jackson has worked hard with the VolleyZou group, he said. And, I m not even convinced it s just about winning. It is about entertainment. People are coming because they want to be entertained, they want to have fun, and they want to see people having fun. Missouri has played well in front of its home fans this season. It is 6-2 in Columbia with three home games left. The Tigers will need the crowd to make a difference Saturday. Missouri (14-9, 8-6 in the Big 12 Conference) has lost five of its past six matches, with four of those losses coming on the road. The Tigers lost to the Buffaloes (13-8, 9-5) earlier in the season in Boulder, Colo. The Tigers have fallen to sixth place in the Big 12, but can pull into a tie with fourth-place Colorado with a win Saturday. A loss, on the other hand, could spell disaster for Missouri. The Tigers have a tough schedule down the stretch, with their next two matches against No. 8 Texas and No. 17 Oklahoma, and a few more losses could potentially knock them out of NCAA Tournament contention. With such a huge match to be played, the Tigers will be thrilled to be playing it in front of their home fans. I love playing here now, Ailes said. Our crowd is so awesome. The past two years, they ve just become a huge force for us and help against the other team. 33

2006 Missouri Volleyball - NCAA Tournament - First/Second Rounds Texas at Missouri Tigers spring surprising sweep of No. 5 Texas By ANGELA BUSCH, Columbia Daily Tribune Published Sunday, September 24, 2006 Just two hours after the Missouri football team improved to 4-0, the magic transferred from Faurot Field to the Hearnes Center. The 22nd-ranked Missouri volleyball team dispatched No. 5 Texas in an improbable three-game sweep, winning 30-23, 30-23, in front of 2,477 fans. Texas usually dominant front line, which averages 6-foot- 4, couldn t contain the Tigers, who haven t looked this good since last season. The Longhorns are tied with No. 1 Nebraska and No. 23 Pepperdine for the tallest team in the Top 25. But none of that mattered last night, as the Tigers outblocked the Longhorns It s not about how tall you are. It s about what kind of athlete you are, Missouri middle blocker Brittney Herzog said after the game. Herzog should know. The 6-foot freshman from Boonville had three blocks - pretty impressive for a player Coach Wayne Kreklow planned to redshirt. That changed when junior middle blocker Melissa Allbery quit the team Sept. 8. Herzog s redshirt came off the next match, and she has been impressive since. She also had four kills and two digs against Texas (8-3, 3-1 Big 12). Oh man, I had no idea it would be like this, Herzog said after the match, taking time out to sign autographs and accept congratulations from excited fans. Missouri (9-4, 3-1) won the first point of each game, and the lead changed only four times throughout the entire match. As the Tigers continued to put on the pressure with blocking and defense, Texas just looked more and more frustrated. Twice the Longhorns were called for being out of rotation before the serve, and several times they looked confused as to where they should be on the court. They also had seven service errors, 24 hitting errors and a.154 attack percentage. Missouri s fans seemed to win the battle to rattle the Longhorns, who have three freshmen and two sophomores in their regular rotation. The Tigers are young, as well, with two true freshmen and two redshirt freshmen in the lineup. Missouri has shown its youth at times this season, but not last night. Good communication was evident early in the game, as defensive specialist Abbie Booth told Na Yang to hit the back corner on her outside hits after Na was dug when she went cross-court. Sure enough, Na took Booth s advice on the next swing for a kill. Na finished with 17 kills to lead all players. She added seven digs. After summer knee surgery, she has struggled to get back to her 2005 form. Plus, she has had to learn to play back row, a spot she never played last season. I have been pushing through a tough time these last three months, she said. Tonight, I just focused on every ball. Wilson finished with eight block assists and 11 kills with just three errors. The entire Missouri team had just 12 errors on the night and none in Game 3. It was the first error-free game in MU volleyball history. Steady team leader Jessica Vander Kooi, who twisted her ankle in Game 1 but refused to be taken out, had just one error with her 13 kills, eight digs, four block assists and three service aces. Her aces all came before her ankle injury, after which she did not jump-serve. As the match drew to a close, the Missouri crowd started a cheer of Overrated, directed at Texas. They just as easily could have been chanting Underrated at their own team. 34 Texas big hitters looked like they d be tough to stop early. The Longhorns took a 14-9 lead in the first game. That was their largest lead of the match. Missouri figured out how to block freshmen Destinee Hooker (6-4) and Ashley Engle (6-3), both of whom were on the Texas Invitational All-Tournament Team. Engle was the third-ranked recruit in the 2006 class by Prepvolleyball.com. Hooker is the reigning NCAA high jump champion. Missouri middle blockers Herzog and Nicole Wilson played more efficiently. Hooker and Engle combined for 10 hitting errors. Herzog and Wilson had five.
