BCS rankings also are being released and those critical rankings show Oregon and Washington ranked about the same as in the media and coaches' polls, but OREGON STATE is several slots higher with a No. 11 ranking in the BCS. The Pac-10's non-conference record stands at 23-7 (.767) overall and 22-7 (.759) vs. Division IA opponents. Of the Pac- 10's seven losses, four have come to teams ranked in the Top 25. 4 pac-10 football - 10/29/00 page 4 SERIES NOTES FOR THE GAMES OF NOV. 4: ARIZONA (5-3) at WASHINGTON (7-1) - 12:30 PST/1:30 MST- ABC - The Series: Washington and Arizona have met 16 times with the Huskies holding a series lead of UW has won four of the last five and six of the last eight. The Wildcats, however, won the last meeting at Husky Stadium with a victory in Last Year: Washington and Arizona met late in the season at Tucson and the Huskies used ball control to grind out a win in an evenly played game. UW was helped by playing turnover-free ball while intercepting three UA passes, one of which was returned for a TD by CB Anthony Vontoure. Washington QB Marques Tuiasosopo passed for two scores and led the Huskies on a 17-play, 9-minute fourth-quarter 80-yard scoring drive that effectively put the game away. Wildcat QB Ortege Jenkins passed for one TD and ran for another. OREGON STATE (7-1) at CALIFORNIA (3-5) - 12:30 PST - The Series: California and Oregon State have met 52 times dating to 1905 with the Golden Bears leading the series It has been a series of streaks the last 25 years. OSU's victory last year was preceded by six straight Cal wins, which followed five straight OSU wins, which followed six straight Cal wins. The Bears have won three in a row at Berkeley with the last Beaver win at Strawberry Canyon coming in 1989 (25-14).... Last Year: Oregon State and California met at Corvallis and the Beavers clinched their first winning season since 1970 with a 17-7 victory. It was a matchup of the league's top two defenses and played according to form, as illustrated by the fact that neither team could muster so much as a first down in the first quarter. The game settled into a match of defense, punting and field position and the Golden Bears entered the fourth quarter with a baseball-score 7-2 lead by virtue of an 83-yard TD pass by QB Kyle Boller. The Beavers took over the lead on a 41-yard scoring strike by QB Jonathan Smith and nailed down the win when LB Tevita Moala picked up a fumble and raced 24 yards for a TD. To show the defensive nature of the game, the teams combined for 26 punts and were a combined 2-of-33 on thirddown conversion attempts. OSU linebacker James Allen was named Pac-10 defensive player of the week and Beaver P Mike Fessler picked up the special teams award for averaging 42.4 yards on 14 punts. Offensively, OSU TB Ken Simonton was his usual reliable self in rushing 31 times for 134 yards. OREGON (7-1) at WASHINGTON STATE (3-5) - 2:00 PST - The Series: Oregon and Washington State are old Pacific Northwest rivals that have met 77 times dating back to And the series could not be any more even as the Ducks and the Cougars are tied at The teams also have split WSU home games UO has won the last two, but the teams have split the last four games overall and the last four played at Pullman.... Last Year: Oregon and Washington State met at Eugene and the Ducks pounded the Cougars to post their 100th all-time win at Autzen Stadium. QB Joey Harrington made his starting debut for the Ducks a successful one as he passed for three TDs and ran for another. The UO offense had 487 yards total offense--228 rushing, 259 passing--without a turnover and the Duck defense limited WSU to 30 yards rushing. STANFORD (3-5) at UCLA (5-3) - 3:30 PST - FOX Syndication - The Series: UCLA and Stanford have met 70 times dating back to 1925 and uninterrupted since The Bruins lead the series overall, at home and 5-4 in the Rose Bowl. UCLA has won five of the last seven overall, but the teams have split the last four games at the Rose Bowl. The last three games between the teams at the Rose Bowl have been decided by a total of six points.... Last Year: Stanford and UCLA met at Palo Alto in a game between the defending and future Conference champions. The Stanford offense had scored 104 points in the previous two games and showed no signs of slowing down in a win against UCLA, which snapped the Bruins' 15-game Pac-10 winning streak. The Cardinal offense rang up 672 yards in total offense, including 465 yards passing. Stanford backup QB Joe Borchard came on early in the second quarter after starter Todd Husak went out with bruised ribs and torched the Bruins for 324 yards and five TD passes, including a Pac-10-record 98-yard scoring play. For the Bruins, TB DeShaun Foster rushed for 100 yards and two TDs on 19 carries and Lovell Houston returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown.

5 pac-10 football - 10/29/00 page 5 MORE SERIES NOTES FOR GAMES OF NOV. 4: USC (3-5) at ARIZONA STATE (5-3) - 7:00 MST/6:00 PST - The Series: Arizona State and USC have met 16 times and the Sun Devils are the only Pac-10 team to hold a series edge on the Trojans leading 9-7. ASU holds a slim 5-4 lead in games played at Tempe. Arizona State has won three of the last four overall, including the last two at Sun Devil Stadium.... Devil coach Bruce Snyder was offensive coordinator at USC in Last Year: Arizona State and USC met at Los Angeles with the Sun Devils taking away a victory. ASU controlled the ball with 213 yards rushing and the Devil defense picked off three Trojan passes. SC pulled within three points of the lead in the fourth quarter when DT Ennis Davis intercepted a pass and rumbled 30 yards for a TD, but ASU allowed no more and hung in for the win. Sun Devil TE Todd Heap pulled in seven receptions for 100 yards and one score. BILETNIKOFF SEMI-FINALIST: UCLA FL Freddie Mitchell has been selected as one of 10 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award which is presented to the nation's top receiver. BOMBS AWAY: QBs Joey Harrington of Oregon and Jeff Krohn of Arizona State combined for 866 yards passing and 11 TDs in the Ducks' double-overtime win. Harrington passed for 434 yards and six TDs, Krohn responded with 432 yards and five scores. The passing performances are the 19th and 20th best single-game passing marks in Conference history.

6 pac-10 football - 10/29/00 page 6 ARIZONA makes if final road trip of the season (to Washington) before ending up with two at home (Oregon State, Arizona State).... Freshman CB Michael Jolivette's Pac-10-leading five interceptions equals Arizona's team total last year.... Arizona "Cactus Curtain" defense has allowed just four rushing TDs in eight games and those came in just two games--ucla and Ohio State. Wildcats lead the Pac-10 and are sixth nationally in rushing defense at 76.8 yards per game.... Arizona also has forced a Pac-10-leading 28 turnovers--14 fumbles and 14 INTs.... QB Jeff Krohn's 432 yard passing performance against Washington last week is the 20th-best single-game performance in Conference history and the second-best game ever by a freshman quarterback (469, Jonathan Smith, OSU vs. UW in 1998). ARIZONA STATE plays its final home game this week before finishing on the road at Stanford and Arizona.... Sun Devils have scored first in every game this year. Devils have outscored opponents in the first quarter.... However, six of ASU's eight games have been decided by a touchdown or less.... ASU was only Pac-10 team never to have lost a game in overtime (3-0) prior to falling to Oregon in double-ot last week.... It was first loss as starting QB for freshman Jeff Krohn, who had been 4-0 as a starter. It was hardly Krohn's doing as he passed for 432 yards and five TDs.... Oregon snapped a sixgame string during which ASU had not allowed a first-quarter touchdown.... Against Oregon, Sun Devils piled up 667 yards total offense vs. Duck defense ranked No. 10 in the nation and tops in the Pac- 10 entering game.... ASU QBs have tossed 18 TD passes this year, surpassing the 14 thrown all last year. CALIFORNIA won, 28-16, at USC last week for the Golden Bears' third straight win overall against the Trojans and third straight at Los Angeles.... Cal defense racked up seven QB sacks, second-best performance in the Pac-10 this year (Oregon had eight vs. Arizona). DE Andre Carter was the leader with 2.5 for minus-32 yards. Carter had four tackles for losses.... CB Jemeel Powell returned four punts for 138 yards vs. USC, including an 83-yard fourth-quarter TD return that sealed the win. That's the longest punt return in the Pac-10 this year and the 138 yards is most punt return yards in a game this season. Powell also had a fourth-quarter interception in the game.... The Bears passed only 12 times at USC, but two went for TDs by QB Kyle Boller.... P Nick Harris continues his inexorable march toward the NCAA record for career punting yardage. He is up to 12,797 yards and needs just 151 yards to break the record (12,947, Cameron Young, TCU, ). OREGON has the longest current overall winning streak among Pac-10 teams at six straight and the longest Conference game winning streak at 10 in a row. UO also has won four straight Conference road games. Ducks have won 13 of their last 14 games overall.... Ducks are off to their best start since 1959 (8-1) and have won their first five Conference games for the first time since Ducks are only team to rank in the top three in the Pac-10 in the four major offensive stat categories.... UO never led in regulation in double-overtime win at Arizona State last week. Prior to ASU, Ducks had only been behind in two games all year.... Oregon lost time of possession battle at ASU for the first time all season, albeit by just 36 seconds.... QB Joey Harrington is 11-1 as Oregon's starter.... Win at Arizona State assures Oregon of its seventh straight winning season, longest such string among Pac-10 teams.... Oregon No. 7 ranking in the AP poll equals its highest ranking ever. OREGON STATE junior TB Ken Simonton has become just the sixth player in Pac-10 history to rush for 1,000 yards in three seasons and the first to do it as a freshman, sophomore and junior. He leads the Pac-10 and is fifth nationally in rushing at yards per game. Simonton also leads the Pac-10 in allpurpose yardage, despite having only 8 yards receiving and no kick return yardage, and scoring with 13 TD.... PK Ryan Cesca as connected on seven straight field goal attempts. He is 8-9 on the season and a perfect on PATs in his career.... Beavers are 7-1 for the first time since 1964, the last time OSU went to the Rose Bowl.... Win against WSU last week was Beavs' eighth in a row at home record should ensure OSU a second straight bowl appearance for the first time in school history.... QB Jonathan Smith has passed for 11 TDs with just two interceptions over the last four games.... Beavers lead the Pac-10 in turnover margin (+11).

7 pac-10 football - 10/29/00 page 7 MORE PAC-10 NOTES: STANFORD recovered three onside kicks in the fourth quarter in attempted comeback against Washington that fell just short last week.... Cardinal were the first team all year to outscore the Huskies in the fourth quarter.... WR DeRonnie Pitts has increased his career reception total to 210, good for fourth on the Pac-10 career reception list, and his career receiving yardage total to 2,841, good for fifth on the Pac-10 career chart. UCLA snapped an eight-game road losing streak dating back to 1998 with win at Arizona last week.... FL Freddie Mitchell is second in the nation in receiving yards with yards per game.... P Nate Fikse is leading the Pac-10 in punting at 43.8 yards per boot, almost three yards per kick more than his nearest competitor.... UCLA picked off four Arizona passes last week, most picks in a game by a Pac-10 team this year. Final pick came with 10 seconds left in game to thwart final Wildcat drive. CB Ricky Manning had two of the INTs. USC TB Sultan McCullough has had three straight 100-yard rushing days. In those three games he has run for 404 yards on 48 carries, an 8.4-yard average. He is on pace for 1,236 yards, which would be the most at Troy since OLB Markus Steele leads the Pac-10 in tackles for loss with 17 for minus-48 yards. Running mate MLB Zeke Moreno is not far behind at 12 for minus-44 to make them the top onetwo combination in the league in that category. WASHINGTON was outscored in the fourth quarter for the first time all year at Stanford last week, but Huskies are still doubling up opponents in the fourth UW is second in the Conference in rushing at yards per game even though they have nobody ranked among the Pac-10's to 10 rushers. Plus Washington's 20 rushing TDs leads the Pac Six of Washington's eight games have been decided by a touchdown or less with the Huskies winning five of those six. UW has trailed at some point in six of its seven wins. WASHINGTON STATE has seen outcome of game decided by seven points or less in five of its last six games.... QB Jason Gesser leads Pac-10 in passing (241.5 yards per game) and pass efficiency (136.9). Cougars' 54.3% completion percentage is best in Pac-10 and 18 touchdown passes ties Arizona State and Oregon for the Conference lead.... Cougars are a remarkable 8-11 (72.7%) on fourth-down conversion attempts. QUOTABLE: Oregon offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford on UO QB Joey Harrington, who is 11-1 as the Ducks' starter: "He's a winner. Even when his stats aren't pretty, he's a competitor and he finds a way to win. That's definitely his best attribute--he wins." Oregon coach Mike Bellotti on the Ducks' No. 7 poll rating, which equals Oregon's highest ever AP ranking: "It's great for the fans, alumni, administration and players' parents, but we have to earn it every week."
