Thompson s approach to developing a complete team was on display in his first season in charge. The Bulldogs ranked seventh in FCS in pass defense, led by SoCon interception champion Dee Delaney, and eighth in the country in total defense, improving by more than 50 yards from the previous season to allow only yards per game. The Bulldogs also ranked first in the Southern Conference with only 30 touchdowns allowed in 12 games, an average of 2.5 per game. Special teams played a crucial role in The Citadel s success with a dangerous return game, led by SoCon punt return champion DeAndre Schoultz, clutch kicking and one of the best coverage units in the conference. Thompson served as the Bulldogs offensive coordinator and quarterbacks/b-backs coach for his first two seasons in Charleston.
