(photo courtesy Joyce Bishop) Walter Payton Award Devlin Hodges, Samford Samford redshirt senior quarterback Devlin Hodges won the Walter Payton Award as the FCS Offensive Player of the Year. Hodges threw for a SoCon-record 4,283 yards this season, becoming the FCS career leader in passing yardage with 14,584. He led the nation this season in total passing yards, passing yards per game (389.4) and total offense per game (417.8). He set a SoCon record with 4,596 yards of total offense and had six games in which he threw for 400 yards or more. Hodges became the SoCon s seventh winner of the award but the first since Appalachian State s Armanti Edwards won his second straight in SOCON INDIVIDUAL AWARD WINNERS (ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS ON PAGE 5) Two Southern Conference teams finished the year in the national rankings. Wofford wrapped up the year ranked No. 12 by the AFCA and No. 13 by STATS FCS, while ETSU is No. 21 by the coaches and No. 22 by STATS. Furman and Samford received votes in the final STATS poll. Two SoCon teams earned bids in the FCS playoffs this season. Automatic qualifier Wofford won its firstround game against Elon on Nov. 24, 19-7, before falling to No. 4 seed Kennesaw State on Dec. 1, ETSU, making its second playoff appearance and first since 1996, fell at Jacksonville State in a firstround game on Nov. 24. The SoCon put multiple teams in the field for the fourth straight season and the 31st time in the last 37 seasons. The league has gone (.592) all-time in the FCS playoffs, winning eight national titles. ETSU, Furman and Wofford shared the SoCon title with identical 6-2 league records. The title was ETSU s first, the six for the Wofford and the league-record 14th for Furman. Eighteen SoCon student-athletes earned All-America honors this season (see pages 8-9). Walter Payton Award winner and FCS ADA Offensive Player of the Year Devlin Hodges of Samford led the way with selections from eight different organizations, while Chattanooga defensive lineman Isaiah Mack earned All-America honors from seven and ETSU offensive lineman Matt Pyke and Samford wide receiver Kelvin McKnight earned the distinction from six apiece. Those four were consensus All-Americans, earning the honor from the AFCA, the Associated Press and STATS, with Pyke and Mack earning first-team honors from all three. Furman bandit linebacker Adrian Hope was named the national Defensive Freshman of the Year by Phil Steele Magazine when it named its Freshman All-America teams, while Citadel punter Matthew Campbell was named the Special Teams Freshman of the Year by the organization. VMI sophomore defensive back AJ Smith was named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America Division I football second team, as selected by CoSIDA. Offensive Player of the Year Devlin Hodges, Samford Defensive Player of the Year Isaiah Mack, Chattanooga Freshman of the Year Quay Holmes, ETSU Jacobs Blocking Award Matt Pyke, ETSU Coach of the Year Randy Sanders, ETSU SOCON STATS NCAA STATS SOCON MEDIA GUIDE ETSU and Wofford were both under the direction of new head coaches in Randy Sanders led the Bucs to an 8-4 record, a national ranking and a share of the league title en route to earning SoCon Coach of the Year honors. He was also a finalist for the STATS Eddie Robinson Award, which honors the national coach of the year. Wofford coach Josh Conklin led the Terriers to a 9-4 mark and a share of the league title. Wofford was nationally ranked all season, peaking at No. 4. Rusty Wright was hired to lead the Chattanooga program after Tom Arth departed for Akron in December. Wright, who spent the last two seasons on staff at Georgia State, was a four-year letterwinner for the Mocs from and was an assistant at his alma mater from and again from Among Wright s hires for his staff is tight ends coach Jacob Huesman, who was a three-time SoCon Offensive Player of the Year for the Mocs at quarterback. Seven of the league s nine teams finished SoCon play with records of.500 or better. Southern Conference teams signed a combined 80 student-athletes during the early signing period.
