An Honorable Mention All-American and first-team All-MAC selection, Arthur holds school records for receptions in a game (15), season (86), and career (184); and receiving yards in a game (223) and career (2,653). In 2005, Arthur was a member of the Zips squad that qualified for the first Division I bowl game in school history. In the Motor City Bowl, Arthur set the record for most receiving yards with a 181-yard performance. AKRON-MIAMI: THE SERIES Saturday s game is the 28th meeting between Akron and Miami in series history, which began in The RedHawks lead, Last fall in their final road game of the regular season, the Akron Zips dropped a decision at Miami (Ohio) in Mid-American Conference action on a Tuesday night at Yager Stadium. Making his first start at quarterback, redshirt freshman Kato Nelson went 19-of-38 for 218 yards and a touchdown. Junior WR Kwadarrius Smith led the receivers with a career-high six receptions for 69 yards. Senior RB Manny Morgan was the top rusher with 41 yards on 10 carries. Defensively, sophomore CB Alvin Davis led Akron with nine tackles. In 2016 at InfoCision Stadium on Homecoming weekend, the Akron alumni witnessed the Zips dominating performance against Miami for a win to remain undefeated in Mid-American Conference play. It was the Zips sixth consecutive conference win, and Akron s longest league winning streak since joining the MAC in Akron s starting QB junior Tra Von Chapman had a career day in passing completions (15), attempts (29), and touchdowns (3) while passing for 174 yards. He also found the endzone on a 70-yard run for the Zips first touchdown. He led the team with a career-high 80 yards on the ground on 10 carries. Senior WR JoJo Natson led the Zips in receiving, scoring two touchdowns on seven catches for 81 yards, while junior WR Austin Wolf followed with one reception for 24 yards and a touchdown. The Zips defense managed two sacks, five tackles for loss, two interceptions, and a fumble recovery. Sophomore LB Ulysees Gilbert led the squad with nine take downs and one for loss. Akron racked up 432 yards of total offense, including 211 yards on the ground. Senior RB Conor Hundley, playing before a huge hometown crowd, rushed for 110 yards and a career-high three touchdowns. QB Thomas Woodson went 13-of-28 for 221 yards. WR Imani Davis led the receiving corps with seven catches for 64 yards, while WR Jerome Lane had four receptions for 83 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, LB Jatavis Brown had a game-high 11 tackles, including seven solo stops, 4.5 TFL for a loss of 25 yards, two sacks, an interceptions, and a forced fumble. In the teams last meeting at InfoCision Stadium on Oct. 11, 2014, the Zips found the end zone twice in the second half while posting nine sacks on defense to down the Miami RedHawks, The win was the third-straight-overall for Akron and the fifth-straight win in league play dating back to the 2013 season. It was a closely fought battle throughout as the Akron (2-1) defense gave the Iowa State (1-2) offense trouble all game. Iowa State led by a touchdown at the break (17-10), and added three second-half field goals for their first win of the season. Iowa State outscored Akron 9-3 in the final 30 minutes of play. 5

Both plays occurred in the second half. Sophomore QB Kato Nelson led the Akron offense with 153 yards passing and 56 yards on the ground. He completed 12-of-28 passes for one touchdown and a long of 29 yards. His longest rushing effort went for 22 yards. Senior RB Van Edwards, Jr., carried the ball 12 times for the Zips, gaining 23 yards, while sophomore WR Nate Stewart (Bethlehem, Pa.) led the receiving corps with four receptions for 52 yards. Sophomores WR Andre Williams and WR Jonah Morris followed in receiving with 45 and 37 yards, respectively. Defensively, senior LB Ulysees Gilbert III led the squad with 12 tackles, while teammate Jamal Davis II corralled the team s lone sack for a five-yard loss. He finished with eight tackles, while senior LB Brian Bell and junior LB John Lako brought down 10 players apiece. Bell and Davis, both, forced fumbles as junior CB Alvin Davis, Jr. and junior DL Devon te Jest picked the loose balls off the turf. In addition, Bell and senior DL Brock Boxen recorded pass break-ups. POSTGAME NOTES With his only reception on the day (at 9:30 in the fourth quarter), redshirt senior Kwadarrius Smith hit the 1,000-yard receiving milestone of his career. He now has 1,011 career yards. In the first quarter, senior LB Brian Bell forced a fumble, the first of his career. It was recovered by junior CB Alvin Davis, Jr., the third of his career and first this season. The turnover set up Akron s first touchdown three plays later. Senior PK/P Nick Gasser nailed a 45-yard field goal in the second quarter to tie the game at The 45-yarder tied his career long. Defending East champion Akron earned 74 points. Ohio was picked first, followed by Buffalo, Miami, and Akron. Bowling Green and Kent State rounded out the picks. In the West Division, Northern Illinois was selected first, followed by Toledo, Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan. Central Michigan and Ball State rounded out the predictions. In the past three seasons, they were a part of the re-building process, helping the Zips to at least five wins [2015 (8), 2016 (5), 2017 (7), 2018 (2) = 22 total] each year. The Zips became bowl eligible twice in three seasons, a program first. They claimed the 2017 MAC East title and three consecutive Wagon Wheel trophies. As a redshirt freshman in 2017, the three-star recruit took over the quarterback reigns and started the last five games, leading Akron to appearances in the MAC Championship game and the Boca Raton Bowl. In 10 games, Nelson was 70-of-140 for 989 yards and eight touchdowns. He rushed 95 times for 198 yards and a touchdown. In the win against Morgan State, Nelson went 16-of-26 for 232 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 42 yards. In the stunning win at Northwestern, Nelson went 17-of-28 for 277 yards and two touchdowns. He was named to the Davey O Brien Great 8 list for week 3. At Iowa State, Nelson went 12-of-28 for 153 yards and a touchdown. He was also the Zips rushing leader with 15 carries for 56 yards. After three games, Nelson is 45-of-82 for 662 yards and six touchdowns. He also has 135 yards rushing on 39 carries. He went 2-of-5 for five yards. SENIOR MENTORS YOUNG BACKFIELD Two-year starter Van Edwards, Jr., (Cape Coral, Fla.) returns for his senior season with a young troupe. The Zips top rusher with 492 yards and three touchdowns on 100 carries in 2016, he had 343 yards and two touchdowns on 94 carries in In the win over Morgan State, Edwards led the Zips with 109 yards, marking the second 100-yard rushing performance of his career. He had 17 carries and two touchdowns on the day. Additionally, Edwards had two receptions for 22 yards. He finished the game with a team-best 131 all-purpose yards. In the stunning win at Northwestern, Edwards led UA with 53 yards on 14 carries. At Iowa State, he rushed 12 times for 23 yards. After three games, Edwards is the Zips leading rusher with 185 yards and two touchdowns on 43 carries. Redshirt junior Deltron Sands (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), who suffered a season-ending injury last fall, had 173 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries in 10 games. He finished with four receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown. His 32-yard TD was just the second in his young career. In the stunning win at Northwestern, Williams had three receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown, including a 56-yard catch. In his second season as a starter in 2017, Gilbert was the Zips top defender with 141 tackles (58 more than the next Zip), 9.5 TFL, a team-best five sacks, five hurries, four break-ups, three interceptions, and a fumble recovery. He also scored two touchdowns for 12 points. In the win over Morgan State, Gilbert led the Zips with six tackles. At Iowa State, King had three tackles. SECONDARY TO NONE Perhaps the Zips strongest unit this fall, the secondary returns all four starters. Entering his senior season is S Alvin Davis (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), who finished second on defense in 2017 with 83 tackles, two break-ups, a TFL, an interception, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. In the win over Morgan State, Davis had three tackles, a forced fumble, an interception, and a breakup. The interception was the second of his career; the forced fumble was a career first. In the stunning win at Northwestern, Davis returned two interceptions for touchdowns (97 yards and 50 yards) in the second half, propelling UA to the come-from-behind road victory. Davis 97-yard interception tied for second-best in program history. It was the first multi-interception and multi-touchdown game of his collegiate career. The game was then delayed and eventually canceled due to lightning and thunderstorms. In the win over Morgan State, Fitschen kicked off eight times for 483 yards, averaging 60.4 yards. The Zips have a record at the venue (a record 5-1 in 2017) and are riding a stadium record five-game winning streak (1-0 in 2018). Attendance from each of the six Zips home games in 2017 ranks among the Top 15 best attended games since the stadium opened in The Zips average attendance (9,232) ranked No. 2 nationally in the NCAA s list of largest increase in attendance from the previous season. The 30,000-seat stadium features 17 suites, state-of-the-art video board, and 80,000 square feet of academic space used daily by all University students. Additionally, the Sport Science and Wellness Education Department conducts classes on two levels, and the University s Alumni Association resides there as well. ZIPS IN THE COMMUNITY While most students were enjoying their summers at home, several members of the football team remained in Akron for the summer and putting their free time to good use. They combined to work on a community service project each week with a goal of 1,000 volunteer hours. Among the projects they worked were: filled orders at the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, diced onions and weeded flower gardens at the Haven of Rest, and taught children at Camp Learn-A-Lot. This fall the Zips will continue weekly visits to Akron Children s Hospital on Fridays before home games. The 14-sport rivalry series between Akron and Kent State is based on a time-honored competition for an historic wooden wagon wheel trophy awarded originally in 1945 to the winner of the annual Akron-Kent State football game. 17 TERRY BOWDEN Head Coach Co-Offensive Coordinator Seventh Season at Akron 25th Season Overall West Virginia 78 The Dean of all Mid-American Conference coaches with 171 career wins, Akron s Terry Bowden is in his seventh season in 2018 at the helm of the UA program. He was named the Zips 27th all-time head coach on Dec. 22, 2011, but he is just the seventh person to hold the position since Owning a record over a 24-year collegiate coaching career, Bowden ranks sixth nationally among active Division I head coaches in career wins (171). Bowden has been responsible for miraculous turnarounds almost everywhere he has coached and has once again done it at The University of Akron. In 2017, the Zips (7-7 overall, 6-2 MAC) soared to first place in the MAC East with huge victories over Ohio and Kent State to claim the division title and a spot in the MAC Championship game for the second time in program history and first time since Akron also advanced to an FBS bowl for the second time in three years, another program first. After opening MAC play at 3-0 for the first time, UA went on to win five home games at InfoCision Stadium Summa Field, the most in a single season since the stadium opened in The Zips won their third consecutive Wagon Wheel (and fourth in last five years) over rival Kent State. Four Zips earned All-MAC recognition with Ulysees Gilbert III capturing first-team honors for the second consecutive year. Alvin Davis, Jr., garnered second-team All- MAC honors. Tra Von Chapman and Jamal Davis II were third-team All-MAC honorees. In 2016, Bowden led UA to a 5-7 overall record, finishing just one play away from back-to-back bowl appearances. The Zips won their second consecutive Wagon Wheel (and third in last four years) over rival Kent State. Akron led the MAC in punt returns (17.53) which also ranked third nationally. In 2015, Bowden guided the Zips to an 8-5 overall record and a second-place finish in the MAC (5-3) East en route to the program s first winning season and bowl appearance since Ranked No. 2 nationally by Phil Steele as the Most Improved Team, Akron captured its first-ever bowl victory in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) era (since 1987) with a win over Utah State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Dec. 22. UA won the 500th game in program history with a victory at Louisiana on Sept. 26, 2015, while closing out the season with five consecutive wins. The Zips shut out rival Kent State, 20-0, in the home finale to regain possession of the coveted Wagon Wheel. The eight wins on the season were the most in the FBS era. The offense, which was conducted in a hurry-up no-huddle style, was led by QB Dalton Williams, who set the program s single-season record for touchdown passes (25) and pass completions (326-for-522), while compiling the third most passing yards (3,387) in a season in school history. Bowden, who served as a studio analyst and color commentator with ABC Sports college football for 10 years, was the head coach at Auburn from and spent the three seasons prior to coming to Akron at Division II North Alabama. Bowden was an assistant coach at Akron in 1986 under then Zips head coach Gerry Faust. In 2013, Bowden led UA to its highest win total since 2008 by going 5-7 overall and 4-4 against the MAC, as well as ending the year by winning three straight and four of its last five games. The Zips offense exploded for five touchdowns, three in the air and two on the ground, while the defense limited the Bears to 192 yards of total offense with two interceptions, two forced fumbles, one sack, and one fumble recovery. For the first time in Akron football history, the Zips defeated a Big Ten opponent as Akron held on to a victory over Northwestern on Saturday evening at Ryan Field. Whatever Zips head coach Terry Bowden said to the team at halftime worked as the Akron offense nearly doubled its yardage output in the third quarter. The Zips only managed to gain 123 yards of total offense in the first half, but the next 30 minutes proved to be the game changer. Akron (2-1) Iowaa State (1-2) AMES, Iowa Akron fell on the road to Big 12 opponent Iowa State on Saturday afternoon at MidAmerican Energy Field at Jack Trice Stadium. It was a closely fought battle throughout as the Akron (2-1) defense gave the Iowa State (1-2) offense trouble all game. Iowa State led by a touchdown at the break (17-10), and added three second-half field goals for their first win of the season. Iowa State outscored Akron 9-3 in the final 30 minutes of play. The defense had a strong first half and continued to challenge the NU offense in the second half.
