2 Utah Head Coach Jim Boylen Jim Boylen was named the 14th men s head basketball coach at the University of Utah on March 27, Although this is his first head coaching position, Boylen brings 20 years of coaching experience in the collegiate and professional ranks with him to Utah. After working in the NBA for 13 years, Boylen served as the top assistant to Tom Izzo at Michigan State during the and seasons. He helped direct the Spartans to a record and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. Boylen also began his coaching career at Michigan State, working under former head coach Jud Heathcote from After serving as a graduate assistant for two seasons he was promoted to a full-time assistant in 1989, filling that role for three years. The Spartans won the Big Ten Conference title and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament in Michigan State also advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 1991 and Following his first stint at Michigan State, Boylen joined the Houston Rockets as a video coordinator in 1992 and was promoted to assistant coach just two years later. With Boylen on staff, the Rockets won back-to-back NBA Championships in 1994 and 1995 and advanced to the NBA Western Conference Finals in During Boylen s 11-year stint in Houston, the Rockets made seven playoff appearances and had nine winning seasons. While coaching with the Rockets, Boylen worked with four of the NBA s 50 Greatest Players in Charles Barkley, Clyde Drexler, Hakeem Olajuwon and Scottie Pippen. While in Houston, Boylen also worked under Rudy Tomjanovich -- one of the greatest coaches in NBA history. Boylen s duties included skill development, game and practice preparation, working with the perimeter players, as well as positioning and shooting. He was also in charge of team and opponent analysis. In , Boylen worked as an assistant coach at Golden State. He spent the season with the Milwaukee Bucks. A native of East Grand Rapids, Mich., Boylen received his bachelor s degree in business from Maine in He captained the Black Bears basketball team as a junior and senior and earned first-team all-north Atlantic Conference honors in his final year, averaging 21 points per game. He finished second in the conference Player of the Year voting to Northeastern s Reggie Lewis. Boylen and his wife, Christine, have two daughters, Ashlen Clare and Layla Blue. Runnin Ute Fast Breaks Two Utah players are averaging double-digit points per game, while three more average 7.6 or more. Utah has had the edge in bench points 23 times in 28 games this year. Utah held a edge off the bench in Tuesday s win over Colorado State. Utah has held six different opponents to 54 points or less this season. The Runnin Utes did not hold a single opponent to less than 55 points. Utah holds a (.609) record against current members of the Mountain West Conference. The Utes have a winning record against every other member of the league. The Runnin Utes currently rank No. 1 in the MWC in field-goal percentage. Utah is converting at a.484 clip from the field, which also ranks No. 22 in the nation in the latest NCAA rankings. Utah is No. 4 in the MWC in scoring defense, allowing 62.7 points per game. The Runnin Utes have held all but four of their opponents below their current averages in regulation play this season. Scouting the Rebels UNLV comes into Saturday s matchup coming off a loss at New Mexico Tuesday. The Rebels are 22-7 overall and 11-4 in the MWC. UNLV shot just.333 from the field in Tuesday night s loss to the Lobos. Wink Adams was the only doubledigit scorer for the Rebels, who scored their fewest points of the season. Three Rebels average double-digit scoring, led by Wink Adams (16.0 ppg), who is the No. 3 scorer in the MWC. Joe Darger (11.8) and Curtis Terry (10.1) are the other double-digit scorers. Rene Rougeau is the team s top rebounder, grabbing 5.6 caroms per contest. Terry is also the team s top playmaker, averaging 4.93 assists per game, which is the top mark in the conference. Last Time vs. UNLV (Feb. 6, 2008) Luke Nevill and Johnnie Bryant each scored a season-high 26 points to lead to Utah to a victory over UNLV, snapping a five-game losing streak to the Rebels. Nevill scored 14 of his points in the final 11 minutes, and the Utes made 12-of-13 free throws in the final six minutes to snap UNLV s five-game overall winning streak and drop the Rebels out of a first-place tie for the Mountain West Conference lead. Joe Darger led the Rebels with 18 points, and Curtis Terry added 14. Utah held leading scorer Wink Adams to just 11 points on 3-for-11 shooting. 3 Last Time Out - Utah 82, Colorado State 61 SALT LAKE CITY -- Shaun Green scored a seasonhigh 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Utah snapped a four-game losing streak by handing Colorado State its 16th straight loss, on Tuesday night. The Utes (16-12, 7-8 Mountain West) dominated from the start, shooting 58 percent and badly outrebounding the Rams (6-23, 0-15). Colorado State had only one starter--6-foot-6 forward Andre McFarland--taller than 6-4 because of injuries to 7-foot centers Stuart Creason and Ronnie Aguilar. Utah capitalized on the height advantage with had 39 rebounds to Colorado State s 22 and ended a fourgame losing streak. In the absence of an inside game, the Rams shot a season-high 32 three-pointers. They made 12 of them, but shot 38.6 percent overall and allowed Utah to open the game on an 18-6 run. The Utes led by as many as 23 points, before settling for the 21-point victory. Luke Nevill scored 19 points for the Utes, while Johnnie Bryant added 14 and Kim Tillie scored 13. McFarland led the Rams with 15 points. Green and Bryant both hit four 3-pointers in the contest. Utah hit 68 percent of its field-goal attempts in the second half and shot.582 for the game. It was the highest field-goal percentage Utah has recorded in Mountain West Conference play so far this season. Ute-nited Nations The University of Utah men s basketball team is made up of student-athletes from five different nations and three of the seven continents. Of the 14 players on the Runnin Ute roster, 10 hail from the United States and four are international. Two Utah players are from Europe. The Utes two Europeans are Kim Tillie (France) and Luka Drca (Serbia). Luke Nevill hails from Australia. For good measure, Utah adds a Canadian to the mix with Tyler Kepkay. During the summer, the Utes would often scrimmage with a full international team against an American squad. For the internationals, Kepkay would play the point, while Drca manned the shooting guard spot. Australian Stephen Weigh (who has since left the team) was the small forward, while Tillie and Nevill roamed the paint as the power forward and center, respectively. One Win Needed One more victory for the Runnin Utes this season will assure them of their first winning season since Utah was overall in and in The Utes have a record and are assured of at least three more games. Therefore, 16 wins would give Utah a winning record, which would be a first for every player on the roster with the exception of Chris Grant, who played in Take Two, They re Free Despite a 5-of-10 performance Saturday at Wyoming, Utah is still the top free-throw shooting team (by percentage) in the Mountain West Conference. The Utes are converting at a rate of.748 from the charity stripe. They are ranked No. 1 in the MWC and No. 16 in the nation in the most recent statistical reports. While Utah has shot the ball very well at the line for much of the season, the Utes continue to struggle getting there. Utah ranks last in the MWC in free throws attempted per game (15.1). Three-For-All Utah is one of just two teams in the Mountain West Conference to shoot better than 40 percent from 3-point range. In fact, there are only 14 teams in the nation who can boast a.400 percentage or better from beyond the arc. Utah currently ranks No. 2 in the MWC and No. 9 in the nation with its point field-goal percentage. The Utes went without a 3-pointer in the first half of Saturday s loss to Wyoming, the first time that has happened this season. They came back to hit three triples in the second half, however. The 7-foot 1-inch Aussie hasn t been quite that hot this season. However, he heated up a bit in his last two outings, going 16-of-28 (.571) and has raised his overall fieldgoal percentage to.544 (No. 2 in the MWC). Nevill has averaged 20.5 points in 21 minutes over the last two contests. Nevill s 1.61 blocked shots per game lead the MWC. He is averaging 14.3 points per game. Bryant currently ranks 3rd in the MWC and 13th in the nation in 3-point field-goal percentage, hitting at a.460 clip from behind the arc. Bryant is No. 2 among players who have started fewer than one-quarter of their team s contests. Drca s Dishes Sophomore guard Luka Drca has eclipsed the 100-assist mark, making him the first Ute to do so in three seasons. The Utes top playmaker last season was Johnnie Bryant, who handed out just 81 assists. Drca dished out 10 Tuesday, pushing his total to 104 (an average of 3.9 helpers per game). His current total is the most since Marc Jackson recorded 128 assists in Drca currently ranks No. 4 in the Mountain West Conference in assists per game and is the only non-starter in the league s top 10 in that category. Shaun s Shots Junior forward Shaun Green enjoyed his best all-around game of the season Tuesday night vs. Colorado State. He scored a season-high 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and his eight field goals were also a season-high. Green hit four 3-pointers in the contest vs. the Rams, the most triples he has made since nailing four on Jan. 26 vs. TCU. He is now averaging 7.9 points per game. In addition to the scoring output, Green pulled down nine rebounds vs. CSU, pushing his rebounding average to a season-high 5.0 per game. For the season, Nevill (412) and Bryant (399) have combined to score 811 of Utah s 1,921 points (42.2 percent). Nevill or Bryant have either led Utah in scoring or tied for that honor in 19 of Utah s 28 games this season. Deseret First Duel The basketball matchups are now over in the first-ever Deseret First Duel series, sponsored by Deseret First Credit Union. The Utah men were swept by BYU, while the Ute women swept the Cougars. Brigham Young University now leads the series by a tally of For more details on the Deseret First Duel, visit www. deseretfirstcu.org/duel/. The next Deseret First Duel matchup will be March 28, when the women s gymnastics teams square off at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City.

5 Join The Club Junior Luke Nevill and senior Johnnie Bryant both joined Utah s 1,000-Point Club this season, becoming the 32nd and 33rd Utes in the 100-year history of Utah Basketball to reach that milestone. It s only the third time in Utah history that teammates reached 1,000 points in the same season. Tom Chambers and Danny Vranes turned that trick in 1980, while Nick Jacobson and Britton Johnsen accomplished the feat in Bryant is currently ranked No. 22 all-time in career scoring at Utah, while Nevill sits just behind him in the No. 23 spot. Both Nevill and Bryant reached 1,000 points in their third year at Utah. Of the 33 members of the 1,000-Point Club, 24 of them (including Nevill and Bryant) reached the 1,000-point mark in three years or less. ***See entire listing of Utah s 1,000-Point Club at right*** U-Tube There is now more Utah men s basketball content available via the web.
