4 BULLDOGS BY THE NUMBERS 10 WINS: MSU is on the cusp of its first 10-win season in more than a decade (2001). Winning on Friday would give the Bulldogs 10 wins for just the fourth time in school history. TEAM NOTES MAKING HISTORY The Bulldogs earned their first ranking in program history at No. 19 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com poll on Sept. 24. MSU picked up its first ever ranking in the coaches poll at No. 25 on Oct. 2. Tom Anagnost has now led the Bulldogs to their highest RPI in school history in back-to-back years. Last season, MSU climbed as high as No. 37 for the first time. This season, State opened the year at No. 2 and checks in at the No. 10 spot this week. MSU was one of three teams in the SEC to win all of its non-conference contests along with Auburn and Texas A&M. This year marks just the third time in school history State has done so. Combined with the end of 2017, State s perfect non-conference stretch led to a school-record-tying eight-match winning streak. State s win over Alabama (10/7) guaranteed that the Bulldogs finish the regular season above.500, marking just the second pair of consecutive winning seasons in school history ( ). RECORD WATCH MaKayla Waldner set the school record for single-season game-winning goals with five last year. After recording the game-winning goal in the first two matches of 2018, she is just two shy of matching the MSU career record. With one more shot on goal and one more goal, Waldner will move into the top five for her career in both categories. Zakirah McGillivary tied Waldner s single-season mark and broke the Bulldogs freshman record for game-winning goals with her fifth of the year against Alabama (10/7). McGillivary is also chasing Jessi Moore s freshman goals record of 11 set in She scored her seventh against the Tide. Miranda Carrasco is fourth on the freshman leaderboard in assists (7), but would need nine more to catch Moore s 2001 performance. She is tied for sixth in MSU single-season history. Rhylee DeCrane has seven shutouts this year, tying the MSU single-season record. With a win, she would become just the second Bulldog keeper to win 10 games in a season (Krystal Werges -13, 2001). DeCrane s current 0.78 goals against average this year would be the lowest in school history. Carly Mauldin is 138 minutes away from moving up to sixth all-time for her career. ROLLING THE TIDE The 5-2 win over Alabama (10/7) was the first time State has ever scored five goals in an SEC match and tied the Bulldogs 5-2 win at Memphis (8/23) for their highest-scoring game of the year. MSU tallied nine assists in the match, and nine different players recorded points. The nine assists rank fourth in program history. Freshmen have accounted for 40.0 percent of the team s points.78 GOALS AGAINST AVERAGE: Redshirt senior Rhylee DeCrane has had a breakout season. Her current goals against average would be a (36 of 90). single-season school record. Four players, Niah Johnson, Brooke McKee, Carly Mauldin and Hailey Zerbel, earned multiple points in the match. Zerbel became the first MSU player with three assists in a conference match, while Mauldin recorded the first multi-goal game of her career. YOUTH MOVEMENT State is tied with LSU and South Carolina for the highest number of freshmen in the SEC this season (13). Eighteen of MSU s 27 players are underclassmen (66.7 percent), which ranks sixth in the conference. The Bulldogs welcome 15 newcomers and return 12 players from a year ago. Of all the teams on State s schedule this season, only South Alabama (11) returned fewer players. MSU s freshman have accounted for 40.0 percent of its points. FIRST BLOOD State was when scoring first in 2017 and is this year when opening the scoring. All-time, the Bulldogs are when they net the first goal of a match. The Bulldogs found the net just 3:10 into the 2018 season when MaKayla Waldner scored a header goal. She followed that performance with the 10th-fastest goal in school history at Stephen F. Austin (0:56). At Memphis, Brooke McKee scored just 1:10 into the match to close a streak of five matches with MSU scoring inside the first five minutes dating back to last year. MSU s 11-game streak of scoring first ended at Auburn (9/14) after the Bulldogs posted a record over that span. State has scored within the first 10 minutes five times this year. DAWG DEFENSE Defense has become a highlight under second-year head coach Tom Anagnost. Since he took over the program, the Bulldogs have only lost by multiple goals one time (3-0 at Auburn, 9/14). MSU is holding opponents to an average of 11.4 shots per game. The lowest MSU has ever turned in for a full season is 12.0 in both the 2015 and 2017 seasons. State has held opponents to five or fewer shots four times this season and a.075 shooting percentage. PARTY LIKE IT S 99 Zakirah McGillivary sent a school-record crowd home happy with an overtime winner against No. 13/6 South Carolina (9/20) and was named the SEC Freshman of the Week (9/24) for her efforts. McGillivary also earned the honor (8/27) after scoring two goals and picking up an assist against Memphis and South Alabama. Her first award marked the first time a Bulldog has received the honor since The second made her the first MSU player to be recognized with a weekly honor twice in one season. McGillivary scored her first career goal and assisted on the first goal of the match at Memphis (8/23). She followed that performance with the game-winner at South Alabama (8/26). The goal at South Alabama kicked off a streak that saw her score the game-winner in three straight matches including Central Arkansas (8/30) and Austin Peay (9/2). McGillivary now has sole possession of State s freshman record for game-winning goals (5) and has tied MaKayla Waldner s single-season record set last year. MSU PLAYING 24 TH SEASON OF SOCCER State will play its 24 th season of soccer in MSU holds a all-time record. MSU s match against Austin Peay on Sept. 2 marked the 23 rd anniversary of the first match in school history. Anagnost became the fastest coach in program history to win 10 matches with the Bulldog victory over Southern Miss (8/16), doing so in just 19 games. EYES ON ORANGE BEACH AND BEYOND MSU is looking to make it back to the SEC Tournament for the first time since The Bulldogs are currently tied for tenth, with one of the tied teams missing the cut.
