7 Lynn BRIA Head Coach Seventh Season Charleston 90 Over the course of the past six seasons, Head Coach Lynn Bria has placed her imprint on the Ohio women s basketball program, enlivening the entire Bobcat basketball family with her unbridled enthusiasm, intensity and passion for the game. Now moving into her seventh season in Athens, it s been Bria s tenacious, up-tempo style of basketball that has shaped the Bobcats into a perennial contender in the Mid-American Conference. Bria s dedication has been contagious to players, staff, fans and faculty alike in Athens. It is with that commitment to excellence that Ohio has become known for its ability to win on its home floor. In the season, Bria s Bobcats finished the campaign with an 11-3 mark in The Convo, including a victory over Central Michigan in the first round of the MAC Tournament. It is exactly that kind of determination from Bria that led Ohio University to hire the West Virginia native in the spring of 1999 to take control of the women s basketball program. She wasted little time in letting everyone know she was the right person for the job. In her first year at Ohio, she almost tripled the number of wins the team had the year before. The next two seasons saw the Bobcats reach the MAC Tournament quarterfinals at Gund Arena. The first-round win over Bowling Green in 2002 was the first home postseason game for Ohio since Bria came to Athens after three years at Central Florida, having led the Golden Knights to a record overall and an impressive (.687) mark in Atlantic Sun Conference play. In , UCF got its second-ever NCAA invitation after winning the A- Sun regular season and tournament titles. Despite an NCAA Tournament loss to eventual Final Four participant Louisiana Tech, the Golden Knights finished overall and 13-3 in league play. Bria was hired as an assistant at UCF in the summer of 1996, just before an automobile accident in August tragically killed Golden Knights head coach Jerry Richardson. The UCF administration called on Bria to serve as interim head coach, and she rose to the occasion. In her first season, despite filling an unforeseen role, Bria posted a record in and improved the squad to a record of the following year. She left the UCF program as the second-winningest women s basketball coach in school history. Bria went to Central Florida after serving three seasons as head coach at Texas Woman s University in Denton, Texas. Prior to that, she spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Marshall and was an assistant coach for one year at Radford. Bria is a 1990 graduate of the University of Charleston (W. Va.), where she was a two-sport star. On the basketball floor, Bria earned first-team All- West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors as a senior after being named an honorable mention selection the previous two season. She helped the Golden Eagles to the NAIA national tournament twice and was also named to the conference all-tournament team as a junior. Bria was also a standout on the tennis court, earning all-conference recognition as a senior and leading that squad to the NAIA National Tournament. Bria was honored with induction into the University of Charleston Athletic Hall of Fame in A Charleston native, Bria is a 1985 graduate of Charleston Catholic High School. She is the last of nine children born to Sam and Jo Nancy Bria. She is an active member of the Women s Basketball Coaches Association and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Bria is currently pursuing her doctorate degree from Ohio University. Va. - Rachel Frederick scored 22 points in her Bobcat debut and sparked a furious second-half comeback, but a sharp-shooting South Carolina State squad downed the Ohio women s basketball team Friday in the opening game of the Fifth-Third Marshall University Classic. After posting just two points in the first half, Frederick, a true freshman, scored 20 points in the second half and helped the Bobcats (0-1) close in on a late Bulldog lead. For the game, Frederick hit three three-pointers, went 9-for-10 from the free-throw line and fell just one rebound short of a double-double. South Carolina State (1-0) built a 14-point lead into halftime and increased its edge in the second half. As the second frame neared a close, though, the Bobcats clawed back and began to carve into the lead. A Frederick three-pointer from the top of the key with 2:35 remaining in the game brought Ohio to within 10. After a couple South Carolina State free throws, Ciara Iglehart hit a three of her own to make the score at 2:18. Another pair of free throws followed for the Bulldogs, but once again it was Frederick, this time from well beyond the three-point arc, pushing the score to with 1:57 left. Down the stretch, though, the Bulldogs were consistent from the free-throw line and held on for the victory. The Bulldogs shot 44.4 percent from behind the arc for the game, hitting 8-of-18 attempts. South Carolina State led by 14 points at the half and used 18 secondhalf points from Fallon Tucker to come away with the win. Sophomore guard Simone Redd led the charge in the first half for the Bobcats, scoring Ohio s first seven points and nine of the team s first 11 to open the game. Redd finished the half with nine points, three boards and three assists. Six other Bobcats entered the scoring column in the first frame, including five points from point guard Quintana Ward. Lauren Revesz picked up four of Ohio s 19 rebounds-- all on the offensive end. Redd, Ward and Iglehart were all perfect from the charity stripe in the first half, leading the Bobcats to a 90.9 percentage (10-11). Officials: Don Green, Bruce Morris, Jim Vastine Technical fouls: Ohio-None. South Carolina State-None. Attendance: Score by Periods 1st 2nd Total Ohio South Carolina State ID Out of the break, South Carolina State continued to build on its lead.
