The Bulldogs shut out the Tigers 14-0 in the 1960 Orange Bowl in Miami. Georgia finished 10-1 and won the program s fourth career SEC title that season. The Tigers opened their 2012 season with a win over Southeastern Louisiana. In fact, Missouri plays its first four games of the season at home. After the matchup with Georgia, the Tigers host Arizona State and South Carolina. Bulldogs Open Up SEC Play In Columbia Again Much like they did in 1992, the Bulldogs will open up the conference season against the Southeastern Conference s newest member. Since 1992, Georgia has always opened up the SEC schedule versus South Carolina when the Gamecocks joined the league. However in 2012, the Bulldogs will face Missouri in Columbia, Mo., in the Tigers SEC debut. The last time Georgia faced a team other than South Carolina in its SEC opener was in The Bulldogs downed LSU in Athens that year. Did You Know? During the season, Georgia went on a 10-game winning streak. This was the longest inseason winning streak since the 1982 team under Vince Dooley went a perfect 11-0 during the regular season. Georgia has now won 11 consecutive regular season games following its 2012 victory over Buffalo. The streak ranks as the second-longest active regular season winning streak in the nation behind LSU (14). Under Mark Richt, UGA also won 11 straight games over a span of two seasons once before, winning the final seven in 2007 and the first four in NFL Taking Notice Georgia had seven selections in the 2012 NFL Draft, tying Oklahoma for second best in the nation. This marked the second-most Bulldogs drafted in any seven-round draft behind the eight taken in Georgia currently has 35 former players on active NFL rosters as the cuts to trim teams down to 53 happened last Friday. ON DECK: vs. Florida Atlantic This will be the first-ever meeting between the Bulldogs and FAU. The Owls edged Wagner 7-3 on Aug. 31. FAU travels to Middle Tennessee on Saturday. Freshman Todd Gurley led the Bulldog ground attack with eight carries for 100 yards (12.5 avg.). He scored two touchdowns in the first three times he touched the ball. Gurley s first career carry covered 1 yard. His second resulted in a 10-yard touchdown. On Gurley s third touch, he returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. Then, Gurley scampered 55 yards for a touchdown on his eighth and final carry of the game. He finished with 227 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns. Gurley became the first Bulldog freshman to go over 100 yards rushing in his season-opening debut since Danny Ware had 135 yards versus Georgia Southern in Fellow freshman Keith Marshall was the second-leading rusher with 10 carries for 46 yards. Marshall was also on the kickoff coverage team. Redshirt sophomore TB Ken Malcome started the game and senior Richard Samuel got snaps at both TB and FB for the Bulldogs. Redshirt freshman Merritt Hall started the game at FB. Gurley Named SEC Co-Freshman Player Of The Week True freshman TB Todd Gurley was named the Southeastern Conference Co-Freshman Player of the Week following his performance against the Bulls. In addition to his 100 yards rushing and two touchdowns, the Tarboro, N.C., native also recorded a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. This effort tied the SEC and NCAA records and is the fourth 100-yard kickoff return for the Bulldogs in the program s history (current Philadelphia Eagle Brandon Boykin had the other three). Gurley shared this week s honor with Alabama TB T.J. Yeldon. First-Time Starters Georgia had five first-time starters during the victory over Buffalo. Sophomore C David Andrews, true freshman RT John Theus and redshirt freshman FB Merritt Hall all lined up on Georgia s first play from the line of scrimmage. On defense, redshirt freshman CB Devin Bowman and redshirt sophomore FS Connor Norman both started. Also of note, true freshman PK Marshall Morgan began his career as the Bulldogs kicker and true freshman P Collin Barber also recorded his first two punts. Four projected starters on defense were missing in the season opener. All-American FS Bacarri Rambo, junior ILB Alec Ogletree, senior CB Sanders Commings and sophomore two-way threat Malcolm Mitchell were all missing from Georgia s lineup versus Buffalo. 4 OFFENSE Murray Setting The Tone For SEC Quarterbacks QB Aaron Murray returns for his junior year and looks to be one of the nation s elite at his position. During the offseason, Murray graduated with a degree in Psychology after posting a GPA of 3.4 and is now in graduate school. The Tampa, Fla., native finished with a school record 35 touchdown passes. He also set the school record for touchdown responsibility by a QB in a season with 37 (35 passing, 2 rushing) last year. In just two quarters of play versus New Mexico State in, Murray tied a school record with five touchdown passes. His five scores all went to different receivers. Murray finished the season second in the SEC in total offense at y/g while the Bulldogs were third in the same category at In his 17 wins as a starter, Murray has 42 TDs to just nine INTs. Murray is the SEC s leading active player in total offensive yards (6,722), completions (462), TD responsibility (68), TD passes (62) and passing yards (6,456). Career TD Passes 1. In 2012, Georgia aims to redshirt Mason to give him a year separation with junior Aaron Murray. Mason is currently No. 2 on the depth chart. Redshirt freshman QB Christian LeMay, a 2009 SuperPrep All-American, saw his first Bulldog action versus Buffalo in the 2012 opener. He had three rushes for 36 yards. Redshirt sophomore Parker Welch is the only other quarterback with collegiate playing experience. Welch played in two games last season and completed his only pass for 20 yards versus Coastal Carolina. Plugging The Holes On The Offensive Line Georgia s starting offensive line in the season opener featured junior Kenarious Gates at LT, junior Chris Burnette at RG, junior Dallas Lee at RT, sophomore David Andrews at C and freshman John Theus at RT. Andrews and Theus were making their first career starts while Gates lined up at LT for the first time after having 12 previous starts at guard. Theus left the Buffalo game with an ankle injury. He is the younger brother of Bulldog backup snapper Nathan Theus. Theus also became the first true freshman starter at tackle since Trinton Sturdivant in Sturdivant started all 13 games at tackle that season. Early enrollee Mark Beard, who was a NJCAA All-American at Coffeyville CC last year, gives Georgia depth at guard and tackle. The next two who saw action in the season opener were sophomore Watts Dantzler and junior Austin Long. Georgia lost seniors C Ben Jones (Houston), LT Cordy Glenn (Buffalo) and RT Justin Anderson (Indianapolis) to the NFL after the trio enabled the Bulldogs to set school records for total plays and touchdown passes in, as well as roll up an average of total yards and 32.0 points per game. Glenn finished with 50 starts, including the team s last 47 games, and tied the school record for the most starts for a Bulldog lineman (Clint Boling, ). Jones started 49 games in his career. Who To Cover? The Bulldogs attacked the opposition in with a wide variety of weapons at receiver. In fact, QB Aaron Murray threw touchdowns to 10 different Bulldogs last year. In the 2012 season opener, Murray completed passes to four different Bulldogs and three of them caught a touchdown pass. Last season, senior Tavarres King led the crew with 705 yards on 47 catches and eight touchdowns, including a school record 205 yards and a score on six receptions in the Outback Bowl. In the win over Buffalo to start 2012, he led all receivers with six catches for 117 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown. King, who has already graduated in Social Studies Education, is the SEC s active leader in both receptions (100) and receiving yards (1,769). Close behind King in last year s standings was freshman Malcolm Mitchell who snagged 45 catches for 665 yards and four touchdowns in just 11 games played. While he will also play CB this fall, Mitchell sat out the Buffalo game with an ankle injury. In addition, senior SE Marlon Brown missed the season opener with a hamstring injury. With Mitchell and Brown out, redshirt sophomore Michael Bennett and junior Rantavious Wooten were two of Murray s top targets against the Bulldogs. Bennett snagged five catches for 76 and a touchdown while Wooten finished with two catches for 45 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown catch in the corner of the end zone. CAREER ,

5 Dog Tracks DEFENSE & SPECIAL TEAMS Getting Defensive Georgia surrendered 23 points to Buffalo in the season opener. It was a tale of two halves for the Bulldog defense. The Bulls had two touchdown drives that covered 75 yards each and one that covered 94 yards. Georgia did have a goal-line stand at the end of the opening half that resulted in a Buffalo field goal. Passing Yds. Total Off Here s a look inside the numbers for the Georgia defense this season: 2012 Opp. Plays Yards Points Allowed vs. UB SEC Sack Leader Jarvis Jones Is Back For More Junior OLB and Butkus Award finalist Jarvis Jones gives the Bulldogs a solid foundation at linebacker. In the season opener, Jones tied for the team lead with eight tackles, including 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss. He also forced a fumble versus the Bulls. A consensus All-American, he led the SEC and was tied for fifth nationally with 13.5 sacks (which was just a half sack off David Pollack s school record 14 set in 2002) last year. The Columbus native was also No. 1 in the league with 19.5 tackles for loss. Thanks in part to his persistence in the opponent s backfield, the Bulldog defense was second in the SEC with 35 sacks in and 33 of those sacks came in SEC action. Stellar Linebacker Corps Extends Past Jones While Jarvis Jones stacked up the accolades and broke into the headlines the most in, the Bulldogs also return the other three starters at linebacker and a handful of veteran reserves. Senior ILB Michael Gilliard assumed a starting role for the first time last year and finished third on the team with 65 tackles, including seven for loss. Gilliard opened 2012 with seven tackles versus Buffalo. Sophomore Amarlo Herrera and senior Christian Robinson also combined for 10 tackles against the Bulldogs. True freshman Jordan Jenkins also made his Bulldog debut at OLB and recorded a pair of stops. Junior Alec Ogletree missed the 2012 season opener. Stingy Secondary Mostly Intact Georgia played a revamped secondary versus Buffalo with three projected starters unavailable (senior All-American Bacarri Rambo, senior Sanders Commings and sophomore two-way threat Malcolm Mitchell). The Bulldogs lined up in the nickel with redshirt freshman CB Devin Bowman, senior SS Shawn Williams, redshirt sophomore FS Connor Norman, senior CB Branden Smith and sophomore CB Damian Swann. This marked the first starts and the most significant playing time for both Bowman and Norman. Swann led the team with a career-high eight tackles in just his second career Swann also was the primary punt returner for the Bulldogs and had one return for 30 yards and four fair catches. Rambo was the most dangerous threat to opposing quarterbacks last season after managing an SEC-leading eight interceptions to complement 55 tackles. The AP First Team All-American also shot to third in the school record books by returning those eight picks 157 yards, including a return for a touchdown versus #24 Auburn. Commings made 14 starts in (11 at CB, three at S) and finished with 55 tackles, including 46 solos. Smith will see ample time at CB and in the return game. Mitchell is expected to do the same, plus see action on offense. Veteran Presence Up Front Senior N John Jenkins, a 6-3, 358-pound native of Meriden, Conn., tied his career high with six tackles versus Buffalo. Jenkins is in his second season with the Bulldogs and is flanked by seniors Abry Jones and Cornelius Washington at the DE spots. Jones and Washington had four stops apiece to give Georgia a stout trio in the 3-4 defense. Junior DE Garrison Smith, who posted six stops of his own versus the Bulldogs, junior N Kwame Geathers and sophomore DE Ray Drew are also in the rotation up front. Freshmen Specialists The Bulldogs have a pair of true freshmen specialists. P Collin Barber of Cartersville, Ga., and PK Marshall Morgan of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., made their debut against the Bulls. Morgan hit 1-of-2 field goals (hit a 35 yarder, missed a 45 yarder) and connected on all six extra points. Barber also lifted a 57-yard punt on his first punt and finished with a two-punt average of It marked the first time since 1985 that Georgia opened a season with a punter and placekicker without any collegiate experience. That year, punter Cris Carpenter and placekicker Steve Crumley were redshirt freshman. Redshirt sophomore P Adam Erickson recorded three pooch punts for the Bulldogs in the season opener. Georgia lost two seasoned veterans at punter and place kicker from its squad. All-American punter Drew Butler was named the 2009 Ray Guy Award winner for being the nation s top punter and finished as the school s alltime leader and second in SEC history with a 45.4 average. Place kicker Blair Walsh finished his career as the SEC s all-time leading scorer with 412 points, which ranks fifth all-time in NCAA history. He drilled 10 field goals of 50 or more yards and is slated to start for the Minnesota Vikings. Butler also earned a starting spot for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Return Men Georgia featured a couple of newcomers returning kickoffs and punts in the first game of Freshman TB Todd Gurley tied a school, SEC and NCAA record with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the first quarter. His return came on the third time he touched the ball as a collegiate player. Gurley was named the College Football Performance Awards National Kickoff Returner of the Week for his efforts. This was the first time the Bulldogs have had a 100-yard return since Brandon Boykin accomplished the feat versus Kentucky in Boykin had three of them in his career. Gurley s return was the 43rd 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in SEC history. The Bulldogs have had 17 special teams touchdowns since Mark Richt took the head coaching job in Gurley also had a 27-yard return late in the second quarter to finish with two returns for 127 yards. CB Damian Swann had his first career punt return covering 30 yards. He had four fair catches in the game. Also, CB Branden Smith had a fair catch on one punt return for the Bulldogs. Another note in the punt return game, sophomore FLK Chris Conley blocked a Buffalo punt to set up a 35-yard field goal. Conley s block was the 20th punt block in the Richt era.

They played extremely well. 1-0 is a great thing. We ve got some things to clean up, there s no doubt about that. We had a play with 10 men on the field and a play with 12 men on the field. We had some issues that should not happen. But they did, so we ve got to correct them and square them away for next week. Worth Noting Georgia s all-time record in season openers is , including a 10-0 mark when starting a season at home under Mark Richt. Game captains were Aaron Murray, Shawn Williams, Ty Frix and Abry Jones. Chris Conley blocked a punt early in the second quarter to give the Bulldogs the ball at the Buffalo 23.
