The Blue Streaks accolades include 16 National Champions, over 100 All- Americans, 16 top ten team finishes, 2 runner-up finishes, and the 1975 NCAA Championship. John Carroll University served as the host for the national tournament in 1975, 1981, and Six individuals and the 1975 team won National Championships in front of their home crowd in the gym that is today called the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center. Prior to the season, John Carroll competed in what was known as the NCAA College Division. During that time, two wrestlers (Tom Corbo and Larry Dulay, 1971) earned All-American status. Up until the season, the Division III Champion qualified for the Division I National Tournament. Through this process two wrestlers (Mark Hawald, 1976 and Jim Weir, 1976 and 1978) earned Division I All-American honors. 5 1975 NCAA Championship Team After finishing in second place at the 1974 NCAA Division III National Championships, there was only one more goal to achieve to bring home the national title. At the 1975 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, which were hosted by John Carroll, the Blue Streaks captured the title thanks to four national champions. Mark Hawald (134), Charles Becks (150), Brad Bowman (177), and Joe Bertolone (Hvy) were National Champions and Jack Mulhall (126) was a runner-up. The Blue Streaks scored 111 team points to pull away from Montclair State (96), and 1974 national champion Wilkes (92). In the 42 year history of the NCAA Division III Wrestling Tournament, only ten teams have won a team title and of those ten teams only seven currently compete in Division III wrestling. 6 NCAA Champions Joe Bertolone, 1974 and 1975 Bertolone won back-to-back titles at the heavyweight class in the 1974 and 1975 NCAA Championships. His 1974 title came quickly, as he pinned his finals opponent in a mere 18 seconds to win the first ever Division III heavyweight title as the 1974 tournament was the inaugural event. His 1975 title came by a hard fought 5-2 decision and capped off the celebration for the Blue Streaks 1975 NCAA Championship team. Mark Hawald, 1975 and 1976 After finishing third as a sophomore, Hawald won his first title with a 3-2 decision in the pound championship match. He repeated in 1976 with a commanding 13-7 win in the finals. He was one of only two wrestlers in JCU history to earn Division I All-American status. A three-time PAC champion at 134 pounds, he finished his career with 86 victories -- the most in program history at the time he graduated Charles Becks, 1975 Becks was the national runner-up at 150 pounds in 1974 and won the NCAA Division III title in Winning his title at 150 pounds, he was one of a record four national champions that year and helped John Carroll score 111 points to hold off Montclair State (96 points) for the NCAA title. Brad Bowman, 1975 A three-time All-American, Bowman won an individual national title in 1975 at 177 lbs. His title helped JCU capture its first and only national team title. Bowman s career included 90 wins, four PAC Championships and three NCIT crowns. He was the NCAA runner-up in both 1976 and 1977 at 177 lbs. Jack Mulhall, 1976 A two-time All-American at 118 pounds, Jack Mulhall won Carroll s first 118-pound national title when he claimed the crown in Mulhall was dominant in the finals, winning His second place finish in 1975 helped the Blue Streaks win the team championship and he wrapped up his career with 46 wins against just 8 losses. Jim Weir, 1976, 1977, and 1978 Weir was a three-time Division III national champion. He won the title in 1976 at 158 pounds and the 1977 and 1978 titles at 167. He was also twice a Division I All-American. Over the course of his career, he produced a then school record 98 wins, captured four NCIT titles and three PAC crowns.

7 NCAA Champions Dan Stefancin, 1981 Stefancin was a 1981 NCAA Division III national champion at 118 pounds. He had the honor of winning his title in front of a friendly crowd, ads John Carroll hosted the 1981 Championships. After finishing 7 th in 1979, Stefancin finished his career on top with a 9-5 decision in the finals. Also a twotime PAC champion a two-time NCIT champion, Stefancin graduated with 87 career wins. Chad Gross, 1981 Gross joined teammate Dan Stefancin as both won titles at home at the 1981 tournament. Gross captured the NCAA Division III championship as the #7 seed in at 134 pounds. Gross graduated as having wrestled more matches (114) than any other Blue Streak, and won 77 of those. Randy Viviani, 1982 After placing seventh in his junior season, Randy Viviani won the 1982 National title at 142 pounds. The two-time All-American completed his career with 69 victories, lettered four times, won three PAC crowns, and captained the squad twice. Nick D Angelo, 1983 A three-time All-American in wrestling as well as an All-American in football, Nick D Angelo won a national championship at 190 pounds in He also placed second in 1984 and third in A twotime PAC champion, 1994 inductee D Angelo won 77 times over the course of his career. Mike Gillmor, 1992 Mike Gillmor won the 1992 NCAA title at 142 lbs. A winner by a 2-0 score, Gillmor was the first John Carroll NCAA Champion in almost ten years. He also placed third at the 1993 championships at 150 pounds. Gillmor won 85 matches in his career, was a two-time OAC champion, and was a three-time national qualifier. Rich Eslich, 1999 Eslich stands alone as the only John Carroll national champion to win his title by going undefeated for an entire season. two-time All-American at heavyweight, he won his Division III championship in 1999, completing the year with a record of A two-time OAC champion and 1999 OAC Most Valuable Wrestler, Eslich posted a record of 52-4 in his final two seasons.

8 NCAA Division I All-Americans From the first NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships held in 1974, up until the 1990 championships, the Division III National Champion at each weight class qualified to compete in the Division I National Tournament. John Carroll was represented at the NCAA Division I Championships on 14 occasions and 2 wrestlers earned Division I All-American honors. Mark Hawald A two-time Division III Champion at 134 lbs, Hawald competed at the Division I tournament in 1975 and At the 1975 Championships, he finished with a 2-2 record and failed to place. At the 1976 Championships, Hawald won 6 matches to place fifth in the country finish as an All-American. In his two NCAA Division I Championship appearances, Hawald finished with a total record of 8 wins and 4 losses NCAA Division I Championships - 5th Place, 134 lbs Championship Pigtail Won by decision over Mike Chinn (Oklahoma), 8-5 Championship Round 1 Won by decision over Tom Bauer (Navy), 8-5 Championship Round 2 Won by decision over Jim Hicks (Williams and Mary), 7-6 Championship Quarterfinals Lost by major decision to Mike Frick (Lehigh), 11-3 Consolation Round 2 Won by decision Joe Kittle (Oregon State), 8-4 Consolation Quarterfinals Won by decision over Frank Gonzales (UCLA), 5-3 Consolation Semifinals Lost by fall to Sam Komar (Indiana), 3:59 5th Place Match Won by decision over Kurt Mock (Kentucky), 2-1 Jim Weir As a three-time Division III Champion, Jim Weir was able to compete in three Division I tournaments. Weir followed his first championship at 158 lbs with a 6th place performance at the Division I Tournament where he finished with a 3-3 record. After moving up to 167 the following season, Weir was unable to repeat his performance as an All-American at the 1977 Division I tournament. Although his 3-2 record put him among the top 8 in his weight class, the NCAA did not start recognizing the seventh and eighth place finishers as All-Americans until In his senior season, Weir finished strong and cemented himself as the most decorated wrestler in John Carroll history. After winning his third Division III title, Weir went to the Division I Championships and finished in 4th place. He finished the tournament with 5 wins and 2 losses, including an overtime loss to the eventual champion from Oklahoma.
