Stk H A Bowling Green W L Buffalo W W Ohio L L UMass W W Kent State L L Miami L L Akron L L MAC ANNOUNCES NEW BOCA RATON & BAHAMAS BOWL GAMES The MAC announced the creation of newly created bowl games in Boca Raton, Florida and Nassau, Bahamas for a six-year period ( ). The Boca Raton Bowl and Bahamas Bowl are the start of a series of planned bowl announcements over the next several weeks and the centerpiece of a joint agreement between several FBS conferences. The MAC will play the American Athletic Conference and Conference USA in each bowl game in 2014 and With further announcements coming later this month, the MAC will have created two new primary appearances on an annual basis for the next six years. Starting in the 2014 college football season, the MAC will have a minimum five guaranteed bowl opportunities. Bahamas Bowl (vs. C-USA) HUSKIES EXTEND NATION S LONGEST HOME WINNING STREAK The Huskies win over Akron last Saturday in front of a sellout crowd of 23,595 witnessed Northern Illinois extend its current home winning streak to 23 games, the longest current streak in the nation. Northern Illinois also set a new MAC record for consecutive home wins, breaking the mark set by former-member Marshall (22 games, ). JORDAN LYNCH ONE OF TEN FBS QBS TO JOIN 3,000/4,000 CLUB Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch became only the tenth player in FBS history to run for more than 3,000 yards and pass for more than 4,000 yards in his college career. Lynch has 3,039 career rushing yards and 4,650 career passing yards. Lynch has the fewest career starts (20) of any player to accomplish the 3,000/4,000 mark. MAC Storylines Northern Illinois (6-0) is ranked No. 23 in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll and the USA Today Coaches Poll. Ball State improved to 6-1 overall, 3-0 in the MAC, with a win over Kent State. The Cardinals win gave head coach Pete Lembo his 100th career head coaching victory. Northern Illinois and Ball State are already bowl eligible. The MAC has three programs with five wins or more and five programs with four wins or more: Northern Illinois (6-0); Ball State (6-1) and Bowling Green (5-2) have a combined 17-3 record. Buffalo improved to 4-2 overall, 2-0 in Conference play, with a 33-0 win at Western Michigan. Buffalo recorded its first road shutout since 1965 and the Bulls are 2-0 to begin MAC play for the first time in program history. 2 HUSKES EXTEND NATION S LONGEST WINNING STREAK; SET MAC RECORD...The 23rd ranked Northern Illinois Huskies earned their 23rd consecutive Huskie Stadium victory on Saturday, defeating Akron before a Homecoming, sellout crowd of 23,595. The win set a new MAC record for consecutive home victories, breaking a tie with Marshall ( ). Northern Illinois improved to 6-0 with the victory, 2-0 in the MAC, while Akron dropped to 1-6, 0-3 in a game effort that stretched Northern Illinois to its limits. The Huskies held Akron to just six points after the first quarter and 372 total yards in the game, the lowest total by a Huskie opponent this season. The Northern Illinois defense combined for nine pass breakups in the contest. Jordan Lynch was 16-of-35 through the air for 220 yards and a touchdown, an had 15 carries for 83 yards and a score. Cameron Stingily had 21 carries for 80 yards and a touchdown, Tommylee Lewis finished with six receptions for 58 yards. Akron struck first with a nine-play, 71-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead. Jawon Chisholm finished off the drive with a touchdown from a yard out giving Akron the lead four minutes into the contest. It took Northern Illinois less than a minute to answer, going 74 yards in six plays, using just 59 seconds off the clock. Jordan Lynch capped the Northern Illinois drive with an 18-yard touchdown run as the Huskies evened the contest, 7-7. Northern Illinois took its first lead of the day on a 42-yard field goal by junior Tyler Wedel. The field goal capped an eight-play, 41-yard drive for the Huskies. Northern Illinois increased its lead to 10 with 4:52 left in the first quarter on a 25- yard pass connection from Lynch to sophomore tight end Desroy Maxwell. A pair of long pass receptions helped Akron pull back within three, Pohl connected with Jerrod Dillard for 42 yards and L.T. Smith for 21 yards. Three plays later Chisholm dove over the pile for his second score of the day as Akron cut into the Northern Illinois lead. On its first possession of the second half, Northern Illinois increased its lead back to 10. Cameron Stingily finished the drive with a nine-yard touchdown run to give the Huskies a lead. Senior safety Jimmie Ward came up with the only turnover of the game, intercepting a Pohl pass along the sideline at the Akron 30-yard line. It was the fourth consecutive game with an interception for Ward. The Huskies got down to the Akron three, but were forced to settle for a field goal from 21 yards out by Wedel to take a lead with 11:19 to play in the fourth. With 5:27 left, Akron cashed in an 18-play, 75-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Pohl to Tyrell Goodman to trim the Huskie lead, MAC WITH THREE AMONG TOP TEN ACTIVE CAREER 100-YARD RUSHING LEADERS, WITH NIU S JORDAN LYNCH RANKED FIRST The MAC features three of the top ten active career 100-yard rushing leaders among FBS college football programs. Northern Illinois senior quarterback Jordan Lynch leads the nation with 16 career 100-yard rushing games, while Toledo s David Fluellen is ranked tied for seventh (12 games) and Akron s Jawon Chisholm is tied for tenth (10 games) in the nation in career 100-yard rushing games. Johnson helped the Falcons battle back from an early 14-3 deficit and his two-yard touchdown run in the third quarter brought Bowling Green to within one point in the fourth quarter. Colby Way, Defensive Player of the Week; Buffalo, Senior, Defensive End Senior defensive end Colby Way (State College, Pa.) had a career-high three sacks to lead a defensive unit to a 33-0 win at Western Michigan. The shutout was the second ever shutout of a MAC opponent and the first road shutout for the program since Way had four total tackles in the game, but it was his timely sacks that played a huge part in the Bulls shutout. Zach Paul, Special Teams Player of Week; Akron, Sophomore, Punter Sophomore punter Zach Paul (Broadview Heights, Ohio) had nine punts for an average of 45.7 yards (411 total yards) in the Zips loss at No. 23 Northern Illinois on Saturday. His longest punt of the day went 60 yards. Two of his attempts resulted in a touchback and two others landed inside the 20- yard line. West Division Willie Snead, Offensive Player of the Week Ball State, Junior, Wide Receiver Junior wide receiver Willie Snead (Belle Glade, Fla.) had 10 catches for 152 yards and two touchdowns in Ball State s win over Kent State. Snead s game-winning touchdown catch with 1:29 to play in the game was a seven yard reception from quarterback Keith Wenning. Snead has now managed 100 or more yards receiving in four straight games. Kavon Frazier, Defensive Player of the Week; Central Michigan, Sophomore, Safety Sophomore safety Kavon Frazier (Grand Rapids, Mich.) forced two critical, drive-halting turnovers in Central Michigan s win at Ohio. In the second quarter, with the Bobcats in Central Michigan territory, Frazier forced a fumble of receiver Matt Waters, stopping a 12-play drive. On Ohio s next possession, he intercepted quarterback Tyler Tettleton and returned the pick 23 yards. Kyle Schmidt, Special Teams Player of the Week; Ball State, Freshman, Punter Freshman punter Kyle Schmidt (Chesterton, Ind.) punted four times for 183 yards and a 45.8 average in Ball State s win over Kent State. Schmidt pinned the Golden Flashes inside the 20-yard line twice and had a game long punt of 51 yards.

Licata finished 11-for-21 for 124 and three scores. Central Michigan RB Saylor Lavallii set career highs in rushing attempts (26) and rushing yards (184) for the second consecutive week, helping the Chippewas to a road win at Ohio. Saylor had three runs of 30 yards or more. Eastern Michigan RB Bronson Hill racked up 234 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns in a loss at Army. Hill rushed 20 times for 143 yards and four catches for a career-best 91 yards. Western Michigan WR Corey Davis led with eight catches for 92 yards in a loss to Buffalo. It was the fifth time this season the freshman has led the Broncos in receiving. Kent State WR Chris Humphrey had career-highs of nine catches and 106 receiving yards and one touchdown in a loss at Ball State. UMass TE Rob Blanchflower hauled in five receptions for 98 yards and a touchdown in UMass win over Miami. DEFENSE Northern Illinois DT Ken Bishop recorded six tackles and one tackle for loss in a win over Akron. Bishop led a defense that limited Akron to 372 total yards and the 110 rushing yards were the lowest by an Northern Illinois opponent this year. Bowling Green LB Paul Swan had a game-high 11 tackles as the Falcons shut out Mississippi State in the second half, almost pulling off a road upset Saturday in a loss. Swan had eight solo tackles and the Bowling Green defense held the Bulldogs to only 129 yards of offense after halftime. Akron LB Jatavis Brown recorded a career-high 15 tackles in the Zips loss at No. 23 Northern Illinois. Brown also had 1.5 tackles for loss for a combined six yards and one sack. Miami LB Jay Mastin had a career and game-high 14 tackles in a loss at UMass. Western Michigan S Justin Currie matched a career high with 15 tackles in a 33-0 loss to Buffalo. Ball State DT Nathan Ollie had eight tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss in the Cardinals win over the Golden Flashes. Ollie and the Cardinals defense tallied six tackles for loss, recovered one fumble and added two interceptions. SPECIAL TEAMS Western Michigan P J. Schroeder amassed seven punts vs. Buffalo for an average of 40.3 yards per punt. He had a long of 56 yards with one inside the 20 yard line. Buffalo K Patrick Clarke was 2-for-2 on field goal attempts, including a career-long 51-yarder in Buffalo s 33-0 win at Western Michigan. He added a 51-yard field goal in the third quarter. Northern Illinois LB Boomer Mays leaped to block Akron kicker Robert Stein s final PAT attempt and knocked it down, securing the first blocked kick of his career and enabling Northern Illinois to hold onto a seven-point lead in its win over the Zips. Bowling Green P Brian Schmiedebusch only punted twice Saturday in a loss at Mississippi State. His first punt went 48 yards and pinned Mississippi State at the 6-yard line and his second punt traveled 49 yards and was downed at the 1-yard line.

4 CHIPPEWAS KNOCK OFF OHIO, 26-23, IN ROAD THRILLER...Redshirt freshman quarterback Cooper Rush threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Courtney Williams with 22 seconds remaining and the Chippewa defense held on to earn Central Michigan a thrilling road victory over MAC East favorite Ohio on Saturday at Peden Stadium in Athens. BUFFALO POSTS FIRST ROAD SHUTOUT SINCE Buffalo won its fourth straight game in convincing fashion, shutting out Western Michigan, 33-0, at Waldo Stadium on Saturday. It was just the second time the Bulls blanked a MAC opponent and it was first road shutout by Buffalo since Buffalo improved to 4-2 overall and to 2-0 in MAC play for the first time ever. Ohio (4-2, 1-1) went ahead, 23-19, on a one-yard rush by Ryan Boykin, giving Central Michigan the ball with 4:35 on the clock. However, the Chippewas couldn t gain a first down and were forced to punt. Ohio returner Travis Carrie muffed the kick and redshirt freshman linebacker Joe Bacci recovered the ball at the Bobcats 39-yard line. Seven plays later, Central Michigan was in the end zone, securing the Chippewas their second straight MAC win. Rush finished with 224 yards passing and three touchdowns with 20 completions to 10 different receivers. Sophomore running back Saylor Lavallii set a career high in rushing for the second consecutive week, running for 184 yards on 26 carries. In the first half, he gained yards in chunks, rushing for 131 yards on just 13 carries. Central Michigan (3-4, 2-1) finished with a total of 208 yards rushing against an Ohio defense that entered the game allowing only an average of 126 per game. After Ohio opened the scoring with a field goal, Central Michigan got on the board late in the first quarter when Rush lofted a perfect pass into the corner of the end zone to senior tight end Connor Odykirk for a 17-yard touchdown. The Chippewa defense thwarted three consecutive Ohio drives in the second quarter with turnovers, beginning with a forced fumble of Matt Waters by sophomore safety Kavon Frazier, then recording his third interception of the season and returning it 23 yards. Ohio scored back-to-back touchdowns at the end of third quarter and early in the fourth quarter off two touchdown passes by Tettleton to take the lead, its first of the game, at The Chippewas responded to take back the advantage with a nineplay, 75-yard drive, capped off by a Rush seven-yard pass to Lavallii. The extra point was blocked, making the game, BALL STATE BOWL ELIGIBLE WITH WIN OVER KENT STATE...Ball State football team became bowl eligible for the third straight season under the direction of third-year head coach Pete Lembo, after the Cardinals defeated Kent State The Cardinals improved to 6-1 on the season and remain undefeated in the MAC with a 3-0 record. Kent State falls to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in league action. The win marked Lembo s 100th career victory and came on a Keith Wenning to Willie Snead 7-yard touchdown pass with 1:29 left in the contest. After uncharacteristically early turnovers by Ball State and stalwart defensive efforts by both teams caused the game to be tied at 7-7 at the half, the Cardinals rallied for 13 third quarter points to take a lead as the third quarter neared an end. In the third quarter, Wenning threw a two-yard touchdown pass wide receiver Jordan Williams to give Ball State its first 14-7 lead of the game. Kent State answered back on its ensuing possession tying the contest for the second time, After a Jeffery Garrett interception to give the Cardinals the ball back, Wenning connected on a 25-yard pass to Jamill Smith at the 2:53 mark of the third quarter to give Ball State the lead. Kent State responded early in the fourth quarter to take a lead, and less than two minutes later, the Golden Flashes scored again on a 21-yard field goal and led with 7:14 to play. With 3:12 left in the game and down by four, Ball State put together a five-play, 57-yard drive which resulted in a seven-yard touchdown pass from Wenning to Snead earning the Cardinals the victory. The Buffalo defense held the Broncos to just 202 yards of total offense, including only 38 yards rushing. Colby Way led the defensive attack with a career-high three sacks. The defense forced four turnovers, including two interceptions. Khalil Mack had six tackles, 1.5 for loss, a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. The Bulls rushed for a season-high 290 yards in the game. Branden Oliver ran for 128 yards on 19 carries for his school-record 14th career 100-yard game. Despite the lopsided score, it was a close game throughout the first half. The Bulls marched right down the field on their opening possession and Devin Campbell punched it in from one-yard out. Patrick Clarke s extra point was blocked and the Bulls led 6-0. However, the Buffalo offense stalled on several occasion in the first half and the score would remain 6-0 at the half. The Bulls scored 17 points in the third quarter to break the game open. Clarke started the second-half scoring with a career-long 51- yard field goal. Mack forced a fumble that Adam Redden recovered on the Broncos ensuing possession. Buffalo capitalized as Joe Licata connected with Mason Schreck on a two-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 16-0 just over six minutes into the third quarter. Following a three-and-out by Western Michigan, Buffalo marched 53 yards in five plays. Licata found Free Lee along the sideline and he tip-toed into the endzone to put the Bulls ahead, Licata tossed his third touchdown of the game early in the fourth quarter when he found Alex Neutz in the corner of the endzone from two yards out. Licata finished with 124 total passing yards to seven different receivers. Lee had a team-high four catches for 88 yards and a touchdown. This was just the second Buffalo shut out of a MAC foe (44-0 win over Ohio in 2001). The last shutout on the road was a 22-0 win at Delaware in UMASS GETS FIRST WIN, 17-10, OVER MIAMI...Sophomore A.J. Doyle threw for 249 yards and two touchdowns to lead Massachusetts to a win over Miami at Gillette Stadium. UMass (1-5, 1-0 MAC) established season-highs with 376 yards of total offense and 23 first downs. Sophomore Jamal Wilson had 23 carries for 82 yards. Senior Rob Blanchflower led UMass with five catches for 98 yards and touchdown. The Minutemen defense continued it s strong play by forcing three turnovers, with two interceptions by sophomore Khary Bailey- Smith and one by senior Devin Brown. Redshirt junior Stanley Andre led all players with a career-high 14 tackles. Miami (0-6, 0-2) had 290 yards of offense and was just 1-of-11 on third down. Austin Boucher threw for 166 yards and one score. Doyle found sophomore Elgin Long on a scramble for a 22-yard strike to go ahead 7-0 at the midway point of the first quarter. Miami answered with a 64-yard drive that saw Boucher connect with Steve Marck for a 13-yard pass to tie the game up at 7-7. Miami took their only lead of the game at 10-7 when Kaleb Patterson connected on a season-long 45-yard field goal with 8:09 left. UMass regained the lead with a methodical nine-play, 81-yard drive that culminated in a 47-yard Doyle pass to Blanchflower. The ball was tipped and almost intercepted near the 20-yard line, but Blanchflower caught the ball and scampered for the longest reception of his career.

5 FALCONS FALL AT MISSISSIPPI STATE...Bowling Green fell to 5-2 on the season following a hard-fought loss at the hands of Mississippi State at Davis Wade Stadium. Mississippi State opened the scoring on with an opening-drive touchdown. The Bulldogs traveled 75 yards over 5:02 of play, eventually getting on the board with a one-yard rush from LaDarius Perkins on second-and-goal. Bowling Green stalled on its opening drive, but BooBoo Gates intercepted a Dak Prescott pass on the Bulldogs ensuing drive. Aaron Foster tipped the ball before Gates picked it off at the Mississippi State 47-yard line and returned it 34 yards down to the Bulldogs 13-yard line. The Falcons would settle for a 35-yard Tyler Tate field goal to cut the deficit to 7-3. Mississippi State extended its lead quickly, however, as Prescott scored on the Bulldogs next possession. The quarterback used a play fake in the backfield to trick the Falcons defense before rushing it in from 75 yards out on the first play of the drive. Bowling Green orchestrated a 96-yard touchdown drive that was capped off by a seven-yard rush from Andre Givens. The Falcons used a 29-yard rush from Travis Greene and a 28-yard reception from quarterback Matt Johnson to tight end Tyler Beck on consecutive plays prior to Givens carry. Mississippi State once again countered with a score, as the Bulldogs drove 75 yards for the second time on the night. Dak Prescott topped off the scoring drive with a 10-yard quarterback keeper, pushing Mississippi State s advantage to The Falcons, with only 1:04 remaining in the half, then traveled 48 yards before Tyler Tate hit a 45-yard field goal as time expired, which tied a career long for Tate, and made the score In the second half, a two-yard rushing touchdown from Matt Johnson cut the Bulldogs deficit, On a drive that covered 76 yards over 3:15 of play, the Falcons were boosted by a pair of Ryan Burbrink completions. The first of which went for 17 yards and the latter went for 24. NORTHERN ILLINOIS BUSTS THE BCS IN 2012 Northern Illinois became the first MAC program to receive an invitation to a BCS Bowl game as the Huskies suffered a loss to Florida State in the Discover Orange Bowl on Jan. 1, The 2013 Discover Orange bowl between Northern Illinois and Florida State was successful from a competitive, ratings and attendance perspective. The Huskies trailed the Seminoles entering the fourth quarter and the final was the closest Discover Orange Bowl in three years. The game had over 10.5 million viewers and a 7.1 rating as viewership was up 47% and ratings 34% from the previous year. Also, the attendance for the Discover Orange Bowl was 72,023, the largest crowd since The Huskies earned the program s second consecutive MAC Championship with a thrilling double overtime win over Kent State in the Marathon MAC Championship Game and entered bowl selection Sunday with a BCS No. 15 ranking higher than two AQ conferences--big Ten (No. 16 Nebraska) and Big East (No. 21 Louisville). At the end of the 2012 bowl season, Northern Illinois ranked No. 22 in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll, No. 24 in the USA Today Poll. MAC HOPES TO BUILD OFF OF 2012 SUCCESS 2012 was a banner season for the conference as the MAC witnessed its first BCS Bowl invitation with Northern Illinois and throughout the season, four different MAC programs were ranked nationally either in the BCS Standings, Associated Press Top 25 Poll or USA Today Coaches Poll Northern Illinois, Kent State, Toledo and Ohio. The MAC won a conference record 16 regular season games against non-conference FBS programs last season including eight wins against AQ programs Penn State, Iowa and Indiana from the Big Ten; Cincinnati, Rutgers, South Florida and UConn from the Big East; and Kansas from the Big 12. Six teams from the MAC had eight wins or more in 2012 for the first time in MAC history. Those six teams (Northern Illinois 12-2, Kent State 11-3, Ball State 9-4, Toledo 9-4, Ohio 9-4 and Bowling Green 8-5) had a combined (.725) record. Bowling Green would go on to drive the ball to their own 45-yard line, but failed to convert on fourth down. Alongside his rushing touchdown, Matt Johnson connected on 20 of his 34 passes for 224 yards. Travis Greene led the rushing attack with 99 yards on 15 carries. Jared Cohen hauled in five receptions for 51 yards, and Ryan Burbrink gained 66 yards on four catches. EAGLES CLIPPED BY ARMY, Eastern Michiga lost to Army at Michie Stadium. The Eagles (1-5, 0-2 MAC) held the early edge, but the Army (3-4) ground attack proved to be too much for the Green and White. Army outgained Eastern Michigan, , due in large part to 513 yards on the ground. Junior running back Terry Baggett had a career day, rushing for an Army record 304 yards on 18 carries, including four touchdowns. Bronson Hill was the bright spot for the Eastern Michigan offense, racking up 232 total yards. The junior running back ran 20 times for 143 yards while also catching four passes for 91 yards. Through the air, Tyler Benz went 17-of-26 with 223 passing yards and two touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball Hunter Matt led all Eagles with 13 tackles. The dynamic duo of Benz and Hill has now combined for 920 yards and nine touchdowns in the past two games against the Black Knights. Last season versus Army, Oct. 20, 2012, Benz threw 19- of-31 for 369 yards and five touchdowns, including one to Hill. Meanwhile, Hill ran for 185 yards and one touchdown on the ground in the Eagles win at Rynearson Stadium. Kent State became the first team in the MAC East to go 8-0 since the 2003 season. Kent State had a 10-game winning streak entering the Marathon MAC Football Championship game and 11 total wins last year established a new single-season record in school history. Nix rankes 14th in the MAC for career tackles for loss (52) and has been named First Team All-MAC in each of his first three years. Nix is looking to join Brian McClure (Bowling Green, ), Dave Zastudil (Ohio, ) and Barry Church (Toledo, ) as MAC players named to four consecutive First Team All-MAC selections at the same, single position. Paul Haynes, Kent State: Named Kent State head coach on Dec. 18, 2012 as the programs 21st head football coach. Haynes, 43, spent last season as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Arkansas. Haynes spent the previous seven seasons at Ohio State ( ) as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach in 2011 and defensive back coach from Haynes also served at Kent State in 1999 as defensive backs and was promoted to assistant head coach and safeties coach in 2000 under then head coach Dean Pees. Haynes walked on at Kent State in 1987 and played four years for the Golden Flashes ( ) and ended his career with 440 tackles, seventh-best in school history. Rod Carey, Northern Illinois: Carey was named Northern Illinois head coach on Dec. 2, 2012 as the program s 22nd head football coach, two days after Dave Doeren left for North Carolina State. Carey was promoted from offensive coordinator and coached the Huskies in the Discover Orange Bowl. In his second season at Northern Illinois, Carey began 2012 as offensive line coach and assumed offensive coordinator duties after the first game of the year when Mike Dunbar left the team for health reasons. Carey joined the Huskies after three seasons as offensive line coach at North Dakota ( ) and one year at Illinois State (2007). Carey served six years as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Wisconsin-Stout ( ). P.J. Fleck, Western Michigan: Fleck was named Western Michigan head coach on Dec. 18, 2012 as the programs 15th head coach. Fleck joins the Broncos after serving as wide receivers coach last season with Tampa Bay. He was a graduate assistant at Ohio State (2006), coached three seasons at Northern Illinois ( ) as wide receivers coach then joined Rutgers as wide receivers coach for two seasons ( ). NIU SETS SCHOOL RECORD WITH 12 WIN SEASON The Northern Illinois Huskies double-overtime win over Kent State in the Marathon MAC Championship game was a program record 12th win in 2012, which set a new school record for most wins in a single season. MAC VS. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS TOP 25 The MAC opens the 2013 football season with a slate of contests against the top ranked teams in college football. In the preseason AP Top 25 football poll, the MAC will face seven of the Top 25 ranked programs this season. Opening weekend No. 2 ranked Ohio State will host Buffalo, No. 10 ranked Florida will host Toledo, No. 17 ranked Michigan will host Central Michigan and No. 23 ranked Wisconsin will host UMass on Saturday, Aug. 31. MAC ANNOUNCES CREATION OF CAMELLIA BOWL MAC vs. SUN BELT MATCHUP TO BEGIN IN 2014 Earlier this month the MAC announced the creation of the Camellia Bowl, a newly created bowl game to begin in 2014, which will be based in Montgomery, Alabama, owned and operated by ESPN. The Camellia Bowl will feature a MAC bowl eligible football program to face a member of the Sun Belt Conference for the next six consecutive football seasons ( ) in a pre- Christmas game televised nationally by ESPN or ESPN2. The Mid-American Conference is proud to partner in the creation of the Camellia Bowl beginning with the 2014 season, said Dr. Jon Steinbrecher, Mid-American Conference Commissioner. The historic Cramton Bowl will be a great venue for our studentathletes and fans. Additionally, Montgomery s entertainment district will provide a fun and lively bowl experience for all involved. 8 LOOK AT MAC STARTING QUARTERBACKS Consistency at the quarterback position will be a key storyline among MAC programs this fall. This season nine programs will enter the season with returning starting quarterbacks from last season including Jordan Lynch (Northern Illinois), Keith Wenning (Ball State), Tyler Tettleton (Ohio), Terrance Owens (Toledo), Matt Schilz (Bowling Green), Tyler Benz (Eastern Michigan), Mike Wegzyn (UMass), Tyler Van Tubbergen (Western Michigan) and Joe Licata (Buffalo). Three-year starters include: Seniors Keith Wenning (Ball State), Tyler Tettleton (Ohio), Terrance Owens (Toledo) and Matt Schilz (Bowling Green). WINS OVER NON-CONFERENCE FBS OPPONENTS The MAC set the conference single season record with 16 wins over FBS non-conference opponents last season. Dating back to the 2000 season, the previous mark for MAC s number of wins vs. opponents from other FBS conferences was 14 regular season wins during the 2008 season. In 2013, the MAC already has nine wins vs. FBS opponents. Last year the MAC won 16 non-conference regular season games against opponents from the other FBS conferences and independents, including wins over Big Ten, Big East, Big 12, Conference USA, Mountain West, WAC and Independent opponents. Two-year starters include: Seniors Jordan Lynch (Northern Illinois) and Tyler Van Tubbergen; junior Tyler Benz (Eastern Michigan) and sophomores Mike Wegzyn (UMass) and Joe Licata (Buffalo). Only four programs will see a new starter under center -- Akron, Central Michigan, Kent State and Miami. Akron: Sophomore Kyle Pohl saw action in six games last year and was passing for 366 yards, five TDs and two interceptions. Pohl played the majority of the season finale at Toledo and completed 28-of-42 passes for 213 yards and two TDs. Ball State: Senior Keith Wenning returns for his third year as starter. Last season, Wenning was named Second Team All-MAC and was passing, with 3,095 yards and 24 TDs. Bowling Green: Sophomore Matt Johnson has assumed the starting spot from senior Matt Schilz. Last year Schilz was passing, 2,585 yards and 14 TDs. Buffalo: Sophomore Joe Licata earned the starting duties during spring. Licata appeared in nine games last year, including the final four games when the Bulls finished 3-1, and recorded passing, 1,045 yards and seven TDs. Central Michigan: Junior Cody Kater won the starting duties during training camp as CMU lost three-year starter Ryan Radcliff to graduation. After suffering an injury in the opener, Cooper Rush has taken over under center for the Chippewas. Eastern Michigan: Redshirt junior Tyler Benz will start his second season for the Eagles. Benz started the final nine games last season and was passing for 1,511 yards and 14 TDs. Kent State: Flashes lost three-year starter Spencer Keith to graduation and will turn to redshirt freshman Colin Reardon to lead the offense. UMass: Sophomore Mike Wegzyn and A.J. Doyle will see action this season. Wegzyn threw for 1,825 yards, six TDs last year. Miami: RedHawks lost four-year starter Zac Dysert to graduation and the NFL. Senior Austin Boucher takes over after serving as Dysert s backup for the last three seasons. Northern Illinois: Senior Jordan Lynch set school and conference records in his first year as a starter and was named MAC Offensive Player of the Year and First-Team All-MAC. Last season, Lynch was passing for 3,138 yards and 25 TDs. He also rushed for 1,815 yards and another 19 TDs. Ohio: Senior Tyler Tettleton will start his third season as starter. Last season, Tettleton was passing, 2,844 yards, 18 TDs. Toledo: Senior Terrance Owens will mark his second year as full-time starter of the Rockets. Last year, Owens was passing, with 2,707 yards and 14 TDs. Western Michigan: Senior Tyler Van Tubbergen will start his second year as starter. Last year he started six games for injured Alex Carder and was passing with 1,825 yards, six TDs. Two more MAC football coaches have been promoted to new opportunities within FBS. Northern Illinois head coach Dave Doeren was named head coach at North Carolina State and Kent State s Darrell Hazell was named head coach at Purdue. Doeren and Hazell have joined the lengthy list of former MAC head coaches currently at head coaching positions within FBS. There are 13 former head coaches from the MAC in a current FBS head coaching position including nearly half of the Big Ten (five total) and both coaches from the 2013 BCS Championship Game Alabama s Nick Saban (Toledo) and Notre Dame s Brian Kelly (Central Michigan).
