Alabama Crimson Tide (7-0, 0-2 SEC) Head Coach: Kristy Curry Career: (14) at ALABAMA: First Year Miss dropped a road contest at No. 8/8 Tennessee on Thursday (Jan. 9). The loss was the second consecutive for Ole Miss and its third loss in the last four games, dating back to non-conference action. Although two of losses came at the hands of top 10 opponents in Baylor and Tennessee. Rebels are head to Alabama in search of their first SEC win this season and their first SEC road win since defeating Florida, 88-81, in Gainesville last season. The Rebels last won in Tuscaloosa during the season, although the all-time series is tied in games played in Tuscaloosa. the first time since a loss to Georgia last season, Ole Miss had no player in double figures against Tennessee. Additionally, the Tennessee game snapped a streak of give consecutive games with at least one Rebel player with 20+ points as well as a streak of five straight games with a double-double. Miss moved to 9-3 when scoring at least 70 points. The Rebels have reached the 70-point mark on 12 occasions this season and have scored 70+ points in each of the last 11 games. The last game Ole Miss failed to reach 70 points in was in a loss at Washington State at the Rainbow Wahine Classic. her three assists against Tennessee, Valencia McFarland picked up her 100th assist of the season. For the season, she has 101 and has reached the 100 assists mark in each of her four years at Ole Miss. She is 37 assists away from her 400th career assist - one of five players with at least 400 career assists. Our search to find the right head coach took us to all corners of the country as we attracted top coaches from the basketball community. Coach Insell has coaching in his veins and was destined to be a head coach from day one. Coach Insell is viewed by many in college athletics as the top assistant coach in the country and his expertise in game planning, strategy, recruiting, and the student-athlete experience has been well chronicled. Being part of a re-building job at the University of Kentucky has enabled Coach Insell to gain the necessary requirements needed of our new staff as we re-capture the legacy that is Lady Rebel Basketball. He is the perfect fit to make this happen and we are excited he is joining our team. Ross Bjork, Ole Miss Athletics Director Matt Insell was named the eighth head coach of the Ole Miss women s basketball team on March 28, Insell spent the last five seasons as the top assistant with the nationally-ranked University of Kentucky women s basketball program. Insell helped guide Kentucky to four 20-win seasons and four trips to the NCAA Tournament in his time in Lexington. The Wildcats have ended the last four seasons ranked in the top-25 and were ranked as high as No. 7 during the season. Insell, who was responsible for the guards while also having recruiting and player development duties, and helped UK ink three top-10 recruiting classes and seven McDonald s All-Americans. I m very excited to be the new women s basketball coach at the University of Mississippi, Insell said. This is an opportunity I ve had my eye on for a long time and I just can t put into words how excited I am to be leading this team. I promise you this - we are going to put a team on the floor that is going to make the Rebel Nation very happy. Insell was instrumental in helping turn Kentucky into a national power in women s basketball. Picked to finish 11th in the SEC during the season, Kentucky made an Elite Eight run that year and reached the Elite Eight in three of the last four seasons. During his time at Kentucky, Insell helped develop guard A dia Mathies, a twotime SEC Player of the Year and All-America candidate, and Bria Goss who was named SEC Freshman of the Year. He made the decision when he graduated high school to forgo playing collegiate basketball and concentrate on becoming a Division I head coach. I am very excited about the journey he has made. I don t know of a better place to build his legacy than the University of Mississippi. Matt is a fantastic fit for the program. Deb and I, along with our entire family, are very proud of him. Rick Insell, Head Women s Basketball Coach, Middle Tennessee State Ole Miss made a great decision when they hired Matt Insell. Matt is an excellent college basketball coach. I believe you have to be strong in many areas to be a quality college basketball coach. You can t be one dimensional. Matt is an outstanding recruiter, a tireless worker in the area of player development and very knowledgeable from an X and O standpoint. He always had a great feel regarding in-game adjustments that will prove valuable to him as a head coach. More important than any of that to me was his friendship to our family. He is like a member of our family. He was incredibly loyal to the Kentucky program, and we benefitted greatly from his contributions over the past five years. 5 Ole Miss vs. Alabama Notables -This will be the 54th meeting between Ole Miss and Alabama. The Rebels own a series advantage but have dropped each of the last two meetings between the teams. In games played in Tuscaloosa, the series is deadlocked at The last time Ole Miss won on Alabama s home floor was during the season. -Sunday s game will serve as a Homecoming of sorts for Rebel players Tia Faleru and Monique Jackson, who both hail from Alabama. Faleru is a native of Ozark, while Jackson hails from Phenix City. Additionally, Director of Operations Eric White is from Boaz, Ala., and athletic trainer Meredith Pendergast is also from Wetumpka, Ala. -The Alabama game will be a matchup of two coaching staffs in their first years at their respective schools. Alabama head coach Kristy Curry and her staff are in their first year, as are Ole Miss head coach Matt Insell and his staff. Curry is new to the SEC as she came to Alabama from Texas Tech out of the Big 12. A Win Would -Give Ole Miss its first SEC win since defeating Mississippi State, 65-51, last season and snap a two-game skid against the Crimson Tide. A win would also be Ole Miss first SEC road win since defeating Florida in Gainesville last season. A Loss Would -Move the Rebels to 0-3 in SEC action and extend the Rebels SEC losing streak to eight games, dating back to last season. Scouting Alabama Alabama enters Sunday s game with a week of rest after falling to Texas A&M, 73-58, on January 5. The win dropped the Crimson Tide to 7-8, 0-2 in SEC action. Shafontaye Myers leads the Alabama offense and is averaging 14.9 points per game. Myers is joined in double figures by Daisha Simmons and Ashley Williams who are averaging 14.3 and 10.9 points, respectively. Simmons and Williams lead the way on the glass averaging 5.9 and 5.8 rebounds per game. As a team, Alabama is avenging 67.2 points per game and 38.6 rebounds per game. Alabama faced several ranked opponents in non-conference action, taking on Nebraska and Duke on the road. Head coach Kristy Curry is in her first year at Alabama. Valenica McFarland Need For Points 145 1,500 Rebounds Steals Assists About Ole Miss Ole Miss enters the Alabama game with a 9-7, 0-2 SEC record after dropping a road contest at No. 8/8 Tennessee on Thursday (Jan. 9). The loss was second consecutive for Ole Miss and its third loss in the last four outings. Tia Faleru and Valencia McFarland continue to lead the way for the Rebels each averaging 15.5 points per game. Diara Moore is also in double-figures with 11.8 points per game. Faleru continues to clean the glass for the Rebels pulling down an SEC-best 9.9 rebounds per game. Danielle McCray also helps on the glass to the tune of 5.6 rebounds per game, as Ole Miss second-leading rebounder. As a team the Rebels are averaging 76.1 points per game and 45.2 rebounds per game. Up Next Ole Miss will return to Tad Smith Coliseum on Thursday (Jan. 16) when they host Vanderbilt. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. (CT). Last Time Out vs. Tennessee The Ole Miss women s basketball team came up short in a road loss to No. 8/8 Tennessee on Thursday night. Ole Miss Shequila Joseph, Diara Moore, Gracie Frizzell and Amber Singletary each had nine points while Tia Faleru led the way with nine rebounds to go along with eight points. The Rebels came out the locker room fired up and scored the first two buckets of the half, forcing the Lady Volunteers to call a timeout less than a minute into the half. Danielle McCray gave Ole Miss (9-7, 0-2 SEC) a huge lift to open the second half. After going scoreless in the first half, she had six of Ole Miss first eight points of the second half but the Rebels couldn t find a way to stop Tennessee (12-2, 2-1 SEC), dropping their third game in the last four outings. Tennessee Inside Game To Much For Rebels Ole Miss was outmanned on the inside against the No. 8/8 Lady Vols in its last outing, but the Rebels did battle with the Vols in the second half. After scoring just 29 points in the first half, Ole Miss scored 41 in the second and was within eight points of the home team, who scored just 49 points in the second half. Ole Miss becomes one of just four opponents to score 70 or more on the Lady Volunteers this season. Ole Miss Bench Steps Up in Second Half vs. Tennessee Rebel reserves Tianah Alvarado and Amber Singletary made some noise in the second half against Tennessee. Alvarado, seeing action in just her fifth game all year, scored a career-best eight points in seven minutes, including nailing two triples, while Singletary drained three triples and added three assists in just eight minutes. Ole Miss bench scored 30 of its 70 points in the contest. I Smell Victory Sunday s matchup is one of foes both looking for an SEC victory. The Rebels are looking to snap their current seven-game SEC losing streak and pick up a SEC road win for the first time since a win over Florida in Gainesville last season. Singletary Droppin Threes Junior Amber Singletary had a pretty good night from long range against Tennessee. The Baltimore, Md., native drained three triples which is a new season high and was her third game with multiple three pointers this season. Can I Get A Steal? Lady Vols Become First Opponent To Score 90+ With their 94 points, the Lady Vols became the first opponent to score 90 or more points on the Rebels this season. The last time Ole Miss had an opponent score 90+ points was in a loss to Arkansas last season. Last season, the Rebels had three opponents score 90 or more. Rebounding Woes For just the fourth time this season, the Rebels were held to 40 or fewer rebounds against Tennessee. The Lady Vols joined Baylor as the only teams to grab 50 or more rebounds against the Rebels. Ole Miss dropped the battle of the boards for just the sixth time this season and fell by double figures for the just the second time all year. No Players in Double Figures is No Good For the first time this season the Rebels failed to have a player in double figures. The last time this happened was against Georgia during the season. 7 McFarland s Double-Figure Scoring Streak Snapped With just eight points against Tennessee, Valencia McFarland has her six-game double-figure scoring streak snapped. The six games was her longest scoring streak of the season. For her career, she has reached double figures in 74 games and had a careerbest streak of nine games in double-figures to close the season. It s Raining Threes There were quite a few three-pointers against Missouri. The Rebels and Tigers combined for 26 three-pointers in the SEC opener. Missouri nailed a whopping 15 triples while the Rebels added 11. Hittin The Road Thursday s game against Tennessee was the first of a two-game road swing for Ole Miss. Ole Miss hasn t really played that many true road games and has a 2-3 record in away games, with losses at Hawai i, Baylor and Tennessee and wins over South Alabama and Tulane. Ole Miss is looking for its first SEC road win since Jan. 24, 2012 when they defeated Florida, in Gainesville. The Rebels haven t won more than one SEC road game since the season when they won at Florida and at Arkansas. The last time Ole Miss had more than two SEC road wins was in when they won five road games. 70 Is the Magic Number When the Rebels can get to 70 points good things happen. This season, Ole Miss is 9-3 when they score 70 or more points. The Rebels have scored 70 or more 11 times and have scored 80 or more on four occasions, including a season-high 99 points against Austin Peay. The last time Ole Miss failed to reach 70 points was against Washington State when they scored 65 points. Conversely, the Rebels record is 0-4 when they fail to score at least 70 points. The Rebels recorded a season low in points with 56 in a loss to West Virginia. Double-Digit Scorers Everywhere Ole Miss had its nine-game double-figure scorers streak snapped when they had no double-figure scorers against Tennessee. Ole Miss is 9-4 with losses coming against Central Arkansas, Baylor, Missouri and Tennessee when they have at least three in double-figures. Nine of Ole Miss 12 players have scored in double figures at least once this season with Valencia McFarland leading the way with 12 games in double figures. McFarland and Moore Go For 20 Seniors Valencia McFarland and Diara Moore both posted games of 20+ in Ole Miss win over Austin Peay. McFarland posted a game-high 22 points while Moore added 20 points. McFarland leads all Ole Miss active players with 18 career games of 20+. The Austin Peay game marked the first time the Rebels have had two 20+ scorers in the same game this season. So Close to the Century Mark Ole Miss 99 points against Austin Peay was one shy of the century mark. The last time Ole Miss scored 100 points was during the season when they scored 101 points in a win over Winston-Salem State. Ole Miss 99 points marked the second time this season the Rebels have scored over 90 points. Ole Miss scored 96 in a win over Southeastern Louisiana. Rebel Double-Double Means Trouble For Opponents The Rebels are quite successful when they can get at least one double. Ole Miss, who has had at least one player record a double-double in five of its last six games, is 6-4 when at least one player records a doubledouble. Against No. 9/9 Baylor, the Rebels had two double-doubles as Valencia McFarland and Tia Faleru both posted double-doubles. For the season, the Rebels have posted a double-double in 10 of its 16 games. Tia Faleru leads the way with eight double-doubles this season and has posted a double-double in three of her last four games. Her eight double-doubles ranks her 21st nationally. McFarland Flirts with Triple Double Against Baylor Senior point guard Valencia McFarland flirted with the third triple double in program history against Baylor. McFarland had 17 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds against Baylor, one board shy of a triple double. Her 12 assists were also a new career high. The last time Ole Miss had a triple double was during the season when Kayla Melson had 11 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in a win over Southeastern Louisiana. Diara Moore was also close to a triple double this season with 25 points, eight rebounds and seven assists against Tulane. Melson, Armintie Price and Eugenia Connor are the lone Rebels to post triple doubles. Faleru With Three Straight Double Doubles Tia Faleru picked up her third consecutive double-double with a team-best 22 points and 10 rebounds against Baylor. It was her eighth double-double of the season and her 13th career double-double. Faleru became the first Rebel since Nikki Byrd in to record double-doubles in three straight games. Faleru had her streak snapped after recording just six points and seven rebounds against Missouri. Although the streak was snapped, Faleru s eight double-doubles leads the SEC. Five Alive For the second time this season, Ole Miss had five players reach double figures against Baylor. Starters Danielle McCray (13), Tia Faleru (22), Valencia McFarland (17) and Diara Moore (13) each reached double figures, while Gracie Frizzell added 12 off the bench. The last time Ole Miss had five players in double figures was against Southeastern Louisiana (Nov. 22). 9 Southeastern Louisiana on Nov. 9, McFarland Droppin Dime Against Baylor Valencia McFarland dished out a career-high 12 assists against Baylor. McFarland has tallied double-figure assists on three occasions this season including two of the last three games. McFarland has posted seven career games of 10 or more assists. Last season, she only had one game of double figures assists with 10 against Florida, but during the season, McFarland posted backto-back games of 10 and 11 assists. #Process The Rebels closed the non-conference season with a 9-5 record, its best non-conference record since when the posted a 10-3 non-conference record. The nine wins are significant as they match the entire win total from Ole Miss hasn t won more than 12 games since the season, which was also the last time the Rebels played in the postseason reaching the WNIT. Ole Miss last had 20 wins during the season when they reached the Elite Eight and finished the year with 24 wins. Faleru Hits 20 In Back-to-Back Contests Tia Faleru posted back-to-back games of 20+ points with 22 points against Baylor. It is the first time in her career she has posted back-to-back games of 20 or more points and it is her third 20-point game this season and the fourth of her career. Faleru joins Valencia McFarland, Diara Moore and Shequila Joseph as players to score 20+ points this season. Ole Miss has had a player score 20 or more points in nine of its last 11 games. Rebels Love 20 Ole Miss has pretty good luck when a player scores 20+ points. The Rebels are 7-3 when at least one player scores 20 or more points. Ole Miss had a four-game streak with a player scoring 20+ points, which was snapped against LA Tech. Currently, Ole Miss has had a player with 20 or more in five of its last six games. Can I Get A Rebound? Ole Miss has done well on the rebounding side of things this season. Against Austin Peay, Ole Miss grabbed 51 rebounds, marking the fourth time this season and the second time in the last four games the Rebels have grabbed 50 or more rebounds. Ole Miss grabbed a season-high 61 against Jacksonville State in the seasonopener on Nov. 8. Ole Miss is averaging 45.2 rebounds per game up from 39.9 rebounds a year ago. Doubling Up on Assists Entering the South Alabama game, the Rebels had posted seven straight games with double-figures assists but that streak was snapped with just eight assists against the Jaguars. Since that game, Ole Miss has started a new streak and has posted double-figure assists in each of its last four games and in 11 of its last 12 games. The Rebels are averaging 13.8 assists per game and have only failed to reach double-figure assists on three occasions this season. Valencia McFarland s 6.3 assists per game ranks her 17th nationally and second in the SEC. Ole Miss Starters Lead The Way Ole Miss has been fairly consistent with its starting lineup this season and it seems like the way the starters go is the way that the Rebels go. For the season, Ole Miss starters have accounted for 74 percent of Ole Miss scoring and the Rebel starters are averaging 56.8 points per game compared to just 19.7 points per game for the bench. Gracie Frizzell leads the Ole Miss reserves with 6.9 points per game. The Rebel bench posted a seasonlow two points against Mississippi Valley State and had a season-high 35 points against Austin Peay. Moore Ties Career-High at Tulane Diara Moore tied her career-high with 25 points in Ole Miss dominating win over Tulane. It was Moore s first 20-point outing this season and her second career 20-point game. Moore scored 25 in a win over Southeastern La. last season. Moore Lethal From the Charity Stripe Not only did Diara Moore score 25 against Tulane, she added 13 of those points from the charity stripe. Moore went 13-of-16 from the line and made 12 consecutive at one point. In fact, Moore made more 72 percent of Ole Miss free throws against Tulane, nailing 13 of the Rebels 18 free throws on the afternoon. Moore s 13 free throws is a new career high and are also the most free throws made by a Rebel player this season. Rebels Keep Opponents Cold As Ice From Long Range Ole Miss has been playing tight defense on the arc these days by holding opponents to just 25.8 (78-of-302) percent shooting from long range. Ole Miss has held eight opponents to 20 percent of less from beyond the arc, including keeping five opponents to 15 percent or less. The 25.8 percent ranks 16th nationally and is fourth in the SEC. For her career, McFarland has 366 assists and is vying to become one of just three players with over 1,000 points, 500 assists and 250 steals. She needs just 134 more assists to reach the 500 mark and would need to average 9.5 assists the rest of the way to reach the feat. She picked up her 100th assist this season against Tennessee, marking the fourth consecutive year she has topped the 100-assist mark. Rebels in the SEC Stats Several Rebels are ranked in the SEC statistics.* Tia Faleru leads the league in rebounds with 9.9/game and in offensive rebounds with 4.6/gm. She also ranks 10th in scoring with 15.5 points/game. Valencia McFarland is eighth in scoring with 15.5/game and second in assists with 6.3/gm. As a team, Ole Miss ranks fourth in threepoint field goal defense allowing opponents to shoot just.258 percent (78-of-302). Career-Night For Faleru Tia Faleru made her presence known in Ole Miss game against Washington State. The 6-1 junior exploded for a career-high 29 points and 16 rebounds both team highs. Faleru s 29 points marked the first 20-point game for a Rebel since Valencia McFarland dropped 24 in a win at Florida last season. Her 16 rebounds was also the most boards for an Ole Miss player since former Rebel Courtney Mabra posted 15 against Cleveland State last December. Faleru was just one point shy of hitting the 30-point mark and had she hit that, it would have been the first time a Rebel dropped 30 points since Bianca Thomas hit the mark against Vanderbilt during the season. Faleru Owning the Boards Tia Faleru has been a beast on the board for the Rebels. The junior is averaging 9.9 rebounds per game and leads the SEC in rebounding. Faleru has posted doublefigure rebounds in nine games this season and tallied a career-high 16 rebounds against Washington State. For comparison sake, Faleru posted just four games with double figures rebounds all of last season, a mark she has already surpassed in McFarland Closing In on Impressive Milestone McFarland is closing in on another milestone this season. The point guard is aiming to become the third person in program history with 1,000 points, 500 assists and 250 steals. After reaching the 1,000 point mark last season, McFarland needs just 134 assists and 112 steals to accomplish the feat. She will join former Rebel greats Carol Ross ( ) and Glenda Springfield ( ). 11 Catch That Thief Valencia McFarland is Ole Miss women s basketball s resident thief. To date, she has 138 steals and has led the team in steals each of the last three years. She is just the third Rebel to ever lead her team in assists three times in a career and is the first to lead the team in three consecutive years since Rebel great Arminitie Price led the team all four years ( ). Should she lead the squad in assists this season she will join Price- Herrington as the only Rebels to accomplish the feat. Rebels with Successful Non-Conference Slate Ole Miss concluded the non-conference slate with a 9-5 record and reached several milestones during the nonconference portion of the schedule: -Ole Miss nine wins matches its win total from the season. The last time, Ole Miss had nine wins during the non-conference slate was during the season when they went The Rebels posted a seven-game win streak, the longest win streak for Ole Miss since the season when the team opened with seven straight wins. -The Rebels battled No. 9/9 Baylor to the wire, falling in the final minutes. Ole Miss held a 10-point lead at one point and led the Bears, at halftime, which was the first time all season Baylor had trailed at halftime. -First-year head coach Matt Insell picked up his first win as a head coach with Ole Miss win over Jacksonville State in the season-opener. Insell to Appear on Reb Talk in 2014 Head coach Matt Insell will appear on RebTalk throughout the 2014 SEC season. RebTalk takes place on Monday s beginning at 7 p.m. at Buffalo Wild Wings in Oxford. New Arena on the Horizon With $95 million in pledges and cash, the Forward Together campaign entered its building phase in September paving the way for a new basketball arena. The building phase will focus on the Rebels new basketball arena and a five-story parking garage with 800 spaces to service the campus. In order to be completed by September 2014, construction will begin on the new parking garage this fall. Construction on the new arena will begin in the spring of 2014 with the goal to open the arena no later than Jan. 2016, in time for the start of conference action. Ole Miss Welcomes Three in Early Signing Period Ole Miss signed three players during the early signing period, who will join the Rebels for the season. McFarland Named Preseason All-SEC Senior guard Valencia McFarland picked up her second consecutive preseason All-SEC accolade as she earned a spot on the second team. The Edwards, Miss., native earns her second consecutive preseason accolade, also earning second-team honors last season. McFarland, a second team All-SEC selection as a sophomore, enters her senior season second among active SEC players in career assists (420) and fifth among active players in scoring with 1,107 career points. Youth Be Served (And We Aren t Talking About The Players) Ole Miss head coach Matt Insell, told his parents that he would be a head coach in the SEC by age 30 when he was 13 and well he was right. When Insell was hired on March 28, 2013, he was 30 years old. At the tipoff of the season, Insell is the second youngest coach in Division I, trailing only High Point s DeUnna Hendrix who is 29 years old.
