Indiana FOOTBALL The Old Oaken Bucket Game - November 22, THE OLD OAKEN BUCKET The symbol of football supremacy between Indiana and Purdue, the Old Oaken Bucket has become one of the nation s most recognized and famed trophies. This year marks 84th meeting between the two rivals for the trophy. Both institutions had been meeting on the football field since 1891 when the Indiana and Purdue Alumni Clubs of Chicago held a joint meeting in 1925 to discuss the possibility of undertaking a worthy joint enterprise on behalf of the two schools. Dr. Clarence Jones proposed the creation of a traditional football trophy to be awarded to the winner of the annual clash. Dr. Jones and Russel Gray of Purdue were appointed to recommend a suitable trophy by J. Frank Lindsey, (Indiana, Class of 1913), who was elected chairman of the joint committee. At a later meeting they recommended an old oaken bucket as the most typical Hoosier form of trophy, that the bucket should be taken from some well in Indiana, and that a chain to be made of bronze block I and P letters should be provided for the bucket. The school winning the traditional football game each year should have possession of the Old Oaken Bucket until the next game and should attach the block letter representing the winning school to the bail with the score engraved on the latter link. Fritz Ernst of Purdue and Indiana s Wiley J. Huddle were given the task of finding the bucket. They located it on the old Bruner Farm between Kent and Hanover in southern Indiana. The region had been settled by the Bruner family in the 1840 s, making today s bucket well over a century old. Excellent repair work put the bucket, moss and mold-covered with some staves showing signs of decay, into good shape for its initial appearance, which ended in a 0-0 tie in INDIANA VS. Tiller is Purdue s all-time winningest coach with an record in 12 year. He is overall in 18 seasons. The Boilermakers are 3-8 on the year and 1-6 in Big Ten action. They have lost seven of their last eight ballgames after opening the season 2-1. Purdue is scoring 21.3 points per game and averaging rushing, passing (second in Big Ten) and total yards each time out. Fifth-year senior running back Kory Sheets ranks fourth in the Big Ten with 97.3 yards per game and is fifth in the league with allpurpose yards per contest. He is averaging 4.9 yards per carry and is third in the Big Ten with 13 touchdowns. Fifth-year senior quarterback Curtis Painter returned to action at Iowa last weekend after missing nearly three games with a shoulder injury. He has thrown for 1,952 yards and eight scores with 11 interceptions. Back-up Justin Siller has played in eight games with 483 yards, three touchdowns and two picks. Senior wide receivers Desmond Tardy and Greg Orton rank third and fifth in the conference, respectively, with 69.3 and 62.5 yards per game. Orton has 65 receptions and four TDs, while Tardy has 58 catches and four scores. Senior wideout Aaron Valentin is second in the Big Ten with yards per kick return. Purdue has allowed 26.5 points, rushing yards, passing yards and total yards per game. The Boilermakers have 23 sacks, eight interceptions and eight fumble recoveries and are minus-7 in turnover margin. Fifth-year senior linebacker Anthony Heygood is third in the Big Ten and leads the Boilermakers with 107 tackles, 61 solo, in addition to six tackles for loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one interception. Sophomore defensive end Ryan Kerrigan is seventh in the conference with seven sacks and tied for ninth with 10 tackles for loss. He also has 53 tackles, two forced fumbles and one interception. Sack Campaign Junior defensive end Jammie Kirlew, who was recently added to the Watch List for the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award, is seventh nationally and second in the Big Ten in sacks (10.5), and he is fourth nationally and leads the league in tackles for loss (18.5). In conference action only, Kirlew paces the Big Ten with 14 tackles for loss and is tied for second with seven sacks. Kirlew has recorded a sack in six of his last seven games. He posted two against Wisconsin, his third multi-sack game of the season and the fourth of his career. His team- and career-high 10.5 sacks are good for fourth place on IU s single-season list, and his 16.5 career sacks are a half-sack behind Joe Huff for fifth place on the school s career chart. Although he did not collect a sack at No. 8 Penn State last weekend, the Orlando native set a career high with 11 tackles, five solo, and forced his second fumble of the season. He started his six-game sack streak with 2.5 sacks at IU REWIND: INDIANA 27 PURDUE 24 - NOV. 17, 2007 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Kellen Lewis ran for two touchdowns, and Indiana held off a frantic Purdue rally when Austin Starr made a 49-yard field goal with 30 seconds left to hang on for a victory. The win gave the Hoosiers (7-5, 3-5 Big Ten) the Old Oaken Bucket for the first time since 2001 and secured a spot in the Insight Bowl, IU s first bowl appearance since Bill Lynch became the first Hoosier coach to lead his team to a bowl game in his first season. Playing in front of a sellout crowd, Marcus Thigpen ran for a career-high 140 yards. Lewis kept Purdue s defense off balance with a nifty mix of run and pass and Starr made a career-long field goal for the winner. Curtis Painter was 28-of-45 for 279 yards and one TD, but the Hoosier defense limited Purdue to 69 yards rushing - minus-12 in the first half. It appeared Indiana had the game wrapped up after Lewis ran nine yards for one score, threw eight yards to James Hardy for the second and scooted eight yards to make it 24-3 early in the second half. But Purdue rallied with two one-yard TD runs from Kory Sheets and finally tied the score at 24 after taking advantage of Thigpen s late fumble. Painter followed that with a five-yard pass to Jake Standeford, who was wide open in the end zone with 3:39 to go. Then Lewis drove the 45 yards to set up Starr, whose field goal just cleared the crossbar. Minnesota and also tallied 10 tackles to go along with 3.5 tackles for loss, the second-best total of his career. Kirlew set a new career mark with nine solo stops against No. 22 Northwestern, and he currently sits second on the Hoosiers with 58 total tackles and paces the team with 45 solos on the year. His 6.3 tackles per game share 18th in the Big Ten and rank second among defensive linemen in the league. Kirlew added three tackles for loss and one forced fumble vs. NU, while his sack of Mike Kafka resulted in a 24-yard loss. He contributed two more TFLs vs. Central Michigan and two against Wisconsin to move into fifth place on the school s career chart with 36 in his career. Kirlew leads the team with his 18.5 tackles for loss this year, which is fifth on the Hoosiers singleseason list, and he has 11 multi-tfl games in his career and seven this season. He has collected at least three tackles for loss three times, has at least one TFL in seven of his last eight games and in nine of 11 games this season. Under Pressure With its three sacks at No. 8 Penn State, the Hoosier defense has climbed into second place in the Big Ten and 17th nationally with 30 sacks this season. The Nittany Lions entered the game ranked No. 1 in the conference and fifth in the nation allowing eight sacks in their first 10 ballgames. Indiana has 22 sacks over its last seven games (3.14 per game), including seven vs. Central Michigan, its highest total since its school-record nine at Iowa last season. The Hoosiers have recorded at least one sack 10 times this year and have eight multi-sack games, including six of their last seven contests. Nine different players have recorded at least a half-sack, led by junior defensive end Jammie Kirlew s 10.5 and junior middle linebacker Matt Mayberry s total of five. Kirlew also leads the team with 18.5 tackles for loss followed by junior weak-side linebacker Will Patterson s 8.5 and Mayberry s 7.5. M*a*s*h Unit Junior free safety Nick Polk became the third starting member of the Hoosier secondary to suffer a season-ending knee injury two weeks ago, joining senior cornerback Christopher Phillips and junior strong safety Austin Thomas. Overall this season, Indiana has lost 35 starting games to 16 starters. Phillips has missed eight games followed by Thomas (6), Polk (4), junior QB Kellen Lewis (3), sophomore DT Deonte Mack (2) and junior LT Rodger Saffold (2). Junior wide receivers Andrew Means and Ray Fisher, junior C Pete Saxon, junior TE Brian Zematis, sophomore C Alex Perry, sophomore RG Cody Faulkner, redshirt freshman LG Andrew McDonald, junior LB Will Patterson, sophomore QB Ben Chappell and sophomore CB Richard Council have each missed one game. The offensive line has been hit hard by injury as well, using seven different starting lineups this season and six in the last six weeks. Saxon entered the Iowa game with 23 starts in 24 games at left guard, but he moved to center for the first time in his career and made four straight starts before missing the Wisconsin game with a head injury. He was replaced in the lineup by junior walk-on Mike Reiter, who has played all three interior positions and started at left guard against Central Michigan. Sophomore Jarrod Smith earned his first career start at left guard vs. the Badgers and moved to center for his second start at No. 8 Penn State. Meanwhile, McDonald filled in for Saxon at left guard against Iowa and started at Illinois. However, he suffered an injury against the Fighting Illini as did Faulkner. That paved the way for true freshman Justin Pagán to make his first career start at left guard and Reiter to earn his first career start at right guard against Northwestern. Pagán, who is the third true freshman to play this season, started at left tackle for the injured Saffold against Central Michigan and Wisconsin before moving back to left guard when Saffold

Indiana FOOTBALL The Old Oaken Bucket Game - November 22, returned at Penn State. He has played left and right tackle in addition to left guard in his six weeks of action. To see the game-by-game starting lineups please go to page 22. Forcing Mistakes A week after forcing four takeaways against Wisconsin and earning a plus-3 edge in the turnover battle, the Hoosiers picked off a pass and recovered a pair of fumbles at No. 8 Penn State with just one turnover of their own. Senior safety Brandon Mosley collected his first career interception, while junior defensive end Greg Middleton recovered two fumbles, one forced by junior defensive end Jammie Kirlew and the other by senior defensive end Ryan Marando. The previous week vs. the Badgers, cornerback Donnell Jones second-quarter interception was the first of the redshirt freshman s career. Redshirt freshman linebacker Darius Johnson forced his first career fumble and sophomore Terrance Thomas recovered it for his first career recovery. Redshirt freshman Zach Davis-Walker recorded his first career fumble recovery on a muffed punt just before halftime, and sophomore linebacker Tyler Replogle forced his first career fumble while redshirt freshman defensive end Eric Thomas had his first fumble recovery in the fourth. In the last four games, Indiana has forced 13 takeaways with five interceptions and eight fumble recoveries. The Hoosiers are plus-9 in turnover margin during the stretch, moving to plus-4 in the category on the season, which ranks fourth in the Big Ten. Junior strong safety Austin Thomas leads the team with two picks, junior middle linebacker Matt Mayberry and Middleton share the team lead with two fumble recoveries, and Marando leads the team with three forced fumbles. Let s Play Two, Three... OR Four? Three Hoosiers took snaps under center against Central Michigan by design. Four Hoosiers took snaps under center against Wisconsin out of necessity. Junior Kellen Lewis and Ben Chappell split time the first twoplus quarters against the Chippewas, while sophomore Mitchell Evans saw his first action at QB. Chappell threw for 156 yards and one score on 8-of-16, as Lewis completed 5-of-9 for 57 yards. Evans took two snaps under center and rushed both times, including a 14-yard touchdown scamper. Chappell played the first half against the Badgers before leaving with a head injury. He finished 11-of-20 for 126 yards and one score with six rushes for 24 yards and one TD. Lewis attempted to play but was forced to leave due to his injured ankle after throwing five passes and rushing once. Evans threw for nine yards and rushed five times, playing a majority of the second half before giving way to redshirt freshman Teddy Schell. Schell closed the ballgame, his first career appearance, completing one pass for six yards. Lewis, who has been bothered by his ankle injury since the Big Ten opener against Michigan State, played nearly the entire game at No. 8 CAREER SACKS Adewale Ogunleye Van Waiters Greg Farrall Greg Middleton Joe Huff Jammie Kirlew CAREER TACKLES FOR LOSS Adewale Ogunleye Van Waiters Greg Farrall Nathan Davis Jammie Kirlew Kyle Killion Joe Huff CAREER KICK RETURN YARDS 1. 2,088 Derin Graham ,913 Marcus Thigpen ,566 Lance Bennett ,500 A.C. Kicking off the Big Ten season, Lewis shared time with Chappell against the Spartans and Minnesota before missing the second half against Iowa. Chappell started and played the entire way at Illinois and in the team s win over No. 22 Northwestern before Lewis returned vs. Central Michigan. On the season, Chappell has started three games and played in nine overall with 1,001 passing yards, four passing TDs and three rushing scores. All four of his touchdown throws have been over 40 yards and the Bloomington South High School graduate has two games with one rushing TD and one passing score. Lewis has also played in nine games with eight starts, and he has thrown for 1,039 yards with five TDs and a 57.7 completion percentage. He also has 452 rushing yards (50.2 per game) and three rushing touchdowns. This is the first time in Indiana football history two quarterbacks have reached 1,000 yards in the same season. Men In The Middle One of the biggest strengths of the Hoosiers entering the season was the linebacking corps, and that has proven to be the case. Middle linebacker Matt Mayberry and weak-side linebacker Will Patterson ranked first and third on the team in tackles before Patterson suffered a knee injury in the first quarter against Wisconsin and has not returned to the field. Mayberry still leads the team with 78 tackles, while Patterson owns 55 stops and is third on the club despite missing the last seven quarters. A member of the Hoosiers front seven has not led the team in tackles since linebacker Kyle Killion paced the defense with 91 stops in Mayberry finished with a career-high 13 tackles and a career-best 10 solo stops, but more impressively, he matched a school record with four sacks against Central Michigan. He is just the third player in school history to reach the mark, joining current Chicago Bear Adewale Ogunleye (at Ohio State Oct. 18, 1997) and Van Waiters (at Michigan State Nov. 8, 1996). Mayberry recorded his second straight 10-tackle game with 10 against Wisconsin, 6 solo, and made it three in a row with a game-high 11 stops at No. 8 Penn State. Patterson contributed 10 tackles, his sixth career double-digit tackle game, with a careerhigh three tackles for loss against Central Michigan. The Indianapolis native also became the first Hoosier since Killion (vs. Penn State Nov. 13, 2004) to record an interception and a sack in the same game. Patterson has three career interceptions and 4.5 career sacks. Since the start of the 2006 campaign, Patterson leads the team with 127 solo tackles and is second with 200 total tackles (Austin Thomas, 202). Patterson s replacement at Penn State, sophomore Tyler Replogle, finished fourth on the Hoosiers with seven tackles. Mayberry is tied for 10th in the Big Ten with 7.1 tackles per game. He has 46 solo stops (second on the team), five sacks (second), 7.5 tackles for loss (third) and a pair of pass breakups. Patterson is third on the club with 42 solos and owns 1.5 sacks, 8.5 tackles for loss (second) and three pass breakups. Making His Mark After moving from linebacker to defensive end during 2007 spring practice, fifth-year senior Ryan Marando contributed to the Hoosiers school-record 42 sacks last season with five of his own, which ranked second on the club. Marando has proved to be a menace again in He has started four straight games at defensive end and nine overall this season. Marando collected the first two-sack game of his career at No. 8 Penn State last weekend and also added a forced fumble, his third of the season and the fourth of his career, and a pass breakup. He leads the Hoosiers and shares

Indiana FOOTBALL The Old Oaken Bucket Game - November 22, second in the Big Ten with his three forced fumbles in addition to ranking fourth on the team with 3.5 sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss in The Lakewood, Ohio, native forced a secondquarter fumble on a sack and then recovered the ball at the two-yard line against Murray State. Marando later added his second forced fumble on the night. He became the first Hoosier to force two fumbles in a game since Kenny Kendal vs. Kentucky on Sept. 18, Stepping In With starting safeties Austin Thomas and Nick Polk both out with season-ending knee injuries, the Hoosiers turned to seniors Joe Kleinsmith and Brandon Mosley to start in the secondary on Senior Day against the Badgers. Kleinsmith reached double digits in tackles for the second time this campaign with 10 stops, eight solo. Mosley finished with a career-high and game-high 11 tackles and a career-best eight solo stops. Kleinsmith earned his second straight start and his sixth of the season at strong safety for Thomas at No. 8 Penn State, where he posted five tackles. Mosley also collected his second straight start and his fourth of the year for Polk at free safety vs. the Nittany Lions, and he recorded his first career interception in the game. Earlier in the campaign against Michigan State, Kleinsmith led the Hoosiers with a careerhigh 12 tackles, eight solo, while Mosley took advantage of his first career start with a careerbest 10 stops and one pass breakup vs. the Spartans. Kleinsmith is fifth on the team with 50 stops, 35 solo, and three pass breakups this year, and he collected his first career sack at Illinois. Mosley has 37 tackles, 27 solo, with one interception, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one pass breakup. Triple Threat Marcus Thigpen made a bit of history at Minnesota. He finished the game with three catches for 88 yards and a touchdown. Thigpen became the first player in school history to go over 1,000 yards in rushing (1,568), receiving (1,028) and kickoff returns (1,913). He is 175 yards behind Derin Graham s ( ) school mark of 2,088 career kick return yards and ranks seventh in Big Ten history. Thigpen is also the 19th rusher in school history to cross the 1,500-yard mark. The Detroit native entered another IU career top 10 list against Central Michigan after recording his 19th and 20th career touchdowns and tacked on a 57-yard score at No. 8 Penn State to give him 21 in his career. With the three scores, Thigpen, who has nine career rushing TDs, nine career receiving TDs and three scores on kick returns, moved into a tie for eighth on the career touchdowns chart. He shares the spot with Alex Smith ( ) and Lonnie Johnson ( ). Thigpen finished the Illinois game with 207 all-purpose yards to become the fifth player in school history with over 4,000 career allpurpose yards. He added 154 all-purpose yards against Northwestern to surpass Antwaan Randle El (4,134) and move into third on IU s alltime list (4,509). Thigpen has gone over 150 allpurpose yards seven times this season and he has eclipsed the 200 all-purpose yardage mark on two occasions. All-Purpose Back Senior captain Marcus Thigpen recorded 113 yards on just nine carries and two touchdowns against Michigan State. Thigpen also added two receptions for 94 yards and a score to go along with 60 kick return yards. He closed the game with 267 all-purpose yards, the 10th-highest total in IU lore. Thigpen also holds the fourthbest mark in school history with 311 yards at Illinois (Oct. 7, 2006). The track standout who has been dubbed The Fastest Man in Bloomington raced a career-long 78 yards to paydirt and took a Kellen Lewis pass 79 yards to the house to become the first Hoosier to ever record a rushing and a receiving TD over 75 yards in the same game. Thigpen became the first Hoosier to score on the ground and through the air since Demetrius McCray at Minnesota in 2006 and his run was the longest since Levron Williams scored on an 80-yarder in It marked the first time in his career he crossed the goal line on three separate occasions. Thigpen also rushed for a pair of scores against Central Michigan, his third game this season and the fourth of his career with two rushing TDs, and raced 57 yards to paydirt at Penn State for his seventh rushing touchdown of The Detroit native joins Penn State s Derrick Williams as the only players in the Big Ten s top 10 in all-purpose yards (4th, 33rd nationally; 142.7), scoring (7th, 4.9) and kick returns (10th, 22.3). In Big Ten games only, Thigpen is fourth with all-purpose yards per game. Using His Speed With his 77-yard touchdown run against Central Michigan, fifth-year senior running back Marcus Thigpen has four 75-plus yard scores this season. Adding in his three career kickoff TD returns and a 74-yard touchdown grab his freshman year, Thigpen has eight career scores on plays over 70 yards in his career. He added a 57-yard touchdown run at No. 8 Penn State, his sixth scoring play (nine overall scores this season) and fourth rushing touchdown from 50-plus yards in Thigpen netted his third 100-yard game of the season and the fifth of his career with 109 yards and six carries against the Chippewas. He set a new school record for the fewest number of rushes to top 100 yards, breaking his own mark from earlier this season against Murray State (100 yards, seven carries). Thigpen s third 100-yard game came against Michigan State, a 113-yard effort on just nine carries. Thigpen finished the Murray State game with five plays over 20 yards, including two on the ground, two on kickoffs and one reception. He added four against Michigan State, two apiece at Minnesota and vs. Iowa, four at Illinois, vs. Northwestern and against Central Michigan, and one more at No. 8 Penn State to push his team-leading total to 29, eight of which have MOVING UP THE CHARTS Three Hoosier players are looking to enter the Indiana record book in several single-season categories. Thigpen has been involved in six of the plays (four rush - 67, 78, 77, 57; two pass - 79, 77), while junior quarterback Kellen Lewis has two rushing touchdowns (75, 62) and one passing score (79). Chappell has two passing TDs (77, 64) and Fisher owns the remaining receiving touchdown. On the season, the Hoosiers have 73 plays over 20 yards, good for 6.6 per ballgame, with 16 of those reaching paydirt. Twenty-two (30.1 percent) of those plays have come through the air, 16 (21.9) on the ground, 32 on kick returns (43.8), two on punt returns and one on a fumble return, which went 31 yards for a score. IU Touchdown King With his 11-yard touchdown pass to Ray Fisher against Western Kentucky, junior quarterback Kellen Lewis passed Antwaan Randle El on the school s career passing touchdown list. Lewis would add a second TD later in the ballgame to give him 44 for his career, passing Randle El s total of 42 set from He collected two passing scores against Michigan State and one vs. Iowa to push his career total to 47. Lewis and Randle El are the only quarterbacks in IU lore to reach 40 passing touchdowns, 6,250 passing yards, 7,750 total yards, 525 completions and 950 attempts. The Jacksonville, Fla., native also eclipsed Steve Bradley s (532, ) career completion record with his 538th completion against Iowa (he has 552 in his career). Lewis currently holds 16 major school quarterback records, including eight career and eight single-season marks. With His Legs To go along with his two TDs and 144 yards through the air, Kellen Lewis went over 100 yards rushing against Western Kentucky and set a career high with 25 rushes for 148 yards vs. Ball State. He now has four career 100-yard ballgames and is averaging 50.2 rushing yards per game in 2008, which ranks 13th overall in the Big Ten and second among league quarterbacks. Lewis finished the WKU contest with 185 yards on nine carries, the fifth-highest rushing total by an IU quarterback in school history. Antwaan Randle El had three games with more rushing yards and Lewis ran for 199 against Akron last year. His 75-yard TD run in the first quarter was a career long and it was the first TD run of 70 yards or more by a Hoosier since Levron Williams broke off an 80-yarder against Michigan State on Nov. 10, Lewis added a 62-yard TD run in the fourth for his third-career two-touchdown game on the ground. He became the first player in IU history to record two 60-plus yard TD rushes in a single game. Dual-threat attack In 2007, Kellen Lewis was one of only three quarterbacks in the country to pass for 3,000 yards and rush for 700 yards (Tim Tebow, Florida; Dan LeFevour, Central Michigan). He finished the 2007 season with a school-record 3,043 yards through the air, an IU-best 3,779 total yards and 736 rushing yards. In 2008, Lewis is seventh in the Big Ten averaging yards of total offense per game. With his two scores through the air and two on the ground against Western Kentucky, he recorded the seventh four-touchdown game of his career, two behind Antwaan Randle El s school record of nine. Lewis has collected a passing and rushing touchdown in the same game 12 times in his career, three behind Randle El s mark of 15. He has reached the 300-yard total offense barrier 12 times in his career. Lewis is averaging total yards in 33 career games. The Jacksonville native has one 350-yard passing effort, four 300-yard performances, reached 250 yards nine times and eclipsed 200 yards on 17 occasions. He has completed over 70 percent of his passes six times and over 60 percent 13 times in his 30 career starts. Lewis now owns 1,629 career rushing yards, good for a 49.4 per game average and ninthmost rushing yards for a quarterback in Big Ten history. He became the 18th Hoosier to break the 1,500 rushing yards barrier and has crossed the goal line 17 times as a rusher. Antwaan Randle El is the school s all-time QB rushing leader with 3,895 career rushing yards and 44 touchdowns. No-Huddle Attack The Hoosier coaching staff implemented the no-huddle offense during spring practice. Quarterback Ben Chappell ran the offense in the spring before splitting time with Kellen Lewis during preseason camp. Lewis started the first six games this season with Chappell seeing significant action, including his first career start at Illinois and starts against Northwestern and Wisconsin. Lewis started against Central Michigan with Chappell throwing for 156 yards, and Lewis returned to the starting lineup at Penn State as Chappell sat out with a head injury. CHAPPELL IN CHARGE A week after receiving his first career start at Illinois, sophomore quarterback Ben Chappell earned his first victory as a starter with the Hoosiers upset of Northwestern, the 22nd-ranked team in the BCS. Chappell found true freshman Damarlo Belcher for a 43-yard TD and added a three-yard TD run. He set career highs with 21 completions, 34 attempts and 219 yards and did not commit a turnover. He started the third game of his career against Wisconsin and threw for 126 yards on 11-of-20 passing in one half of play before leaving with a head injury, which forced him to miss the Penn State game as well. 7 Indiana FOOTBALL The Old Oaken Bucket Game - November 22, yard touchdown toss and rushed for 24 yards with a one-yard score. It marked the second time this season he has had a touchdown run and a touchdown pass in the same game. The Bloomington South High School graduate has seen action in nine of the team s 11 games in In his last four games (three starts), Chappell has thrown for 673 yards with three passing scores, two rushing scores, one interception and a 52.5 completion percentage. On the season, Chappell has 1,001 passing yards, four passing touchdowns, three rushing scores and a 52.3 completion percentage. Sneaky Good Very quietly this season junior wideout Ray Fisher has led the Hoosiers with 40 catches and sits tied for seventh in the Big Ten with 4.00 receptions per game. With his three catches at Penn State, Fisher has 116 in his career and moved into a share of eighth place on Indiana s all-time receptions list with Duane Gunn ( ). With his career-long 64-yard touchdown reception vs. Central Michigan, Fisher became the 28th Hoosier to move over 1,000 yards in his career and now owns 1,056. He finished the game with three receptions for 75 yards. Fisher sits atop the team with four TD grabs this season and is second on the club with 359 yards. The Cleveland native also ranks fifth in the Big Ten with 9.6 yards per punt return. Fisher has recorded 106 yards on 11 returns, including a career-long 29-yarder at No. 8 Penn State, the longest return allowed by PSU this season. On The Move Mitchell Evans has proved to be one of the most versatile players on the Hoosier roster in his second full season in Bloomington. Evans arrived on campus last year and bounced between safety and quarterback his first two weeks of preseason camp. He eventually moved to safety permanently and appeared in 12 games with 12 tackles and two interceptions. During 2008 spring practice, Evans moved back to quarterback and ran the second team offense. As preseason camp opened, Evans worked with the quarterbacks before moving to yet another position. The West Milton, Ohio, native joined the deep wide receiver corps. Despite finding himself in his third position and one he never played before in his entire playing career, Evans has enjoyed his new home and provided the Hoosiers with several different options. He played quarterback for the first time in game action against Central Michigan, lining up behind center twice and rushing both times, including a bruising 14-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. After Ben Chappell and Kellen Lewis suffered injuries against Wisconsin, Evans played a majority of the second half at quarterback. He relieved Lewis in the fourth quarter at Penn State and has attempted eight passes for 37 yards (one TD) and rushed for 26 yards on eight carries (one TD) this season. In the Hoosiers victory over No. 22 Northwestern, Evans took an end-around and CAREER PASSING TDS Kellen Lewis Antwaan Randle El Steve Bradley Harry Gonso Tim Clifford CAREER PASSING YARDS 1. 7,469 Antwaan Randle El ,579 Steve Bradley ,303 Kellen Lewis ,470 Dave Schnell ,400 Trent Green CAREER COMPLETIONS Kellen Lewis Steve Bradley Antwaan Randle El Trent Green Dave Schnell CAREER ATTEMPTS 1. 1,060 Antwaan Randle El ,023 Steve Bradley Kellen Lewis Trent Green Dave Schnell CAREER TOTAL OFFENSE 1. 11,364 Antwaan Randle El ,932 Kellen Lewis ,943 Steve Bradley ,073 Dave Schnell ,916 Trent Green CAREER COMPLETION PCT Babe Laufenberg Kellen Lewis Dave Schnell Jay Rodgers Trent Green completed his first pass attempt to true freshman Tandon Doss for a 28-yard touchdown pass, which proved to be the game-winning points. It marked the first TD throw by a wideout since Sept 26, 1998, when O.J. Conner hit Antwaan Randle El on a 51-yard score vs. Cincinnati. The West Milton, Ohio, native collected his first career reception against Murray State and finished the evening with a pair of catches for 19 yards. He added his most productive outing against Iowa with three catches for 36 yards and has nine catches for 129 yards to go along with six Hoosier special teams player of the week honors on the season. Hang Time One of the team s biggest question marks heading into the season following the graduation of Michael Hines was the punting game. Redshirt freshman Chris Hagerup has turned those doubts into one of the Hoosiers strengths. Hagerup is third in the Big Ten and 24th in the nation averaging 42.3 yards per punt. He averaged 40.7 yards per punt (nine punts) at No. 8 Penn State and has averaged over 40 yards per game five out of the last six ballgames and in seven of the last nine contests. Going up against Central Michigan s Antonio Brown, the top punt returner in the nation entering the contest, on Nov. 1, Hagerup averaged a net of 42.8 yards per punt with three inside the 20-yard line and one inside the 10-yard line. The previous week vs. Northwestern, he averaged 42.2 yards per punt (six punts) and pinned the Wildcats at their own two- and three-yard lines. He recorded his first career rush when he scampered 17 yards to convert a crucial first down on IU s second drive. The Hoosiers scored six points on the next play. On the heels of a 50.0 average (three punts) against Ball State, he blasted six punts against Michigan State for an average of 51.5 yards (the fifth-highest single-game total in IU history) with one downed inside the 20, four over 50 yards and a 67-yarder, which is the longest punt by a Hoosier since Tyson Beattie s 71-yarder vs. UConn on Sept. 23, His 67-yarder is also tied for the longest punt in the Big Ten this year. On the season, the Whitefish Bay, Wis., native has plus yarders and 14 have landed inside the 20-yard line. After averaging just 37.0 yards on his first six punts of the season (games one and two), Hagerup is averaging 42.9 yards on his last 52 punts with 10 of those traveling over 50 yards and 13 falling inside the 20, including three inside the five-yard line the last five contests. He has kicked at least one 50-yard punt in seven of the team s 10 games. Mac Attack As Marcus Thigpen dealt with a nagging ankle injury and Bryan Payton sat out with an ankle injury, running back Demetrius McCray earned a chance to take center stage against Wisconsin. The junior ran for 53 yards on just nine carries (5.9 yards per rush) with a long of 31 yards, but he made his biggest impact in the kick return game. Replacing Thigpen, who ranks second in school history and seventh in Big Ten history with 1,913 career kick return yards, McCray racked up 191 return yards, the second-highest mark in school history, on eight returns. Thigpen holds the school record with 197 at Illinois on Oct. 7, McCray finished the game with a career-high 244 all-purpose yards. The Brandon, Fla., native also returned five kicks for 82 yards at Penn State and sits eighth in the Big Ten with a 22.8 kick return average (387 yards on 17 returns). Running Wild For the fourth time this season, the Hoosiers rushed for over 250 yards with a 272-yard effort against Central Michigan. It marked the team s second-highest total of the season (297 vs. Western Kentucky). Indiana averaged 6.3 yards per carry and punched the ball in the

Indiana FOOTBALL The Old Oaken Bucket Game - November 22, endzone four times. The Hoosiers outrushed the Chippewas and held them to just 1.2 yards per carry. Following its 123-yard effort at No. 8 Penn State, a team that came into the game ranked ninth in the nation allowing just 99.9 rushing yards per game, IU has rushed for 1,881 yards (171.0 per game) on 413 attempts (37.5 per game) this season, good for 4.6 yards per carry. The team s yard per game and yard per carry average are on pace to be its best totals since the 2001 season (269.5, 5.5). Indiana s average ranks sixth in the Big Ten and 44th nationally. After crossing the goal line 18 times on the ground in 2007, the Hoosiers moved past that total with one against the Nittany Lions to give them 19 this season. IU has rushed for over 200 yards and carried the ball over 40 times on four occasions this year and nine times since the start of the 2007 campaign (7-2 record). Indiana scored six touchdowns on the ground against Murray State, the first time the Hoosiers have run for six TDs or more since they ran for seven in a victory over Wisconsin on Oct. 6, Five different Hoosiers scored on the ground in the game, the first time that has happened since Oct. 22, 1949 (Pittsburgh). Marcus Thigpen (twice), Bryan Payton, Demetrius McCray, Ben Chappell and Zach Davis-Walker each crossed the goal line. In 2007, only four Hoosiers reached the end zone all season. Indiana also divvied up its participation across the board, as eight different players recorded rushes. Starr earns academic Honor Fifth-year senior kicker Austin Starr earned first team ESPN The Magazine Academic All- District V honors. This is the third straight season the 2007 Academic All-American has collected all-district honors. Starr, a biology major and chemistry minor, is also a finalist for the Wuerffel Trophy, the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award (achievements in the classroom, character, community and competition), a finalist for the Awards and Recognition Association (ARA) National Sportsmanship Award and a semifinalist for the Draddy Trophy (nation s top scholar-athlete). Means To An End If you have watched junior wide receiver Andrew Means this season, you would never know he spent the summer playing professional baseball. Means, who is one of 11 Big Ten wideouts on the Biletnikoff Award Watch List, leads the team with 424 yards and is second with 32 receptions. The Avon Lake, Ohio, native recorded his first touchdown of the year, a 43-yarder, against Wisconsin and went over 100 yards for the first time in his career with 103 yards on four receptions, including a career-long 47-yarder and a 44-yarder, against Ball State. Means was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 11th round of the 2008 MLB Draft and spent the summer playing in Billings, Mont., in the Pioneer League. In his rookie baseball campaign, Means played both in center field and at designated hitter, stealing six bases and scoring 16 runs for the Billings Mustangs. He stole 33 bases in 39 attempts, the seventhhighest steal total in school history and the 17thhighest total in the nation. Means was fourth on the team with a.357 average. Cupboard Not Bare Entering the season one of the team s bigger questions was how the Hoosiers could make up for the loss of Buffalo Bill and arguably Indiana s greatest receiver James Hardy. Quarterbacks Kellen Lewis and Ben Chappell have spread the ball around to 17 different receivers this season, which shares seventh in the country. Against Michigan State, 10 Hoosiers pulled in receptions. The last time 10 different IU players pulled in a catch came back in 2005, when 10 receivers filled out the stat sheet against Minnesota on Nov. 5. Junior Andrew Means has led the way with 32 catches for 424 yards followed by junior Ray Fisher (359, 40), true freshman Damarlo Belcher (324, 23), sophomore Terrance Turner (278, 27), senior Marcus Thigpen (235, 11) and true freshman Tandon Doss (158, 12). Fisher owns four TD receptions, while Thigpen and Belcher have two and Doss has one. Instant Impact True freshman wideouts Tandon Doss and Damarlo Belcher turned in career days in Indiana s win over No. 22 Northwestern. Doss, returning from a knee injury he suffered against Michigan State, had a career-high eight receptions and 107 yards in just his fourth game. He became just the third true freshman (fourth time) in IU history to record a 100-yard game (Ernie Jones, twice; O.J. Conner), the sixth freshman (10th time) to reach the 100-yard mark (James Hardy, five times; Levron Williams; Jones; Conner) and the first true freshman to go over 100 yards since Conner had 140 yards on six catches against Ball State on Sept. 13, Doss also pulled in his first career touchdown, on what turned out to be the game-winning score, on a 28-yard pass from wideout Mitchell Evans. He joins junior Andrew Means (103 yards vs. Ball State) as the only Hoosiers to record a 100-yard receiving game this season. Belcher kicked off the Hoosier scoring with a career-long 43-yard TD from sophomore quarterback Ben Chappell. The Fort Wayne, Ind., native added career highs with six receptions and 82 yards. Combined, the duo set a true freshman record with 189 yards. The two, along with offensive lineman Justin Pagán, are the only true freshmen to play this season. Doss has 12 receptions for 158 yards with one score and is averaging 22.6 yards per game. Belcher owns 23 catches, which is fourth on the team, is third with 324 yards (fifthhighest true freshman total in IU history) and shares second with two TDs. His 14.1 yards per reception is third on the club as is his average of 29.5 yards per game. End Game One of the most disruptive defensive linemen in the country, junior Greg Middleton has picked up his play the last four ballgames. He is third on the team with three sacks, tied for second with four tackles for loss and leads the club with two fumble recoveries during that span. Middleton also added a forced fumble with 1:34 remaining in the game, which sealed the Hoosiers s victory over No. 22 Northwestern, and has recorded one sack in three of the four ballgames. Following the victory over the Wildcats, he came back the next week against Central Michigan with his third sack and two tackles for loss, and posted his fourth sack of the season and recovered a pair of fumbles, giving him three in his career, at No. 8 Penn State last weekend. Middleton, who became the first Hoosier since John Anderson (vs. Wisconsin - Nov. 11, 2000)

Indiana FOOTBALL The Old Oaken Bucket Game - November 22, to recover two fumbles in one game, ranks fourth in IU history with 20 career sacks. The Indianapolis native finished the 2007 season as a finalist for the Ted Hendricks Award, presented to the top defensive end in college football. Middleton broke Van Waiters school record (14 in 1987) with 16 sacks (102 yards lost), a total that led the nation and finished fourth in Big Ten single-season history. He closed out the year with six multi-sack contests, including a career-best 2.5 against Purdue and at Iowa, and also collected his first career touchdown on a 44-yard fumble recovery at Western Michigan. In addition to earning All-America honors, Middleton was named first team All-Big Ten by both the coaches and media in 2007, Indiana s first All-Big Ten first team selection from the defensive line since Adewale Ogunleye in Hoosier Captains Senior running back Marcus Thigpen, senior cornerback Christopher Phillips and junior linebacker Will Patterson will serve as team captains in It is a first-time honor for each Hoosier. Thigpen, Phillips and Patterson were voted into the role by their teammates. On The Right Foot A finalist for the Lou Groza Award and 2007 All-American, kicker Austin Starr became just the fifth kicker in school history to break the 40-field goal mark with two at Illinois. Starr is fifth on the school s career field goals list (42), fourth on the career extra points (102) list and seventh on the career points (228) list. One area where Starr felt he had to improve was on kickoffs and he has done just that. After posting a 63.1 average with 15 touchbacks in 2007, he is averaging 66.7 with 17 touchbacks on 50 kickoffs this season. Last year, Starr was named first team All-Big Ten by the conference media and second team by the coaches to become Indiana s first All- Big Ten first team selection at kicker since Bill Manolopoulos in He set a school record with 21 field goals (21-for-23) and 48 extra points (48-for-48), both of which had been set by former NFL great Pete Stoyanovich. Off the field, the biology major collected Academic All-America honors from CoSIDA/ ESPN The Magazine and earned Academic All- Big Ten honors for the third time in his career. He became the second Hoosier to ever earn All- America honors on and off the field, joining Brad Bomba, who accomplished the feat in Seven Blocks of Limestone Seven of Indiana s 24 true freshmen from 2006 resided on the offensive line, and late head coach Terry Hoeppner referred to them as The Seven Blocks of Limestone. Limestone is the Indiana state stone and primary building block of nearly all the buildings on campus, including Memorial Stadium. In their third year together, the 2008 offensive line features five of the Blocks. Junior Rodger Saffold, who missed the two previous games with a knee injury, returned at Penn State and has started 28 of the last 32 games at left tackle, while sophomore Pete Saxon, who missed the Wisconsin game with a head injury, has started 27 of the last 30 games with 23 of those starts at left guard and his last four starts at center. They are joined by Alex Perry, who started the first five games of the year at center, Cody Faulkner at right guard (10 starts this season) and Mike Stark at right tackle (11 starts). The remaining two find themselves firmly planted on the two-deep with James Brewer at tackle and Jarrod Smith, who received the first start of his career vs. Wisconsin at left guard and the starting nod at center in Happy Valley. Polk Pocket Junior safety Nick Polk suffered a seasonending knee injury prior to the Wisconsin game. In eight games this season, he was involved in four turnovers. Polk forced a fumble at Minnesota to give him two forced fumbles, one interception and one fumble recovery on the year. Since moving to safety from wideout in 2007, Polk has two fumble recoveries, four forced fumbles and three interceptions. In addition to his takeaways, Polk closed out his campaign with 52 tackles, 40 solo stops and 6.5 tackles per game. Polk matched a career high with 11 tackles and set a new career mark with 10 solos against Central Michigan. He has three double-digit tackle games in his career and two this season (Iowa). Polk scooped up a fumble and raced it back 31 yards for a score against Ball State. It was the Hoosiers first fumble returned for a TD since Tracy Porter scampered 71 yards against Michigan State on Oct. 13 last season. It was also IU s first defensive score since Christopher Phillips returned an interception 58 yards vs. Ball State on Nov. 3, No Doubting Thomas Austin Thomas helped seal the deal with two interceptions in the Hoosiers victory over No. 22 Northwestern. The junior strong safety picked off a pair of C.J. Bacher passes, his first twointerception game, and added 10 tackles, his second consecutive contest with double-digit tackles. The Woodstock, Ga., native has seven career ballgames with 10 or more tackles. Clinging to a lead, Thomas recorded his final INT at the IU 32-yard line with 4:03 remaining. His first pick halted a Wildcat drive at the Indiana 11-yard line in the second quarter. Thomas, who suffered a season-ending knee injury on his second interception vs. the Wildcats, has three interceptions in his career, all against Northwestern, and tripled the team s season total (Nick Polk, one). He became the first Hoosier to collect two interceptions in a game since current New Orleans Saint Tracy Porter picked off Bacher twice in Evanston on Nov. 10, Going The Distance The Hoosiers opened the scoring against Central Michigan with a 13-play, 99-yard drive. It marked Indiana s first 99-yard drive since Oct. 17, 1998, when the team used 15 plays to score six points against Iowa. Senior running back Marcus Thigpen capped the 5:35 drive vs. the Chippewas with a 22-yard scamper. Mistake Free After posting a minus-7 in the turnover battle during its five-game losing streak, the Hoosiers almost completely erased that against Northwestern. Indiana picked off two passes and WEEKLY AWARDS Head coach Bill Lynch awards scout and special teams players of the week following each ballgame. 10 Indiana FOOTBALL The Old Oaken Bucket Game - November 22, recovered three fumbles while not committing a single miscue. The last time IU went without a turnover came in last year s Insight Bowl (Dec. 31) vs. Oklahoma State and the last time the Hoosiers held a plus-5 edge came in a win at Oregon on Sept. 11, Indiana went five games without an interception before junior strong safety Austin Thomas collected two against the Wildcats. Declawing The Cats Northwestern entered last weekend ranked 22nd in the BCS rankings and 24th in the USA Today Coaches Poll. With its victory, Indiana earned its first win over a ranked opponent since topping No. 13 Iowa in Bloomington, 31-28, on Oct. 14, Tyrell Sutton was averaging 5.5 yards per carry and the Hoosier defense held him to just 2.9 yards per rush (27 carries, 77 yards). Quarterback C.J. Bacher averaged passing yards per game and was limited to 155, and the IU defense held the Wildcats to 319 yards, nearly 69 yards under their season average of yards each time out. Additionally, junior defensive ends Jammie Kirlew and Greg Middleton and sophomore defensive tackle Deonte Mack registered one sack apiece against an offensive line that ranked fourth nationally allowing only five sacks in its first seven games. Time Well Spent The Hoosiers closed out the Murray State game with one of their longest drives in recent memory. Getting the ball with 12:21 left on the clock, Indiana used 19 plays and marched 65 yards to close out the ballgame. The last time IU recorded a 19-play drive came against Michigan on Sept. 27, 2003, and the last time a Hoosier drive took at least 10 minutes off the clock came against Iowa on Oct. 8, 1994 (11:16). No Dirty Laundry Indiana did not commit a penalty against Murray State. The last time a Hoosier team did not commit a penalty in a game came back in 1981 against Michigan (Oct. 3). Lewis Earns Big Ten Player of the week Kellen Lewis picked up his fifth career Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honor, the conference announced on Sept. 1. Lewis shared the award with Illinois quarterback Juice Williams. He is the first Hoosier since Antwaan Randle El (six from ) to earn five conference POW honors. Randle El and Anthony Thompson ( ) hold the IU record with six Big Ten weekly accolades. Wisconsin s Ron Dayne ( ) owns the league record with nine player of the week awards. Lynch reaches 90 Hoosier head man Bill Lynch recorded his 90th career victory with the team s 45-3 victory over Murray State. Lynch holds a career mark (.529) in his 16th season, which includes stops at Butler, Ball State and DePauw. He owns a record at Indiana. Thigpen on The Run Andrew Means is not the only Hoosier to excel in two sports. Fifth-year senior running back Marcus Thigpen missed spring practice to participate with the Indiana track and field team. Thigpen qualified for three events at the NCAA Mideast Region Championships. He was a member of the 4x100 relay team that posted its fastest time of the year (40.26) and earned U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Region honors. The team also won a silver medal at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships en route to second team All-Big Ten honors. Thigpen owns a personal-best of in the 100 meters. Hoosiers In The NFL A couple members from the 2007 Hoosiers are currently on NFL rosters. Cornerback Tracy Porter and wide receiver James Hardy, who recorded his first professional touchdown on Sunday, were selected with back-to-back picks in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft. The New Orleans Saints took Porter with the 40th pick, while the Buffalo Bills took Hardy in the 41st slot. Indiana and Michigan were the only two Big Ten teams with multiple selections on the draft s first day. There are currently 13 Hoosiers on 2008 NFL rosters after the Saints signed wide receiver Courtney Roby. In addition to the aforementioned trio, the following Hoosiers are on NFL rosters: Victor Adeyanju (St. Louis), Kris Dielman (San Diego), Trent Green (St. Louis), Aaron Halterman (Miami), Gibran Hamdan (Buffalo), Herana-Daze Jones (Cincinnati), Adewale Ogunleye (Chicago), Antwaan Randle El (Washington), Isaac Sowells (Cleveland) and Chris Taylor (Houston). Staying Home Head coach Bill Lynch has stressed the importance of recruiting Indiana kids and keeping them in the state. The 2008 Hoosier roster proves Lynch is attempting to do just that. Forty-four players on the 105-man roster (41.9 percent) hail from the Hoosier state. In The Classroom Thirty-seven Hoosiers earned GPA s of at least 3.0 in the 2007 spring semester and 41 have cumulative GPA s of 3.0 or higher. North End Zone Update Last year it was just a hole, but this year the foundation is nearly complete. The Memorial Stadium North End Zone Facility is scheduled for completion during the summer of The 100,000 square-foot facility will address several critical needs for IU Athletics. At the heart of the new structure will be a 24,000 square-foot strength and conditioning center, located at field level, providing studentathletes in every varsity sport with access to essential weight training and cardio equipment. Nearby will be the headquarters of the Indiana football program, featuring new staff offices, position meeting rooms and a team auditorium. The facility will also offer increased space for athletic administration offices. In addition, the North End Zone will house the IU Hall of Champions and provide approximately a 5,000-seat bowl. A new 18,000-square foot Academic Resource Center will be housed underneath the East side of the stadium, meeting all the student-athletes needs. 12 Indiana FOOTBALL The Old Oaken Bucket Game - November 22, A native and lifelong Hoosier with 30 years coaching experience in the state, Bill Lynch is in his second year at the helm of the Indiana football program. Lynch completed his first season as IU head coach in 2007, his 15th season overall, leading the Hoosiers to a 7-6 record and a trip to the Insight Bowl. He is the only head coach in Hoosier history to guide a team to a bowl game in his debut season. Lynch led Indiana to its most wins since 1993, its first bowl appearance since that same season and its first Old Oaken Bucket victory since The team s seven victories were the second most for a first-year Indiana head coach, behind only James M. Sheldon, who went in Two of Lynch s 2007 charges were selected on the first day of the NFL Draft. The New Orleans Saints picked cornerback Tracy Porter with the 40th selection, while the Buffalo Bills took wide receiver James Hardy in the 41st slot. IU and Michigan were the only two Big Ten teams with multiple selections on day one and it marked the first time the Hoosiers had two players selected on day one since Porter, Hardy, kicker Austin Starr, quarterback Kellen Lewis and defensive end Greg Middleton each collected All-Big Ten honors. Hardy and Middleton snared first team honors from both the conference coaches and media, while Starr and Porter added first team accolades from the media. The four first-teamers shared second most in the league with Penn State, trailing only Ohio State s six. Lewis was a second team selection by both the conference coaches and media, as Porter and Starr joined him on the coaches ballots. Hardy, Starr and Middleton also received All- America recognition. Hardy and Middleton both collected second team honors from the Walter Camp Football Foundation and third team laurels from the Associated Press, while Starr captured second team status from the AP. Starr was a Lou Groza Award finalist, Middleton was a Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award finalist and Hardy was a Biletnikoff Award semifinalist. In addition to success on the field, Lynch stresses the importance of earning a degree from one of the top academic institutions in the country. Forty-one Hoosiers completed the academic year with cumulative grade point averages of 3.0 or higher. Starr became the sixth IU player to be named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team, while fullback Josiah Sears joined Starr on the Academic All- District V team. Kicker Kevin Trulock received the inaugural Wayne Duke Postgraduate Award, presented by the Indianapolis Big Ten Community Partnership. Lynch signed an agreement on November 26, 2007, to remain head coach through July 1, HEAD COACH BILL LYNCH He was named Indiana s 27th head coach on June 15, Lynch has compiled an record with stops in Bloomington, Butler, Ball State and DePauw. He has won or shared six conference or divisional titles in his 15 seasons. Lynch is in his 32nd overall year, spending 31 of those seasons in the state of Indiana. With the Hoosiers trip to the Insight Bowl, Lynch made his third appearance in a bowl game. He was an assistant under former Hoosier head coach Bill Mallory when Indiana faced Virginia Tech in the 1993 Independence Bowl. Lynch served as the Ball State head coach and led the Cardinals to the 1996 Las Vegas Bowl. Lynch, a 2005 inductee into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame, served as interim head coach for two games in 2006 and led the Hoosiers during 2007 spring practice. During his first two seasons in Bloomington, he was the assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and tight ends coach. This is Lynch s second stint at Indiana, as he was the Hoosiers quarterbacks coach in The veteran coach returned to Bloomington after directing DePauw to an 8-2 record en route to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) co-coach of the Year honors in Lynch was the first coach in SCAC history to earn the award in his debut campaign. DePauw finished 5-1 in league play. Lynch was head coach at Ball State from During his tenure, the Cardinals won at least six games three times, including a 7-4 mark in 1995 and an 8-4 record the following season. The 1995 team posted a 6-2 record and tied for third in the Mid-American Conference (MAC), while Lynch s 1996 team captured the MAC championship at 7-1 and earned a trip to the Las Vegas Bowl. Ball State also staked claim to the 2001 MAC West title after claiming third-place finishes in 1997 and A 1977 Butler graduate and four-year letterwinner in both football and basketball, Lynch quarterbacked the Bulldogs to a overall record and three conference championships. He earned Indiana Collegiate Conference (ICC) Most Valuable Player honors in each of his final three seasons. Lynch led the nation in pass completion percentage in 1975 and captained both sports his senior campaign. Lynch, a three-time Little All-American, became the first Butler student-athlete to twice be named recipient of the prestigious Tony Hinkle Award, presented by the ICC for outstanding scholastic and athletic achievement. He finished his career with 5,909 passing yards and 60 touchdowns. Lynch also set a Butler men s basketball record by handing out 121 assists during the campaign and was inducted into the Butler Hall of Fame in Upon graduation, Lynch spent seven seasons as a Bulldog assistant coach, including stints as the quarterbacks and wide receivers coach, recruiting coordinator and offensive coordinator. He moved on to Northern Illinois as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator in 1984 and was quarterbacks coach of the Orlando Renegades of the United States Football League (USFL) in the winter of The Renegades were coached by former Hoosier head coach Lee Corso. Lynch returned to his alma mater as head coach in 1985 and compiled a record over the next five seasons. Butler won four Heartland Collegiate Conference titles during his tenure, and he won conference Coach of the Year honors on three occasions. Four of Lynch s five squads were ranked among the top 20 in NCAA Division II, and he twice earned AFCA Regional Coach of the Year laurels. He moved on to Ball State as the Cardinals offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from , where he worked with eventual NFL running backs Bernie Parmalee (Miami Dolphins and New York Jets) and Corey Croom (New England Patriots) before his first stint at Indiana.
