The SEC led the nation with more than 6.5 million fans attending games in 2006 and had an average capacity of 96.5 for its home games... In 2006, the SEC was the most competitive conference in the nation with an average scoring margin of in its conference games and more than 61 percent of its conference games decided by 10-points-or-less... Eight SEC players have earned first-team All-America honors in The SEC posted a 6-3 mark in post-season bowl games, the most wins by the SEC in bowls... In the BCS era (since 1998), the SEC has more national championships (three) than any other conference. With Florida s victory over Ohio State, the Gators won their second national championship and the Southeastern Conference s 16th in history. Below are some notes about the SEC, national championships and final polls. The SEC is the only league to currently have four football coaches who have won national championship. Steve Spurrier, South Carolina (won title in 1996 while head coach at Florida) Phillip Fulmer, Tennessee (won title in 1998) Nick Saban, Alabama (won title in 2003 while head coach at LSU) Urban Meyer, Florida (won title in 2006) The Big Ten has three coaches (Jim Tressel, Lloyd Carr and Joe Paterno) while the Big 12 has two coaches (Mack Brown, Bob Stoops). Since the first season of the Bowl Championship Series in 1998, the SEC leads all conferences with three national championships. Tennessee won the BCS first national title in 1998 (Tennessee 23, Florida State 16), LSU won the crown in 2003 (LSU 21, Oklahoma 14) and Florida s win on Jan. 8 against Ohio State. The Big 12 (Oklahoma 2000, Texas 2005) has won two while the ACC (Florida State 1999), Big Ten (Ohio State 2002), Pac-10 (Southern California 2004) and Big East (Miami 2001) have won BCS titles. The SEC had six teams ranked in the final Associated Press poll and five teams ranked in the final USA Today coaches poll. The last time the SEC had six teams ranked in the final poll was in 2000 when the league had six in both AP and USA Today polls. This marks the 10th time in SEC history that six teams have been ranked in the final polls. The most that the SEC has had ranked was seven in the final 1999 and 1965 polls SEC FOOTBALL NOTES The SEC had three teams ranked in the top 10 in the final AP and USA Today polls. This has been done 22 times in history with the latest in 2005 in both polls. The most in the top 10 has been five in the 1971 final UPI poll while the league has had four teams ranked in the final AP poll in 1942, 1952 and This is the fourth year in a row that the SEC has had multiple teams ranked in the final top 10 polls. Since conference expansion in 1992, the SEC has had had least three teams ranked in the top 10 of 88 weekly Associated Press polls, an average of 5.8 polls per year. In every season since 1992, the SEC has had at least one week in a year that three SEC teams have been ranked in the top 10. The SEC finished the bowl season with a 6-3 record. The six wins are the most bowl victories in conference history. The league had won five bowl games six times in history with the latest coming in The SEC edged out the Big East Conference for the highest non-conference winning percentage in Counting bowl games, the SEC was against non-conference foes, an winning percentage. The Big East, with a 5-0 bowl record, finished with a 37-8 non-conference record, which equates to an winning percentage. The SEC had its best non-conference winning percentage since 1997 when it finished with a 37-5 mark (88.10 winning percentage). Florida scored the game s first 17 points until Arkansas scored with 1:55 left in the first half when Casey Dick connected with Marcus Monk for a 48-yard TD reception to make the halftime score, The Razorbacks continued its scoring in the third quarter. Darren McFadden threw a two-yard TD pass to Felix Jones at the 12:06 mark and then the Hogs Antwain Robinson returned an interception 40 yards for another score to put Arkansas ahead, That s when the Gators began their comeback. At the 3:47 mark of the third quarter, Florida s Wondy Pierre-Louis recovered a Reggie Fish fumble punt return in the endzone to put the Gators ahed for good, Percy Harvin added a 67-yard TD run opening the fourth quarter to give the Gators a lead. Arkansas pulled to within three at on a 29-yard TD pass from Cedric Washington to Felix Jones but the Gators responded on a 5-yard TD pass from Andre Caldwell to Tate Casey with nine minutes left to make the final margin, Harvin was named the game s MVP with 105 yards rushing and a TD and five catches for 62 yards and another score. 8 2006 SEC Football Page 8 Final Release THE OBJECTIVE To allow for specific types of officiating calls to be immediately reviewed during all games hosted by SEC teams. THE COACHES CHALLENGE Each head coach is allowed one Instant Replay challenge per game, which is exercised by requesting a team timeout. A head coach may issue a challenge only if his team has one or more timeouts remaining in the half. If the challenged ruling is overturned, the timeout is not charged, but the coach has no more challenges during that game. THE SOURCE All reviewable video comes direct from either the television network broadcasting the game (CBS Sports, ESPN, ESPN2, Lincoln Financial) or other TV production facilities that meet established conference standards. The Southeastern Conference, following approval by the NCAA Football Rules Committee, will implement the use of video reply on an experimental basis beginning with the 2005 football season. THE PLAYS Reviewable 1. Plays governed by Sideline, Goal Line, End Zone, and End Line: a. Scoring Plays, including a runner breaking the plane of the goal line b. Pass complete/incomplete/intercepted at sideline, goal line and end line c. Runner/receiver in or out of bounds [if ruled out of bounds, play is finalized] d. Illegal formations 11. Personal fouls 6. Taunting/excessive celebrations THE PROCESS Each SEC football stadium has a secured replay booth equipped with a DVSport Digital Replay System. Three individuals work in the booth for the duration of the game: 1. Replay Official, 2. Communicator, 3. Technician. The Replay Official is selected and assigned by the Conference Office. A live video feed is sent directly to the replay booth. The Technician watches the feed on an input monitor while capturing/digitizing it into the DVSport Digital Replay System. The Technician also marks the beginning of each play as well as any replays as they occur in real time. Each play and subsequent replay then appears on a touch screen in front of the Communicator. As the Technician marks the incoming video, each view (by mark) will appear as a small picture on the computer touch screen. At any time, the Communicator can touch/click on a thumbnail and immediately send that play/replay to the Replay Official. SEC FOOTBALL VIDEO REPLAY With the Communicator s assistance, the Replay Official can quickly jump between replays while playing back the video. All replay video navigation is done via a remote device controlled by the Replay Official. All replays/video are viewed on an output monitor. The touch screen is only used to select the replays. While most plays are reviewed between the whistle and the beginning of the next play, the Replay Official can stop play on the field by using a pager system. Five onfield officials wear pagers. If play is stopped the Referee announces on the stadium PA microphone that play has been stopped so the previous play can be reviewed. The Referee then proceeds to the sideline headset, which provides direct communication to the Replay Official in the booth. Once the play has been reviewed, the Replay Official notifies the Referee, who then announces the decision on the stadium PA system. THE EQUIPMENT Each SEC member institution uses the Digital Replay System developed by DVSport of Pittsburgh, Pa.
