With his 14 completions against Alabama, Chris Leak has 747 on his career, which is first in school history. Leak is also first on the Florida career attempts list. With the win at Tennessee, Chris Leak became the only starting quarterback in school history to win in Knoxville, against Georgia twice, in Tallahassee, in Baton Rouge and win a bowl game. Chris Leak won his fourth-straight game as a starting quarterback over a Top 25 team with the win at Tennessee. The streak is the longest of his career. He also joined Danny Wuerffel as the only two quarterbacks in school history to defeat UT, UGA and FSU five straight times. Through five games this season, Chris Leak has thrown for 14 touchdowns. The Gators were in their ninth game in 2005 when Leak reached 14 passing TDs. Chris Leak needs 1,365 yards to pass Danny Wuerffel as UF s all-time passing leader and 2,017 to pass Georgia s David Greene as the SEC s all-time leader. Prior to Coach Meyer s arrival, Leak started 22 games and did not throw an interception in eight games. Under Coach Meyer, he has not thrown one in nine of 17 starts. Leak was the only quarterback in the nation last year to lead his team to a top 15 AP finish and throw more than 350 pass attempts and have less than six interceptions. The chart below shows how Chris Leak s accuracy has improved through the years: Year Attempts Interceptions Interception/Attempt Ratio in 29.0 attempts in 33.2 attempts in 62.3 attempts Chris Leak s interception percentage of 1.6 in 2005 tied for the sixth-lowest total in the nation and tied with Notre Dame s Brady Quinn and Tulsa s Paul Smith for the third-highest total among those returning for the 2006 season. This season, Leak is in a position to lead the Gators in passing for the fourth-straight year. Only three UF quarterbacks have done that since 1955 (Danny Wuerffel, ; Kerwin Bell, ; Wayne Peace, ). Of the four, Leak and Wuerffel are the only two to pass for over 2,000 yards in three seasons and Leak is the only one who could do it all four years. Following the game against Alabama, Chris Leak is second in school history and fifth in the SEC in the category of most touchdowns responsible for by a Gator. Leak has been involved in 89 (79 passing, 10 rushing). Chris Leak has a career completion percentage of 61.1, which is tied with Rex Grossman for second on Florida s all-time list. Chris Leak s 25 touchdown passes against teams ranked in the AP top 25 since 2003 are the highest amount by any active quarterback during that time span and his 328 completions and 3,880 passing yards are the most by any player in the nation vs. ranked foes. Chris Leak made his 38th career start against Alabama. Leak now owns a record in starts on the collegiate level. His previous career-high was 322 against Arkansas in The total was Leak s seventh career 300-yard game moving him into a tie with Doug Johnson ( for third on UF s all-time chart (SEE PAGE 12 FOR CHARTS). The Gators are 7-0 when Leak throws for 300-or-more yards in a game. Florida quarterback Chris Leak is in his last 84 games as a starting quarterback. He won 46 in a row at Independence High School and then his first start at Florida (at Kentucky). His 11 losses have been to Ole Miss, Florida State, Iowa (2004 Outback), Tennessee, LSU (twice), Mississippi State, Georgia, Miami (2004 Peach), Alabama, and South Carolina. RUNNING BACKS DeShawn Wynn rushed for 104 yards on 14 carries against Kentucky, giving him back-to-back games with 100-yards rushing for the first time in his career. Prior to the game, Wynn averaged just 56.0 yards following his previous 100-yard performances during his career. With his start for the Gators against Alabama, DeShawn Wynn became the first Florida running back under head coach Urban Meyer to start five consecutive games. DeShawn Wynn and Kestahn Moore combined have averaged 5.4 yards per carry this season and have lost only one fumble. UF running backs averaged 3.9 yards per carry on 279 runs and lost only one fumble in DeShawn Wynn carried the ball 22 times for 104 yards at Tennessee. The effort was the fourth 100-yard performance in Wynn s career. Wynn was the first 100-yard rusher against Tennessee since Carnell Williams (Auburn) ran for 100 in the 2004 SEC title game. For the first time since 2002, the Gators returned their leading rusher from the previous season as DeShawn Wynn returned to the squad after running for 621 yards on 130 attempts in Wynn scored seven of the 10 touchdowns by a UF running back in 2005 and has scored two of the three by UF running backs this year. The Florida running back unit returned only one upperclassman running back who carried the ball the previous season for the second time in three years (DeShawn Wynn). UF has been out-rushed in 35 of the 44 games it has lost. The Gators have posted a record when they hold an opponent to less than 100 team rushing yards. UF is 27-4 in games in which it blocks a punt. The Gators are in games played in the state of Florida (91-11 in Gainesville, 13-2 in Jacksonville, 2-1 in Orlando, 1-0 in Miami, in Tallahassee, 1-2 in Tampa) vs. unranked teams at game time. In 2005, the Gators started four different running backs (Markus Manson, Kestahn Moore, Skyler Thornton, DeShawn Wynn). Wynn got the majority of the starts at running back with six, while Moore started three and Manson started two. Since 1996, there has only been one time a running back has led the Gators in rushing yards in back-to-back seasons (Earnest Graham, ). 8 WHAT S NEW WITH THE GATORS... The most rushing yards by an Urban Meyer running back in a season was 976 (on 237 carries) by Utah s Brandon Warfield in The running backs that return from last season (Wynn, Manson, Moore) combined for 1,263 yards on 259 carries. The Gators ground game averaged yards per game in 2005 and ranked fifth in the SEC. The total was the second-highest since the 1996 season (2004, 155.8). The unit also averaged 3.9 yards per carry, which was the highest amount by a first-year offense under Coach Meyer. In addition, UF ran for 19 touchdowns in 2005, equaling the total from Meyer s first offense at Bowling Green (2002). WIDE RECEIVERS AND TIGHT ENDS Jemalle Cornelius has had 14 catches for 285 yards for an average of 20.4 yards per catch this season. He is one of 19 players nationally to have an average of 20.4 yards-or-more this year. Dallas Baker caught a 21-yard touchdown against Alabama to raise his total for the season to five (T12 nationally). He has caught a touchdown in six of the last seven games. Baker had five touchdowns his entire sophomore and junior seasons. Against Southern Miss, Percy Harvin became the first true freshman wide receiver in school history to start a season opener. Dallas Baker returned to the squad after an Outback Bowl MVP performance in which he set career highs in catches (10) and yardage (147). Baker is the fifth player in school history to be named the MVP of a bowl game the Gators won and return to the squad for the next season (Larry Smith, Emmitt Smith, Travis Taylor, Taylor Jacobs). The list below is how they performed the next season: Player Bowl MVP Following Season Stats Larry Smith 1967 Orange 205 att., 754 yds., 8 TDs (1967 season) Emmitt Smith 1988 All-American 284 att., 1,599 yds, 14 TDs (1989 season) Travis Taylor 1999 Orange 34 rec., 463 yds., 6 TDS (1999 season) Taylor Jacobs 2002 Orange 71 rec., 1,088 yds., 8 TDs (2002 season) True sophomore Nyan Boateng underwent surgery to repair damage to his right ankle Sept. 21. Boateng is expected to return four to five weeks from the date of the surgery. Redshirt junior Andre Caldwell returned to the unit this season after he fractured the femur bone in his right leg while returning the second-half kickoff against Tennessee in 2005 causing him to miss the remainder of the season. At the time of his injury, he was second among Gator receivers averaging 14.8 yards per game. Under the guidance of position coach Billy Gonzales, the leading receiver on the squad has equaled or set a new school record for receptions and for the last five years the leading receiver on the team has averaged nearly 80 receptions a season (79.8). OFFENSIVE LINE Florida has started every game of the 2006 season with the following at offensive line: LT Phil Trautwein; LG Jim Tartt; C Steve Rissler; RG Drew Miller; RT Carlton Medder. The offensive line has allowed nine sacks through the first five games. Last season, UF had allowed 20 after five games. Against Alabama, Florida only allowed one sack marking the second time this season UF has given up one or less. The Gators accomplished that feat only two times in 2005 combined. Only one player (Jim Tartt) on the offensive line entered the 2006 season with a start at their current position. Tartt started the Kentucky game at left guard last season. In University of Florida records dating back to 1980, Florida s 17 combined starts on the offensive line entering the 2006 season are the lowest since that time. Florida has no fifth-year seniors up front and only two fourth-year players (Steve Rissler and Carlton Medder). Florida starting center Steve Rissler and starting right guard Drew Miller both attended Sarasota s Riverview High School. In research dating back to 1982, there have been no two members of Florida s starting offensive line during a season from the same high school. Four members of the starting offensive line for the season opener were from the state of Florida. In the last 11 seasons, four members of the starting day offensive line have been from the state of Florida on seven occasions. Redshirt freshman Ronnie Wilson suffered a broken left ankle during August practices. Wilson underwent surgery on August 12 and will return to practice the week of the Alabama game RULE CHANGES FOR 2006 REGARDING THE CLOCK The clock will start on kickoffs as soon as the kicker s foot hits the ball. When the ball changes hands, by kick or turnover, the clock will start as soon as the ball is ready for play, not at the snap. When a team is awarded a first down, the clock will be stopped and will start on the ready for play signal. INSTANT REPLAY For the 2006 season, the rules committee is allowing several varying systems to implement video replay, as determined by each conference or institution. Each head coach is allowed one Instant Replay challenge per game, which is exercised by requesting a team timeout. A head coach may issue a challenge only if his team has one or more timeouts remaining in the half. If the challenged ruling is overturned, the timeout is not charged, but the coach has no more challenges during that game. Plays that MAY be reviewed: 1. Governed by sideline, goal line and end line: a) Scoring plays, including a runner breaking the plane of the goal line. b) Pass complete/incomplete/intercepted at sideline, goal line and end line. c) Runner/receiver in or out of bounds. d) Recovery of loose ball in bounds. 2. Passing Plays: a) Pass ruled complete/incomplete/intercepted in the field of play and end zones. b) Touching of a forward pass by an ineligible receiver. c) Touching of a forward pass by a defensive player. d) Quarterback (passer) forward pass or fumble (if ruled incomplete, the play is finalized). e) Illegal forward pass or illegal handing beyond the line of scrimmage. f) Illegal forward pass or illegal handing after change of possession. g) Forward or backward pass thrown from behind the line of scrimmage. 3. Other detectable infractions: a) Runner ruled not down. b) Forward progress errors with respect to first down. c) Touching of a kick. d) Number of players on field. e) Clock adjustments. f) Fourth-down/try fumble plays. 9 WHAT S NEW WITH THE GATORS... THE DEFENSE The UF defense has allowed SEC opponents to gain only 1.5 yards per carry this season. After not having a sack in the season opener, UF has had 13 sacks in the last four games. The total ranks in a tie with California for 12th since Florida s second game of the year on Sept. 9. Florida has not allowed a fourth-quarter touchdown this season and has allowed only one rushing TD this year. UF is one of 13 teams to allow one or less nationally and one of three in the SEC. In the game against Alabama, UF had three interceptions returned for 100 yards. The total was the highest for the Gators since returning three for 102 yards against Florida State on Nov. 25, In its last outing, the Florida defensive unit did not give up a touchdown. The effort marked the second time in five games this year that UF did not allow the opposing offense to score (vs. UCF). In the game against Kentucky, Florida limited the Wildcats to 39 rushing yards, which was the thirdlowest total in the Rich Brooks era. The Gator defense did not give up a play of 20-or-more yards to UK. Florida s defense limited Tennessee to -11 yards on 23 carries. The total was the lowest rushing performance in the 168 games Phillip Fulmer has coached in Knoxville. The total ranks as the seventh-lowest allowed by a Florida defense in school history and the fifth-lowest to an SEC team. Returning to the defense were DE Joe Cohen, DT Marcus Thomas, DT, Steven Harris, LB Brandon Siler, LB Earl Everett, and Reggie Nelson and Kyle Jackson who split time at FS. Departing were DE Jeremy Mincey, LB Todd McCullough, SS Jarvis Herring, CB Vernell Brown and CB Dee Webb. The Florida defense has held its opponent s top rusher to under 100 yards in 24 of the last 29 games. The Gators have held opponents under 100 yards net rushing in 12 of the last 16 wins dating back to the 2004 season. In the last 42 games, the Gators have scored points off turnovers in 31 games. 109 of UF s points in 2005 came off turnovers (31.7 percent). The Gators ranked third nationally in turnover margin in 2005, while Urban Meyer-coached teams rank second nationally during the last six years in turnover margin (+67) after forcing 159 turnovers and committing just 92 in 64 games. Brandon Siler and Earl Everett returned after leading the team in tackles in each of the past two years. Siler became the second true freshman in school history to do so when he totaled 77 in 2004, and Everett led the squad with 72 in The last time UF returned two players that led the squad in tackles in previous seasons was 2001 when Marquand Manuel (118, 1999) and Todd Johnson (102, 2000) were on the roster. Freshman A.J. Jones and sophomore Jon Demps have suffered injuries that will affect the depth at the position. Demps suffered an ACL tear in his left knee in preseason drills, while Jones suffered a fracture in his right foot on Monday, Aug. 28. Both injuries occurred during non-contact drills. DEFENSIVE LINE Against Alabama, the UF defensive line opened the game with Ray McDonald and Jarvis Moss at defensive ends. McDonald moved back outside a week after playing defensive tackle against Kentucky for the first time of the season. Joe Cohen and Javier Estopinan started at DT. It was the first start of Estopinan s career. Derrick Harvey and Marcus Thomas lead the team with 3.0 sacks each. Harvey finished the 2005 season with only one sack.
