Quoting Coach Pflugrad: His numbers the past two seasons speak for themselves. Chase will also be a tremendous asset for us in the passing game. To say he is under-used is probably inaccurate, but we are going to use him in a few different ways. I d like to increase his pass receptions by 50 percent. He does a great job catching the football, and he can turn and run quickly, and he s a lot like a wide receiver out there. He is a great leader and is on the leadership council that we formed. He s done a great job of telling us his thoughts about our football program, and I have really enjoyed getting to know him. Rushing Year G/S Att. Net Yds. Avg. Birth date: September 12, Quoting Coach Pflugrad: What I saw with Andrew was just the ability to get better every week. In the Idaho State game he probably didn t play a super game, but the fourth quarter of that game I wouldn t trade him for anybody in that fourth quarter. When he had to make big plays, he made huge plays. He is another great leader for us, on and off the football field. He was at Hellgate (High School) doing a lot student-teaching, and we actually missed him being on campus; because he is such a great ambassador not only for our football program, but for the entire university. He cares about his teammates. He s become a coach on the field, which is very, very important. He is also part of our leadership council and has done a great job in that area. 4 Buck Buchanan Award Candidate Trumaine Johnson Junior Cornerback 6-3, 197, 2V Stockton, California Edison High School 2 Quoting Coach Pflugrad: He really is a talented athlete. The one thing that Tru really needs to work on is just his consistency in practices, which obviously leads to the games. I don t think Tru was challenged enough this spring as a defensive back. It gets to the point that sometimes things are just too easy for him, and that s not good. We have to do a better job coaching him and make it tougher on him. We cannot let him have any lapses in the physical or mental part of his game. If he doesn t have any lapses he will be as good of a player who has ever been here. And that s on him. That is totally up to Tru. Playing him offensively, there is no question we will do that. How much he can handle, physically and mentally, we are still sifting through that process. He can do some things with the football that not a lot of players in the Big Sky Conference can do. He has not played on special teams here at Montana, and he needs to. He could become a great special teams player. If you wrap all that up that s a pretty impressive player. Montana: Trumaine is a major talent, and this season may be used on offense and on special teams to better utilize his skills. He begins his junior year ranked tied for 17th in school history with nine career interceptions. 2009: He had team-highs of five interceptions and 12 pass deflections in 11 games (he missed four contests due to injury). He would be ranked first (tie) in the league in pass deflections (1.09 pg) and second in interceptions (0.45 pg), but because he did not play in the NCAA-required 75 percent (he played in 11 of 15, or 73.3%) of UM s games, he did not qualify for the national rankings. Tru was fourth on the team with 31 solo tackles a year ago. He is the team s fourth leading returning tackler in 2010 with 54 stops last season. He was a first team All-Big Sky Conference selection. He was named the Sports Network s co-national Player of the Week on defense on Sept. 12th because of his outstanding play (six tackles and two interceptions) in a victory at UC Davis. He was also named the Big Sky s POW on defense that week. 2008: He was a rare starter as a true freshman, which is especially unique at the cornerback position. He started in Montana s first 11 games and was a Big Sky honorable mention selection. Johnson tied for the team lead with four interceptions and tied for sixth in the Big Sky with.36 picks a game. He suffered an injury against Idaho State on Nov. 15th and was unable to play after that. High School: He had an outstanding season at quarterback as a senior, passing for 1,800 yards (with just 5 interceptions), rushing for 500 yards, and scoring 22 total touchdowns. He was named first team allleague at quarterback and at defensive back following his senior year. He was voted to his high school s football Hall of Fame at defensive back. As a junior he was first team all-league at wide receiver with 750 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. He was also chosen his team s MVP as a junior in football. His high school football coach was Elliot Burke. He also earned three letters in basketball. As a senior in hoops he was team captain, team MVP, and an all-conference pick. Career Highs: He had a career-high eight tackles and tied a career mark with two interceptions in a home win over 19th-ranked Weber State last season. He also had two interceptions against Southern Utah in Personal: Parents: Lynn Stallworth and Curtis Johnson of Stockton. His major is sociology. Career Highs: He had five tackles in playoff wins against Stephen F. Austin and Appalachian State last season. Personal: His stepfather is Dan Love of Spokane. He is a marketing major. Birth date: October 27, Quoting Coach Pflugrad: Tyler had an excellent spring. When we had our staff meetings he was the one guy who just stood out. He worked hard every day, including going back to winter conditioning where he was tough on the freshmen. He was tough on the freshmen to get them going, but he was fair and a good teacher. Back to his spring effort he was just off the charts. He needs to keep that enthusiasm and fire into fall camp. He is a fun, fun player to be around. He does a great job as a student host in recruiting. He is on our leadership council, and I appreciate what he does in that area. Year G/S UT AT TT Sacks TFL Int. He brings a toughness to that position and to our football team. Our players trust him, and that is incredibly important as a kicker. I like the fact that he is gaining a little bit of weight, not a whole bunch, but a little bit; because we can t get to the point where we ve got to keep taking him out when they are running the football. He s as good of an athlete as we have on our football team. If he can stop the run and continue to improve his pass rush, I think there is no limit for him. I am excited about his potential going into his senior season. He was one of the keys to Montana s nationally ranked offense that was second in the Football Championship Subdivision in scoring (35.8 ppg), ninth in total offense (427.0 ypg), and 14th in passing offense (267.2 ypg). He was an honorable mention All-Big Sky Conference selection. 2008: He saw action in several games as a true freshman, playing on both the offensive line and on special teams. High School: He earned three letters in football, three in basketball, and two in track at Milwaukie High School. He was chosen his team s Outstanding Offensive Lineman of the Year as a senior, when he started both ways. His high school football coach was Roland Aumueller. Opperud served as a team captain in football, basketball, and track. He was team MVP and all-league in basketball as a senior when he averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds a game. He was also MVP and a second team all-state pick in track his senior year, and he placed fourth in the state in the discus. He was the conference champion in the discus and shot put in Personal: His parents are Jon and Gail Opperud of Portland. His major is business. Birth date: Feb. 13, Quoting Coach Pflugrad: Jon has moved out to tackle, which is a totally different position than guard. At guard last year he had (center) Alex Verlanic and (tackle) Levi Horn, two outstanding veterans helping him. Now he doesn t have any help, and he s on his own. I like the way he s approached his new position move mentally, putting in extra meeting and film time. He understands that you have to do it mentally first, and then the physical part of it comes. I think he was a solid player last year and we are looking for improvement from him. I think that he will have to be a great player for us to have success this fall. Montana: Alex will be starting at the will linebacker position for the second season in a row. He is the Grizzlies second-leading returning tackler. 2009: He started all 15 contests and was the team s fourth-leading tacker with 79 stops. He had two forced fumbles which tied with defensive tackle Austin Mullins for the second most on the team. He had five or more tackles in seven games. He was an All-Big Sky Conference academic team pick, maintaining a 3.65 GPA. 2008: He played in 12 contests as a true freshman, garnering 15 tackles, which ranked him 23rd on the team. High School: He was Washington s 4A co-player of the Year as a senior for his state champion Lewis and Clark High School team which had a record of He lettered four times in track and field, and three times in both football and basketball. He was a first team all-state at linebacker, and all-conference at running back and at linebacker his senior year. His senior season he rushed for 1,655 yards, including an impressive 793 yards on 151 carries in state playoff games. He rushed for 176 yards and was voted the Player of the Game in the state championship against Bothell High School. He was a three-time all-league pick in football. He was the Greater Spokane League shot put (55-0) champion as a junior and member of winning 4x100 relay team. He was team captain in football as a junior and senior. He lettered three times in football, basketball, and track. His prep football coach was Tom Yearout. Career Highs: He had 10 tackles, a tackle for loss, and a pass deflection in UM s FCS semifinal win over Appalachian State last season. He had an 11-yard interception return against Idaho State in Personal: His parents are Carl and Diane Shaw of Spokane. His major is business (finance). Birth date: June 28, Quoting Coach Pflugrad: As I watched our highlight tape from last season, Alex shows up quite a few times with some huge hits and great plays. I think the number one thing Alex needs to work on is the consistency of his open-field tackling, as does every defensive player. Some days this past spring he was very good, and other days he was not. Now-a-days, with all of the spread offenses and people in space, that s how you win games on defense, open-field tackling. If he can do that, and then add in the intangibles like his leadership abilities, I don t think there is a limit on how good of a player he can be. He is a great person, and he is going to be a great asset for the Grizzlies. He is very excited to run out of that tunnel and play football for the Griz. He probably dreamed about it growing up, as a grandson and a son of Grizzly players. I ll tell you what, he wants to be better than both his grandfather and his father, and I really appreciate that part about it. If he can stay healthy, and we can continue to help him get better, he will have an outstanding career here at Montana. Year G/S UT AT TT Sacks TFL / Year G/S Int. His junior track squad won the state championship. Personal: He is a business (finance) major. His parents are Pat and Cari Verlanic of Drummond. Birth date: October 21, Quoting Coach Pflugrad: Alex is a very good leader for us. He is also on our leadership council and has done a great job there. We call him the old man, as he s one of our veterans. It is important for us for him to stay healthy. He needs a healthy body to maximize his physical abilities. I am excited about the fact that he will be the guy now to get the offensive line all on the same page. I really think he s the guy for the job. He puts in a lot of extra time in meetings and watching video, and it shows. We challenged him after spring ball. We thought he could have played a little better in the spring. He s working very hard in the summer, and I am sure that he will be more consistent this fall Grizzly Football 38

He is the Grizzlies fifth leading returning tackler. 2009: He had a break-out season and played in all 15 games. He was ranked ninth on the team with 45 tackles, despite not starting. Quoting Coach Pflugrad: Waldo is one of those guys who has that Ever-ready bunny mentality he never quits, never gives up, and just keeps on ticking. He and B-Dod (cornerback Bruce Dodson) are the two guys on defense who never give up on a play. I think he is going to cause some turnovers, strip some balls out of some wideouts and some tight ends hands, who are not going to expect him to be there. I think he is going to be there, because he a great finisher. To be a great player you have to be a great finisher. Year G/S UT AT TT Sacks TFL / (-26) 4 (-27) Year G/S Int. PB FR FF Blk / Montana: Sean has the talent to be one of the premier punters in the Football Championship Subdivision. 2009: He started in all 15 games and was one of the leading punters in the Big Sky Conference and the FCS. He was ranked 15th (tie) in the nation in punting, averaging yards per punt. Of his 58 punts, 17 or 29 percent of his attempts were inside the opponents 20-yard line. He had 12 punts 50 yards or longer. He was named to the Big Sky s honorable mention team. He had a punt blocked by South Dakota State in an FCS first round contest. Quoting Coach Pflugrad: He s a typical punter. I asked him after spring drills if he d ever consider helping us play a little at safety or another position, and you know he looked at me like I was crazy. Anyway, we ll keep him at punter. He does a nice job, and I still think he can be more consistent. Just getting to last fall, and those types of things, maybe affected him early on; and he got better as the year went on. He had a nice spring. He s more in his comfort zone now. He and Coach Arbuckle have built a very strong relationship in a short amount of time. Year Punts Yds. Avg.
