7 THE HOME OF THE BEARS Completed: 2003 (5th season) Seating Capacity: 5,300 (3,500 home stands - 1,800 visitor stands) Record Capacity: 7,500 (9/28/07 St. Joseph vs. Lakeshore) (SJ won 21-3) Surface: Natural Grass Record at Dickinson Stadium: First game: September 12, 2003 St. Joseph 34, Kalamazoo Central 13 Press Box Phone: (269) The old Dickinson Stadium In the mid 1940's the St. Joseph School system acquired the title to a 40 acre parcel of land known as the Dickinson Estate. The area is where the current high school now stands. Around that same time the citizens of St. Joseph recognized the need for a new athletic and recreation area. The St. Joe football team played their games at Wells field (where Jefferson elementary currently sits). There was no parking for the fans, except on the neighboring streets, and the wooden grandstands were in danger of collapse. It was then that the St. Joe residents got the ball rolling for a new facility. After receiving numerous recommendations by various experts, the planning committee, commissioned architect Robert V. Knox to develop the sketches and conceptual drawings of the stadium. The Board of Education would take these plans to the various service clubs around St. Joseph to rally the community involvement in the project, Every group that were presented the plans went on record as supporting it. The voters overwhelmingly passed the $170,000 bond proposal on July 25, 1949 for the new stadium and track. A little over a year later, on September 22, 1950, the original Dickinson Stadium opened. Dickinson Stadium held it's last event on October 19, In the 51 year history of the stadium it was the home to thousands of events, including football games, track meets, soccer games, band competitions, and commencement ceremonies. The new Dickinson Stadium The idea for a new stadium came about when a commission was charged with reviewing and making recommendations on the future of the facilities of the St. Joseph Public School system for the next years. After a review of the old stadium it was determined that to bring the stadium's aging and deteriorating steel support and infrastructure up to code would be a very expensive project. The commission visited newly constructed high schools around the Midwest and made recommendations for the St. Joe schools, including a new football stadium. In March of 2001 a plan for a bond proposal was presented to the St. Joe taxpayers, which not only included the new stadium, but also a new athletic fieldhouse and other various projects at the high school, and a new auxiliary gym, offices, library and orchestra room at Upton Middle School. The bond issue passed on September 25, 2001, less than a month later, the last game at the old Dickinson Stadium would be played and demolition would begin. While construction continued during the 2002 football season the varsity team played their "Home" games at Lakeshore's Al Stockman Stadium, Benton Harbor's Filstrup Field and at Bridgman High School. Upton Middle School was the home site for the JV and Freshmen teams. The new stadium still has one feature from the old stadium, and that is the electronic scoreboard/message center that was installed prior to the 1998 season. The scoreboard was dismantled and moved from it's previous location to where it currently stands. The stadium now also has an 8 lane running track, the old stadium had 7 and only 6 were useable. The first games were played on Thursday, September 4th, by the Freshman and JV teams who gave the stadium it's first shakedown before the Grand Opening a week later. The official dedication was prior to the game between St. Joseph and Kalamazoo Central which St. Joe won Less than a year after the opening, the new Dickinson Stadium had the honor of hosting country music and TV star Reba McIntyre for a performance benefiting Harbor Habitat for Humanity, The concert was part of Reba's 2004 tour which was sponsored by Whirlpool Corporation. The concert was held in front of a sold out crowd of over 6,500 on July 20, The Upton Middle School teams normally play their home games at Koontz Field at Upton Middle School, but the 8 th grade teams will play their final home game of the season at Dickinson Stadium which will become their new home field as Freshmen St. Joseph Bears Football Kalamazoo Central at St. Joseph 10/19/07 Page 7 of 32

10 GAME RECAP 8/24/07 ST. JOSEPH 33, BATTLE CREEK HARPER CREEK 0 HARPER CREEK STADIUM The Bears Ryan Bock runs away from the Beaver defenders in the Bears 33-0 win over Harper Creek. (Bill Schalk photo) (Battle Creek) Junior transfer Ryan Bock was slated to be the Bears backup running back this season, but an injury to starting running back Drake Smith put Bock into the spotlight in his first game with the Bears. Bock rushed for 124 yards on 24 carries, which by itself would have been a great accomplishment. It was the 4 touchdowns he scored that really made the night special. Bock scored on touchdown runs of 1, 5, 25, and 1 yards. St. Joseph controlled both sides of the ball against Harper Creek, limiting the Beavers to just 158 yards of total offense. St. Joe finished the night with 344 yards total (218 rushing, 126 passing). Senior quarterback Ethan Schweir completed 10 of 13 passes for 126 yards. Schweir s only mistake came on an interception in the final moments of the first half. Junior wide receiver J. Nimtz made his presence felt in both the running game, passing attack, and special teams. Nimtz caught 4 passes for 45 yards, rushed twice for 37 yards. But the big play was a 58 yard punt return for a touchdown early in the third quarter to put the game out of reach for the Beavers. St. Joe s defense also got into the act as 17 different players recorded at least one tackle in the game. Justin Puckett, one of the Bears captains, led St. Joe with 5 tackles. Senior Mike Mavis had 4 tackles and a sack, and Johnny Schweir also recorded 4 tackles for St. Joe. During the Bears game with Harper Creek a year ago, the game was delayed for an hour at halftime because of lightning in the area. It almost seems fitting that last Friday s game would also have an extended halftime. A power failure at Harper Creek Stadium put the second half in jeopardy. When it looked as though the game couldn t be completed because of the power failure, officials from both schools had agreed to resume the game on Saturday morning at 11 AM at Vicksburg High School. As the media in the pressbox were being informed of the decision to resume the game on Saturday, St. Joseph s players were starting to load up on the buses. Within seconds, the power was restored at the stadium. After giving St. Joe a chance to get ready for the second half and for the lights to warm back up the game resumed after a 30 minute delay. 11 GAME RECAP 8/30/07 ST. JOSEPH 21, MARSHALL 13 MARSHALL STADIUM (Marshall) In a game that the statistics favored Marshall. The one stat ended up costing the Redhawks, was turnovers, as St. Joseph defeated the Redhawks last Thursday night at Marshall Stadium. The Redhawks fumbled the ball 6 times and lost 4 of those. Two of those four fumbles proved to be the killing blow to Marshall. With the Bears leading 14-7 in the third quarter, Marshall Quarterback Jeff Lough fumbled the ball at the Marshall 12 yard line where it was recovered by St. Joseph. Just one play later, junior Ryan Bock scored his third touchdown of the game to put the Bears ahead With the Bears lead cut to 21-13, Marshall had two fourth quarter possessions end prematurely with fumbles by Maurice Ansley and the most costly by QB Jeff Lough. With just under 90 seconds left, Junior Lineman Matt Mattox ran down Lough from behind and knocked the ball loose, the Bears would recover the ball and run out the clock giving the Bears a 2-0 start and the Bears first ever win over Marshall. Junior RB Ryan Bock ran for two touchdowns of 73 and 12 yards, he also caught a 52 yard screen pass for a touchdown. Bock now has seven touchdowns in two games for the Bears. He rushed for 123 yards, he second straight game going over the century mark. Senior Brett Virgil made all three of his extra point attempts Mike Curtis made 10 tackles for the Bears and assisted on 4 others, Sophomore Devonte Jones had 8 tackles, Mike Mavis and Robbie Schuler had 7 tackles. Kristopher Hickman had 2 sacks for the Bears. After traveling 312 miles round trip for two games, the Bears return home to Dickinson Stadium on Friday night to face Portage Northern. 12 GAME RECAP 9/7/07 ST. JOSEPH 41, PORTAGE NORTHERN 3 DICKINSON STADIUM (St. Joseph) The only thing that could slow down the Bears was the 15 minute delay at the start of the game because of transportation issues encountered by Portage Northern s team bus. During the first two games, the story of the Bears offense was the ground attack, led by junior running back Ryan Bock. The Bears offense against Northern turned to the air attack as St. Joe gained 207 yards passing in the first half as St. Joe beat Portage Northern 41-3 on Friday night at Dickinson Stadium. The Bears Brad Guinane scores the first of his two touchdowns during St. Joe s 41-3 win over Portage Northern. (Dorinne Guinane photo) The Bears would score on their first possession of the game as Ethan Schweir found J. Nimtz for a 60 yard touchdown pass. Nimtz made the catch after the ball was tipped by a Northern defender and never broke stride for the touchdown. The Bears would extend the lead late in the first quarter as Schweir found Brett Virgil for an 8 yard touchdown pass. Northern would get on the board in the second quarter with a 28 yard field goal by Bill Cremeans. St. Joe would score again on a 23 yard touchdown pass from Schweir to Brad Guinane to put the Bears up 20-3 at the half. The Bears ground game continued the assault in the third quarter as Ryan Bock had 2 touchdown runs from 2 and 11 yards out. Bock finished with 119 yards rushing on 19 carries. His third 100+ rushing effort of the season. St. Joe would close out the scoring in the fourth quarter as sophomore backup quarterback Sean Guinane would find his brother Brad in the endzone for a 15 yard touchdown pass to give the Bears the 41-3 lead midway through the fourth quarter. The MHSAA 35 point mercy rule would be in effect the rest of the game as St. Joe beat Portage Northern for the second year in a row and move to 3-0 on the year. The Bears will host 2-1 Battle Creek Central next at Dickinson Stadium, the Bears defeated the Bearcats a year ago. 13 GAME RECAP 9/14/07 ST. JOSEPH 19, BATTLE CREEK CENTRAL 18 DICKINSON STADIUM (St. Joseph) -- It's only fitting that the rematch of St. Joseph's dramatic season opening victory a year ago would end up as a battle to the very end. Like last year, it was St. Joseph who emerged victorious with a win over Battle Creek Central on Friday night. The Bears would get on the board first as St. Joe would go on a 16 play drive that would end up with a 1 yard touchdown pass from Ethan Schweir to Brett Virgil that put the Bears up 6-0. The visitors would take a 7-6 lead on the ensuing drive as Bill Young would score on a 41 yard run.
