6 2007 ULM Warhawks Season Preview Expectations are running high for the 2007 ULM Warhawks. ULM is coming off of a solid season that saw the Warhawks win three of their last four games of the season and lead the league in total offense, pass offense, and turnover margin. The Warhawks also led the league in takeaways. Our goals for 2007 are to win the Sun Belt Conference championship and earn an automatic bid to the New Orleans Bowl in December, said ULM head coach Charlie Weatherbie. The experienced players coming back and a strong incoming class have us really excited about this season. Weatherbie is excited about the possibilities for 2007 with the return of 11 starters on offense and six on defense. Seven starters are returning all-sun Belt Conference honorees, including 2006 Sun Belt rushing champion Calvin Dawson and Outland Trophy candidate Kyle Cunningham. If we keep healthy and improve in all areas, we can come out and play every week like we are capable of playing, continued Weatherbie. The experience we have coming back, especially on offense, gives us the opportunity to be successful. Offense Offensive Line Going into the 2007 football season, five names in the ULM starting line-up will be very familiar the guys in the trenches on the offensive front line. For the second season in a row, Cunningham, Aaron Schutz, Adam Hill, Patrick Avinger, and Shappley are expected to line-up to protect Lancaster and open holes for Dawson. Seniors Cunningham and Hill have started 34 consecutive games for the Warhawks dating back to the first game of their freshman season in Cunningham has anchored the left tackle position for three seasons, while Hill became the starting center in 2006 after two seasons at right guard. It is a big difference having the experience from when we came in as freshmen, said Hill. We can work on more finesse, while the rest of the group is working on getting more reps. Avinger, the third senior on the line, was a starter as a freshman in 2004, then earned a starting position in 2006 at right guard after experimenting at center. Juniors Schutz and Shappley have started 21 consecutive games for ULM since the start of their freshman year in That streak ended when Shappley, the right tackle, suffered a knee injury against Kentucky in Schutz, the left guard, brings a 23-game starting streak into the 2007 season, while Shappley is expected to pick up where he left off following successful rehabilitation. We have great camaraderie, said Cunningham. We are always together. If you see one of us, there is sure to be another offensive lineman close by. The experience and camaraderie shows on the field and the upperclassmen are making sure that those coming after them are ready to fill in when needed. One of the primary goals heading into 2007 is to create depth behind the experienced linemen, sustaining momentum for changing situations. Underclassmen are expected to be ready to step into any situation when given the call to spell the first five. ULM has a solid group of candidates fighting for time at all five positions, while learning from the veterans. Freshmen Doug Stroud, Josh Andrews, Andrew Stout, Brent Knotts, and sophomore Brett Thompson, along with senior Brent Gregston, took advantage of their opportunities during the spring at the guard positions to make an impression on the ULM staff. Junior Kyle Kersten and senior Joseph Joseph received some prime experience at tackle while Shappley spent the spring in rehab. Freshman A.J. DeGroot will work at the center position. Running Backs ULM is counting on Dawson to continue where he left off at the end of the 2006 season. Dawson ran for 1,210 yards last season, earning several Sun Belt and Louisiana weekly honors along the way. I see our group being better in 2007, said Dawson. For me personally, I will have to be more patient to have another strong season. Dubbed Taz by the local media for the way he spins off of defenders, Dawson brings three years of solid experience to the running back corps. The experience will be needed as the Warhawks break in redshirt freshmen Frank Goodin and Tay Ogletree. Our unit will carry on from 2006, said Dawson. We are just going to get better at every aspect of the position running, blocking, and catching. Goodin and Ogletree saw significant time during the spring. Both had solid performances in the Annual Maroon & Gold Spring Game. Goodin ran for 77 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries, while Ogletree ran for 90 yards and a touchdown on five carries. Other running backs making their presence known in the last year include Gary Frazier, Chavous McWhorter, and Quinton West. Frazier saw playing time in 2006 as a fullback, blocking for Dawson and graduated senior Erroll Hogan. McWhorter has recovered from a knee injury suffered in the fall and continued rehabilitation in the spring. West was moved to running back in the spring from his original receiver position. Quarterbacks After spending a season behind Sun Belt Player of the Year Steven Jyles, Kinsmon Lancaster took what he learned and began to make his mark as another in an extensive line of successful ULM quarterbacks. Lancaster was the second-best producer in the Sun Belt in total offense with 2,122 yards in 12 games. Going into the 2007 season, Lancaster has taken on the role of teacher to redshirt freshman Trey Revell. Trey is helping me learn to be a better quarterback while Iʼm teaching him at the same time, said Lancaster. We are learning from each otherʼs mistakes. Lancaster put up 1,789 yards through the air and was the third-leading rusher on the team with 333 yards in He had one of the biggest games of his young career on Sept. 9, 2006, at Kansas. Lancaster recorded 407 yards of total offense, including 377 passing, to earn Sun Belt Player of the Week honors for that game. After a rough start to the season, Lancaster led the Warhawks to three key Sun Belt wins in the last four games of the season. The fourth game in that stretch was a tough loss to bowl-bound Kentucky. Revell spent the 2006 season on the sideline carrying a clipboard and sending in signals while he adjusted to the college game. Everything is coming to me much faster this spring after spending a season watching and learning, said Revell. I have the advantage of having a veteran offense to learn from as I get ready for the fall. Quarterbacks Beau Ferguson and Al Lewis will battle for time after spending the 2006 season as scout team quarterbacks ULM Football

7 2007 ULM Warhawks Season Preview Receivers What a difference a year makes. The receiving position, one of the most inexperienced groups in 2006, is now one of the most experienced groups on the offense. The group of veteran wide outs spent the spring working on consistency for continuing to make big plays. All-Sun Belt second team pick La- Gregory Sapp leads the group into the new season. Sapp, a junior, led the Warhawks with 796 yards and three touchdowns on 43 receptions, leading the Sun Belt with 18.5 yards per reception. We have to increase our goals, said Sapp. We have to be more intense and we need to be playmakers. Junior J.J. McCoy and sophomore Darrell McNeal chipped in from the other two starting positions with over 200 yards receiving each. McCoy had his 2006 season cut short against Arkansas with a knee injury, but was able to pull in 16 receptions for 216 yards. McNeal, moved into the slotback spot, was third on the team with 25 receptions and 276 yards. McNeal was also the top returner for ULM in 2006 with 5.2 yards per punt return and 17.8 yards per kick return. He split time in kick return with Kevin Payne and Calvin Dawson. We have more experience and maturity going into this season, said McCoy. We feel really good about our progress this spring and will be ready to go this fall. Sophomore Aaron Stringfellow stepped into McCoyʼs starting spot for the last four games of 2006, coming up with seven receptions for 79 yards. He will battle for playing time, as will Josh Boudreaux, Marty Humphrey, and Darrin Taylor. Boudreaux made the move to receiver from quarterback gaining valuable experience in the offense, while Humphrey and Taylor were key role players in Also battling for some playing time will be special teams player Guy Smith. Tight Ends The tight ends may be one of the smallest position groups on the ULM squad but they play a vital role in the Warhawks multiple-scheme offense. ULM has been known to start a game with two tight ends in place and on occasion throw in a third for good measure. Juniors Mitch Doyle and Zeek Zacharie split time starting in 2006, while sophomore Justin Waller was a role player for the Warhawks. Doyle earned the initial start in 2006 after backing up all-sun Belt honoree Joey Trappey in He had four receptions for 19 yards and a touchdown in It was a lot better this spring having a year under our belts, said Doyle. We were in on a lot more plays. Zacharie earned all-sun Belt second team honors in Zacharie ranked second on the team and in the top 10 in the Sun Belt in receiving with 30 catches for 405 yards and two touchdowns. Both touchdowns came against Kansas in the second game of the season and caught the attention of the John Mackey Award committee honoring the top collegiate tight end. We are doing a lot better with more reps, said Zacharie. We can really focus on the plays and go with the flow of the offense. Waller will continue to be a key role player at tight end, while Jamal Henry and Ryan Autin also had good springs to provide depth at the position. Defense Defensive Line Familiar names line the depth chart in the defensive meeting room, as the most inexperienced area of the defense in 2006 returns as the defensive leaders in The group is young but has more on-field experience. The Warhawks return three starters on the defensive line, along with five others who have seen significant playing time. Junior Kendall Mouton and senior David Cooper hold down the middle at tackles, while sophomore Jameson Jordan handles an end position. The only piece missing is a replacement to fill the shoes of Christiaan Cambridge at the opposite end position. Jordan is the top returning tackler among defensive linemen with 25 tackles, including a tackle for loss. Back-up end Travis Eickman followed closely with 23 tackles. Eickman was tied for fourth on the team with three tackles for loss. We are one of the hardest working groups on the field, said Jordan. We want to be the ones to set the tempo and get more sacks. The ULM defense totaled 19 sacks in 2006, but wants to see that number increase in Potential candidates for Cambridgeʼs end position are sophomores Alaric Coleman and Aaron Morgan. Both saw significant playing time in Coleman was a capable reliever for Cambridge, while Morgan was a third-down stopper. Morgan led the team in sacks with four for losses of 24 yards. Joining Mouton and Cooper in the middle are part-time starters Demarcus Carmouche and Ricky Williams. Williams finished last season tied with Eickman for tackles with 23, beginning 2006 as a starter along with Carmouche. Mouton and Cooper, junior college transfers last season, moved into the starting spots midway through the season. We are the anchor for the whole defense, said Mouton. We have more experience and everyone knows their assignments this season. Others expected to contribute on the defensive line in 2007 include Patrick Sturgeon, Victor Gaines, Patrick Frazier, Aaron Moore, and Chuckie Beyer. Linebackers Gone is the senior leadership that Josh Alexander, Ryan Roussel, and Harry Bradley brought to the linebacking corps in In its place, youth with experience learned on the run. Several candidates are expected to come forward and become playmakers this season with constant competition at the position. One of the youngest in the group hoping to keep his starting role is sophomore Cardia Jackson. Jackson started every game in 2006 as a true freshman, finishing the season fourth on the team in tackles with 58, including 2.5 tackles for loss. I wish I would have known the speed of the game, said Jackson. Now I have some experience and need to get bigger, stronger, and faster. Also back from a part-time starting role is junior Jeremy Moll. Moll missed time late in the season following a concussion against Middle Tennessee after making his way into the linebacking rotation. This is a new group and everyone is learning assignments, said Moll. We have to pay attention to detail. Nothing is locked down for the fall. Weʼll have a battle every day. One surprise addition to the linebacking position is Chance Payne. Payne made the move from quarterback in the spring after backing up Kinsmon Lancaster in Others battling for a starting spot include sophomore Josh Thomas, redshirt freshman Jake Watts, and seniors Matthew Freeman ULMAthletics.com 7

8 2007 ULM Warhawks Season Preview and Ben Murphy. All four have been working their way into more time on the field. Murphy, a special teams regular over the past two seasons, was a permanent captain for 2006 and received the annual Big Hammer Award for the most big hits in a season. Defensive Secondary Okay, so three starters are gone. What will happen to the Warhawk secondary? Not a thing. ULM is not expected to lose a step with several key players back in action. We are untested but strong, said senior Quintez Secka. I think we are younger and faster with a lot of experience coming back, just as good or better, even with losing NFL talent like Kevin Payne and Chaz Williams. Secka, a starting cornerback, is a big reason why the Warhawks will remain at full strength. Secka missed a majority of the 2006 season with a hamstring injury and earned a redshirt season for In 2005, Secka recorded 36 tackles and defended six passes, including one interception. Darrius Battles is also back for his senior season at cornerback. Battles was a starter in 2005, but sat out the 2006 season to concentrate on academics. In 2005, Battles was second on the team with four interceptions to go along with 29 tackles. The spring was a learning process for all of us, said Battles. We really showed the team and coaches that we are eager to learn and ready to play against anyone who lines up across from us. While Secka and Battles take back their cornerback spots, several others are in place to provide back-up. Senior Eddie Webb, sophomore Greg James and redshirt freshman Alex Blake claimed spots on the depth chart following spring practice. James played in place of the injured Secka in 2006, finishing fifth on the team in tackles with 46 and second with five interceptions and 10 passes defended. Blake did a lot of scout team work and assisted the coaching staff by calling in defensive plays on the sideline. Webb also sat out the 2006 season to concentrate on academics. In 2005, Webb had 14 tackles while playing in all 11 games with occasional starts. The Warhawksʼ top returning tackler is safety Josh Thompson. Thompson, a junior, was an honorable mention all-sun Belt performer in 2006 with 83 tackles and six interceptions. Thompson could see time in his rover position or move to fill the free safety slot vacated by Payne. The other possibility to take over at free safety is sophomore James Truxillo. One of the hardest hitting players on the team, Truxillo filled in at several positions throughout the season, including a couple of starts in place of an injured Kevin Payne. Truxillo recorded 35 tackles, including one for a loss, and had two pass deflections. Junior transfer Bridger Durham and redshirt freshman Alex Ibe II are battling for time in the safety roles while also taking a turn on special teams. Senior James Wright has moved into the starting bandit slot vacated by Austin Willis. Wright saw significant playing time last season while backing up Willis and was a key special teams player. He recorded 26 tackles, including one for a tackle. His lone interception of the season was returned for a 33-yard touchdown against Alcorn State in the season opener. Redshirt freshman Preston Fuller is battling for time at the position. The secondary is filled with young talent who will battle for playing time Roland Ricca, Richard Walker, Derek Gipson, Jake Watts, Lavell Eleam, Jamiah Holder, Darnell Barbour, Devin Joseph, and Kerry Fisher. Special Teams Probably one of the most under-appreciated jobs on the football team is also one that leaves the biggest void when not filled. ULM has to replace four-year deep snapper Cody Bauman in Bauman was the first step in the process of making all-star punters Joel Stelly and Kevin Payne, and kicker Cole Wilson look good over the past few seasons. Stelly and Wilson earned all-sun Belt honors and Payne was the third-best punter in the league with Bauman making sure they got the ball. So the ULM coaching staff put the call out and tried out several Warhawks for the deep snapper position in the spring. Coming out of the spring, defensive lineman Cecil Pollock has shown the most potential at the position. Cecil is coming around, said Wilson. The biggest challenge for the kickers and punters will be getting our rhythm down with a new snapper. The whole unit needs to work together from snap to hold to kick. Wilson is the most visible asset on special teams headed into The senior kicker earned second team all-sun Belt honors last season after taking over the starting kicking duties after the second game of the season. Wilson recorded the highest kicking percentages in the league, hitting 14 of 15 field goals (93.3%), 21 of 23 PATs, and averaged 59.3 yards on kickoffs. Right now for the kickers, our main word is ʻfocusʼ, said Wilson. We have to continue the success we had last season. Sophomore Scott Love is slated as the Warhawks starting punter for 2007, following in the footsteps of current Chicago Bears Stelly and Payne. Love had the opportunity to punt five times late in the season, averaging 36.8 yards with a long of 45, one touchback and one inside the 20. Schedule and Sun Belt Conference race ULM will face a tough non-conference schedule in preparation for another tough season in the Sun Belt Conference. Tulsa comes to Malone Stadium to open the season on Aug. 30 on ESPN2, the first game of the season on the network. The Warhawks head out on the road to face Clemson and Texas A&M on back-toback weeks before a week off to prepare for Sun Belt competition. The ultimate goal is a Sun Belt Conference championship and the automatic bid to the R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. ULM will have to go on the road to face 2006 New Orleans Bowl champion Troy to begin the Sun Belt season on Sept. 29. The Warhawks return home to face Arkansas State on Oct. 6 and stroll down memory lane with the return of the 1987 I- AA national championship team. Two weeks later Florida International will be the ULM Homecoming opponent. In between home games, ULM will travel to North Texas on Oct. 13 and wrap up the month at Florida Atlantic. Middle Tennessee will be the final Sun Belt team to head to Malone Stadium on Nov. 3. The Warhawks will play two nonconference games, hosting Grambling and traveling to Alabama, before heading to Lafayette on Nov. 24 to face Louisiana-Lafayette in the regular season finale ULM Football
