Elko completed 17-of-32 pass for 232 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. His completion percentage would have been even higher if not for a handful of dropped passes. Elko connected with Travis Tarpley on a 19-yard touchdown pass, and hooked up with Justin Wilson on 7 and 47-yard scoring strikes. Elko trained for his starting role with a solid season as the Hornets No. 2 QB in The Delaware State signal-caller ranks fifth in the MEAC in passing yards (232), passing efficiency (145.0) and total offense (232) through the first week of play. Last season, he competed in 10 games off the bench, completing 39-of-68 passes (57.4%) for 540 yards and seven touchdowns. He also showed his versatility by serving as the Hornets punter in the last six games in 2010, ranking fifth in the MEAC with a 36.8 yard average. As a redshirt freshman, Elko made his first career start before some 106,000 fans at Michigan. Elko completed 18-of-34 passes for 151 yards in that contest. 6 JONES RISING ON DSU RUSHING CHARTS Delaware State s Jaashawn Jones (6-1/220; Asbury Park, N.J.) has passed the 1,400-yard rushing mark for his career after collecting 69 yards on 18 carries (long 20) in the Hornets win over VMI in the season opener last week. Jones has led the Hornets in rushing in each of the last two seasons. Last year, he was fourth in the MEAC in rushing yards (724) and fifth in the league in rushing yards per game (65.8). As a sophomore in 2009, Jones was fifth in the conference in rushing yards (632) and yards per game (79.0). He averaged 4.5 yards per carry in 2010, and holds a 4.2 yard-per-carry average for his career. Jones was selected to the 2011 Preseason All-MEAC First Team. He now has 1,456 career rushing yards, moving him to within 544 of becoming the ninth player in team history with at least 2,000 yards. Jaashawn Jones career rushing yards G No. Yds Avg. While Justin Wilson gets the lion s share of attention on Delaware State s receiving corps, Jackson stands out in his own right. He has been the team s most consistent receiver the last two years, collecting a team-high 79 catches during the span. Last season, he was seventh in the MEAC in receptionsper-game (3.4). He was fifth in the league with a 4.4 average (41 receptions) as a sophomore in Jackson enters his senior season with 97 catches for 1,181 yards at DSU. We will name captains for each contest, based on game and practice performance, attitude, classroom and off-the-field activities, said firstyear head coach Kermit Blount. This has been my philosophy since I became a head coach. MANY DEFENSIVE STARS IN OPENING DAY WIN It was hard to identify just one standout defensive player in the Hornets opening day win at VMI last week. Cornerback Joe Boyd (so.; 6-0/195) led the team with nine tackles (3 solo), while defensive back Tavis Tabb (r-sr. 6-2/195) and linebackers Ernest Adjei (jr.; 6-0/230) and Quentin Ferguson (r-sr.; 5-11; 210) had seven each. Tabb also recorded a forced fumble. Four other players collected six tackles each, including linebacker Brandon Harvey (sr,; 6-1/240), who also recorded a forced fumble and an interception. Defensive lineman Darrell Brown (sr.; 6-2/300) also had six tackles and a sack. In addition, defensive back Matt Spicer (r-so.; 5-11/195) had six tackles and an interception. TARPLEY SURVIVES SHAKY START TO SHINE IN OPENER Delaware State wide receiver/kick returner Travis Tarpley (r-jr.; 5-7/175) less than memorable start to the 2011 season. Tarpley fumbled the opening kickoff in last week s opener, resulting in a VMI touchdown just 52 seconds into the season. A short time later, Tarpley was helped off the field after a jarring hit on a pass play. The Danville, Va., native shook off the early misfortune to play a key role in the Hornets opening day win. Tarpley scored DSU s first points of the season on a 19-yard pass from Nick Elko to cut VMI s lead to 7-6 with in the first quarter. He finished the day with five receptions for 76 yards, including a 37-yarder and a spectacular first down grab during a key fourth quarter drive. In addition, Tarpley returned four kickoffs for 92 yards and had two rushes for six yards in the contest. After one week of play, he tops all MEAC players with 174 all-purpose yards. KANO GETS A KICK OUT OF DSU WIN Hornet punter Marko Kano (so; 6-4/215) played a key role in the opening day win. The Cottbus, Germany native averaged 45.8 yards on eight kicks vs. VMI last week, tops among all MEAC punters on the opening weekend. Kano had a long kick of 65 yards. He also landed two kicks inside the VMI 20-yard line.

The Hornets committed just five penalties for 31 yards in last week s season opening win at VMI. Last season, Delaware State was No. 1 in the MEAC for fewest penalties. The Hornets were flagged a total of 73 times (6.6 pg) for 551 times, averaging a leaguelow 50.1 penalty yards per game. Was penalized just four times for 20 yards in its opener last week. OFFENSIVE LINE HOLDS OFF RUSH Delaware State quarterback Nick Elko can thank his offensive line for staying upright in last week s win at VMI. The Hornets did not allow a sack in the contest. Elko dropped back to pass 32 times in the contest, completing 17. The offensive line did not commit a false start, but was accessed one holding penalty in the contest. HORNETS NOT SO BRIGHT UNDER LIGHTS Since installing lights and an artificial surface at Alumni Stadium in 2006, Delaware State is 15-9 at home, including 5-5 at night. The Hornets were 2-3 at Alumni Stadium last season, including 0-2 under the lights. IN THE RED The Delaware State offense was a misleading 3-for-4 in the red zone in the opener last week. The Hornets scored two touchdowns and kicked a field goal when beginning a series of plays inside the VMI 20-yard line last week. The only time DSU did not score inside the red zone was when it received the ball at the VMI 20 on the final possession of the game. The Hornets ran three plays before taking a knee on the final two. The Delaware State defense allowed three touchdowns in four red zone chances by VMI last week. The Keydets missed a field goal on its only red zone failure. FOUR HORNETS ON HBCU BOWL WATCH LIST Four Delaware State seniors are included on the Watch List for the 2011 HBCU Bowl All-Star Game. Jaashawn Jones (RB), Brandon Harvey (LB), Darius Jackson (WR) and Keith Newell (OL) are listed among the players under consideration for the Dec. 18, 2011 contest at the GeorgiaDome in Atlanta, Ga. 10 DELAWARE STATE HEAD COACH KERMIT BLOUNT Delaware State University President Harry L. Williams announced Kermit Blount as the new head coach of the Hornets on Feb. 4, Blount brings 27 years of collegiate coaching experience to Delaware State University - including 16 as the head football coach for Winston- Salem State University in North Carolina. It didn t take long for Blount to earn the respect of the Hornet players and the Delaware State University family. He quickly became an ambassador for the university and the football program throughout the region, in addition to establishing new academic, training, practice and accountability policies for the team. Along the way, he found time to attract a top-notch staff of assistant coaches and support personnel to DSU. Despite just a few weeks to prepare, Blount also directed the Hornets to a successful 2011 spring camp, during which time, new offensive and defensive formations were installed. DSU President Williams said Coach Blount's record speaks for itself. Blount is the winningest coach in the history of the Winston- Salem State football program. In fact, he reached the top of the list with a come-from-behind win against Delaware State in Dover, Del., in He has also led the Rams to 25 percent of their conference championships, directing WSSU to two of its eight conference titles as a head coach and to two more conference titles as a quarterback on the team s 1977 and 1978 squads. Blount was honored as the CIAA Coach of the Year and as the Washington D.C. Pigskin Coach of the Year, as well as the 100% Wrong Club Coach of the Year - each award in both 1999 and Throughout his coaching career, Blount has been associated with programs that have experienced phenomenal success. In all, he has been in a leadership role with teams that have won a total of six conference titles at both the NCAA Division I and Division II levels. Blount began his coaching career in his home state of Virginia at Armstrong Kennedy High School in Richmond as a quarterbacks coach and assistant offensive coordinator. Following two seasons at the high school level Blount moved on to the collegiate ranks in "Coach Blount has proven he knows how to guide studentathletes to championship-level seasons as well as accomplish high standards of academic success," Dr. Williams said. "The Search Committee is to be commended for its diligence in reviewing the candidates, in engaging in earnest deliberations and arriving at its recommendation." Delaware State University Director of athletics Derek Carter says Blount brings a wealth of experience to the Hornet football program. "Kermit Blount stood out among the many outstanding candidates for the position because of his broad experience, proven leadership and vision for Delaware State University football," Carter said. "His record of leading young men to success on the field and in the classroom makes him an ideal fit for the university and the football program." Blount expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to lead the Delaware State University football program during his remarks. "First of all, I want to thank President Williams and the DSU administration, along with the search committee, for the privilege of coaching the Hornets," Blount. "This program has a rich tradition, and the foundation for success is already in place. I'm looking forward to working with the university, our players, supporters and the community to take this team to the next level." During his tenure at Winston-Salem, Coach Blount had a career record , which included his final 2009 season with the Rams in which he led the team to an 8-2 record. He guided the Rams to two Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championships and a total of three CIAA Championship game appearances. He also led Winston-Salem to two Pioneer Bowl appearances, one of which the team emerged as the victor (1999). In 1983 he became a graduate assistant and assistant quarterbacks coach at East Carolina University where he would begin his collegiate coaching career. Following his stint with the Pirates, Blount joined the staff at Howard University, where he assumed the responsibilities of offensive coordinator from under Bison head coach Willie Jeffries. Soon after his arrival in the nation's capital, Blount's presence was felt as he directed a potent Bison offense to the 1987 Mid- Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship. Following his time at Howard, he spent four more years as part of Jeffries' staff at South Carolina State University (MEAC) in Orangeburg, South Carolina before returning to his alma mater, Winston- Salem State University, as the head football coach in During his coaching career, Blount and his coaching staffs have been responsible for recruiting and coaching student-athletes that have earned a total of 106 all-conference selections. In addition, Blount has guided a pair of conference player-of-the-year recipients, one All-America selection and a two-time Academic All-America honoree.

11 DELAWARE STATE HEAD COACH KERMIT BLOUNT, cont. His priority on academics resulted in more than 20 percent of Winston-Salem State University football scholarship student-athletes earning above a 3.0 GPA during the academic year and 22 football players have been named to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Commissioner's All-Academic team over the span of the last two seasons. During Blount s tenure, the Rams' football team GPA was the highest since the data has been tracked by the WSSU Office of Athletic- Academic Support and Blount and his coaching staff have graduated 79 percent of football student-athletes over the most recent five-year reporting period. Blount helped increase the Winston-Salem players' graduation rate from 42% in 1993 to 80% by Throughout Blount s career, a number of his players have risen to play professionally in the NFL, CFL and the Arena Football League, including William Hayes, a third round draft pick and starting defensive end for the NFL s Tennessee Titans. Not only has Blount helped to shape the futures of former studentathletes at WSSU, he has also helped to guide the careers of countless assistant coaches and coordinators. Blount has helped four of his former assistant coaches move on to successful head coaching careers at the collegiate level. A 1980 graduate of Winston-Salem State University, Blount enjoyed a fruitful playing career as a Ram. As a four-year starter at quarterback at WSSU, Blount guided the Rams to back-to-back CIAA titles in 1977 and 1978 earning all-conference and All-America honors along the way. The 1978 All-American sat atop the WSSU record books for more than 25 years before his 3,330 career passing yards were surpassed in A native of Richmond, Va., Blount has a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education from Winston-Salem State University. Kermit and wife Ava have two grown children, April and Bryan.
