NEW ORLEANS PRIVATEERS ( SLC) at HOUSTON COUGARS ( American) 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017 H&PE Arena (8,050) Houston FloHoops KPRC 950 AM COUGARS CONTINUE HOMESTAND vs. NEW ORLEANS on WEDNESDAY Cougars continue their season-long homestand when they play host to New Orleans at 7 p.m., Wednesday, inside H&PE Arena. Houston started homestand with impressive win over UIW on Saturday night in first meeting between the two teams. Six Cougars scored in double digits, led by guards Rob Gray s and Wes Van- Beck s 16 points apiece... Forward Devin Davis and Fabian White Jr. each finished with double-doubles. A year after leading the Cougars and the American Athletic Conference, senior guard Rob Gray ranks 12th nationally with 23.8 points per game. HEADLINES and STORYLINES Construction continues on former Hofheinz Pavilion as it undergoes a $60 million renovation to become the Fertitta Center for the season... Houston is competing inside H&PE Arena on the campus of nearby Texas Southern for most of the season. With Cougars win over Wake Forest on Nov. 19, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson celebrated the 100th game of his Houston career... Has posted a record at Houston, the third-best mark after 100 games... Trails only Alden Pasche (61-39) and Tom Penders (60-40). Houston has outrebounded its first five opponents to open the season... First time that has been accomplished since first five games of season... Lewis Development Facility. Diagnosed with epilepsy, apraxia of speech and autism, Nicholas faces challenges in communication verbally but remains a happy, young man, who enjoys playing any sports with a ball with his siblings. Following his press conference, Nicholas played basketball with some of his new Cougar teammates and enjoyed taking photos with spirit group members. Cougars are working with Nicholas and his family through Team IMPACT, a non-profit organization, which looks to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses through the power of team. ABOUT NEW ORLEANS New Orleans brings a 1-4 record into Wednesday s game after falling at South Alabama on Sunday evening. Privateers dropped their first three games of the season before taking a win over Spring Hill in New Orleans on Nov. 24. Against South Alabama, forward Travin Thibodeaux posted 14 points with three rebounds to lead the Privateers Freshman guard Troy Green came off the bench to post 11 points with six rebounds, while sophomore guard Bryson Robinson added 10 points with a pair of assists... LAST TIME vs. NEW ORLEANS Houston 78, New Orleans 65 Dec. 16, 2004 Hofheinz Pavilion Houston Guard Lanny Smith led all players with 30 points as the Cougars claimed a win over New Orleans inside Hofheinz Pavilion on Dec. 16, Smith enjoyed the first 30-point game of his career with 8-of-13 shooting from the field including 5-of-6 from behind the arc and 9-of-10 shooting from the free throw line. Cougars led wire to wire and built as much as a 19-point lead early in the second half. Houston connected on 11-of-26 from the 3-point line while holding Privateers to only 1-of-10 from behind the arc. Guard Andre Owens finished with 19 points and five 3-pointers and added a team-high seven rebounds in the win... Guard Brian Latham dished out a team-high five assists, while forward Ramon Dyer did a little of everything with nine points, six rebounds, three blocks and two steals. New Orleans guard Bo McCalebb led the Privateers with 26 points on 11-of-21 shooting, while guard Chad Barnes posted 10 points with a game-high eight rebounds... Guard Jamie McNeilly added a game-high seven assists in the loss. LAST TIME OUT Houston 97, UIW 58 Nov. 25, 2017 H&PE Arena Houston With double-doubles from senior Devin Davis and freshman Fabian White Jr., Cougars cruised to a win over UIW on Saturday inside H&PE Arena. 39-point win marked the sixth win of at least 30 points during the last three seasons and the fifth-largest winning margin in the Kelvin Sampson era. White scored 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field and led all players with 12 rebounds for the first double-double of his career... Davis totaled 10 points with 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double in and the third of his career. Two were part of six Cougars to score in double digits led by seniors Rob Gray and Wes VanBeck who each accounted for 16 points. Davis chipped in 14 points to go along with 10 rebounds while White had 14 points and 12 boards. Junior Corey Davis Jr. chipped in 14 points with a game-high seven assists, while sophomore Armoni Brooks added 10 to round out Houston s double-digit scorers. It was the first time the Cougars had six double-digit scorers since TaShawn Thomas (22), Jherrod Stiggers (17), Joseph Young (14), Danuel House (12), Brandon Morris (10) and Leon Gibson (10) accomplished the feat in a win against Louisiana College on Nov. 19, Cougars connected on 52.9 percent (36-of-68) of their shots from the field and limited the Cardinals to only 32.3 percent (20-of-62), including 22.2 percent (8-of-36) in the second half. Houston also forced 22 UIW giveaways, leading to 33 points, and outrebounded the Cardinals Game was close early with the Cougars holding a after Simi Socks drained a jumper with 9:43 left in the first half. ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Freshman forward Fabian White Jr. was named the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week on Nov. 27, the first weekly honor of his career. Atascocita, Texas, native posted a career-high 14 points with a game-high 12 rebounds for the first double-double of his career. Became the 14th Houston freshman to record a double-double during his career and the first since Danuel House during the season. FRESHMAN DOUBLE-DOUBLES With 14 points and 12 rebounds in the Cougars big win over UIW on Nov. 25, freshman forward Fabian White Jr. became the 14th freshman in school history to record a double-double. A CALL ANSWERED On Aug. 28, 2017, as Hurricane Harvey ravaged the Texas Gulf Coast and the greater Houston area, Houston Head Coach Kelvin Sampson sent out a tweet asking for basketball coaches at all levels to donate 20 t-shirts and 10 pairs of shoes and send to his attention at the Guy V. Lewis Development Facility on the University of Houston campus to distribute to relief efforts. Basketball coaches responded... as the did the entire nation. Eventually, more than 2.7 million people saw his tweet Sampson and the Men s Basketball program received nearly 1,500 donation commitments to his Twitter account from 49 states and Canada as well as many more donations from people who did not use social media. Sampson and his team received thousands of boxes duringthe next several weeks and distributed to local missions and charity groups to assist in hurricane relief efforts. By the end of the drive, Houston Men s Basketball estimated that it received more than 20,000 pairs of shoes and more than 200,000 t-shirts for those in need. The renovation was made possible through a generous $20 million donation from University of System Board of Regents Chairman Tilman J. Fertitta and his family in late August The facility will feature a premium club area and a courtside club. The reconfigured bowl will move mid-court seating locations closer to game action with floor-level seating opposite the team benches for UH students. Renovations include a new audio system, sports lighting and video boards as well as new concession stands and expanded restrooms. The facility s exterior also will be refreshed. Prominent to the center s exterior, the renovation will preserve the legacy of the Hofheinz family and its contributions to both UH and the city of Houston. UH will transform an area adjacent to the new facility into Hofheinz Plaza, where fans will be greeted by a bronze statue of former Harris County Judge Roy Hofheinz. The University of Houston will request that city officials rename a portion of Holman Street in front of the arena after the Hofheinz family. In addition, Roy Hofheinz s records will be permanently archived and publicly accessible as a special collection in the UH library and the Alumni Center will house an area describing the lives and public service of Roy and Irene Hofheinz. This gift is personal. It represents a commitment from my family and me to support the University of Houston in its quest to strengthen our nationally competitive institution both in academics and athletics, Fertitta said. Lewis Development Facility is.
