6 HOUSTON MEN S BASKETBALL GUY V. LEWIS DEVELOPMENT FACILITY In April 2016, both the University of Houston Men s and Women s Basketball programs celebrated their bright futures when the Guy V. Lewis Development Center was officially dedicated. Designed by DLR Group and Page, the Guy V. Lewis Basketball Center is located adjacent to Hofheinz Pavilion at the corner of Cullen Boulevard and Holman Street on the UH campus. Construction on the $25 million facility began in late September and was completed in Fall Austin Commercial served as the construction manager. The 53,000 square-foot facility provides the environment that the Houston Men s and Women s Basketball student-athletes need to excel throughout the season in all areas. The first level houses a dedicated practice court for each team as well as shared sports performance and sports medicine areas, which are shared by both programs. QUICK FACTS Name: Guy V. Lewis ( ) Levels: 3 Dedicated practice court for each program as well as sports performance and sports medicine areas to be used by both programs on first level Team areas, including locker rooms and academic/film rooms on second level Office space for Men s and Women s Basketball coaching/support staffs on third level Architects: DLR Group and Page Construction Manager: Austin Commercial The second level feature the teams areas, which include locker rooms and academic/film theaters. The team rooms contain spacious, modern lockers, multiple video screens for television and comfortable furniture. The third level hold office space for both Men s and Women s Basketball coaching and support staffs. I am proud and grateful that our administration recognizes how important this is. UH Chancellor/President Dr. (Renu) Khator and Mack Rhoades have made a commitment to make our program better. When you are playing in a conference with the defending national champion and other tradition-rich programs, we need to have competitive advantages like this facility will provide, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson said. Teams become better from October to March. For players to get better, it has to be from March to October. We will have a place where our players can practice, work out, shoot, develop chemistry and improve their work ethics. They can do this, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with this facility. 4

7 MEDIA ALMANAC FERTITTA CENTER The University of Houston Men s and Women s Basketball programs will compete in a new game arena during the season when the Fertitta Center officially opens. With the completion of the season, Hofheinz Pavilion the Cougars current home arena will undergo a $60 million renovation. The renovation was made possible through a generous $20 million donation from University of System Board of Regents Chairman Tilman J. Fertitta and his family in late August The facility will feature a premium club area and a courtside club. The reconfigured bowl will move mid-court seating locations closer to game action with floor-level seating opposite General Contractor: Architects: the team benches for UH students. Renovations include a new audio system, sports lighting and video boards as well as new concession stands and expanded restrooms. The facility s exterior also will be refreshed. Prominent to the center s exterior, the renovation will preserve the legacy of the Hofheinz family and its contributions to both UH and the city of Houston. The University of Houston will request that city officials rename a portion of Holman Street in front of the arena after the Hofheinz family. In addition, Roy Hofheinz s records will be permanently archived and publicly accessible as a special collection in the UH library and the Alumni Center will house an area describing the lives and public service of Roy and Irene Hofheinz. This gift is personal. It represents a commitment from my family and me to support the University of Houston in its quest to strengthen our nationally competitive institution both in academics and athletics, Fertitta said. Upgrading our athletics facilities shows we are serious about competing at the highest levels of collegiate sports for many years to come. I m proud of where the University of Houston is today and I m proud to make this investment in my university s future. 5

An online entity may receive a credential only if its own full-time staff writes a majority of that site s material. 2. Online entities that focus primarily on University of Houston Athletics and sponsor message boards or chat rooms, may receive credentials provided they adhere to a policy that requires that a posted message or opinion is identified with the actual name and city of the individual posting the message. 3. Any online service that is recognized as an outlet intended primarily for the purpose of delivering news related to the recruitment of student-athletes will not qualify for credentials. 4. INTERVIEWS All interviews with Houston coaches, student-athletes and administrators MUST be coordinated through the Athletics Communications Office. Arrangements to speak with a member of the men s basketball program should be made with Assistant AD for Communications Jeff Conrad ( /jaconrad@central.uh.edu) at least one day prior to the desired interview date. Student-athletes and coaches are generally available before and after practice. The locker rooms, training room and weight room inside Houston Men s Basketball home venues are off-limits to reporters. On game days, no Houston student-athletes will be available until the postgame media session. GAME DAY Pregame packets, including notes and statistics, will be available in a designated media area at Houston Men s Basketball home venues. Timeout, halftime and final statistics plus running play-by-play and postgame notes and quotes will be provided. A light meal will be provided during pregame. Postgame interviews for Head Coach Kelvin Sampson and selected student-athletes will be held in a designated press conference area following each home game. After a brief, cooling-off period, Sampson and selected studentathletes will be brought to the media room to answer questions. PRESS SEATING AND PARKING Press row seats are for working newspaper writers, radio and television reporters, along with Houston Athletics staff, and are allocated by the Houston Athletics Communications Office, which reserves the right to deny credentials to any outlet. Admission to press row is by pass only. Media parking will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis in a designated lot. He served as the radio play-by-play broadcaster for Houston Women s Basketball for 10 years and and called Houston Baseball games for nine years before joining Men s Basketball. In addition, he calls the play-by-play action for Major League Soccer s Houston Dynamo and serves as the sideline reporter during Houston Football games and hosts Football Head Coach Major Applewhite s weekly radio show. He will add Men s Basketball Head Coach Kelvin Sampson s weekly radio program to that list in Branham, who is a Humble, Texas, native, has extensive broadcast experience, first working as a fill-in broadcaster for the Houston ISP Sports Network during the Women s Basketball season. He received his bachelor s degree from the University of Houston in For the eighth straight season, Houston and NBA legend Elvin Hayes will serve as the radio analyst on the men s basketball broadcasts. As a Cougar from 1965 to 1968, Hayes established himself as one of the finest players in college basketball history. The Rayville, La., native led the Cougars to a combined record and back-to-back NCAA Final Four appearances in 1967 and During his final collegiate season in , he was a consensus National Player of the Year selection after averaging 36.8 points and 18.9 rebounds per game. He remains the program s leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 31.0 points and 17.2 rebounds per game during his career. Following his Houston days, he was taken with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1968 NBA Draft by the San Diego Rockets. In 16 seasons in the NBA, Hayes averaged 21.0 points and 12.2 rebounds per game. He was named to the All-NBA First or Second Teams six times and was a 12-time NBA All-Star. In 1996, he was named one of the NBA s 50 Greatest Players. Hayes was inducted into the Houston Athletics Hall of Honor in 1974 and joined the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in
