4 2008 Season Preview Smoke On The Water After a breakout season in 2007, the Tennessee Lady Vol rowing team is prepared to set the race courses ablaze in 2008, leaving Smoke on the Water and opponents in its wake. In her 10th season at the helm, Head Coach Lisa Glenn has consistently lit the flame beneath the Orange and White, propelling them from an unranked program when she took over into the top 10 in the nation last season. This year, Glenn has put together the key elements strong veterans and top newcomers with international experience required to start the fire once again. Though the Lady Vols saw six seniors graduate from the team that finished the season ranked 10th in the nation, a key core of upperclassmen and some exciting newcomers are set to continue and expand on the squad s previous success. With the accomplishments of last season come great expectations in 2008, including a return to the top of the South Region and a third consecutive full-team invitation to NCAA Championships. Basically, the main objective for us is to continue becoming stronger and stronger, Head Coach Lisa Glenn said. Our goals are always relative to where we want to go and where we ve been. We d like to take another step forward as far as presence and competitive level are concerned, so we want to finish stronger than we have in the past. With a group of eight seniors in 2008, including six four-year varsity letterwinners, the Lady Vols have leadership covered both on and off the water. The senior class of Jessica Ayers, Renee Brittle, Genevieve Collins, Nina Dobratz, Krista Gearing, Mary Jones, Marisa Mohan and Kendra Warren has helped to bring Tennessee rowing to a higher level, guiding the team from making single-shell appearances at NCAA Championships to back-to-back full team berths over the past two seasons. With that experience, the seniors have set the tone for the newcomers this season, building a culture of winning and success that they will look to continue this spring. We have an amazing amount of experience in the senior class, Glenn said. They have seen the program through a major growth stage. I think that s a part of why they are still with us and still together because they were a part of that transition from, not just developing top speed, but involving everyone. UT s ninth-place team finish at the 2007 NCAA Championships was the best in program history, and the Lady Vols welcome back 15 athletes who competed at the event. The Orange and White return six rowers who were a part of the Varsity Eight shell that finished third in Kendra Warren and Genevieve Collins are among a group of eight seniors set to lead the 2008 squad. The two helped UT record its best finish in program history in the 2V8+ at national championships in Two-time All-American Erin-Monique Shelton has been a mainstay in the Varsity Eight over the last two years and will lead UT s top crew this spring. the petite final at national championships in Brittle, Ayers, Dobratz, Gearing and Jones, and junior Erin-Monique Shelton. The group boasts several accolades, including Shelton s two Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) All-America honors and Brittle s and Gearing s CRCA All-South Region recognition in Those six, however, will face tremendous pressure to maintain their seats in the shell, as fellow veterans Warren, junior Kate Brownlee and sophomore Mary Beth Dreusike, as well as freshman international Libuŝe Bruncvíkova, are all making a push to earn spots in the boat. Warren, Brownlee and Dreusike helped guide the Second Eights to the team s best finish at nationals in 2007, taking second in the petite final, while Bruncvíkova joins the team from the Czech Republic where she represented her country six times in the Junior and Under-23 World Championships. The competition to secure a spot in the Lady Vols top shell will likely push each rower to her full potential and result in one of the best V8+ boats Tennessee has fielded. Thankfully, we have several athletes who are in contention for a spot in the Varsity Eight, Glenn said. We ve got some good competition between the power rowers and the rowers with a little bit higher skill level, the technicians. So, hopefully, we can get a good combination of power and skill in one boat. Right now the door is open. We could see several different lineups. This year s Second Eights could see a surge of new, young faces vying for a spot in the shell. Along with Dreusike, Brownlee, Warren and Collins, juniors Caroline Howell and Alex Shishkov, and sophomore Kate Snider return from last year s various 2V8+ lineups. Those who don t find themselves with a spot in the Varsity Eight will likely be competing with several motivated newcomers. Sophomores Stephanie Hunley, Laura Miller and Jewell Ludwigsen have made the jump from the novice squad to varsity, while freshmen Rachel Dooley, Ruth Ann Johnson, Melissa Toms and RuthAnne Waldrop are looking to make an impact in their first season on the team. I think that a couple of our freshmen have done a really good job of going from trailing the pack to getting themselves into the mix a little bit more, Glenn said. Just one rower remains from last season s Varsity Four that fin-

5 2008 Season Preview ished third in the petite final at NCAA Championships Mohan. The rest of the seats in the V4+ are up for grabs and could be filled by any of the veterans or newcomers on the squad. Though both of Tennessee s coxswains are just sophomores, the tandem of Katie Ross and Sydney Newman brings experience and knowledge to the stern of the boats. Ross is in her second season on the varsity squad after guiding the Second Eight to three regular season wins, a third-place showing in the grand final at Central/South Regionals and a second-place finish in the petite final at NCAA Championships in Meanwhile, Newman started last season as the novice Second Eights caller before finishing 2007 as the top novice coxswain, leading her N8+ crew to a first-place finish in the petite final at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships. Ross will carry her experience into the spring season as the coxswain for the Varsity Eight, while Newman will start out as the caller for the 2V8+ after just one season of rowing experience. The coxswains are young, which bodes well for the future, Glenn said. For right now, Katie Ross is a little more comfortable with all the elements that a coxswain has to juggle. Sydney has shown a lot of strengths and one of the things she s best at is steering. She really has a feel for getting from point A to point B in the shortest amount of time. A coxswain has to have that element. The 2008 spring slate will, as always, be a challenging one, pitting the Orange and White against some of the best crews in the nation. This spring UT will face off against teams from each of the five NCAA regions, hoping to get a glimpse of what s to come if it can earn a third straight full-squad bid for the NCAA Championships. We don t have any race date that can be overlooked in any way, Glenn said. The fact is, we are going to be facing really formidable opponents on every race date that we have. I think our team will be best to really respect what s in front of us and gear up for every opportunity that we have because we re going to need it. Hopefully, we ll be that team as well, that teams will have to gear up for because we always bring a good race. You really can t get much stronger than this schedule. For the eighth consecutive time, Tennessee will begin the spring season on its home waters at Lake Loudoun. The Lady Vols open the campaign on March 22, hosting Minnesota and one week later close After leading the Second Eights to a second-place showing in the petite final at NCAA Championships, sophomore coxswain Katie Ross is set to take over as the caller for the Lady Vols top shell. One of nine newcomers on the varsity squad, freshman Libuše Bruncvíkova helped solidify a spot in the Varsity 8+ with a strong showing in the fall. out the home schedule with South region rival Louisville. The two teams will meet in head-to-head action for the sixth time in program history, with UT looking for its fourth straight victory over the Cardinals. With two races under their belts, the Lady Vols hit the road on April 12, traveling to Columbus, Ohio, to face Ohio State, Michigan and Southern California on the Scioto River. The meet will give the Orange and White its only opportunity during the regular season to see a West region squad. The race will also allow UT to test itself against a Buckeye team that finished third overall and second in the Varsity Eight at NCAA Championships in The Big Orange novices will get a chance to show their stuff at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships on April 19 at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. In 2007, the Lady Vols took first in the Novice 8+ petite final at the event to finish seventh overall. Meanwhile, that same day, the varsity squad will close out the regular season against two of the nation s top squads in Princeton and Yale in Princeton, N.J. Last year, the Bulldogs finished fourth overall at NCAA Championships and captured the Varsity 8+ crown, while the Tigers edged UT for eighth-place in the team standings. After a nearly month-long break, Tennessee will return to action May 17-18, playing host to the NCAA Central and South Region Championships in Oak Ridge. After finishing third overall and second in the South region last year, the Lady Vols will be looking to return to the South Region Championship glory they experienced in 2006, when they knocked off defending champion Virginia to capture their first regional title in program history. With the regional championships wrapped up, the Orange and White will hope to earn their third consecutive full-squad invitation to NCAA National Championships, held May 30-Jun. 1 at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. I think the team is really excited to just get the season underway, Glenn said. It s going to go really fast, and we re going to have to be prepared for that. As long as the wait has seemed, it s here now. Following its best finish in program history at national championships in 2007, Tennessee will hope to continue its rise into the upper echelon of collegiate rowing in A combination of strong leaders, experience and the right results could allow the 2008 squad to leave its mark as one of the best to call the waters of Lake Loudoun home. Head Coach Lisa Glenn and the Lady Vols will look to blaze a path this season, leaving Smoke on the Water and top competition in their wake. 5

Following the hot start, Tennessee headed to Boston for the world s largest regatta the Head of the Charles. On Saturday, Oct. 20, the Club 8+ entry of sophomore coxswain Sidney Newman, freshmen Rachel Dooley, RuthAnne Waldrop and Melissa Toms, sophomores Laura Miller and Stephanie Hunley, junior Alex Shishkov and senior Marisa Mohan, continued the Lady Vols domination of the event. The next day, the Orange and White continued its success, posting a fifth-place finish in the Champ 8+ event, the best showing in program history. The C8+ boat finished just five seconds out of third place and was the third-best collegiate shell. The same weekend, the Lady Vol novices saw their first action, finishing second, fourth, fifth and ninth at the Head of the Tennessee in Knoxville. The Big Orange continued to rake in the medals at the Head of the Chattahoochee on Nov. 3, with the varsity taking home a top-three finish in each of the four events it entered. Tennessee took gold in the Champ 8+ and Championship 2x, with junior Erin-Monique Shelton and freshman Libuše Bruncvíkova winning the double. UT also posted a second-place finish in the C4+ and a 2-3 finish in the Open 4x. The Lady Vols closed out the fall season at the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville, Va., on Nov. 11. Though it could not edge host Virginia s top shells, UT earned a silver in the C8+, C2x and C1x races. Meanwhile, the Big Orange novice shells posted another solid performance to wrap up the fall, taking fourth and seventh in a field of 12 boats.
