The Rams did just that, and on January 30, 2000, beat the Tennessee Titans to win their third NFL title. The game was a classic battle as neither team committed a turnover. The Rams made three first-half field goals enroute to a 9-0 halftime lead. The Rams increased their lead to 16-0 in the third quarter as WR Torry Holt caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from MVP Kurt Warner. From there, the Titans began a furious rally, scoring the next 16 points to tie the game with 2:12 remaining in the game. The Rams took the lead for good on the next play from scrimmage as Warner fired a 73-yard touchdown pass to WR Isaac Bruce for the final margin. The game was not decided until the final play, when Rams LB Mike Jones tackled Titans WR Kevin Dyson at the one-yard line to preserve the victory. Hodges punting, combined with the Rams coverage teams, allowed Hodges to have a net average of 40.1 yards, with just 19 yards allowed on three punt returns. Hodges forced four fair catches, including his final punt downed inside the 20, forcing the Cardinals to drive 86 yards for a potential game-winning touchdown with less than two minutes to play. Hodges is averaging 39.3 yards on 11 attempts this season, with two punts being downed inside the 20. SPECIAL COVERAGE After a slow start to the 2005 season, the Rams coverage teams responded in a major way last week at Arizona. St. Louis opened the scoring on the game s opening drive, marching 80 yards in seven plays. Bulger passed 19 yards to WR Torry Holt to stake the Rams to a 7-0 lead just over three minutes into the game. After a pair of Arizona field goals cut the Rams lead to 7-6 in the second quarter, The Rams extended its margin with less than four minutes to play until halftime. A 10-play, 69-yard drive ended with K Jeff Wilkins making a 29-yard field goal and St. Louis gaining a 10-6 lead they would take to halftime. Arizona narrowed the margin to 10-9 on its first possession of the third quarter, but the Rams immediately responded. Bulger led the Rams on an eight-play, 76-yard drive capped off by Jackson s seven-yard TD run to extend the lead to Arizona cut the lead to on a field goal midway through the fourth quarter, but could get no closer. On Arizona s final possession, S Adam Archuleta sacked Warner on the Rams 10-yard line and a false start penalty against the Cardinals ended the game. MARTZ ON THE MIC Monday, September 19 (Opening statement) A couple things about the game: our special teams play, I thought improved remarkably. The special teams player of the game is Reggie Hodges, and Reggie s numbers, seven punts for 42.9 average, a 40 yard net. He had one inside the 20 yard line and a longest one of 55 [yards]. Very consistent. (More on win over Cardinals) It s starting to come together a little bit. We re not where we need to be, obviously, but we re very pleased with the effort I got down there in the heat. Our guys performed very well. It was a tough afternoon. It was a hard fought win. We re excited about it, very proud of the fact that these guys played hard throughout the game. (On where the defensive front is compared to last year) There s no comparison, our defensive front is light years ahead of where it was a year ago. I think the combination of [Brandon] Green and [Anthony] Hargrove on that end has really helped us replace Grant [Wistrom], in that respect. It keeps us fresh. Leonard [Little], right now, is playing better than he s ever played. I think the feeling there too is that our linebacker core is so squared away. It allows them to make a lot more plays, and I think that s very important when you look at our front seven. GAME BALLS For the Rams win over the Cardinals, defensive coordinator Larry Marmie and S Adam Archuleta earned game balls. Marmie spent eight seasons coaching with the Cardinals and seven seasons at Arizona State, his last four as head coach. Archuleta was an all-american at ASU and is a native of the Phoenix area. Their ties to the area, as well as their helping the defense not allow a touchdown, helped earn them the honor. During Martz s Monday press conference, he also announced the team s players of the week - P Reggie Hodges (special teams), RB Steven Jackson (offense), and DT Ryan Pickett (defense). MONEY K Jeff Wilkins made both PAT s and his only field goal attempt last week the Rams win at Arizona. The 12-year veteran from Youngstown State is off to a fast start in 2005, as he opened the season against San Francisco by making all four field goal attempts (30, 41, 33, 41) and his only PAT attempt. Wilkins is second in the NFC and sixth in the NFL in scoring among kickers with 18 points. Wilkins, the Rams alltime leader in scoring with 896 points, is sixth among active players in scoring with 1,089 points, and seventh among active players in field goal accuracy at 81.8 percent. 6 ON THE MARC QB Marc Bulger completed 18 of his 29 pass attempts for 216 yards with one touchdown and one interception last week at Arizona, leading the Rams to their first win of the season. Bulger s career record as a starter is now (.711 winning percentage). Going into the game against the Cardinals, Bulger needed 3 passing yards to get to the 10,000-yard mark. It took him only two attempts to get that first completion, hitting WR Kevin Curtis for a 23-yard gain with 12:33 left in the first quarter. That pass play led to a touchdown pass from Bulger to WR Torry Holt on the next play, good for 19 yards, to give the Rams the first lead of the game, 7-0. In getting to the 10,000-yard mark, Bulger tied Hall of Famer Dan Marino for the second-fastest quarterback to reach that mark. Bulger, it should be noted, attended the same high school as Marino, as both grew up in Pittsburgh and attended Central Catholic High. The touchdown was also the 60th scoring pass of Bulger s career, making him the seventh quarterback in Rams history to have at least 60 touchdown passes. In the Rams season opener at San Francisco on Sept. 11, Bulger threw a team-record 56 passes, completing 34, which is tied for third-most in franchise history. His 34 completions gained 362 yards for two touchdowns with one interception. The 362-yard passing day was the sixthbest of Bulger s career. His first touchdown was a 29-yard pass to WR Isaac Bruce, and his second was a 6-yard strike to TE Brandon Manumaleuna, both of which came in the fourth quarter. Bulger s 362-yard passing game is the highest in the NFL this season, and also marked his 12th career 300- yard passing game. Through the first two games of 2005, Bulger is third in the NFC in attempts (85, tied for third NFL), completions (52, fourth NFL), yards (578, fifth NFL), tied for fourth in touchdowns (three, tied for eighth NFL), fifth in passer rating (83.4, 13th NFL), and tied for fifth in third-down passing (92.7 rating, tied for seventh NFL). That total also places him at the top of the list of active players. Bruce is third among active players (13th all-time) with 785 career receptions. Those accolades are on top of him being the Rams leader in all receiving categories all-time. One of the things that I think, other players, when they do their Pro Bowl balloting, when they look at Isaac, not only does he run terrific routes and catch the ball and all of those good things, but [he is] very unselfish, said Rams head coach Mike Martz during his Monday press conference. He does an outstanding job down the field in terms of effort and making good blocks. In the season opener at San Francisco on Sept. 11, Bruce hauled in three receptions for 61 yards, with a 29- yard touchdown reception.
