3 AME 1 WESTERN MICHIAN VS. WEST VIRINIA AME NOTES ON THE ROAD AAIN Western Michigan opens its 2nd season against West Virginia at Milan Puskar Stadium. It will mark the third time in as many seasons that the Broncos will open a season on the road. WMU last opened a football campaign at home in 04 when Tennessee-Martin visited Waldo Stadium. NEW FACES IN NEW PLACES The Bronco coaching staff underwent signifi cant changes during the offseason, replacing fi ve coaches from its 06 staff. Place Kicker: one is Nate Meyer who had been on the fi eld for nearly all of WMU s fi eld goals, extra points and kick offs over the past two seasons. He scored the third-most points ever by a kicker (84) in 06 and hit a game-winner against Miami. The man left to replace Meyer is senior Mike Jones. He has one fi eld to his credit, a 22-yard make against Temple. He will responsible for all of WMU s placekicking duties. Bill Miller comes to Kalamazoo as the program s new defensive coordinator. Miller was most recently at Arizona State where he served as the DC for the Sun Devils. He has been the defensive coordinator Michigan State and Miami (Fla.). rant Heard comes to WMU as the program s new receivers coach from his alma mater Ole Miss where he was a graduate assistant for the past two seasons. Scott Kavanagh is the Broncos new quarterbacks coach. The former Wisconsin quarterback spent the last three seasons at Cornell where he worked with the Big Red s receivers (04) and quarterbacks (05-06) under head coach, and former WMU assistant, Jim Knowles. Peter McCarty takes over as Western Michigan s defensive line coach, moving Tim Daoust over to coach the Broncos talented secondary unit. McCarty was most recently on the coaching staff at former Mid-American Conference institution Central Florida. He and Bill Cubit have worked at the same schools (although not during the same years) twice as McCarty has also spent a pair of seasons at Stanford. Bob Stanley brings his 37 years of coaching experience to Kalamazoo as the Broncos offensive line coach. Stanley spent last season at New Mexico after spending at Kansas State. CLEATS FOR A CLIPBOARD A starting defensive end for the Broncos last season, Matt Ludeman has turned in his cleats and is now a member of the coaching staff. Ludeman enters his fi rst season as the defensive graduate assistant. His playing career was extended this summer when he participated with Team USA in Japan, winning the American College Football Tournament. TRIFECTA The Broncos opponent may have a pair of talented runners but WMU will a trio of able-bodied ball carriers at the Mountaineers. Senior Mark Bonds is the second back in as many years to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. He is just 237 yards from the top- on the all-time list. Joining Bonds in the backfi eld are Brandon West and lenis Thompson. As true freshmen, West and Thompson gave Western Michigan a punch as West amassed 633 yards on the ground and Thompson proved to be a downhill runner much like Bonds. WHAT TO WATCH FOR Robbie Krutilla and Branden Ledbetter fi nd their names among the nation s elite in their respective positions. Krutilla has been named to a pair of preseason watch lists and Ledbetter has earned a spot on one. Krutilla is on the Rimington Trophy Watch List (the award for the nation s best center) as well as the Outland Trophy (the award for the nation s best interior lineman). It is the second year he has made it onto the Rimington preseason list. Ledbetter fi nds himself on the John Mackey Award Watch List (the award for the nation s best tight end) for the fi rst time. He was named the Mackey Tight End of the Week once last season after amassing 1 yards receiving against Miami. FILLIN IN THE APS Even though Western Michigan returns 15 starters (seven on the offense and eight on the defense) there are gaps at key positions that need to be fi lled. Quarterback: It has been the burning question during this past spring and preseason camp. Who will replace Ryan Cubit under center? There are three candidates in Tim Hiller (05 MAC Freshman of the Year), Thomas Peregrin (won games over Toledo and Virginia) and Drew Burdi (redshirt freshman). Linebacker: This unit was hardest hit during the offseason, losing a pair of starters in Ameer Ismail and Paul Tithof. This pair anchored the outside linbacker positions over the past two campaigns. Remaining is the team s Defensive MVP from 06, Dustin Duclo. Alongside him will be Austin Pritchard and newcomer Boston Mc- Cornell. McCornell is a JC transfer from eorgia Military School. Offensive Line: The Broncos lost just one member of this unit, Dominic Moran. The most experienced unit on the team is anchored by Robbie Krutilla. Filling at left guard is Phillip Swanson, a redshirt freshman. CAPTAIN O CAPTAIN For the fi rst time in program history, Western Michigan football will not have season captains. This season the Broncos will have game captains selected prior to each game. WVU IU MIZZOU CCSU UT UA NIU BSU EMU CMU IOWA TEMPLE Louis Delmas, Anthony ebhart, Robbie Krutilla FOR LOVE OF THE CORPS Western Michigan s receiving corps built valuable experience in 06 and returns a pair that fed life into the Broncos offense last year. Jamarko Simmons led the team with 668 yards on 61 receptions, including 172 yards on 13 receptions in the International Bowl. Herb Martin, in his fi rst year at the Division I level, fi nished 06 with 365 yards and four scores on catches. Adding to the Broncos group of receivers are the return of Jordan White from a knee injury, freshman Juan Nunez and JC Transfer Schneider Spida Julien. Julien will also see the fi eld as the WMU punt return man. LUCKY NUMBER SEVEN Western Michigan is coming off back-to-back seasons with seven or more wins - the magic number to ensure bowl eligibility. Impressive as that is, another season with seven or more wins would only rank third all-time. The most consecutive seasons WMU has won seven or more games is six ( ). WMU went a combined over that span. Ranking second is a span of four seasons ( ) when the Broncos wen 31-15, won nine games (00) for only the second time in program history and appeared in a two-straight MAC title games. Another eight-win campaign would put this team in a class by itself for being the only one to capture back-to-back seasons with eight wins or better. POLL POSITION Western Michigan was chosen by the Mid-American Conference News Media Association (MNMA) to not only win the West Division but take the conference crown home to Kalamazoo. WMU has steadily risen up the MAC West standings after fi nishing last in 04 with a third-place fi nish in 05 and a secondplace fi nish last season. 07 WESTERN MICHIAN FOOTBALL AME NOTES 3 WEEK 1 #3 WEST VIRINIA SEPT. 1 MILAN PUSKAR STADIUM

It is something that describes the chosen hairstyle of three of the four starters in the defensive secondary for WMU (Louis Delmas, E.J. Biggers and C.J. Wilson) and it also describes the feeling of the offense when facing this unit last season. Londen Fryar led the unit with fi ve picks but it was a group effort six backs compiled 18 of the team s 24 interceptions: Londen Fryar: 5 (returned one for a TD) Louis Delmas: 4 E.J. Biggers: 4 C. Wilson: 3 (returned one for a TD) Anthony ebhart: 1 Desman Stephen: 1 (returned one for a TD) THE BEAST WITHIN If each positional unit needs to act as one being, then WMU s offensive line is a beast of a being. The unit has produced back-toback 1,000-yard rushers and led the MAC last year, ranking 14th in the country, in sacks allowed per game (1.31). TEU No, this is not a proposed satellite campus for Western Michigan. It stands for Tight End U. WMU has produced some of the best tight ends in recent school history with Jake Moreland, Mobolaji Afariogun and Tony Scheffl er, the top-three ranked tight ends in Bronco history, having played here in the past years. Now there is a new crop that is looking to climb the ranks led by Branden Ledbetter. Ledbetter along with Keith Schultz and Matt Stevens combined for of WMU s passing touchdowns in 06 and Ledbetter ranked second on the team in receiving with 423 yards. FAR EAST MEETS WESTERN MICHIAN For the entire 07 season a Japanese collegiate football coach will be shadowing the Western Michigan program. Masatoshi Isowa spent all of spring and preseason camp in Kalamazoo learning coaching techniques from the staff. He will stay with the program until the conclusion of the season. He is also shadowing math courses in order to bring different teaching techniques back to Japan. PULLIN RANK Western Michigan has played 18 teams ranked in the top-25 at the time of the game. Even though the Broncos are still searching for their fi rst win over a ranked opponent, they have come close on several occasions. the highest ranked team (No. to face Western Michigan since the Broncos opened up the 1999 campaign with No. 4 Florida and the 00 season with No. 4 Wisconsin. 5 AME 1 WESTERN MICHIAN VS. WEST VIRINIA AME NOTES West Virginia, Neve Faced: Pittsburgh, Rutgers, South Florida, Syracuse Conversely, West Virginia has played against nine of the 13 members of the MAC and boasts a record of : Ball State, Bowling reen, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Temple, Western Michigan, DON T LOOK NOW If you think Patrick White is just a running quarterback, think again. Through just two seasons with the Mountaineers, White is already the career leader in passing effi ciency (149.07) and completion percentage (.625). He is also the career leader for rushing yards by a QB with 2,171 yards on 296 carries and he had 18 rushing scores in 06 alone. SCORIN MACHINE Steve Slaton may not touch the ball on every play but in 06 it sure seemed like it. The then true sophomore scored 16 touchdowns last season, scoring at least once in all but three games and scoring two touchdowns six times. Slaton has 33 rushing TDs in his two-year career, which ranks fourth on WVU s all-time list. Teammate Patrick White is right behind him in fi fth place with 25 rushing scores. CLOSIN THE DOOR EARLY West Virginia did not use a lot of time to establish itself in games, outscoring the opposition, , the fi rst quarter of games. The Mountaineers outscored their opponents by 38 points in the second quarter of games and an amazing 96 points in the third quarter. NOT A ONE-TRICK PONY West Virginia has a good running game... this is true. But the passing game is there as well. Six different Mountaineers caught touchdown passes in 06 but none more than Brandon Myles who hauled in a team-best eight en route to 522 yards receiving on 36 catches. ON THE OTHER HAND With every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Following that theory, if West Virginia s vaunted ground attack is the action then Western Michigan s sixth-ranked run defense is the reaction. WMU held of 13 teams under 0 yards net rushing in 06, including three opponents that did not reach double digits in team rushing and another that could not manage positive numbers: Temple: 9 yards Northern Illinois: 0 yards Ball State: 9 yards Akron: minus-13 yards PICK EM OFF AT THE PASS West Virginia s Patrick White had seven interceptions last season against 13 passing touchdowns. He along with Jarrett Brown combined for eight WVU interceptions. WMU registered a national best 24 interceptions a year ago and was held without at least one pick just once - vs. Florida State. TALE OF THE TAPE WMU vs. WVU will pit strength on strength in many statistical areas and provide interesting positional match ups throughout the afternoon. Rushing: West Virginia ranked second in the country in 06 with 3.0 yards per game on the ground, while Western Michigan ranked sixth in the nation by allowing just yards rushing per game. Passing: Neither team boasted a top-75 passing offense a season ago but pass defense was an area where these two teams part ways as WMU had a pass defense that ranked 57th, while the Mountaineers ranked 9th. Sacks: The Broncos led the nation in sacks per game with 3.54, while WVU was very protective of its signal callers, allowing just 1.15 sacks per game to rank second in the country. Punting: Field position is a big part in winning the game and WVU holds the edge, ranking 29th witha average, while WMU ranked 111th with a.62 average. Turnover margin: WMU ranked seventh in turnover margin, while WVU ranked 25th. Both are respectable rankings but the Mountaineers held a +7 (24-17) advantage in the give away/take away department and the Broncos held a +12 advantage (34-22). WVU DO s & DON T S Each game comes down to things you must do to win and things you cannot do if you want to win. Here are this week s Do s & Dont s: DO: Control the clock and keep WVU s offense on the sideline where it is impossible for Slaton and White to score (almost). DON T: et out of the originial game plan with the Mountaineers post a couple quick scores. Playing WVU s game will only benefi t WVU.
