12 2006 SEASON PREVIEW When the calendar changed from 2005 to 2006, all of the accomplishments of the past year s Western Michigan football team became another part of the program s 100-year tradition. For the team and its coaching staff, the process of looking forward to the needs of 2006 began much sooner. In three games Cubit completed 60.2 percent of his passes (65- for-108) and tossed six touchdowns. He made his season debut at Toledo (Sept. 10) but had his season come to an end at Temple (Sept. 24) just three weeks later. The Broncos will enter the upcoming campaign with 11 fifth-year seniors to anchor the squad and provide leadership. The Broncos have 20 juniors on the roster, including a trio of junior college transfers. The talented freshman class from a year ago returns 31 members and is one year older and one year more experienced as many saw a heavy load of game action during their first season donning the Brown & Gold. Eighteen student-athletes were made redshirt freshmen heading into the upcoming season and WMU officially welcomed 19 true freshmen to the University on National Signing Day, Feb. 1. Bronco Coaching Staff Western Michigan returns nearly its entire coaching staff from the 2005 season. Coach Bill Cubit enters his second season at the helm of the Broncos after earning 2005 MAC Coach of the Year honors. His staff underwent only one personnel change in the off-season with former linebackers coach Chuck Bullough leaving to take a post as the linebackers coach for the UCLA Bruins. Due to the change, defensive line coach Steve Morrison will take over as linebackers coach and retain is duties as a recruiting coordinator. This left the responsibility of the defensive line vacant until Tim Daoust was announced this past winter to fill the void. Daoust completed a year as graduate assistant at Cincinnati in 2005 after previously serving as the cornerbacks coach at Illinois State (2004) and as a graduate assistant at Northern Illinois ( ). Daoust was a four-year member of the Wittenberg football team where he earned his degree in Returning for their second season as well will be defensive and offensive coordinators Scott Shafer and George McDonald. McDonald also serves as the team s receivers coach. Mike Sullivan will continue his duties with the offensive line and Jake Moreland enters his second season as the tight ends coach. Tim Lester returns as the quarterbacks coach. On the defensive side of the ball Paul Williams will coach the Bronco secondary for the second season. Brian Rock returns for his 15th season in the program, handling the Bronco running backs and special teams unit. Quarterbacks Coach Tim Lester Western Michigan enters 2006 with a higher level of depth at this position than a year ago. Entering 2005, the Broncos had signal callers in just two classes. This season, there will be a quarterback in every class, beginning with the return of senior Ryan Cubit. A passing offense that ranked 32nd in the country and fifth in the Mid-American Conference ( ypg) returns redshirt freshman Caleb Clark, sophomore Dennis Reedy and 2005 MAC Freshman of the Year Tim Hiller. Hiller is still rehabilitating a knee injury that occurred during the season finale at Northern Illinois. Junior college transfer Thomas Peregrin, who has already enrolled at WMU and began taking classes on Jan. 9, will join fellow newcomer Drew Burdi from Downers Grove, Ill., at the position. Peregrin holds passing records in attempts (546), completions (348), yards (4,662) and touchdowns (39) at Bakersfield College, while Burdi recorded 3,100 passing yards, a 63.0 percent completion rate and 15 touchdowns during his high school career. Wide receivers Coach George McDonald Greg Jennings is now a former Bronco football student-athlete but his influence resides in the receivers that return in A corps of nine returning receivers will be joined four newcomers, including a pair of junior college transfers. The group, led by 11-game starter Joe Chapple, accounted for 58 receptions, 465 yards and four touchdowns. Chapple had a breakout game against Eastern Michigan (Nov. 5), hauling in four catches for a career-high 75 yards and a touchdown. He, along with Jamarko Simmons, accounted for two scoring grabs apiece. Ben Bleck-Owens, Fernand Kashama and Kelly Martin each made a handful of starts in 2005 and will make the move from strong safety to wide receiver. Transfers Herb Martin from Pasadena City College and Stephen Penn from Valley Forge Military Academy will only strengthen this group. The duo registered a combined 50 receptions for 1,119 yards and 17 scores during their final seasons at their respective junior colleges. Juan Nunez, a top-25 receiving recruit in Dade County in Florida, Jamelle Murray and Jordan White headline the list of incoming freshmen receivers for the Broncos. Running backs Coach - Chris Tabor WMU s rushing yards per game a season ago, ranked 57th in the country and fifth in the MAC, will need to replace a 1,000- yard running back for the first time since entering the 2003 season spring football 11

13 2006 SEASON PREVIEW Trovon Riley provided a running game that allowed the Broncos to take the ball inside and outside. Top returnee Mark Bonds is a bruising back that runs down hill directly at you. The junior registered 456 yards and three scores on 101 carries. His 4.5 yards per carry trailed Riley by one-tenth a yard for best on the team. Seth Quivey and Kirk Elsworth saw limited time in the backfield in 2005 but made an impact on special teams with Elsworth ending the season as the team s kick returner. Jamarko Simmons transitions from wide receiver to running back in The Broncos recruited a trio of running backs to offset Bonds power. Bobby Crawford and Glenis Thompson hail from Florida, while Brandon West comes to Kalamazoo by way of Georgia. West scored three touchdowns in the GACA All-Star game and Thompson was a two-way threat, also starting at linebacker in high school. Crawford played for national power Saint Thomas Aquinas and was an offensive option running ball and catching it out of the backfield. Tight Ends Coach Jake Moreland Four tight ends return for the 2006 season, including Joe Gardner, Brandon Ledbetter, Keith Schultz and Matt Stevens. Ledbetter led the way for the returning tight ends with 11 catches for 76 yards and two touchdowns. Gardner scored his lone touchdown against Temple. Schultz appeared in one games on the special teams unit, while Stevens redshirted his freshman season. A pair of freshmen tight ends comes to Kalamazoo to solidify the position. The duo hails from the state of Michigan. Ben Hunderman calls Zeeland home and James O Neill is from Grand Haven. Offensive Line Coach Mike Sullivan This unit does not register the statistics like a running back, quarterback or linebacker. These players are judged making impacts and not making mental mistakes. This is something unit coach Mike Sullivan prides himself on throughout the season. The anchor of the Bronco line is the center. Robbie Krutilla snapped the ball for all of WMU s 834 offensive plays in In all, six letterwinners return up front for the Brown & Gold in Of the 15 total returnees, there is only one senior, Dominic Moran. James Blair, Steve Ellingsen, Matt Williams, Rob Johnson and Chris Bartula all made starts a year ago with Williams showing the most diverse ability. The junior guard was the only offensive lineman to make starts at three different spots on the line - left guard, right guard and right tackle. Dezmond Gray was a reserve lineman in 2005 and made his impact on special teams. Newcomers Nick Clemens, Nick Mitchell and Phillip Swanson bring more size and depth to the Broncos in the trenches. Clemens and Swanson are above the 300-pound mark as they close out their high school careers, weighing 320 and 313, respectively. The six-foot-three Mitchell is not far behind at 280. Defensive Line Coach Tim Daoust Coach Daoust inherits a young but extremely experienced defensive line as it loses just two members to graduation. Nick Varcadipane is coming off a season where he ranked second on the team in tackles for loss (8.0) and sacks (5.5) and was chosen second-team Freshman All-America by CollegFootballNews.com. Sophomore John Russell is the lone returning defensive tackle with game experience from 2005, appearing in seven games as a true freshman. Chris Pyant, who ranked in the Detroit Free Press Michigan Fab 50, will join this group as a freshman in 2006 out of Farmington Hills, Mich. Anthony Belmonte and Matt Ludeman are the senior members of a corps of defensive ends. The duo combined for 78 tackles (38 solo), 8.0 TFL and 6.5 sacks at the end spot. They are joined by Zach Davidson, who registered two interceptions during his redshirt freshman campaign, Mike Palace, who appeared in a pair of games, James Randall, Jon Roddy and David Smith. Newcomers Mark Berghuis, Jaymeson Moody and Anthony Williams will add to a unit that boasts nine members prior to the trio s arrival in the fall. The nose guard position, vacated by 2005 captain Paul Moersch, will be filled by Cory Flom, who made four starts and appeared in all 11 games, Grant Nemeth and Cody Cielenski. Linebackers Coach Steve Morrison Western Michigan s most stacked returning unit in 2006 may be its linebackers. All three starters are back with Ameer Ismail and Paul Tithof entering their final season in the Brown & Gold. Ismail broke out in 2005, earning All-MAC honors and ranking nationally in TFL (20.0) and sacks (8.0 sacks). Tihof battled back from an early-season injury to register 38 stops and a fumble recovery for a score. Dustin Duclo, the lone underclassmen linebacker returning to his starting role, played his way into a scholarship last year and looks to continue his improvement with every defensive snap. His season was highlighted by a two-interception performance against Southern Illinois (Sept. 17). The linebacker unit is one of the team s deepest, boasting 16 returnees and welcoming newcomer and Michigan native, Matt spring football 12

14 2006 SEASON PREVIEW Pickens. Sophomores Austin Pritchard and Greg Marshall made the largest impact of the returning non-starters as Pritchard (54 tackles) appeared in all 11 games and made four starts and Marshall (34 tackles) appeared in seven games, each as true freshman. Cornelius Robinson also provided a spark, appearing in nine games and recording seven stops and one interception. Secondary Coach Clayton White When it comes to youthful talent, you need to look no further than the WMU defensive backfield. Coach Williams is happy to return a starting secondary that has a junior, Antwain Allen, as its most senior member and an All-MAC honoree and CollegeFootballNews.com Freshman All-American in Louis Delmas. Allen returns as the team s leading tackler (95) from a year ago. Delmas rejoins classmate E.J. Biggers and sophomore C.J. Wilson in a secondary that also returns senior Jimmie Vincent as well as four underclassmen. Londen Fryar makes the switch from receiver to cornerback. Cavaliers, who finished last season 7-5 and 3-5 to finish fifth in the Coastal Division of the ACC, handed WMU a loss to open Fellow ACC member and conference champion Florida State will host Western Michigan to Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium in The Seminoles, who finished 2005 ranked No. 23 in both the Associated Press and USA Today polls, defeated the Broncos in the two program s only previous meeting, Florida State fell to Penn State, 26-23, in triple overtime at the FedEx Orange Bowl. A date for this game has not been confirmed at this time. WMU s final non-conference opponent is scheduled to be Temple. The game is scheduled to take place at Waldo Stadium. A date for the game will be determined once the Mid-American Conference officially releases the 2006 league docket to its 12 member institutions. The Broncos traveled to Philadelphia in 2005, handing Temple a loss on the strength of a 25-yard field goal from Nate Meyer as time expired. Andy Dorcely of Miami and David Coleman of St. Mary, Ga. (high school teammate of Brandon West), will join the defensive backfield in 2006 as a corner and strong safety, respectively. Special teams Coach Chris Tabor The Bronco special teams unit returns Nate Meyer as its place kicker and Jim Laney as its punter. Meyer began the season as the team s kick off specialist as well but those duties with Mike Jones mid-way through the season. Brett Meldrum also returns for his second season after his redshirt 2005 campaign. Meyer made good on 12-of-19 field goals and was 9-of-10 from inside 40 yards. His season was highlighted by a four field goal performance at Virginia (Sept. 3) and a game-winner at Temple. Laney averaged 40.8 yards per punt and recorded a career-long 65 yard boot against Ball State (Oct. 8). He registered nine touchbacks and knocked 18 kicks inside the opponents 20-yard line. Schedule Two-thousand six will be a test for the Broncos whether competing in or out of conference. The Hoosiers of Indiana, who have agreed to play the Broncos in Kalamazoo in the future, welcome WMU to Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Ind., on Sept. 2. Indiana finished 2005 with a 4-7 record and a 1-7 mark in the Big Ten. Western Michigan will battle the first of two Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponents on Sept. 16 when the Broncos return to Charlottesville, Va., to face the University of Virginia. The The usual MAC West suspects, Northern Illinois, Toledo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Ball State will battle the Broncos again in WMU went 2-3 against the division in 2005 and holds an all-time record of against the four institutions. Western Michigan will cross over its divisional boundaries for three contests against MAC East opponents. Conference champion Akron appears on the schedule for the first time since 2001 when WMU defeated the Zips, The Broncos travel to Ohio for a showdown at Peden Stadium. The Broncos hold a slight edge over the Bobcats in the all-time series and defeated Ohio, 39-32, in the last meeting in Miami is the third interdivisional match-up for WMU. The Redhawks hold a edge in the all-time series and have taken the last two meetings against the Broncos. 19 2005 SEASON REVIEW Head Coach Bill Cubit wanted to put a process in place for his football staff and team to follow. This process would be in effect not only on the field but in the classroom, on campus and in the community as well. The process began Dec. 7, 2004 when Cubit was announced as the Broncos 14th football coach for the program s centennial season. The process resulted in a 7-4 record, the nation s second-best one-year turnaround, and a 5-3 mark in the Mid-American Conference, the biggest one-year turnaround in MAC history. The process also benefited the Bronco program on the individual level. Coach Cubit was named the MAC Coach of the Year, while Greg Jennings was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Year and shared the Vern Smith Leadership Award with Toledo s Bruce Gradkowski. He was also named Associated Press, Sports Illustrated and College Football News All-America and was a Biletnikoff Award semifinalist. Freshman Tim Hiller, who was forced into duty midway through the season, was named the MAC Freshman of the Year. Cubit, who led the Broncos to their first winning season since 2000, ranked second among first-year head coaches in 2005 in wins and led all first-year Division I-A coaches in winning percentage. The Broncos 54.5 percent change bested second-ranked Charlie Weis in his first year at Notre Dame by 29.5 percent. Cubit and his staff did all of this with the youngest team in Division I-A football. A national best 35 true or redshirt freshmen played in 2005 for the Broncos. A Division I-A record 17 started for the Brown & Gold. Jennings became the first wide receiver to win both the Vern Smith Award and the Offensive Player of the Year Award since Randy Moss (Marshall) in Prior to this season, there had never been a tie in the 24-year history of the award. But this is a history-making season for the Broncos. Jennings finished with the all-time receptions (238), touchdowns (39) and all-purpose (5,050) records. He also owns the single season marks for receptions (98), touchdowns (14) and yards (1,259). Jennings was a leader in the truest form during his final campaign and for his efforts this year, leading the nation in receptions per game (8.91) and ranking second in touchdowns and yards per game (114.45). Virginia. Senior quarterback Ryan Cubit was still hampered by a preseason injury, thrusting fellow senior Robbie Haas into the starting role. Haas came through with career highs in completions (33), attempts (48) and yards (271). The star of the day was place kicker Nate Meyer. Meyer booted four field goals in WMU s loss to the Cavaliers, earning MAC West Division Special Teams Player of the Week honors. Jennings began his final season in Brown & Gold in record-setting fashion with a school recordtying 16 catches for 156 yards. It would be the first of eight game, season and/or career records he would own or share by the end of the season. Western Michigan opened conference play at Toledo on Sept. 10. The Rockets, who emerged victorious 56-23, made the Broncos play catch up for most of the second half but the game was highlighted by the debut of Cubit behind center, finishing 20-of-32 for 215 yards and an eight-yard touchdown strike to Jamarko Simmons. Simmons would later score again, pouncing on the ball in the end zone after true freshman Kirk Elsworth blocked a punt. Elsworth s block would be the first of eight blocked kicks of one kind or another in 2005 for the Broncos. WMU began a three-game winning streak by taking down the top-ranked Division I-AA Southern Illinois Salukis, Cubit hooked up with Jennings for a pair of scores and senior running back Trovon Riley made his season debut one to remember, rushing for 150 yards on 29 carries. Riley would finish the season as a Second-Team All-MAC selection and as the first running back to rush for 1,000 yards or more since His 1,004 yards and yards per game ranked second in the MAC and 16th in the country. A defensive star emerged in Dustin Duclo as the redshirt Hiller played in seven of 11 games, making five starts, and in all but one conference game. During this short time, he amassed 20 touchdowns and 1,334 yards en route to being named MAC Freshman of the Year. Despite being ineligible for conference and national rankings, Hiller s passing efficiency of was better than MAC leader Phil Horvath s (NIU) and Rudy Carpenter s (175.01), Arizona State s signal caller ranked as the nation s most efficient quarterback. Hiller s 20 scoring strikes rank third all-time for a single season at WMU and is the best performance by a freshman ever. 20 2005 SEASON REVIEW The following week showed Ball State on the schedule, a 7 p.m. kick off. When the first whistle blew, not one of the 18,183 fans in attendance would have guessed that the contest would last four hours, 13 minutes, go through five overtimes and become the longest game in MAC history and in the NCAA in The score stood knotted at 37 at the end of regulation and ultimately resulted in a win for the Cardinals. Hiller had replaced Haas at quarterback and had shined. When the dust settled on the longest game in program history, Hiller had thrown five touchdowns and run for another and Jennings had set a school record with four touchdown receptions and a career-high with 244 yards receiving. The performance earned the senior wide out MAC West Division Offensive Player of the Week honors and a place on SportsIllustrated.com s Top-10 National Player on Oct. 10. freshman intercepted two passes, his last sealed the victory. A trip home for the Cubit family resulted in the Broncos next win as Western Michigan traveled to Philadelphia and defeated future conference rival Temple, 19-16, on a last-second field goal off Meyer s foot from 25 yards out. It would mark the first of two games in professional venues for WMU, playing the Owls at Lincoln Financial Field and later squaring off against Eastern Michigan at Ford Field. The victory was bittersweet as Ryan Cubit went down with a season-ending leg injury, putting pressure on Haas and newcomer Hiller to perform. Western Michigan took its bye week to remove the memory of the Ball State loss and to continue the process of preparing for Bowling Green. The Falcons handed WMU a 52-0 loss at Perry Stadium in The return trip would not be the same as the Brown & Gold rolled up 45 points en route to a win over BGSU. Matt Ludeman and Ameer Ismail opened the scoring with a sack, forced fumble and 53-yard return. Ismail garnered MAC West Division Player of the Week honors on his way to a First- Team All-MAC selection. Hiller tossed three touchdowns, including an 89-yard bomb to Jennings for one of WMU s six one-play drives of the season. Ismail followed up his performance at Bowling Green with another much like it against Kent State on Oct. 29. The junior linebacker stripped the Golden Flashes quarterback of the ball, which allowed fellow linebacker Paul Tithof to scamper 44 yards for the score. Ismail finished the year leading the team in sacks (8.0) and tackles for loss (20.0). He ranked 34th in the country in sacks and tied for sixth in TFLs. The process Cubit had the team follow instilled the notion that if you take care of things Sunday through Friday, Saturday will take care of itself. That theory would be tested as two new signal callers were taking snaps with the first team the Monday after returning from the East Coast. Haas got the nod against Buffalo on Oct. 1, a win for the Broncos at Waldo Stadium. Freshman Hiller did see time on the field and was more than efficient, connecting on 3-of-7 passes for 28 yards and two TDs. One scoring pass was caught by Jennings and the other by senior tight end Tony Scheffler, two receivers the rookie would become very familiar with over the remainder of the season. Jennings even threw a pass to Joe Chapple, resulting in a 22-yard touchdown spring football 19

21 2005 SEASON REVIEW With the younger members of the team gaining so much experience, and accolades Louis Delmas (Second-Team All-MAC selection), Hiller and Nick Varcadipane all earned Freshman All- America honors the corps of this program will only strengthen as it heads into the off-season and spring practice session. The process did not end with the 2005 season in DeKalb, Ill. It merely took on a new form. The players and coaches now will follow the process in a different way, preparing for the challenges that face them in the days, weeks and months to come. The success of Western Michigan football lies in the dedication and hard work of many. There are moments when the work may outweigh the reward but in the end, it s all a part of the process. Western Michigan continued its winning ways at Ford Field, defeating Eastern Michigan, The win also ensured a winning season for the Broncos for the first time since the 2000 campaign. The offense had another strong showing has Hiller threw four touchdown passes and Riley finished with 151 yards on the ground. Scheffler followed up his seven receptions for 131 yards against Kent State with six grabs for 41 yards and two scores against the Eagles. These types of performances garnered Scheffler First-Team All-MAC honors and placed him fourth in the final voting for the John Mackey National Tight End of the Year Award. Scheffler, who ranked third nationally among tight ends in receptions per game (5.81) and fifth in yards per game (60.9), finished his career second among tight ends at WMU in receptions (117) and yards (1,345) RESULTS. The victory won the Broncos the inaugural Michigan MAC Football Championship sponsored by the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame and set up a monumental match up with Northern Illinois in the season finale. GARY SHOOK CHARLOTTESVILLE Western Michigan embarked on its 100th season of football with a hard-fought loss to 23rd/25th-ranked Virginia Saturday at Scott Stadium. The Broncos played without the services of five starters (QB Ryan Cubit, LB Paul Tithof, LB Darrell Copeland, CB Desman Stephen and DT Joe Alvarez) and used 18 freshmen (10-true, 8-redshirt) in the contest, yet trailed only by five points after three quarters. Senior QB Robbie Haas, who had attempted just nine passes in three seasons, earned his first start and completed 33-of-49 passes for 271 yards. Receiver Greg Jennings tied a school record with 16 receptions, collecting 156 yards. "All we asked of the kids today was to play as hard as they could and do things the right way," said Cubit. "And they did everything we asked of them -- they left everything on the field. I'm proud of our players and coaching staff." At first, it appeared the Cavaliers might put the game away in the first half. UVa jumped out a 24-3 lead, converting a pair of turnovers (fumble, interception) into 10 points. QB Marques Hagans accounted for two TDs, opening scoring with a two-yard pass to Tom Santi and later sneaking the ball in from the one-yard line. Following a Connor Hughes 36-yard field goal, RB Michael Johnson found the end zone from seven yards out to give the Wahoos a 24-3 cushion with 12:25 left in the second quarter. The Brown & Gold crawled back into the game behind the leg of junior Nate Meyer, who converted on four field goals, including three in the first half. 25 2005 GAME-BY-GAME RECAPS Week #3 Western Michigan 34, Southern Illinois 28 Sat., Sept. 17, 2005 Waldo Stadium Kalamazoo, Mich. GARY SHOOK KALAMAZOO Western Michigan extended its winning streak of home openers to nine straight with a come-from-behind victory over Southern Illinois before a crowd of 24,497 at Waldo Stadium. The Salukis entered the game ranked No. 1 in Division I-AA. The win also snapped a 13-game losing streak for the Broncos that dated to last season. Southern Illinois jumped out to a lead in the first half, scoring first on CB Brad Brachear s 79 yard interception return off a Ryan Cubit errant pass. The Broncos briefly seized the lead before the opening quarter expired when Nate Meyer converted on a 20-yard field goal attempt and Greg Jennings caught an eight-yard touchdown pass from Cubit. The Salukis responded with touchdowns on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter. QB Joel Sambursky connected with SE Brent Little on a 58-yard pass, then found WR Micah Turner from nine yards out. RB Trovon Riley, making his season debut, brought the Broncos to within four, 17-21, just before halftime, scoring on a five-yard run. Riley rushed 30 times for 156 yards, surpassing the century mark for the third time in his career. WMU claimed the lead for good with 7:56 left in the third quarter. Cubit hit TE Tony Scheffler in the back of the end zone on a goal-line play, and following a SIU fumble on the next possession, teammed with Greg Jennings on a 19-yard pattern just 27 seconds later. Nate Meyer s successful PAT gave WMU a cushion. SIU closed the gap to three points on Craig Turner s one-yard run in the fourth quarter and after Meyer s second field goal of the game, the Salukis regained the ball with a chance to go ahead with under a minute to go. SIU s drive, however, was stranded on WMU s 42-yard line when Dustin Duclo intercepted his second pass of the game with 37 seconds left in regulation. I m so happy for the players, to have the monkey off their back, said Bill Cubit. It s nice to walk into the locker room and see so many smiles. 26 2005 GAME-BY-GAME RECAPS Week #4 Western Michigan 19, Temple 16 Sat., Sept. 24, 2005 Lincoln Financial Field Philadelphia, Pa. GARY SHOOK PHILADELPHIA Western Michigan is on a two-game winning streak after junior place kicker Nate Meyer booted a 33-yard field goal through the uprights as time expired to give the Brown & Gold a win over Temple. The Broncos came back from an 11-point first half deficit to defeat the Owls at Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday afternoon. Despite Meyer kicking the game-winning field goal as time expired, the turning point in the game came on what initially looked to be a Temple third quarter touchdown. Owls signal caller Mike McGann hit Jamel Harris in the red zone but before Harris could cross the goal line, Scooter McIntosh stripped the ball on the two-yard line and Ameer Ismail took the recovery 18 yards to the 20-yard line. Both teams played the field position game over the next several possessions. The Broncos tilted that battle in their favor when Jim Laney grooved a 53-yard punt that was downed by Londen Fryar at the one-yard line. It was the third time in the past two games Fryar has downed a punt within the opponent's five-yard line. Western took over for the fateful final drive with 1:48 remaining. Robbie Haas, who relieved injured Bronco Ryan Cubit completed the only two passes he threw during the drive and relied on reserve running back Mark Bonds for the remaining yardage. Bonds carried the ball six times for 17 of his 36 yards, setting up Meyer's decisive kick. "I was just trying to take my focus off the big situation and just do what I do in practice," said Meyer. "I was just thinking about how much I wanted to win for the team and keep myself calm and relaxed." The game began in a peculiar way after Temple drove the ball 72 yards and scored on a Josh Bundy two-yard run to take a 6-0 lead. The ensuing extra point attempt was blocked by senior nose guard Paul Moersch and returned for a two-point conversion by Ismail. It was the first time in school history that this had been accomplished. Ismail was busy all day, finishing with a career-high 15 tackles (four solo). After a second Temple touchdown, the Broncos struck twice through the air. Cubit, who finished with 191 yards passing on 18-of-29 passing, hit Joe Gardner in stride for an eight-yard touchdown. Two possessions later, Cubit connected with Greg Jennings from 17 yards out on fourth and one to give WMU a lead. Jennings' score gave him 28 career touchdown receptions, passing Steve Neal (27) for the most in Bronco football history. Temple closed out the first half with a 26-yard field goal off the foot of Ryan Lux. Umar Ferguson led the Owls with 115 yards rushing on 33 carries as Trovon Riley paced the Broncos with 96 yards on 27 touches. Brian Allbrooks caught four balls for 84 yards, while Western's Tony Scheffler hauled in seven catches for a team-leading 118 yards. Defensively, three Broncos finished with double-figure tackles. Along with Ismail, freshman Greg Marshall finished with 14 stops (five solo) and Anthony Belmonte added 10 tackles. 28 2005 GAME-BY-GAME RECAPS Week #6 Ball State 60, Western Michigan 57, 5 OT Sat., Oct. 8, 2005 Waldo Stadium Kalamazoo, Mich. GARY SHOOK KALAMAZOO Greg Jennings eclipsed the 3,000-yard mark for a career and broke a record for the most receiving touchdowns in a game (4). Tim Hiller, a true freshman, tosses five scoring passes, which is tied for second all-time in a single game. In total, 544 yards of offense for the Broncos, and it wasn't enough as Ball State snatched away a WMU win in the fifth overtime, Brian Jackson's 30-yard field goal in the fifth overtime ended the longest game in Mid-American Conference history, giving Ball State a win over Western Michigan (3-3, 1-2) on Saturday night. After Jackson hit the kick, he was mobbed and knocked to the turf by his teammates in celebration. It was Ball State's (1-4, 1-1) first win since last November, snapping a five-game losing streak. "Two teams played their hearts off. It's too bad there has to be a winner because both football teams played hard," said Ball State coach Brady Hoke. "We were fortunate because it could have gone either way." The teams combined for 1,090 yards of total offense and 16 touchdowns in a game that took four hours to complete. It was the longest NCAA game this season, but fell two overtimes short of the NCAA record. "We had a ton of chances to win, but just didn't finish," said Western coach Bill Cubit. "They got it done and we didn't; give them a lot of credit. We had a lot of outstanding individual performances, but it just didn't work out." Both quarterbacks - Ball State's Joey Lynch and Western's Hiller - threw for more than 300 yards. Lynch completed 23 of 40 passes for 306 yards. Jenning's school-record fourth touchdown catch in the third overtime gave Western (3-3, 1-2) a chance to win, but the Broncos' 2-point conversion failed. Jennings had a career-best 244 receiving yards, pushing his career yardage over 3,000. Western's Nate Meyer had two chances to win it; he missed a 49-yard field goal on the last play of regulation and missed a 32-yard kick on the final play of the fourth overtime. NOTES Most combined points in Western Michigan history (previous high: 103 points WMU over Kent St in 1996)... Greg Jennings 11 catches give him 201 for his career (only the second Bronco to exceed 200 catches-steve Neal) and his 244 yards gives him 3,015 in his career (only the second Bronco to exceed 3,000 career yards-steve Neal)... Greg Jennings increased his school record to 34 career touchdown receptions and set a new school record with four TD receptions in one game... Greg Jennings increased his streak of games with at least one reception to 29 straight... Greg Jennings had the second 200-yard receiving game and 14th 100-yard game of his career... Tim Hiller became the fifth player to ever throw for 5 TD in a gametied for second all-time... Louis Delmas blocked PAT return for a touchdown is the second this season and the second in program history for the Broncos (Ameer Ismail vs. Temple)... Brandon Ledbetter's second quarter TD reception was the first of his career... Trovon Riley had his fourth career 100-yard rushing game True freshman quarterback Tim Hiller threw for 308 yards and five touchdowns on 20 of 27 passing in Western Michigan s five overtime loss to Ball State. 29 2005 GAME-BY-GAME RECAPS Week #7 Western Michigan 45, Bowling Green 14 Sat., Oct. 22, 2005 Doyt L. Perry Stadium Bowling Green, Ohio GARY SHOOK BOWLING GREEN - Two interceptions, two blocked kicks and a 53-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown were the kinds of plays Western Michigan used to build a 31-6 first half lead and eventual win over the Mid-American Conference East Division leading Bowling Green Falcons at Doyt L. Perry Stadium on Saturday. The Falcons and Omar Jacobs took their second drive of the game 80 yards on eight plays and put the first six points on the board on a B.J. Lane oneyard dive into the end zone. Nate Fry s ensuing point-after attempt was blocked by Cory Flom. It was the third extra point attempt blocked by the Bronco defense this season. The other two were returned 92 and 90 yards, respectively, for two-point scores. This started the woes for Bowling Green. All-everything quarterback Jacobs was again moving the ball down the field when Matt Ludeman and Ameer Ismail converged on the signal caller for a 13-yard sack and fumble. Ismail, who was one of the Broncos to return a blocked PAT for a score, scooped up the loose ball and scampered 53 yards to the house. Ismail finished with nine stops and two sacks for a combined loss of 20 yards. Nate Meyer made true on the extra point and WMU led 7-6 at the 3:59 mark of the first quarter. Jacobs left the field, spraining his non-throwing shoulder and was replaced by redshirt freshman Anthony Turner. Jacobs did not return. BGSU s defense had held Western s offense in check to that point but the Broncos stepped it up on their next drive. The Brown & Gold began the drive on their own eight-yard line after Fry s 37-yard punt. It was at that point that Tim Hiller, the Broncos freshman quarterback, began to heat up. Hiller opened the drive with a 10-yard completion to Greg Jennings, who extended his consecutive games with a catch streak to 30. Trovon Riley, finishing the game with 120 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries for his third 100-yard rushing game of the season, rambled for four yards before Hiller connected with Jennings again for five yards. The Orrville, Ohio native carried the ball twice for a combined nine yards and then let Riley show off his skills, busting open on a run of 17 yards to Bowling Green s 30-yard line. Hiller ran the ball again for a gain of six to get the ball to the Falcons 16-yard line. He found Jennings in the back of the end zone for the senior s 35th career touchdown and a 14-6 second quarter lead. The 92-yard drive was the longest in terms of yards this season for the Broncos. The next scoring drive would not take nearly as long. Cornelius Robinson s first career interception came off the tip of Dustin Duclo and came at an opportune time. BGSU was driving and had taken the ball to Western s 24 and was threatening to cut into the Bronco lead. Robinson came up with the pick at the 11 to give his team the ball back. Hiller and Jennings needed just one play to drive the 89 yards in 12 seconds to give WMU a 21-6 lead at the 8:28 mark of the second quarter. Jennings finished the half with seven catches for 156 yards and the game with eight catches for 162 yards. His throw-and-catch partner Hiller had 212 yards and two scoring strikes in the first half and 258 yards and three touchdowns on 16-of-25 passing for the game. Special teams became spectacular when Bowling Green drove to the Broncos 20-yard line. Fry attempted a 37-yard field goal but Paul Moersch rose up to get a hand on the ball. Anthony Belmonte finally recovered the ball at the 49-yard line of the Falcons and returned it to the 38. From there, WMU took five plays and 1:47 of game time to improve its lead to Riley burst over the line for his third score of the season. WMU scored again at the end of the half, capping a 12-play, 70-yard drive with a 22-yard field goal by Meyer. The 31 points by Western Michigan were the most scored by the Broncos in any half this season. WMU Notes Western's win at Bowling Green was the largest margin of victory over a MAC opponent since defeating Ball State, 42-3, in 2000 The win stopped Bowling Green's 20-game home winning streak Was the largest margin of defeat at home for BGSU since Central Michigan defeated the Falcons, 38-7, at Doyt L. Perry Stadium; was the second-largest margin of defeat for BGSU in the 38-year history of the stadium The Broncos' 45 points matches Miami (1999) and WMU (2002) for the second-most points scored by an opponent in Perry Stadium Greg Jennings extended his streak of consecutive games with a catch to 30 Paul Moersch has three blocked kicks in 2005, setting the single-season record and tying the career record at Western Michigan31 first-half points are the most in any half in 2005 Cory Flom (98) fully extends to block Nate Fry s point after attempt during the first quarter of WMU s win over BGSU. 30 2005 GAME-BY-GAME RECAPS Week #8 Western Michigan 44, Kent State 14 Sat., Oct. 29, 2005 Waldo Stadium Kalamazoo, Mich. GARY SHOOK KALAMAZOO On a day when Greg Jennings became Western Michigan s all-time leader in all-purpose yards, Tony Scheffler had a season-high 131 yards receiving and Trovon Riley matched a career-best with two touchdowns, the Broncos used a relentless defensive effort to hand Kent State its sixth-straight loss, 44-14, at Waldo Stadium on Saturday. Western Michigan (5-3, 3-2 MAC) scored on its second drive, needing only three plays to take a 7-0 lead at the 10:02 mark of the opening quarter. Riley scored the first of his two touchdowns from five yards out. That play was set up by a Tim Hiller to Scheffler 43-yard hook up on the previous play. It was the longest reception of the senior tight end s career and put him on his path to 122 yards in the first half. He would finish with 131 yards and a touchdown on seven catches to lead all receivers. Riley closed out the first quarter with a jaw-dropping, juke-filled 31-yard run at the 1:49 mark. The drive began at the Broncos three-yard line after the Golden Flashes (1-7, 0-5 MAC) failed to convert on fourth and one. Hiller, who finished with 246 yards on 19-of-29 passing hit Sheffler for a 24-yard touchdown for the only scoring of the second quarter, giving Western Michigan a commanding 21-0 lead. The Brown & Gold had amassed 269 yards of offense in the first 30 minutes and had pitched a shutout on the defensive side of the ball. But football is played for 60 minutes. Kent State opened the third quarter with a seven-play, 57 yard scoring drive of its own. Michael Machen hit Najah Pruden from 20 yards out for the Golden Flashes first score. Machen finished with 336 yards passing, the second 300-yard aerial effort of the season. Pruden led the receiving corps with six catches for 125 yards. Western Michigan could go nowhere with its next drive, having to punt after only three plays and eight yards, giving the Broncos 12 yards of second-half offense at that point. Kent State took over at its own 40 and had driven to the Broncos 37 when the WMU defense came knocking. Last week it was Ameer Ismail who scooped a fumble for a score. On the eve of Halloween, it was Ismail who delivered the trick to KSU s Machen, and Paul Tithof recovered the treat, scampering 44 yards for the touchdown. It was the third defensive score of the season at that point for the Broncos and gave them back a 14-point edge, Ismail led the attack with 11 tackles (five solo), 4.5 tackles for a combined 26-yard loss, one forced fumble and 2.0 sacks for a loss of 18 yards. From there, the defense took over. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Louis Delmas recorded the first safety at Western Michigan since Jack Gitler at Northern Illinois (Oct. 20, 2001). Delmas also finished with double-digit tackles (10). Zach Davidson would not allow Tithof and Delmas to get all the glory. The redshirt freshman defensive end stepped in the path of a Machen pass and rumbled 31 yards for the first touchdown of his career. The defense accounted for 16 of Western Michigan s 44 points and could not have come at a more crucial time of the game. Kent State had been averaging 58.1 rushing yards per game and did not do anything to improve that average as the Bronco defense held the Golden Flashes to one net yard rushing. WMU Notes Western has won the past 12 meetings against the Golden Flashes Greg Jennings set a new school record for career all-purpose yardage with 4,690 yards Greg Jennings extended his streak of consecutive games with a catch to 31 Western scored first for only the second game this season (Buffalo 10/1) 97-yard scoring drive in the first quarter was the longest of the season Second straight week WMU has returned a fumble for a touchdown (Ismail vs. BGSU 53 yards; Tithof 44 yards vs. KSU) Louis Delmas safety was the first for WMU since Jack NIU 10/20/2001 Tony Scheffler (85) hauled in seven catches for 131 yards and a touchdown against Kent State on Homecoming. 31 2005 GAME-BY-GAME RECAPS Week #9 Western Michigan 44, Eastern Michigan 36 Sat., Nov. 5, 2005 Ford Field Detroit, Mich. GARY SHOOK DETROIT Western Michigan battled back and forth with its intra-state counterpart, but when all was said and done, the Broncos emerged victorious, 44-36, over Eastern Michigan to improve to 6-3 and 4-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The victory ensures the first winning season for the Brown & Gold since Western Michigan built a lead midway through the third quarter, but a Dwayne Harrison eight-yard run and 25-yard touchdown reception for Travis Lewis left the Broncos with a lead and Eastern Michigan still having an extra point to attempt. Eagles head coach Jeff Genyk decided to go for the twopoint conversion instead and failed, giving WMU the ball back with a little over six minutes to play and that precious one-point lead. Prior to the dramatics of the fourth quarter, the Broncos dodged a bullet in the closing moments of the first half. Clinging to a three-point lead and Eastern at the Broncos four-yard line, the defense came through again for WMU as C.J. Wilson intercepted the ball at inside the three-yard line and returned to near midfield. Western Michigan not only maintained its advantage, the Broncos added to it. Nate Meyer kicked a 44-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to send the Brown & Gold to the locker room with a edge. It was Wilson s second pick of the season. The redshirt freshman had a pick-six against Virginia to open the season. The first half opened with a bang as each team scored on its first possession. The Eagles capped a 65-yard drive with a Matt Bohnet to Eric Deslauriers six-yard touchdown. Deslauriers finished with 14 catches for 166 yards and the score. A. J. Bennett also recorded a 100-yard receiving day for the Eagles with 13 catches for 122 yards. The Broncos answered back with a 10-play, 78-yard drive, which resulted with Tim Hiller hitting Tony Scheffler in the corner of the end zone from 14 yards out. Scheffler had five catches for 35 yards and two scores in the first half alone. It is the first multitouchdown game of the senior tight end s career. Hiller (23-of-31, 243 yards) threw four touchdowns on the day, the second time in his career the true freshman has tossed four scoring strikes in regulation. Joe Chapple notched the second touchdown of his career. The junior was on the receiving end of a 43-yard Hiller pass that found him matched up in single coverage down the middle. A blocked extra point gave Western Michigan a 13-7 edge at the 2:37 mark of the opening quarter. EMU answered with an 11-play drive that chewed up 83 yards and was capped off by a 25-yard touchdown pass from Bohnet to Christopher Graham for receiver s first-career touchdown. Graham would score again, this time from nine yards out late in the third quarter. The extra point gave the Eagles a lead early in the second quarter. Graham. Bohnet had four touchdown tosses on the day to go along with 398 yards on 39-of-57 passing. Trovon Riley busted across the goal line at the 9:39 mark of the third quarter for his sixth touchdown this season, giving Western Michigan a lead. Riley rushed for 151 yards on 26 carries for his fourth 100-yard rushing effort of the season. On EMU s next drive defensive end Anthony Belmonte reminded everyone that the Bronco defense was not done making impact plays. Belmonte stripped the ball from Anthony Sherrell and Ameer Ismail recovered for WMU at Eastern Michigan s 23-yard line. Hiller connected with Brandon Ledbetter from nine yards out. The score gave the Broncos a lead in the third quarter. WMU Notes Game is inaugural Michigan MAC Football Championship, sponsored by Michigan Sports Hall of Fame First time Western Michigan has played at Ford Field Tony Scheffler records first multi-touchdown game of career Tim Hiller throws four touchdowns in a game for second time in career Western Michigan ensured its first winning season since the 2000 season with a win over Eastern Michigan. 32 2005 GAME-BY-GAME RECAPS Week #10 Western Michigan 31, Central Michigan 24 Sat., Nov. 12, 2005 Waldo Stadium Kalamazoo, Mich. KALAMAZOO - It seems like a broken record but the Western Michigan football team faced adversity, down two scores at one point, and its defense provided the spark to kick start the offense. The Broncos went on to score 31- straight points en route to a victory over Central Michigan on Senior Day at Waldo Stadium. The victory gives WMU the inaugural Michigan MAC Football Championship sponsored by the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame. Western Michigan (7-3, 5-2 MAC) fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter. Kent Smith put his Central Michigan (5-5, 4-3 MAC) squad in front on a 26-yard strike to Justin Harper. On the pass Smith became CMU s all-time leader in completions in a season. The drive took 3:39 off the game clock and lasted 10 plays. The Chippewas next drive was much of the same, taking 5:07 off the clock and lasting 11 plays. This time Ontario Sneed scored from five yards out to put the Broncos arch rival up by two scores early. Smith finished with 460 yards passing on 46-of-71 passing. Sneed managed 89 yards on the ground, while Harper and Damien Linson each eclipsed the 100-yard mark with 136 and 108 yards, respectively. The crowd of 23,484 was worried, to say the least. But the Brown & Gold were just getting warmed up. After CMU failed on a 41-yard field-goal attempt, Tim Hiller and Greg Jennings spent little time on the field before the lead was cut in half. On the 24-yard line, Hiller stepped back and hit Jennings on a post and the senior all-everything wide out did the rest. Seventy-six yards later, Western Michigan was in the end zone and trailed by only seven, The WMU defense made itself known, as it does in every game at the biggest of moments. With the Chippewas on their own 20-yard line, Sneed coughed up the ball and freshman cornerback Kennard Banks recovered it before it trickled out of bounds. On the next play, Hiller it Jamarko Simmons in the back of the end zone for a seven-yard score, tying the game. Central Michigan was forced to punt on its next drive. Hiller and Jennings connected again for the score, this time from 40 yards out. It was the third one-play scoring drive of the game and the fourth of the season. Three of the four one-play drives have resulted in a Hiller-to-Jennings touchdown. The Broncos added a fourth score near the end of the half when Hiller hit Tony Scheffler from four yards out for the team s third touchdown of the quarter. The drive, lasting 13 plays and covering 79 yards, began due to another Bronco defensive moment. This time, Nick Varcadipane picked off a Smith pass. In all, Smith had three miscues, throwing interceptions to Varcadipane, Zach Davidson and Austin Pritchard. Hiller s four touchdowns give him 20 on the season, moving him into third all-time for scoring tosses in a season. He finished with 239 yards on 16-of-29 passing and no interceptions. Jennings was Jennings great. The Kalamazoo, Mich. native had 171 yards and two scores on nine catches. He did most of his damage in the first half, hauling in eight passes for 164 yards. His performance puts him a top yet another list in the Bronco record book. He now has 1,208 yards this season, breaking the single-season mark previously held by Steve Neal with 1,121 (2003). Jennings needs just five catches and 112 yards to eclipse the all-time career receptions and receiving yards records at Western Michigan. He also needs just one more score to become only the second player in MAC history to have 40 or more touchdown receptions. The second half belonged to Trovon Riley, who rushed for 100 or more yards for the fifth time this season. Riley had 53 yards on nine carries in the first half and added 73 yards in the second as the senior rushed for 126 yards and is 43 yards from the first 1,000-yard season of his career. After a Nate Meyer field goal from 25 yards out, Western Michigan led with 5 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The goal was to control the clock and the ball for much of the fourth quarter but this is a rivalry game and nothing comes easy. Central Michigan cut the Bronco lead to 10 on a Sneed s second score of the game. The Chippewas cut the lead to a touchdown after Isaac Brown stripped Scheffler of the ball late in the fourth and drove to the Broncos four-yard line. CMU was forced to settle for a field goal. Western Michigan could not run out the clock but Central Michigan, with no time outs and 60 seconds remaining on the clock, could not drive the 80 yards needed to tie the score and a desperation pass into the end zone fell to the ground as time expired. Greg Jennings hoists the Michigan MAC Football Championship trophy over his head after the Broncos completed the season sweep of Eastern Michigan (44 36) and Central Michigan (31 24). 33 2005 GAME-BY-GAME RECAPS Week #11 Northern Illinois 42, Western Michigan 7 Wed., Nov. 23, 2005 Brigham Field at Huskie Stadium DeKalb, Ill. DeKALB, Ill. -- A valiant season, the best turnaround in Mid-American Conference history, came to a heartbreaking end as the Broncos fell to MAC West Division Champion Northern Illinois, 42-7, on Thanksgiving Eve in front of 18,361 fans at Huskie Stadium. GARY SHOOK Western Michigan (7-4, 5-3 MAC) put the first points on the board when Robbie Haas, stepping in for the injured Tim Hiller, connected with Tony Scheffler for a 19-yard touchdown at the 10-minute mark of the opening quarter. Northern Illinois (7-4, 6-2 MAC) answered soundly with 28-straight first half points. The Huskies took the lead and control of the game on the strength of 180 yards on the ground during the first two quarters, led by junior running back Garrett Wolfe s 156 yards and three scores on 26 carries. Wolfe scored his 28th, 29th and 30th career touchdowns during the first half alone. He was not finished, ultimately carrying the ball 36 times for 277 yards and five touchdowns. NIU also struck from the air as redshirt freshman Dan Nicholson connected with Sam Hurd, who finished with 107 yards on three receptions, from 53 yards out for the Huskies third score of the day, three minutes into the second quarter. Trovon Riley eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark for the first time in his career with 47 yards against the Huskies. It marked the first time a Bronco had reached the millenium mark rushing since BOX SCORE Nov. 23, 2005 Brigham Field at Huskie Stadium - DeKalb, Ill. Scheffler paced the Bronco aerial attack with nine catches for 68 yards and the one score, his ninth of the season. Haas touchdown completion to his senior counterpart was his first scoring strike since hitting Greg Jennings from 40 yards out at the 8:43 mark of the first quarter against Ball State on Oct. 8. Jennings overtook Steve Neal for the WMU all-time receptions record. He finished the day with seven catches and his career with 238, attaining the record by three receptions. The Biletnikoff Award semifinalist came up short on yardage, finishing with 3,539 career receiving yards. Trovon Riley came into the season finale needing 43 yards to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career, carrying the ball 15 times for 47 yards. Riley s 1,004 yards on the season makes him the first running back at WMU to reach four digits in the rushing column since Philip Reed did so with 1,053 yards in The Huskies, who earn a trip to the MAC Championship Game due to a defeat of Toledo a week ago, will face either Bowling Green or Akron on Dec. 1 at Ford Field live on ESPN2.
