Rob Catloth will look to build on the accomplishments of the program and will hope to continue to keep Kansas in close competition with the top teams in the country. Catloth s success at Kansas was recognized nationally in the summer of 2000 when he was selected to coach with University of Pennsylvania coach, Barb Kirch, at the U.S. freshman and preelite camp at the ARCO Olympic Training Center. "To me, both Kansas and Kansas City are filled with opportunity," Hemenway says. "KU wants to be a better partner to the entire state." Hemenway remains a committed scholar and teacher. He is known for his biography of African American novelist Zora Neale Hurston, a "Best Books" pick by the New York Times in 1978 and a Quality Paperback Book Club selection in Hemenway still teaches a 7:30 a.m. undergraduate English course most semesters. 20 The Kansas rowers completed another successful season last spring after finishing six regattas against some of the toughest competition in the country. Last season proved to give the team valuable experience that they will use this season as they begin another challenging spring schedule. The eight seniors who lead the team this season showed considerable improvement and will be looking to lead the team in Leadership In 2003, the Jayhawks were able to return a large portion of their roster from the previous season. The seven-member senior class provided leadership, but there was still room for some of the juniors and sophomores to gain valuable experience as underclassmen. Seniors Jasmin Smith, Jen Van Ruyven, Erin Harrington and Luci Lyon were upperclassmen that added 1st Varsity 8 experience to the roster in 2003 along with juniors Beth Hickey, Amber Snyder, Casey Smith and Hayley Dool, and sophomore Kristy Hainer Season Last spring, Kansas continued to build on the eight-year history of the rowing team by taking the challenge of a very difficult schedule. The Jayhawks travelled across the country, competing against some of the most elite collegiate rowing teams in the nation. The Jayhawks were on the road for a majority of the season as the team hosted their only home regatta, the Big 12 Invitational on May 3. The Crimson and Blue opened the season with a trip to Season-in-Review Austin, Texas to face off against Big 12 foe Texas on March 29. The Longhorns swept the Jayhawks in each of the five races, but the Jayhawks were able to rebound quite nicely as the season progressed. This season the team brings back a very strong senior class with eight returning seniors. Kansas then continued on the road for a trip out east to compete in the 2003 Knecht Cup on April in Camden, N.J. The Jayhawks, who took home top honors at the 2000 Knecht Cup, faced several tough teams from the East Coast over the two-day event. Kansas had a successful weekend of competition highlighted by a first place finish in the 2nd Varsity 8 Petite Finals, as the team finished ahead of Buffalo and West Virginia. The other three boats made it through to the Grand Finals of the Cup. The Varsity 4 boat finished in fifth place and the Novice 8 crew came in with a third place finish. The Novice 4 boat finished in third place and the 1st Varsity 8 boat did not qualify for competition in the finals. O n April 19, KU headed back to somewhat familiar territory to face off against its intrastate rival, the Kansas S t a t e Wildcats, in t h e Sunflower Showdown on April 19 in Manhattan. The Junior Kristy Hainer is one of the underclassmen who will help to lead the Hawks this season Crimson and Blue fared quite well and claimed victories in four of the five events, giving the team its fifth consecutive Kansas Cup trophy. The Jayhawks took first place in the 2nd Varsity 8, Varsity 4, Novice 8, and Novice 4 races. Kansas earned 15 of the 23 points awarded to win the trophy. "We did pretty well considering the poor conditions that we raced in," head coach Rob Catloth said. "Our goal was to come in and win our fifth consecutive Kansas Cup, and we showed up and did it." The following weekend, the Hawks made a trip to Cincinnati, Ohio, to match up with the University of Cincinnati on April 26. The Jayhawks once again were victorious in four out of five races with first place finishes in the 2nd Varsity 8, Varsity 4, Novice 8 and the Novice 4. After four consecutive regattas away from home, the team returned to Lawrence for the Big 12 Invitational on May 3. Kansas 1st Novice 8 boat highlighted the event with a first place finish in the Grand Finals. "Our freshmen (1st Novice 8 crew) have been doing pretty well this year," Rob Catloth said following the race. "They've been really fast and have done really well all year long." The Jayhawks then returned home for the Big 12 Invitational. The Hawks finished in third place as a team with 40 points in the event. Texas took the Big 12 trophy with a total of 55 points, followed by Kansas State with 43 points. The season concluded with a trip to Oak Ridge, Tenn. as the team looked to earn a spot in the NCAAs at the Lexus Central- South Region Sprints on May Kansas' 1st Novice 8 boat once again highlighted the weekend coming in first in the Petite Finals, good for a fourth place ranking in the Central Region. In the 1st Varsity 8 competition, Kansas finished first in the D Final to notch a 10th place Central Region spot. Kansas' 2nd Varsity 8 boat took fourth in the Petite Final, good for seventh in the Central Region. Kansas 20 Rowing
