4 NAIA WELCOME 6120 South Yale Avenue, Suite 1450 Tulsa, Oklahoma Telephone 918/ FAX 918/ December 16, 1995 Dear NAIA Participants: It is with great pleasure that I welcome all student-athletes, coaches and spectators to the 1995 NAIA Division II Football National Championship. As an association, the NAIA serves the student-athletes at our member colleges and universities by creating for them an environment in which they can succeed academically as well as athletically. This Association of approximately 370 member institutions strongly believes that athletics is an integral part of an institution's total educational program. Further, any action taken on the part of the Association is done to ensure that our studentathletes reach two goals at the end of their collegiate careers. The first goal is the attainment of a college degree, and the second is the satisfaction of competing to the highest level of their athletic ability. Congratulations and best of luck to all student-athletes competing at this year's Division II football national championship! Sincerely, 1~~.Mmes R. Chasteen NAIA President and CEO 3

5 UNIVERSITY OF FINDLAY T he University of Findlay's outstanding academic programs are one of the primary reasons that enrollment has set new records each of the last 13 years. Career-oriented degrees noted for their unusual attention to preparing students for the rigors of real life jobs have gained national attention. Bachelor degree programs that have generated interest by students from across the country include environmental and hazardous materials management, pre-veterinary medicine, bilingual multicultural education, nuclear medicine technology and equestrian studies, both western and English riding. The University of Findlay continues to expand into new academic programs where graduates are highly in demand. Starting this year, there are degree completion programs in occupational therapy and physical therapy. The University also began offering innovative graduate programs during the past several years. Meeting regional needs for advanced degrees, Findlay offers a master of arts in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) and bilingual education; a master of arts in teacher education, focusing on teacher leadership in elementary education and special education; and a master of business administration degree. In August of 1994 a master of science degree in environmental management, which will complement the undergraduate hazmat program, was approved. The University of Findlay's attention to students' needs for education which prepares them well for the work place and is offered at times and places convenient to their lifestyles has positioned the institution for further growth in the '90s. Leading the NAIA in fewest yards allowed this season was the status quo. During the former defensive coach's 21- year tenure at Findlay, his teams claimed national titles in '79 and '92 and compiled a record. Strahm was named NAIA Coach of the Year after both championships and Area VII Coach of the Year in '78. Strahm began his career with league championships at Lakota, Bryan and Western Reserve before becoming the defensive coordinator at his alma mater, Toledo. His defensive units were twice ranked best in the country during a 35-0 run. Strahm deployed the same strategies as defensive backfield coach at Kansas State for two seasons before joining Findlay in '75. Dick Strahm Head Coach 4

9 FINDLAY PLAYER FEATURE Bv DARIN DAVID, NAIA DIETZ WILL TRY TO COLLECT ANOTHER CHAMPIONSHIP A!though he never suited up for a championship team in little league or in high school, Cal Dietz has already accomplished the rarest of feats at the University of Findlay. As a two-sport star, he has played on national title teams in both football and wrestling. There are no stats kept on such notes, but the list would certainly be short. Playing for the best or close to the best changed his whole mentality. "Every year, we feel that we can win a national championship, and that's our only goal," Dietz commented. "In football, we won a national championship when I was a freshman. When I was a sophomore, we lost to the runners-up and the following year to the national champions. In wrestling, we have been ranked number one four or five times. It's a great feeling. " Dietz will play for his third ring today as the senior captain and anchor of the offensive line at strong side or left tackle. At 6- foot, 270 pounds, he protects quarterback Bo Hurley's blind side, and 70 percent of the offensive plays are run behind him. The Oilers' leader powered their wishbone offense to fifth in rushing nationally with yards per game. "I've been on lines where we did fancy blocking, but with this one, we've cut down on the fancy stuff and blown people off the ball," he said. "Sometimes we even tell the defensive line where we are going, and they still can't stop our main iso(lation) play." On the left side, Dietz was the only returning starter, so he was put in charge of making all the calls and adjustments for the line. Running backs Robert Shelton and Troy Pearson made their cuts off which way Dietz blocked. He became a somewhat reluctant leader. "I'm not a vocal person, but I had to be for the team," he said. "I have to get up in front of them before games and give a lot of speeches, which I had never done before this year. It makes you kind of nervous to get up in front of 50 guys after Coach (Dick) Strahm. I can tell when the team's ready or when they need to get focused and come back to reality." Strahm, too, was a little surprised that the quiet giant would be the one to rally his teammates. "He's not a noisy guy, so when he stands up at a team meet- 8 ing, you almost have to say 'Quiet, everybody'," Strahm added. "He's a very emotional young man, and he almost gets teary-eyed because he loves the game so much. He's just a good football player. There's never a problem with Cal because he's a great young man on and off campus. He represents college athletics the way they should be represented." As a freshman, Dietz played noseguard and did not travel to the '92 championship game. He eagerly moved to the offensive side of the ball and earned honorable-mention All-American honors last year. When football season ended, he re-joined the wrestling team, the Roughnecks, and finished fifth in the heavyweight division for Findlay's first title team. He has learned how to approach the big game. "This is the opportunity of a lifetime, and nobody can take that away," he said. "I've played just as well for both teams that I've been on, and I would not trade those moments for anything. Winning is just a part of Findlay. I feel like I matured a little more because there is kind of a winning feeling that I noticed." Much like the rest of the Oilers, hard work has been the building block for Dietz. Besides playing for two teams, he has maintained a 2.8 GPA in Health and Physical Education, and he works in a couple of departments on campus. He hopes to continue his love of sports as a strength coach after graduation. "I wanted a chance to succeed at both sports," he said. "That's what I did in high school, so I figured why not in college. It is like two different families. I love each of them dearly. The bonding between teammates is incredible, and there is never really anything else like that in your life. "Sports and national championships are nice, but it's the people who are great here. They back you up as far as the faculty, coaches and community." And the impact from Cal goes beyond the titles to Findlay, his teammates, and especially the coaching staff. "Cal and these guys are fun to coach," Strahm said. "Rather than coming in and saying, 'Coach, I have a problem', he will have a smile on his face and ask how I'm doing. Guys like him are why I've stayed in coaching for 21 years." +

The absence of starting quarterback Bo Hurley had put the brakes on Findlay before the offense started getting into sync. "In that second half, we became a good football team," Head Coach Dick Strahm said. "I remember saying, 'Our offense is struggling, but we can hang our hat on our defense.' Then the offense started to gel." Hurley returned in game three, and the Oilers began a 10-game winning streak that led them to the championship game. Through the last seven games of the regular season, Findlay outscored its opponents by an average of 46.1 to 6.0 on the way to being the best scoring, rushing and total defense. In three playoff wins against Pacific Lutheran WA, Malone OH and Lambuth TN, Findlay's opponents averaged 11.3 points per outing. Running the wishbone, Findlay racked up yards per game led by Robert Shelton's 1,013 yards on 5.5 per carry. One of his backfield mates, Troy Pearson (728 yards) led the team with 12 touchdowns, and Shelton added 11. Hurley was the team's third-leading rusher with 531 yards to go with 513 passing. Safety Nate Weihrauch picked off six passes and returned three for touchdowns, while linebackers Ray Long and Mike Powers each had over 100 tackles. "This is a bunch of over-achievers," added Strahm. "There are no superstars or anyone in the national stats. They're a bunch of blue-collar workers, and they just got better every week." 9

16 CENTRAL WASHINGTON PLAYER FEATURE B Y KEVIN HENRY, NAIA TROPHY MORE IMPORTANT THAN RECORDS TO KITNA J on Kitna is used to the questions. Seemingly every time he steps on the football field for Central Washington University, he is poised to break another school, conference or national record. And, seemingly every time he steps off the field, people are asking him which records he obliterated recently. Kitna has a simple answer to every question. "I just tell people to ask Bob Guptill (Central Washington's sports information director),'' Kitna said. "I let him worry about that. I'm more interested in winning games." And that's exactly what Kitna and his Wildcat teammates have done this year. Using the strength of Kitna's four touchdown passes, Central Washington topped conference rival and top-ranked Western Washington University on the road in the first round of the NAIA playoffs, The senior signal-caller followed that with a trip to the Lone Star State where he tossed five touchdowns as the Wildcats eliminated fifth-ranked Hardin-Simmons University, Kitna's recent playoff accomplishments just add to the incredible number of feats he has performed, including: the 38 outright school records and one tied school record he holds; the 20 outright Columbia Football Association records and one tied conference record he holds; and Kitna has earned more than 60 offensive records 16 ranking second in NAIA history in career total offense, a mark he could break in today's game. Not a bad set of statistics for someone who played just one year of quarterback in high school. "My sophomore year, I was the third-string quarterback and it didn't look like I was going to get much playing time as a junior, so the coaches asked me to move to wide receiver," Kitna recalled. "I think that year at wide receiver has helped me know where the holes in the defense are for a wide receiver and where the wide receiver wants the ball." Now in his fourth year as a collegiate quarterback, the Tacoma native still amazes his head coach, Jeff Zenisek. 'Just like two snowflakes are never alike, two plays for Jon are never alike," Zenisek laughed. "The Hardin-Simmons game is a perfect example. Hardin-Simmons called a blitz and we were running a play-action pass. They had him dead to rights, but he saw something out of the comer of his eye, stopped and threw the ball across the field for a completion. If he stays in the pocket, he'll get you. If you blitz him, he'll get you. He's one of those guys that you can slow down, but you really can't stop. The only person who can stop Jon is Jon." Despite all of the attention he draws from the opponent's defensive coordinator, Kitna knows he is not the only weapon for Central Washington. "I probably put more pressure on myself than any defense will put on me," Kitna said. "I know that other teams focus on me, but if they don't pay attention to the other players, their defense will get burned." Burning defenses has become somewhat common for Kitna. He has 33 career 200-yard passing games, including all 12 of the 1995 contests. He holds the conference records for most touchdowns thrown in a game (seven) and added a rushing touchdown in that contest to give him the mark for most total touchdowns (eight), but Kitna takes the greatest pride in holding the conference's single-season total offense mark. "When I first started at Central Washington, I really looked up to Marc Weekly (Pacific Lutheran quarterback who previously held the record)," Kitna explained. "To beat his record means a lot to me, and to top 4,000 yards in a season means that you're going to the playoffs. " Kitna believes the Wildcats' 1995 playoff berth and championship run is easily the exclamation point on what has been a tremendous career for him. "I can't imagine having a better senior year," Kitna said. "Everything I imagined has come true." While Kitna has a chance to become the NAIA's leader in both passing yardage and total yardage during today's game, he is much more concerned with delivering the Division II championship trophy to Ellensburg for the first time in school history. "I just hope that I can be remembered as the quarterback who brought Central Washington a championship,'' Kitna said. "Later I'll have the chance to look back on my records and really enjoy what they mean and the impact they have on NAIA football. But until then, I'm going to concentrate on winning the championship." +

The Wildcats opened the playoffs with a huge road test, playing top-ranked and conference rival Western Washington University at Bellingham. But Central passed the test and avenged a midseason loss by eliminating Western Washington, After taking the Thanksgiving weekend off, Central Washington flew to Texas and handed fifth-ranked Hardin-Simmons University a home defeat. Last week, almost home was sweet home for the Wildcats. The Wildcats travelled to Puyallup, Wash., where they earned a 48-7 win over the University of Mary. Central Washington overcame a season-opening loss at Montana State (34-14) and a 2-2 start to qualify for this year's playoffs, the school's first showing since Today is the first championship game appearance in Central Washington history. Offensively, the Wildcats are directed by senior quarterback Jon Kitna, who holds virtually every school and conference passing record. Fans attending today's game could see a historic moment: Kitna has the opportunity today to become the NAIA's all-time total offense record-holder in his final collegiate game. When Kitna isn't throwing the ball, he'll most likely be handing it off to Jamie Christian, who has 601 yards and 11 touchdowns on the year. Defensively, Central Washington is paced by linebacker Scott LeMaster (86 total tackles) and end Andy Lwanga (12 quarterback sacks). Defensive back Montreux Macon has recorded five interceptions to lead the Wildcat secondary. 17
