Coors Event Center (11,064) 7:00 p.m. Closing November The Northern Colorado women s basketball team plays its final game in the month of November when they travel to Boulder to take on the Colorado Buffaloes on Wednesday. The Bears are currently 3-2 and will end the month with a non-losing record for the seventh time in the last 10 years. The History This will be the 15th meeting between Colorado and Northern Colorado. The Buffs have won the last five games between the two clubs, dating back to There was a big gap in the series, with the two teams not playing from until The Bears are 2-6 all-time in Boulder and hold the 4-2 advantage in the series in Greeley. Split On The Road At the Aggie Thanksgiving Classic, the Bears split the two games dropping a decision to host New Mexico State and defeating Southeast Missouri State Against the Aggies, they battled back from 12 points down early in the second half and had a shot rim out at the end of the game. The Bears led almost wire-to-wire against the Redhawks, leading by as many as 19 during the game and held on to win by 11, Senior center Danielle Hagen and junior guard Whitley Cox both just missed averaging a double-double with Hagen averaging 9.5 points and 10.0 rebounds, while Cox averaged 17.0 points and 9.0 rebounds. Sour Double-Double Trouble Northern Colorado has had at least one player record a double-double in the four of the five games this season (Oral Roberts). Junior guard Whitley Cox has notched two; one in the opener against San Francisco with 25 points and 10 rebounds and one at New Mexico State with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Senior center Danielle Hagen tallied 12 points and a career-high 20 rebounds against Colorado State and freshman guard Kate Kevorken had 15 points and 10 rebounds against Southeast Missouri State. Last season there were only six double-doubles recorded in 29 games. Keeping Them Off The Glass At the Aggie Thanksgiving Classic, the Bears did a great job of limiting second chances. The Bears allowed just 10 offensive rebounds in the two games. This season, NC is getting 44.0 rebounds per game, while holding opponents to just 38.4 a contest. The +5.6 rebounding margin is tops in the Big Sky Conference this season. How Sweet It Is The win against Southeast Missouri State is the first victory for head coach Jaime White away from the friendly confines of Butler-Hancock. Last year, the Bears were 0-13 on the road and started this season 0-2 before the win over the Redhawks on Saturday snapped the streak. Quick Break The trio of junior guard Whitley Cox, freshman guard Courtney Stoermer and senior center Danielle Hagen are all averaging at least 34.0 minutes played per game this season. Cox leads the way with 35.4 per contest, while Stoermer is averaging 34.4 and Hagen is averaging Two other players, freshman Kate Kevorken and junior forward Jamie Schroeder are also both averaging better than 20 minutes a game with 23.4 and 22.2, respectively. I Know It s Early It may only be five games into the season, but at their current paces, senior center Danielle Hagen will break the school s single season rebounding record and junior guard Whitley Cox will break the single season scoring record. Hagen is averaging 11.4 rebounds per game, which puts her on pace for 331 and the school record stands at 291 by Susan Rupp from Cox leads the team with 20.2 points per game, which would give her 585 for the year. The current record is 555 by Missy Borell in Leading The Way - Team Wise Northern Colorado leads the Big Sky Conference in rebounding offense (44.0), rebounding margin (+5.6), defensive rebounds (30.6) and three-point field goals made (7.8), ranks second in scoring defense (62.4) and is third in three-point field goal defense (.247), rebounding defense (38.4) and offensive rebounds (13.4). MEDIA GUIDELINES All interview requests with any of Northern Colorado s coaching staff or student-athletes must be coordinated through media relations director Heather Kennedy. Interviews are prohibited from conflicting with classes, practice sessions, meetings or medical treatment. On-site interviews must take place at the conclusion of practice. STUDENT-ATHLETE INTERVIEWS Interviews with student-athletes are not permitted on the practice fields, in the locker room, or in the training room. Interviews with student-athletes are not permitted the day of a game. Media members are prohibited from interviewing student-athletes on the sidelines during all practices, including all injured student-athletes not participating in a practice session. Leading The Way - Individually In the individual Big Sky Conference statistics, senior center Danielle Hagen leads the league in rebounds (11.4) and defensive rebounds (8.8) while junior guard Whitley Cox ranks second in scoring (20.2) and fifth in defensive rebounds (5.4) and freshman Kate Kevorken ranks second in three-pointers made (2.8) and sixth in rebounds (7.0) Making Them Count In all five games this season, Northern Colorado has shot a better free throw percentage than the opposition. The Bears are shooting.710 from the charity stripe, compared to.641 for the opponents. NC has also shot a better percentage from beyond the arc than four of its five opponents and are hitting on.322 for the year, while holding foes to.247. A Long Time Coming For the first time since and the first time in 16 tries, Northern Colorado defeated Colorado State, defeating the Rams at Butler-Hancock on Tuesday. Junior guard Whitley Cox scored a game-high 25 points, matching her season high. She also led the game with five assists and made 13-of-14 from the free throw line. Senior center Danielle Hagen notched a double-double with 12 points and a career-high 20 rebounds. Freshman guard Kate Kevorken also came off the bench to tie her career-high with 16 points and hit five three-pointers and she notched a career-high eight rebounds. Northern Colorado hit a season-best 12 three pointers and six different players made at least one. The Bears defense also held the Rams to no three-pointers and forced 18 turnovers. Crashing The Boards Senior center Danielle Hagen shattered her career-high in rebounds and ended just two shy of the school record when she brought down 20 against Colorado State. Hagen s previous career high of 16 came against Cal State Fullerton on Nov. 20, The school record of 22 is held by Beth Lindquist vs. Colorado, 2/21/76 and Susan Rupp vs. Fort Hays State, 12/2/78. That s Offensive Northern Colorado is averaging 65.6 points per game through the first five games of the season after scoring just 55.6 a year ago. The Bears are also shooting quite a bit better as last year they hit.354 from the field,.292 from beyond the arc and.667 from the free throw line and this year they are connecting on.378 from the field,.322 from the three-point line and.710 from the charity stripe. Wire To Wire Northern Colorado led the game from the opening tip to the closing buzzer against San Francisco. The Bears scored the first nine points of the game and led by as many as 28 with just under 11 minutes to play in the second half. Last season the Bears never led a contest from the beginning through the end of the game. On The Horizon Northern Colorado continues to inch closer to a large program milestone. The win against Southeast Missouri State marked the 482nd win in program history and the team now needs 18 for 500. The Bears are all-time. This year marks the first year the Bears are also eligible to win the Big Sky Conference Championship as well as compete in the Big Sky Tournament. Chosen Ninth The University of Northern Colorado women s basketball team was chosen by both the Big Sky Conference coaches and media to finish ninth in league play during The Bears received 11 votes in the coaches poll and 34 in the media poll. Montana was picked to win in both the coaches and media preseason polls, while Idaho State is picked to finish second in both polls. Currently, the Bears sit in second place in the standings with the early 2-1 record. They re All A Threat Of the 10 players to have seen action in a game this year, nine have hit at least one three-pointer during their career with the Bears. This season, freshman Kate Kevorken leads the way with 14, while freshman guard Courtney Stoermer has nine, junior guard Whitley Cox has six and sophomore guard Chelsie Luhring has four. The only player to have not hit a three-pointer during her career is freshman Lara Merritt. Bears Add Three Head Coach Jaime White announced the signing of three student-athletes in Kaisha Brown, Courtney Kranz and Lauren Oosdyke. Kaisha Brown, 5-10, G/F, Spirit Lake, Iowa (Spirit Lake HS) Brown averaged 14.0 points and 4.9 rebounds per game as a junior with four games over 20 or more points in a game. Was a second-team All-Northwest Iowa Girls Basketball selection last year. Courtney Kranz, 6-3, C, Mendota Heights, Minn. (Visitation HS) Kranz is a three-time letterwinner entering her senior season with the Blazers. She is also a two-time all-conference selection and was the only unanimous pick as a junior. She helped lead her team to the conference championship last year and also is a three-time letterwinner in volleyball, where her team was three-time conference champions. She plays club basketball for the NC Heat where they placed third at the AAU Nationals last season. Lauren Oosdyke, 5-11, F, Coto de Caza, Calif. (Santa Margarita Catholic HS) Was a first-team All-Trinity League selection as a junior after being named a second-team all-conference selection in the Sierra League as a sophomore. She has also been named to several all-tournament teams throughout her career. Averages 10 points and eight rebounds per game to go along with a 58% field goal percentage from the field. Scouting The Buffaloes Colorado enters the game on Wednesday with a 2-2 record and they also split the Thanksgiving tournament, dropping an decision to Sienna before rebounding to defeat Rice Both Northern Colorado and CU have played San Francisco this year, with the Bears winning and the Buffs winning The Buffs are led by senior Jackie McFarland with 16.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. She also leads the club with a.571 (24-42) field goal percentage, 14 assists and of the players who have attempted five or more free throws, free throw percentage at.789 (15-19). Brittany Spears is the only other player averaging double figures, scoring 14.8 per game and she is also second in rebounds with 7.8 a contest. Colorado is averaging 67.2 points, 38.0 rebounds, 12.5 assists, 19.5 turnovers, 7.5 steals and 2.5 blocked shots per game, while shooting.420 from the field,.309 from the three-point line and.764 from the free throw line. Opponents are averaging 64.0 points, 31.0 rebounds, 12.3 assists, 17.0 turnovers, 6.5 steals and 1.8 blocked shots per game, while shooting.426 from the floor,.364 from beyond the arc and.730 from the charity stripe. A Glimpse Into The Future The Bears will host three straight next week, beginning with Pacific on Sunday afternoon. One Wednesday, NC finishes the Colorado Division I stretch, hosting Air Force at 7:00 p.m., then they host Columbia on Dec. 8 before taking a break for final examinations. The Bears return to action on Dec. 17 at Wyoming, host UMKC on the 19th and round out the calendar year at St. Mary s on Dec. 30.
