3 GENERAL MANAGER SCOTT PIOLI Scott Pioli was named the fifth general manager in Kansas City history by Chairman of the Board Clark Hunt on January 13, He comes to Kansas City after spending the previous nine seasons with New England, including the last seven as the Vice President of Player Personnel. During his tenure in New England, the Patriots won Super Bowls XXXVI, XXXVIII and XXXIX, claimed the Lamar Hunt Trophy four times as the AFC Champion and won six AFC East titles. A four-time winner of NFL Executive of the Year honors from national media outlets, Pioli served as the Patriots Vice President of Player Personnel from after originally joining the franchise in In total, he brings 17 seasons of NFL experience to the Chiefs organization after tours of duty with New England ( ), the N.Y. Jets ( ), Baltimore (1996) and Cleveland ( ). During his nine-year run with New England ( ), the Patriots compiled an NFL-best (.708) regular season record. Over that span, New England registered 14 playoff victories, tying the Pittsburgh and Dallas squads of the 70s for most playoff wins by a franchise in a single decade. New England also accumulated 11 playoff victories from , the highest total by any team over a five-year span in NFL history. During his time in New England, Pioli worked in close coordination with head coach Bill Belichick, bringing players to the Patriots who fit into the framework of the club s team concept. Pioli and Belichick became the first personnel director/head coach tandem in league annals to win three Super Bowls during a four-year span ( ). Their efforts also helped the Patriots register nine or more victories each of the last eight seasons, including the NFL s first 16-0 regular season in Pioli received George Young NFL Executive of the Year honors from The Sporting News following the 2003 and 2004 seasons, an award voted on by fellow NFL executives. The youngest individual ever to win that accolade, Pioli joined Bill Polian and Bobby Beathard as just the third person to ever win that honor in consecutive seasons. Named NFL Executive of the Year by the Dallas Morning News in 2001 and also received NFL Executive of the Year honors from Pro Football Weekly and Sports Illustrated in In 2004, Pioli s accolades included the NFLPA s Award for Executive Achievement in addition to NFL Executive of the Year awards from USA Today, the San Francisco Chronicle and SI.com. In 2007, Pioli again earned NFL Executive of the Year honors from Pro Football Weekly, the Dallas Morning News and the San Francisco Chronicle. WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING... Scott Pioli was an integral part of the many championships the New England Patriots have celebrated this decade and I would like to thank him for his countless contributions throughout the past nine seasons. Scott is a great evaluator of talent. He is thorough in his evaluations, extremely organized and has done a tremendous job mining all possible resources to help Coach Belichick and his staff field the players needed to win consistently. He has played an important role in building a championship tradition with players that I am proud to call Patriots. On behalf of the entire Patriots organization, I wish Scott continued success in his new role and offer best wishes to his wonderful wife Dallas, and their beautiful daughter Mia. I think Clark Hunt and the Kansas City Chiefs have made a very wise hire. - Robert Kraft New England Patriots Chairman and CEO To sum up in words everything Scott Pioli has meant to this organization and to me personally would be difficult, if not impossible. From the day I met him, he has demonstrated a passion for football and respect for the game that is second to none. It has been extremely gratifying for me to follow Scott s career ascension from the bottom of the totem pole in Cleveland to his place as a pillar of championship teams in New England. Now with the opportunity to steer his own ship and a vision of building a winner, there is no more capable, hardworking, loyal, team-oriented person than Scott Pioli. Working side by side with one of my best friends for almost two decades is special enough in itself. But to help each other achieve success beyond our dreams is a blessing and something I will always remember and appreciate. - Bill Belichick New England Patriots Head Coach You must realize that I m very prejudiced, but I think the Chiefs hired a very passionate, highly dedicated, enterprising young man to lead their franchise. - Bill Parcells Miami Dolphins Executive Vice President of Football Operations Scott has a great work ethic, which we saw from the beginning back in Cleveland. I think, too, there s an instinct and football intelligence you have to have to succeed as a general manager and he has those. - Ozzie Newsome Baltimore Ravens General Manager & Executive Vice President Congratulations to Scott for obtaining the GM job at such a fine organization as the Kansas City Chiefs. Scott did a wonderful job for the Patriots organization and will be sorely missed. The Patriots loss is Kansas City s gain. - Charlie Weis Notre Dame Head Coach

4 HEAD COACH TODD HALEY Todd Haley was named the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs by Chairman of the Board Clark Hunt on February 6, He spent the previous two seasons as the offensive coordinator of the Arizona Cardinals. Haley turns 42 on February 28th, making him the second-youngest head coach in franchise history. Haley enters his 15th season in the National Football League and his 13th campaign in a coaching capacity in He enjoyed previous NFL coaching experience with Arizona ( ), Dallas ( ), Chicago ( ) and the N.Y. Jets ( 97-00), earning playoff berths with each of those franchises. Helped the Cardinals win the NFC Championship and reach Super Bowl XLIII, marking the first time the franchise had advanced to the NFL title game since 47. Was a member of Bill Parcells N.Y. Jets staff that guided that franchise to the 98 AFC Championship Game. It was during his tenure with the Jets that he began his association with General Manager Scott Pioli, who served as Director of Pro Personnel for the Jets from Under Haley s guidance, the Cardinals offense in 2008 was one of the league s most innovative and explosive units. Arizona tied for third in the league in scoring, registering a franchise-record 427 points (26.7 ppg). The Cardinals were fourth in total offense, averaging yards per game. Arizona was second in the league in passing offense (292.1 ypg) and ranked sixth in the NFL with 20.5 first downs per game. Haley s offensive unit in Arizona featured a trio of Pro Bowl performers in QB Kurt Warner, WR Larry Fitzgerald and WR Anquan Boldin. With Haley handling the play-calling duties for the Cardinals, Warner led all NFC passers and established single-season franchise records with a 96.9 rating and 30 TD passes. He threw for 377 yards and three TDs in Super Bowl XLIII. Fitzgerald led all NFC receivers with 96 catches for 1,431 yards with 12 TDs. He enjoyed a seven-catch, 127-yard, two-td performance in Super Bowl XLIII and set NFL single-season postseason records for receptions (30), receiving yards (546), TD receptions (seven) and 100-yard games (four) during the 2008 playoffs. Boldin had 89 receptions for 1,038 yards with 11 TDs during the regular season, while WR Steve Breaston had 77 receptions for 1,006 yards, making the Cardinals just the fifth team in NFL history to boast three 1,000-yard receivers in a season. Haley joined Ken Whisenhunt s staff in Arizona after serving a three-year stint as Passing Game Coordinator/Wide Receivers coach for Dallas ( ). In 2006, the Cowboys offense ranked fourth in the NFL in passing (239.8 ypg) as QB Tony Romo developed into a Pro Bowl performer in his first year as a starter and Dallas qualified for the postseason. Haley s passing attack helped the Cowboys finish fourth in the league in scoring (26.6 ppg) and second in third-down efficiency at 48.8% in 2006 as Dallas boasted a pair of 1,000-yard pass catchers in WRs Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn. Haley joined the Cowboys after a three-year tour of duty as wide receivers coach for Chicago ( ) under head coach Dick Jauron. In 2001, the Bears went 13-3 and won the NFC Central for the first time since 90 as WR Marty Booker set a single-season franchise record with 100 catches. Under Haley s tutelage a year a later, Booker became just the second player in franchise annals to post back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns. Haley s initial NFL experience came as a member of the N.Y. Jets ( 95-00), where he served as that club s wide receivers coach from In his initial season in that capacity, he helped WR Keyshawn Johnson earn his second straight Pro Bowl berth. WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING... Of course I m a little prejudiced, but I think Kansas City now has a dynamic young tandem of football people in place that are passionate and committed. They will serve the Chiefs organization well. - Bill Parcells Miami Dolphins Executive Vice President of Football Operations This is a tremendous opportunity for Todd and one that I know he is ready for. He was a big part of the offensive success that our team has had over the last two years. Todd is a smart, passionate coach who gets the very best out of players and those attributes will serve him well as a head coach. For us, it is flattering whenever your coaches are sought after and is a byproduct of the success our team has had. I think it speaks to the progress we have made and will continue to make as an organization. Obviously we knew this was a possibility and developed contingency plans. We now begin the process of activating those plans. - Ken Whisenhunt Arizona Cardinals Head Coach One thing Todd has is a passion for winning, a passion for competing. When I say a passion for competing, that s to say you re losing by three touchdowns and there is no quitting with him. He s figuring out how to push the football down the field with a minute to go in the game instead of running the ball and kneeling down on it. He s trying to figure out how to score more points. He has great attention to detail on the offensive side of the football in attacking defenses and recognizing the weakness of a defense. - Keyshawn Johnson Former NFL Wide Receiver and Current ESPN Analyst On ESPN s Pre-Super Bowl Media Call HALEY S FOOTBALL CAREER N.Y. Jets Scouting Assistant ( 95-96) Offensive Assistant/Quality Control ( 97-98) Wide Receivers ( 99-00) Chicago Bears Wide Receivers Dallas Cowboys Passing Game Coordinator/ Wide Receivers Arizona Cardinals Offensive Coordinator 2009 Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach A FOOTBALL FAMILY Owning a distinguished football pedigree, Haley is the son of Dick Haley, a 43-year NFL veteran as a player and personnel executive. The younger Haley spent his formative years in Pittsburgh, immersed in football with his father and the Steelers organization. A former ballboy for the Steelers, Haley spent many summers as a youth at training camp with the club, and frequently watched film alongside his father. In attendance for many of the greatest games in Steelers history, he later served as a member of the Steelers chain gain on gamedays during his teenage years. Haley s father enjoyed stints as the Director of Player Personnel for Pittsburgh ( 71-90) and the N.Y. Jets ( 91-02), a Personnel Consultant for the Jets ( ) and is currently a Player Personnel Analyst for the Miami Dolphins. He was an NFL cornerback from The elder Haley was one of the architects of the great Steelers teams of the 70s. Haley s 74 draft class with Pittsburgh featured four Hall of Famers LB Jack Lambert, C Mike Webster, as well as WRs Lynn Swann and John Stallworth. He also selected Hall of Fame LB Jack Ham in 71 and tabbed Hall of Fame RB Franco Harris in 72, forming the nucleus of a team that would claim four Super Bowl crowns over a six-year span from KANSAS CITY CHIEFS COACHING STAFF Season Coach Position with KC Todd Haley Head Coach st Bob Bicknell Tight Ends rd Ronnie Bradford..... 5 LB DERRICK THOMAS - PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2009 The late LB Derrick Thomas was elected to the Hall of Fame s Class of 2009 on January 31st and will be enshrined in Canton, Ohio on Sunday, August 8th. Thomas became the 10th member of the Chiefs to be enshrined in Canton. He joins fellow linebackers Bobby Bell (Class of 82) and Willie Lanier (Class of 86) in Canton. A nine-time Pro Bowl selection, Thomas holds Kansas City s franchise record and ranks 11th in NFL history with career sacks. The Chiefs first-round selection (fourth overall) in the 89 NFL Draft, Thomas also holds Chiefs records for career safeties (3), forced fumbles (45) and fumble recoveries (19). Only two players in NFL history own more safeties or fumble return TDs (4) than Thomas. He is also sixth in team history with 728 career tackles. Thomas recorded an NFL single-game record 7.0 sacks vs. Seattle (11/11/90). During the 90s, no other NFL player recorded more sacks than Thomas total of 116.5, including a franchise-record 20.0 sacks for the Chiefs in 90. A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame s NFL All-Decade Team of the 90s, Thomas was the cornerstone around whom the Chiefs franchise was rebuilt. During the 90s, the Chiefs constructed a regular season record and led the NFL in turnover differential (+128). In the 17 seasons prior to Thomas arrival in Kansas City, the franchise made just one playoff appearance and enjoyed just four winning seasons. During Thomas 11 seasons with the Chiefs from 89-99, the team earned seven playoff berths, won three AFC West titles and recorded 10 winning seasons. Thomas produced 27 multi-sack games during his NFL tenure. From 92-99, the Chiefs were an astounding 16-1 when Thomas registered 2.0 or more sacks. He was also the key figure in Kansas City s record-setting 95 defensive unit that ranked in the NFL s top five in scoring defense (first), total defense (second), rushing defense (third) and pass defense (fifth) as the Chiefs posted a 13-3 regular season record for the first time in team history. A stalwart in the Kansas City community, Thomas was named the 93 NFL Man of the Year for his philanthropic efforts. Thomas Third and Long Foundation is still active in the Kansas City community, continuing the reading and scholarship programs he began. In June of 2001, the Derrick Thomas Academy, a tuition-free public charter school was launched in Kansas City. The academy is the first-ever public elementary school named after an NFL hero. Thomas was posthumously inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame in He died in his hometown of Miami, Florida on February 8, 2000 after suffering a serious auto accident in Kansas City, Missouri on January 23, THOMAS CAREER STATS Games Tackles Fumbles Sacks INTs Passes QB Played-Started Solos Asst. Total Rec. For. No. Yds No. Yds. Defensed Pressures OTHER HALL OF FAMERS ON THOMAS... Derrick was a player that could dominate a game. His explosive talents were so great that he could dictate to an offense pass and run blocking schemes as well as the plays that were called. He was such an impact player that you always had to know where he was on the field. His career statistics more than speak to his exceptional career as not only as a pass rusher but also as an overall defensive player. - QB John Elway Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2004 THOMAS RECORD-SETTING CAREER 7.0 SACKS NFL Single-Game Record SACKS Chiefs Career Record 45 FORCED FUMBLES Chiefs Career Record 19 FUMBLE RECOVERIES Chiefs Career Record 4 FUMBLE RETURN TDs Only Two NFL Players Have More 3 SAFETIES Only Two NFL Players Own More I do not think I ever feared anyone on the football field, but I came close with Derrick. He made life miserable for anybody who tried to block him. During the years I played against him, I was never more acutely aware of where an individual opponent was on the field than I was with him. Derrick Thomas changed the way the game is played and how other players at his position are now measured. To me, there is a rare group of players who possess both the will and the innate ability to change the course of a game on every defensive snap. Their names are Deacon Jones, Lawrence Taylor, Reggie White and Derrick Thomas. - RB Marcus Allen Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2003 Throughout my professional career I played against many Hall of Famers. Derrick Thomas definitely fits that mold. His quickness, his intensity and his love for the game was matched by only a few players. We actually game planned for #58. I needed to know where he was lined up at all times, as did my offensive line. Not many teams would actually game plan around one player, but the Buffalo Bills certainly did every time we faced him. - QB Jim Kelly Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2002 I played with Derrick both as an opponent and teammate. As an opponent, Derrick was a respected and fierce presence on the football field that demanded constant attention. As a member of the opposing offense, Derrick had to be accounted for at all times. I remember spending countless hours developing game plans to contain him. During his 11-year tenure with the Chiefs, the franchise suffered only one losing season. Derrick was impressive by all measures of the game. - QB Warren Moon Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2006
