LEAD UP ACTIVITIES FOR INDIVIDUAL SKILLS CONTEST SPECIAL OLYMPICS Maureen Wales Adapted Physical Education Teacher Fulton County Schools 1 Warm up suggestions Dances: Hokey Pokey; Chicken Dance; Chicken Fat; YMCA Ball Bounce: Blow up all your therapy balls and all bounce Sittercize CD: Driving the Car; Swimming; Bicycle Ride Step Aerobics and Weight Training Using l or 2 pound weights, perform arm exercises. May need to provide hand over hand assist for those unable to grasp weights Using aerobic steps, step up and down for a song; do weights; step up and down for a song. For students in wheelchairs, move footplates over, place two steps under feet and encourage lifting feet up and down. If need be, may have to do full assist to lift feet up and down. All-turn-it Spinner Using all-turn-it spinner, put students names on the template. With switch, arrow will point to a child s name. That student will perform an exercise from movement card pictures or whatever movement you chose. You could even put an exercise on the alternate spinner and the switch will chose which exercise a particular child will do. For example, Jonny will hit the switch to see what exercise the class will perform. Deck Exercises: Using movement cards, place two piles on the floor. One pile for numbered playing cards, one pile for movement cards. Turn the top card over from each pile. Fix the cards so that the cards are appropriate for each class. For a class in wheelchairs, a skipping movement cards is difficult. Reaching arms over head, bicep curl, swimming arms are examples of exercises appropriate for a class with wheelchairs. Musical Instrument Switch Give everyone a different instrument, play music and then freeze the music. Instrument passes to the right so that everyone gets a chance to play a different instrument until music stops. Music makes a big difference. When working on passing and stop and starting skills, find music that has to do with that particular sport. Sports jams CD s are always great. Movement Make up movements to a song for that particular sport. Take Take me out to the ballgame and come up with some repetitive movements and do that song for the eight weeks. 2 Important Ideas to Remember By using the Special Olympics training program as a guide, activities which were labeled for those with limited athletic ability were modified even further. For our caseloads, knowing the difference between a baseball and a soccer ball is a big deal. By utilizing the activities that are in all their goals, they can learn to identify simple equipment and play very modified sports. The program should last eight weeks. Break up the lessons into two p.e. periods. The first class can be done in stations and the second class as a group. Break up the activities listed and then follow this schedule for eight weeks. The difference you will see after eight weeks is incredible. Follow the eight week training program and then have a banquet at the end showing the video of some of the training. Make certificates or give out participant ribbons from Special Olympics. Invite another school over and have a local competition using your skill stations. Use volunteers. Ask if you can become a job site for the community based instruction program. It s two hours a day for two days. Need equipment the parents are an ideal resource. Lots of people have equipment just lying around and are happy to donate it. Utilize the therapists in your school. Speech therapists as well as assistive technology specialists can assist you in using the correct switches and communication devices. Physical therapists will teach you ways to transfer, move and walk students properly. Occupational therapists will help with sensory and eye-hand coordination. Vision and therapists can help you work with visually impaired students. By working as a team, your students will have every opportunity to participate l00%. 3 1

6/10/2015 Special Olympics Sport Season Model Fall Softball, Bocce, Cycling, Long Distance Running and Walking, Golf, Bowling Winter Basketball, Bowling, Floor Hockey Rhythmic Gymnastics, Ice Skating, Power lifting, Roller skating, Speed Skating Summer Artistic Gymnastics, Soccer, Track and Field, Volleyball, Tennis, Aquatics, Table Tennis, Badminton Local and area events are held prior to the state game competitions. 4 Modified Bocce Bocce is very similar to bowling and it is a lot of fun to play. Goal: The athlete will acquire the basic skills needed to participate successfully in a game of bocce. Bocce Set or eight colored balls two of four colors each and a golf ball. Four students per team. Students in wheelchairs may be mixed with those standing. One student throws the little ball called the jack or the pallina. Each team member has two of the same colored balls. The person who throws the jack gets the first opportunity to throw his/her ball as close to the jack as possible. After the first person, go down the line two times. The object is to see who can be the closest person to the jack. For students in wheelchairs with limited mobility, you can do two things to make this game successful: 1. Hand over hand assist using hand over hand assist, help student throw ball. 2. Modify your bowling ramp line the top of the bowling ramp with cardboard. This enables the bocce player to push the ball down the ramp such as in ramp bowling. Everyone goes to the playing area and decides who is near and who is far and who won. The winner throws the jack. Consult the Special Olympics Bocce Program for the bocce version played in tournaments and dimensions for the bocce court. 5 Pre-Bowling Goal: To identify the bowling ball and bowling pin through eye-hand activities Small bowling ball and small bowling pin Parachute String Bells Bowling pin cutouts Bowling ball cutouts Me and My Beanbag Take that BeanBag song Instead of using a beanbag, use a small bowling pin or a the little black balls that come with the little bowling sets or use black balloons (use whatever you can find that resembles a black bowling ball). Pass bowling ball or bowling pin to music while in a circle. Music: Bean Bag Activities: Who s Got the Bean Bag? Use bowling ball or small bowling pin instead of beanbag. Use bowling ball the first few weeks and then switch to the pin. Throwing All throw beanbags at bowling pins in the center of the circle. Freeze: Play freeze game using cutouts of bowling balls and then bowling pins. Music: Silly Willy Sports Workout CD has Bowling Buddy Rock for music. Reaching: Use little pins and have students knock the pins off their trays. Grasp and Release: Attach a long piece of string to the ceiling with a ball attached at the end and play skittle bowling. Students hold onto string and have to let go for the ball to hit the bowling pin and knock it down. Attach bells to ball for some sensory input. Parachute Activity: Use a small parachute and roll a little bowling ball all over it. When there aren t enough people to hold onto the parachute, attach parachute to the chest strap of students with wheelchairs. They can continue to track the bowling ball as it travels around the chute. Attach bells to the handles of the parachute for some sensory input. Music: -Playtime Parachute Fun Parachute Rollerball. Rolling Activities: 1. Begin rolling while sitting. Use a bigger ball and progress to a smaller ball. 2. Roll to a designated classmate; 3. Roll as a group and try to hit a single bowling pin in the middle. Give a sticker to the person who hits it. 4. Progress to a standing position and all roll. 5. Try utilizing the finger holes and then eventually the pendulum swing. 6. Push wheelchairs up to a table and have the students push the bowling ball across the table to either hit a pin or to roll to a designated classmate. 6 2

Ramp Bowling Goals: Student will push ball down ramp. Goals: Student will pick ball up off floor and put on ramp. Bowling Ramp Switch Activated Bowling Ramp Bowling Ball (with sound in it for students with visual impairment) Reaching: Place bowling ramp in front of student. To encourage reaching, pull the ramp a little bit away from the student. Bend and Pick up: For students who are unable to roll and still need the ramp, place bowling ball on floor or on chair and have student place it on the ramp. This is a functional activity that an athlete could do at the bowling alley when going out for recreation. Communication: If the student is unable to communicate, use the Big Mac and ask him/her if it is his/her turn. Be Creative: Decorate the pins to make the activity a fun one. Buy holiday themed puppets at the Dollar Store and velcro them on. It makes the activity much more fun as you tell them to hit a character rather than a plain bowling pin. Individual Sports Contest Ramp Bowling Unassisted Ramp Bowling: Division 1: Athlete aims ramp into position unassisted. Division 2: Athlete positions ball on the ramp with assistance and pushes ball down ramp towards target. Assistant may guide, align, or direct ramp and athlete but may not support or assist with the ball s forward movement. Other adapted bowling equipment: Adapter-Pusher Device Handlebar Extension Accessory Handle grip bowling ball that snaps back upon release Beeping Device for visually impaired 7 Individual skill LEVEL Bowling Bowling ball with holes Lightweight bowling ball Bowling pins Tape Goal: Athlete will participate in level 1 bowling activities. Target Bowl Target bowl is regulation bowling using a shorter alley 30 feet. Make an alley 3 6 wide. The distance from the foul line to the pins is 30 feet long. When students are ready for Target Bowl, athletes bowl five frames utilizing the standard scoring system. Frame Bowl Set pins up in triangular bowling formation Set the lead pin l6 5: from the rolling line. You can begin a lot closer and move back as the student progresses. Mark the one meter long foul line with tape. Athlete has two rolls per frame to knock down the most number of pins. Pins knocked down will be cleared away between the first and second roll. All pins are re-set for each new frame. Athlete may sit or stand while rolling the ball and must be behind the foul line upon release of the ball. Athlete may use one or two hands to roll the ball. Athlete s score will equal the number of pins knocked down in two frame. Athlete receives five bonus points when all pins are knocked down by the ball on the first roll of a frame and two pins are received when all remaining pins are knocked down on the second roll of the ball in the frame. Adapted Equipment: Ramps Adapter-Pusher Device Handlebar Extension Accessory Handle grip bowling ball that snaps back upon release 8 Pre-Basketball The athlete will identify a basketball. Small basketball Paper basketball cutouts. Orange balloon or balloons that look like basketballs (available at Party City) Big Basketball Basketball Beach Ball String Very small basketballs Regulation basketball Helium Use the little basketballs and play Simon Says, put the basketball on your head, put the basketball on your toe. Find a smaller version of the basketball and play passing game with it. Music Silly Willy Sports CD Basketball Star Freeze: Use paper cutouts of basketballs, play freeze. Music: Hit me with your best shot or The Freeze Game from Wee Sing, Games, Games, Games Throwing: Throw beanbags and knock a basketball out of the hoop or off the chair. Reaching: Using an orange balloon or one that looks like a basketball, play keep it up while all sitting in a circle. Rolling: Using a blown up basketball from S&S catalog, push it and keep it rolling. You can also use a therapy ball but there aren t many orange ones. All could sit on the floor and roll a regular basketball. Students could practice taylor-sitting while doing this activity while working on classmate identification. For example, roll the basketball to Tommy. Tommy roll to Mary. For a communication device, have their picture on a Cheaptalk and then they can push to whom they choose. Bend & pick up/grasp & release : To practice bending and picking up as well as grasping and releasing, put regular size basketballs all over the floor and have everyone pick them up and put them in a container. For fun, you could time them. This is especially fun if you have access to the gym as you can put out lots of basketballs. For those in wheelchairs, put hacky sized basketballs on trays and have them put into a smaller container. Dribbling: Hang a basketball beach ball within students reach to continuously hit. Using helium, attach balloon to a weight and have student hit down on the balloon. It ll come right back up for them to do it continuously. 9 3

Individual skills contest basketball Target Pass to measure an athlete s skill in passing a basketball. 2 basketballs (size of ball depending on ability of class) Tape A l m (3 3 ½ ) square is marked on a wall using chalk or tape.. The bottom line of the square shall be l meter from the floor. A 3m (9 9 ) square will be marked on the floor and 2.4 m (7 ) from the wall. The athlete must stand within the square. The leading wheel axle of an athlete s wheelchair may not pass over the line. The athlete is given five passes to hit target. For scoring, please read the Summer Sports Rules Guide under sports for students with limited athletic ability. Move the square down and the student closer so it is even with the student s reach. Put something within the square on the wall which will make noise when you hit it. For a student with limited arm movement, he/she can try to touch the target. Velcro a big Mac to the wall so that when the person tries to hit it, it will make whatever sound you want. 10 INDIVIDUAL SKILL contest Basketball (cont.) Ten Meter Dribble To measure an athlete s speed and skill in dribbling a basketball 3 basketballs size depending on class ability 4 traffic cones floor tape measuring tape and stopwatch. The athlete begins from behind the start line and between the cones. The athlete starts dribbling and move when the official signals. The athlete dribbles the ball with one hand for the entire l0m. An athlete in a wheelchair must alternate taking 2 pushes followed by two dribbles for legal dribbling. The athlete must cross the finish line between the cones and must pick up the basketball to stop the dribble. If the athlete loses control of the ball, the clock continues to run. The athlete can recover the ball. However, if the ball goes outside the l.5m lane, the athlete can either pick up the nearest back-up basketball or recover the errant ball to continue the event. Smaller balls Shorten the lane For student unable to dribble at all, try throwing it toward the finish line and counting the amount of throws it takes to get to the cone. Try using the palm-sized basketballs for easier grasping and releasing. Make a dribble ramp using PVC pipe. With this, the ramp is parallel to the athlete and he/she just moves the ball along the ramp until he/she gets to the end. 11 Individual Skills Contest Basketball (cont.) Spot Shot to measure an athlete s skill in shooting a basketball 2 basketballs size depends on abilities in class Floor tape Measuring tape Regulation goal with backboard Six spots are marked on the floor. #1 and #2 1.5m to the left and right plus 1m out. #3 and #4 l.5m to the left and right plus l.5m out. #5 and #6 l.5m to the left and right plus 2m out. The athlete attempts two field goals from each of six spots. The attempts are taken at spots #2, #4, #6 and then #l, #3, and #5. Please see summer sports rules book for scoring. Using a shorter adjustable basketball net ( Flaghouse carries this as does Fisher Price & Little Tykes) put spots closer to the net and have student throw ball into net. have student push ball from the lip raise the net up or down depending on height of child or wheelchair raise the net up and make someone really reach up to put the ball in the net for students with very limited mobility, put a floor net on their lap or on the floor and have them throw the palm sized basketballs in it or push the regulation sized basketball in it. 12 4

Pre-Soccer Student will identify the soccer ball.. o Big Soccer Ball o Regular soccer ball o Small soccer ball o Soccer ball cutouts o Blow up soccer ball o String. o Floor hoop o Soccer net o Using a deck of cards and the body ID cards, turn over each card to see how many times the student can touch that body part with their little soccer ball. For example, 4 of spades and ears student touches ear four times with little soccer ball. o Pass soccer ball in a circle regular soccer ball or little soccer balls (in front of, behind, slowly, fast etc) o Music Me and My Bean Bag - Pass the Bean Bag Freeze: o Freeze on soccer ball cutouts. o Music Songs for Little Champions #5Out on the Soccer Field Kicking: o If class is all mobile, kick soccer ball and keep it in circle. o Use really big soccer ball for classes who need it. o Unstrap students feet from foot plates if possible so feet are able to kick. o May need hand over hand assist to help students kick ball. o May have to do this in a line if you don t have enough help. o Music: Songs for Little Champions #4 Kick, kick, kick the Ball Dribbling: o Using blown up soccer ball, hang it low to the ground and let students kick it. o With students in wheelchairs, have blown up soccer ball reach to top of foot so they can try to get it off. Use floor hoop from basketball. o Using little stuffed soccer balls, students can throw to net. Parachute activity A World of Parachute Play La Luna Mezzu o Mari Soccer Ball is on the Chute. o Fun game moving the soccer ball around the parachute. 13 INDIVIDUAL SKILL CONTEST SOCCER Dribbling: o Player dribbles from the starting line to the finish zone, staying inside the marked lane. The finish zone should be marked off with cones as well as chalk. The clock is stopped when both the player and the ball are stopped inside the finish zone. If the player overshoots the finish zone, he/she must dribble it back in to finish. o soccer ball, tape or chalk, 4 large cones to mark the finish zone o o Shorten the distance o Use a bigger ball o Use a ball with a bell in it. o For students in wheelchairs, use the giant soccer ball and kick it to the finish line with someone pushing the wheelchair from behind. If there is some movement in their legs, remove footplates and let legs dangle to kick. Shooting: o Players begins a the start line and walks or runs forward to shoot the ball into the goal from a distance of 6m. The players returns to the line. Ball placer places the next ball to be shot. Player repeats. Total of 5 shots Five soccer balls, tape or chalk, 4mX2m 5-a-side goal with net o Shorten the distance o Use a bigger ball o Use a ball with a bell in it. o For student in wheelchair, kick the giant soccer ball in with whatever prompt (physical, model, verbal etc) he/she needs. Run & Kick: o Player begins at the starting marker. He/she runs to any ball and kicks it through a target gate. He/she is only allowed to kick the ball once. The player then runs and kicks another ball through a target gate. When the player kicks the last ball, the clock is stopped. Four soccer balls. A central starting point should be marked. A 2m wide target gate set up 2m ahead of each ball. o o Widen the targets o Use a bigger ball o Give athlete more chances o Student can walk rather than run. o Don t use timers. o For students in wheelchairs, make really big targets so that the giant soccer ball can fit through. Use half of a hula hoop with bigger cones so it can fit through it. Scoring/Points: See Sports Skills Assessment Tests 14 Pre-Softball Goal to introduce the basic skills needed to play modified softball. Softball Hackney sack sized softballs Maraca Baseball cutouts Bat cutouts Blow up baseball beachball. Paddles Lightweight bat Blow up catcher Beanbag throwing game Using all-turn-it spinner, student touches body part chosen with softball. Music: Songs for Little Champions Take Me Out to the Ballgame. #2 Freeze: Freeze on baseball or bat cutouts. Music: Silly Willy Sports Workout Baseball Play. Bend & Pick up/grasp & Release: Put softballs all over the floor, bend and pick up. Use little softballs if bigger ones are too difficult to grasp For student with limited mobility, have them hold a softball and see how long they can hold it without dropping it. Hitting: Hit hanging suspended blow up baseball or whiffle ball. Use helium tank and blow up white balloon and hit using hands, paddle or small bat. Using tee, a whiffle ball and string, tie whiffle ball to string and tie string to tee. Give the string some length. After the ball is hit, it is easier to pull the whiffle ball back on the tee than run all over the place to get the ball Throwing: Using a target, throw the softball. Use the blow up catcher and have students throw to the net or have students reach to put the softballs in the net. Using the beanbag throwing game, have students put softball in the net

Individual skills level Softball (cont.) Hitting to measure the athlete s ability to hit for distance when hitting off a tee. Batting tee Red stitch restricted flight softballs Bat Measuring tape and chalk Standing in a regulation-sized batter s box (2.31m (7 7 ) by 99 cm (*3 3 ), the athlete is instructed to hit the ball off the tee. The athlete receives three attempts. Modifications Use smaller and/or lighter bat Use hand Use tee with bigger head (Big Bopper Tee) Use bigger ball Base Race to measure the athlete s running or walking ability Three bases, home plate, stopwatch Students take turns going around the bases (65 apart) as fast as they can time speed or watch for foot on base and record. Modifications With students in wheelchairs, teacher or assistants can assist. If student has walking goal using a walker or a trainer, his/her goal could be just making it from home to first base to start. 16 Individual skills Softball (cont.) Throwing to measure the athlete s ability to throw for distance and accuracy. Using softballs, small stuffed baseballs, or whiffleballs, student throw as far as they can overhand using their own level of assist. Distance is measured. Player has 2 trials to throw the softball as far and as straight as possible down the throwing line, without stepping over the restraining line. Modifications Use blow up catcher and have students aim at target. Using beanbag throwing game, have student with limited arm movement grasp and release little balls in the net. Using hand over hand assist, student will throw softball. Fielding to measure athlete s fielding ability. Softballs, fielding gloves, measuring tape, chalk line, cones The athlete will stand between and behind the two cones. The official must throw the ball on the ground to the athlete, between the cones. The throw to the athlete must hit the ground before the 6.l0m (20 ) chalk line. Every athlete gets five fielding attempts per trial. Each athlete receives two trials. For scoring and next level of play, please see the Sports Skills Assessment Test. Student can sit and catch rolled ball. Using tray, students in wheelchairs can catch small baseball rolled on tray. Use a bigger softball Target sells a playground ball that even looks like a softball. 17 Pre-Tennis Goal: To acquire skills necessary to participate in modified tennis activities Materials tennis ball or relaxable yellow balls. floor hoops yellow beach ball lollipop paddles yellow whiffleball plastic tennis racquet baseball tee Pass tennis ball around in a circle or use relaxable yellow smiley balls which are easy to grip. Throwing : Have students throw tennis balls to floor hoop, to a trash can or over a lowered tennis net. Contest: Have students keep the tennis ball on their racket as they hold it still. For a student with limited mobility, see how long he/she can hold it in their hand or on their palm. Bend and Pick up/grasp and release: Have students bend and pick up tennis balls and put them into tennis ball containers. Hitting: Hang yellow whiffleball from ceiling and have students reach to hit it as if they were serving. Could use paddle, racket or just hands for those with reaching and stretching goals. Hit a hanging suspended yellow beachball within the students reach using lightweight racquet, paddle or hand. Game Set up baseball diamond. Each person gets the opportunity to hit the thrown tennis ball and then go to base and stop. Next person etc. until all have gotten through a few times. If need be, person hits and teacher assists around to all the bases and student waits his turn while others do the same thing. Students in wheelchairs can be pushed around the bases. Could use baseball tee to hit off of using the forehand swing. For visually impaired, use bell balls cat toys work great as they have bells in them and they are cheap. 18 6

INDIVIDUAL SKILLS CONTEST TENNIS Racquet Bounce eye-hand coordination. Athlete scores one point for each time he or she uses the racket to bounce the ball on the court. Athlete performs skill for 30 seconds. Using balloon, hit balloon down to hit floor. Use paddle or plastic racket or hand. Ups eye-hand coordination Athlete scores one point for each ball hit into the air from the racket. Athlete performs skills for 30 seconds. Using balloon, hit balloon up in the air with hand, racket, or paddle. Keep it up. Forehand Volley Athlete stands approximately one meter from the net with the feeder on the other side positioned half-way between the service line and the net. The athlete is presented with five attempts to hit a ball safely over the net. The feeder underhand tosses each ball to the athlete s forehand side. Have the feeder throw a beachball or a balloon they travel slowly and give athletes with slow reaction time the time to process the activity. For next level, stand behind student and help them hit a thrown tennis ball. 19 PRE-Table Tennis Goal: To familiarize students with basic concept of table tennis. Ping Pong Balls Whiffle Ball Balloons Pass a ping pong ball. Music: Wee Sing Games, Games, Games Pass the Ball #10 Put the ping pong ball on a body part instead of the beanbag. Music: Bean Bag and & Coordination Skills Bean Bag Rock #3 Grasping and releasing: Put ping pong balls into tennis ball containers or into metal containers to make noise. For students in wheelchairs, they can do this utilizing their tray. For students who need work on bending and picking up, lay them on the floor for student to pick up. Eye-hand: Using a hanging ping pong ball, let students hit it with the paddle. You may have to superglue the ball to the string. Parachute activity: Put ping pong balls all over the parachute and try to get them through the middle or see how long it takes to get them all off the parachute. Hitting: Give everyone a paddle and using a small white balloon, play keep it up in a circle. 20 INDIVIDUAL SKILLS CONTEST TABLE TENNIS Hand Bounce Athlete uses one or both hands to bounce the ball on the table for a period of 30 seconds. The athlete may catch or slap the ball and is awarded one point each time the ball hits his/her hand. If the athlete loses control of the ball, give him or her another ball and continue the count. Modification: Use balloon. Stand behind person in wheelchair and do hand over hand assist to perform the activity. Racket Bounce Athlete scores one point for each time he/she uses the racket to bounce the ball upwards in the air over the course of 30 seconds. If the athlete loses control of the ball, hand him/her another ball and continue count. Modification: Use balloon tie balloon to paddle so it doesn t have to be chased. Forehand volley Athlete stands on his/her side of the table with another player (feeder) on the other side. Using a total of five balls, the feeder tosses each ball to the athlete s forehand side. The athlete scores one point for hitting the ball back to the feeder s side of the table. The ball must hit the table to count as a point. The athlete scores 5 points for hitting into either service box. Modification: Use balloon or whiffle ball. Even if student uses full physical assist, this is a great activity for grasping and reaching. Backhand Volley Same as forehand volley except the feeder sends the ball to the athlete s backhand side. Serve The athlete shall serve five balls from the right side of the table and five balls from the left side. Final score is determined by adding together the scores achieved in each of the five events which comprise the skills contest. Playing the game: Use balloons Play using the width rather than the length and try to keep it up. Tie balloon to string and tie string to net to keep control of balloon. Tie string to whiffle ball and string to net and just have students hit ball back and forth to each other. For students with limited mobility, use hand over hand assist to hold paddle and hit balloon over net. 21 7
