2004 OUTLOOK

COUGAR HISTORY 2003 IN REVIEW WSU OPPONENTS PLAYER PROFILES WSU COACHES 2004 OUTLOOK I m really excited about this team s work ethic, offers WSU Head Football Coach Bill Doba. The way they have responded to being here this summer has been great, as is their attitude and ability to work hard. That s not to say we don t have some concerns. QUARTERBACKS Sophomore Josh Swogger enters fall camp as Washington State s leading candidate to replace second team All-Pac-10 selection Matt Kegel. The Youngstown, Ohio, native is just the second player in program history to be named team captain as an underclassman. Swogger gained valuable experience a year ago, earning time in nine contests while backing up Kegel. His first career touchdown pass came in game 11 of the season against Arizona State. Swogger, who possesses prototype size, a strong arm, and surprising mobility, completed over 50 percent of his passes as a redshirt freshman. Josh has the confidence of his teammates and I think that was made evident by the fact that he was named team captain as a sophomore. He will start as the No. 1 guy in fall, Doba said. Despite Swogger s edge in experience, he will be pushed by redshirt freshman Alex Brink. The Eugene, Ore., native capped a strong spring season by completing 11 of 16 attempts for 151 yards and a touchdown in WSU s annual Crimson & Gray Game. The state of Oregon s all-time leading passer, Brink has a natural feel for the game and a Jason Gesser-like ability to improvise and create. Josh Swogger 38

Alex Brink will get some reps. It will be a battle but we definitely want to name one guy the starter, Doba said. Our thinking is that you have to limit your offense if you are trying to get two quarterbacks ready to play. Gary Rogers, a product of Mukilteo s Kamiak High School, joins the program after throwing for 1,480 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior. Rogers was considered one of the top 30 quarterbacks nationally coming out of the prep ranks. RUNNING BACKS Despite losing second team All-Pac-10 selection Jonathan Smith and third leading rusher Jermaine Green to the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Giants, respectively, there is reason for optimism in the Cougar backfield. While most of that revolves around senior Chris Bruhn, the return of junior Allen Thompson could prove to be a major boost for WSU s running game. Chris Bruhn Bruhn is just the fourth Cougar player to rush for 100 yards or more in his Washington State debut, going for 118 against Idaho last August while coming off the bench against the Vandals. Despite playing most of the season with a hernia, the Woodland, Calif., native finished with 353 yards in a reserve role. Bruhn had a strong showing in the Holiday Bowl victory over Texas, rushing for 46 yards on 10 carries. Thompson began his Washington State career by playing five games to open the season as a true freshman in 2001, including a start at Stanford. He rushed for 161 yards in those games and had a memorable diving touchdown against the Cardinal before being sidelined for the remainder of the year with a high ankle sprain. Since then, Thompson has been reduced to action in just one game due to nagging shoulder injuries. His play during WSU s spring session was encouraging, rushing for 160 yards and a touchdown on 33 carries in scrimmages and the spring game. Redshirt freshman Kevin McCall, senior Lavell Anderson, and junior college transfer Jerome Harrison will provide depth behind Bruhn and Thompson. Harrison was considered one of the top three junior college running backs in the country as a sophomore at Pasadena City College, the same school that produced the departed Smith. We have three solid kids at running back in Bruhn, Thompson, and McCall. We like our depth there, Doba said. Harrison is a lot like Jonathan Smith. He has great quickness and good hands. He could do a lot of things for us and we think he will be a good addition. He could be a nice changeup from Bruhn, who is a big, strong back and Harrison is more of an elusive guy with great lateral movement. WIDE RECEIVERS For the second-straight year, offensive coordinator and receivers coach Mike Levenseller enters the season working with a retooled pass-catching unit. A year ago, the loss of Mike Bush and Jerome Riley was supposed to spell a downturn in production at the position. This season, the Cougars are looking to reload without the services of Devard Darling, Scott Lunde, and Sammy Moore. We have six to eight kids who can be solid receivers at this level. We are young, but we expect them to improve as the season goes on, Doba said. Sophomores Chris Jordan and Jason Hill figure to be a major part of that process. Jordan hauled in 28 passes for 341 yards and two touchdowns during his freshman campaign, while Hill should provide Cougar signal callers with a big, strong downfield threat after serving as a physical special teams performer in Chris Jordan is a very solid, proven receiver, Doba said. Jason Hill is a phenomenal young man who was great for us on special teams last year. Levenseller should also get a lift from junior workhorse Marty Martin, who introduced himself to the Cougar Nation during the spring game, bringing in 10 passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Marty had an excellent spring. I would love to see him have a great season, Doba said. Fellow junior Trandon Harvey, who caught 21 passes for 247 yards a year ago, is also a dangerous target when healthy. Harvey has missed 18 games in his career due to injury. Speedsters Tramaine Murray and Jevon Miller, both redshirt juniors, give the receiving corps an added dose of depth and could double as threats on kick and punt returns OUTLLOK WSU COACHES PLAYER PROFILES WSU OPPONENTS 2003 IN REVIEW COUGAR HISTORY 39

COUGAR HISTORY 2003 IN REVIEW WSU OPPONENTS PLAYER PROFILES WSU COACHES 2004 OUTLOOK Junior college transfer Greg Prator and freshman Michael Bumpus could also be candidates for playing time. Prator was a first team All-Foothill League selection at Chaffey College in California last season after bringing in 49 passes for 899 yards and 12 touchdowns. Bumpus was a multi-purpose performer for Culver City High School in the Golden State, racking up over 1,000 yards receiving as a junior and over 800 yards rushing while playing quarterback as a senior. Greg Prator could really help us. We don t recruit junior college kids to be backups so we expect a lot from him, Doba said. Michael Bumpus has a ton of raw talent that could enable him to play as a true freshman. TIGHT ENDS Position coach Robin Pflugrad returns one of the top tight end combinations in the Pac-10 with junior Troy Bienemann and sophomore Cody Boyd. Bienemann earned second team All-Pac-10 honors after bringing in 29 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns. Boyd was named honorable mention freshman All-America with 18 catches for 230 yards and a score. Troy Bienemann is awesome. He has the ability to be a first team All-Pac-10 tight end, Doba said. The great thing about Cody is that he is fast enough that we can flex him Troy Bienemann out and use him as a receiver. We would like to use him to get mismatches with linebackers playing either one of our receivers or him. Both players are versatile contributors. In addition to being a sure-handed pass catcher, Bienemann serves as a long snapper. At 6-8, 250 pounds, Boyd blocked two field goal attempts in Sophomore Jesse Taylor could be the best blocker among the Cougar tight ends. Freshman Ben Woodard, who returned from a two-year religious mission in January, is a likely redshirt candidate. OFFENSIVE LINE While the rest of the offense will sport a new look in 2004, George Yarno s offensive line unit will look very familiar. The top seven returnees, led by tackle tandem Calvin Armstrong and Sam Lightbody, have combined to play in 136 games with 70 starts. Calvin didn t have the year that he wanted to have last year, but he has really dedicated himself in the weight room, Doba said. Sam has the right mental approach. We want him on defense he is so aggressive. He was named co-captain of the offense and that tells us that the rest of the offense thinks highly of him as well. Armstrong earned first team All-Pac-10 honors in 2002 and honorable mention in He enters his final year on the Palouse with 33 starts under his belt and a spot on the Rotary Lombardi Award watch list. Lightbody will man the right tackle position. The 6-9, 328-pound California native will serve as offensive co-captain along with Swogger. In the middle, versatile junior Nick Mihlhauser will become the full-time center after splitting time at that spot and right guard a year ago. Nick could be one of the best centers we ve had here. He is tough, quick, intelligent, and understands the offense. We put a lot on his shoulders, Doba said. Senior Patrick Afif, junior Riley Fitt-Chappell, and redshirt 40

freshman Bobby Byrd are candidates to fill the guard spots. Fitt-Chappell is the most experienced of the group, seeing action in 24 games with 10 starts over the past two seasons. The sophomore trio of Sean O Connor, Charles Harris, and Spencer Hollison will provide depth along the line. Harris was selected to The Sporting News Pac-10 All-Freshmen team in DEFENSIVE LINE Washington State led the country in takeaways in 2003 with 48. To approach that achievement this fall, four new starters along the defensive line will have to maintain the pressure that departed stalwarts D.D. Acholonu, Isaac Brown, Tai Tupai, and Jeremey Williams applied on opposing quarterbacks. Senior defensive tackle Steve Cook will be the anchor for the revamped line. Cook capped the 2003 season with the best Steve Cook outing of his career, recording six tackles against Texas. The Kirkland, Wash., native has played in 34 games over the past three years. Steve is an instinctive player. He is kind of like a Will Derting on the defensive line. He finds the ball, gets off blocks and makes plays, Doba said. Three underclassmen will vie for playing time alongside Cook. True freshman Ropati Pitoitua, a grayshirt that arrived in Pullman last January, made a strong showing during WSU s spring session. Sophomore Odell Howard, who saw action in five games a year ago, and redshirt freshman Aaron Johnson also figure into the mix. The thing that concerns me the most at that position is that they are young, Doba said. If those guys can stay healthy and continue to improve as the year goes on, I think we will be pretty good. On the ends, Canadian import Adam Braidwood and sophomore Mkristo Bruce established themselves as the starters during the spring. Braidwood, a 6-5, 259-pound junior, started against Arizona in 2003 and has played in 25 games. Bruce is expected to bring a pass rushing presence to the unit after recording a pair of sacks in limited action a year ago. Adam is a guy that is big enough and strong enough to play on the interior if we were to need help there, Doba said. Mkristo plays the game with a lot of passion and brings energy to our defense. Junior Adam West, a converted tight end, gives position coach and defensive coordinator Robb Akey an additional option. Freshmen Matt Mullenix and Reyshawn Bobo will be looking to contribute after redshirting in LINEBACKERS Junior Will Derting will be the focus of opposing offenses this fall in the Cougar linebacking unit, but veteran Pat Bennett and playmaking sophomore Scott Davis could make it difficult to devote full attention to the preseason All-American. A first team All-Pac-10 selection in 2003, Derting racked up 86 tackles, including 12.5 behind the line with 7.5 sacks as a sophomore. The Okanogan, Wash., native will make the switch from outside to middle linebacker this season and was named defensive co-captain by teammates. Will Derting is special. He just finds the football. If you went by the numbers as far as 40 times, height and weight, he probably wouldn t be highly recruited or be looked at as a high draft pick, Doba said. But if you look at the video, he is a Sunday player. He has a great mental attitude and he is a competitor. He competes at practice and he probably competes at the dining hall to see who can eat the fastest. He competes everywhere OUTLLOK WSU COACHES PLAYER PROFILES WSU OPPONENTS 2003 IN REVIEW COUGAR HISTORY 41

COUGAR HISTORY 2003 IN REVIEW WSU OPPONENTS PLAYER PROFILES WSU COACHES 2004 OUTLOOK Will Derting Bennett, a senior from Forks, Wash., has played in 35 games with five starts through the first three seasons of his career. Bennett made the key play in WSU s win over Arizona State in 2003, intercepting an Andrew Walter pass and returning it 39 yards for a touchdown. Pat has been with us for four years and knows his way around the football field. He played as a true freshman and if he can get over the injury bug, will be very solid for us, Doba said. Davis recorded 29 tackles, including four behind the line and a sack playing behind Derting as a freshman. The Kennewick, Wash., native started at Stanford. Scott Davis amazes me. He is very intelligent. He doesn t look like your typical linebacker when he walks in the room. The only thing he does is make plays all over the place and he is an outstanding football player, Doba said. Sophomores Steve Dildine and Brian Hall are versatile backups who saw action in every contest last season. Alex Hamill could be a candidate to play as a true freshman. CORNERBACKS Five Cougar defensive backs have earned a spot on NFL rosters over the past three seasons. The next to do so could be senior cornerback Karl Paymah. The Culver City, Calif., native is the most experienced returnee in the WSU secondary and will be relied on to provide the attitude and the shutdown ability that Marcus Trufant and Jason David have brought to the unit in recent seasons. Karl Paymah has all the size and speed that Marcus Trufant had, Doba said. Whether he has the ability to break on the ball like Marcus did is something that with more experience and practice he may have. He has the ability to be a big-time corner. Paymah has started 16 games and was the team s fifth-leading tackler a year ago with 55. Junior Alex Teems is the projected starter opposite Paymah entering fall camp, but sophomore Don Turner, junior Omowale Dada, and junior college transfer Tyron Brackenridge will push for the job. Karl Paymah 42

Jeremy Bohannon SAFETIES Departed senior safeties Erik Coleman and Virgil Williams, now with the New York Jets and Chicago Bears, respectively, will be replaced by another pair of seniors in Hamza Abdullah and Jeremy Bohannon. Abdullah, who will serve as defensive co-captain, has been a mainstay on WSU s special teams units throughout his career. At 6-3, 210 pounds, Abdullah will help maintain the Cougar s reputation for physical play in the defensive backfield. Bohannon has also been a valuable special teams player, returning blocked punts for touchdowns against Oregon last year and Stanford in The Richland, Wash., native recorded his only career interception against the Ducks at Autzen Stadium in Abdullah is an intelligent player and is becoming an excellent leader. Bohannon can really hit and is quick, Doba said. Husain Abdullah, Hamza s younger brother, and physical sophomore Eric F r a m p t o n will see time behind the senior starters. Junior Aaron Joseph, a contributor in 20 games over the past two seasons, and redshirt freshman Christian Bass will be looking to earn a spot in the rotation. SPECIALISTS Drew Dunning, Washington State s all-time leading scorer, may be gone, but Doba believes there is another special leg in the Cougar special teams unit in junior punter Kyle Basler. We ve got the Bas back. He is the best I ve ever been around. I ve never had a punter named the most valuable defensive player in a bowl game like he was (2003 Holiday Bowl against Texas), that s for sure, Doba said. Basler, a Ray Guy Award candidate, averaged 43.5 yards per punt as a sophomore and dropped 30 of 77 attempts inside the 20. The Elma, Wash., native was credited by Texas coach Mack Brown as the key to WSU s win over the Longhorns in the Holiday Bowl after pinning them inside their own five yard line four times. Junior Graham Siderius will get the first crack at replacing Dunning. Siderius handled kickoff duties in 2003 and has more than enough leg strength to handle the job. Consistency was Siderius Achilles heel during the spring. Incoming freshman Loren Langley of Puyallup will get a look if Siderius falters. Doba would like to see Murray and Miller s sprinter speed become a factor on kickoff and punt returns. Incoming playmakers Bumpus and Harrison are additional options.
