2 FB SEASON REVIEW 2006 Season Review Ducks finish 7-6, make 10th bowl appearance in 12 years The loss of nine starters four to the NFL from Oregon s 10-2 squad in 2005 had many wondering what to expect from the Ducks in 06. If that wasn t enough, a daunting schedule featuring games against nationally ranked Oklahoma, California and national title runner-up USC gave Oregon fans plenty to worry about. An encouraging 4-0 start, which included a triumph over the No. 15 Sooners, gave way to only three more wins in the last nine opportunities as the Ducks fell into a tie for fi fth in the Pac-10 Conference and a crushing Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl showing. Oregon had moments of brilliance on offense and defense to go along with the frustration. The Ducks led the conference in total offense for the fi rst time since records were available in averaging yards per game (9th nationally) - including a league leading yards on the ground (14th nationally) - a fi rst since Defensively, their pass defense has posted better numbers only once in the last 25 years - fi n- ishing 20th in the country (173.5 avg.) and a league best for the second year in a row. On the other hand, 32 turnovers - which resulted in 143 of the opposition s 345 points - was too much to overcome as Oregon fi nished ninth in the Pac-10 in scoring defense (26.5 avg.) and rushing defense (148.6 avg.). Center Enoka Lucas earned fi rst-team all-conference honors, Jonathan Stewart, sophomore offensive lineman Max Unger and defensive back J.D. Nelson earned secondteam acclaim, while wide receivers Jaison Williams and Jordan Kent, guard Palauni Ma Sun and tight end Dante Rosario received honorable mention nods on offense, as did Patrick Chung, linebacker Blair Phillips and Matt Toeaina were among Oregon s defensive honorees. Oregon sophomore running back Jonathan Stewart appeared almost unstoppable at times when healthy, looking every much the equal of Oklahoma s Adrian Peterson in the Sept. 16 meeting. Stewart ran for 144 yards and a 6.3 yards-per-carry average against the Sooners for his second of fi ve efforts over the century mark. He fi nished fi fth in the league in rushing as well as seventh and 19th in the country, respectively, in kickoff returns (28.1) and all-purpose yardage (136.2). Sophomore Jaison Williams dramatic improvement from his freshman year landed him second on the Pac-10 list for receptions per game and 19th nationally (5.67 avg.), and fourth in receiving yards (82.0 avg.). Despite numerous injuries, Oregon s defense shined at times during the 2006 season. A season-ending injury to veteran cornerback Jackie Bates left two redshirt freshmen - Walter Thurmond III and Jairus Byrd - to man the perimeter of the secondary for the Ducks. Byrd was named the conference s Co-Freshman of the Year, while each were named to the Pac-10 honorable mention list. The defense overcame the diffi cult schedule, a host of damaging injuries and a persistent offensive turnover struggle. While Bates appeared in only two games, projected starters Brent Haberly and Cole Linehan each missed seven of the Ducks 13 contests. Clearly Oregon s gaudy offensive and defensive numbers would have translated into more success on the fi eld had it not been for the turnovers. But given the inconsistency of the Ducks quarterbacks, a revamped defensive cast sometimes weekly in part to injuries, and somewhat uncertain special teams, Oregon s 10th post-season invitation in 12 years could be viewed in some circles as amazing in itself. In a rare conference matchup to begin the season, Oregon ran all over Stanford, downing the Cardinal at Autzen Stadium. Stewart led the way with 168 yards on 22 carries and two scores before injuring his ankle in the third quarter. Jeremiah Johnson and quarterback Dennis Dixon also ran for touchdowns en route to 298 total yards and four scores on the ground. Dixon added 236 yards and a touchdown on 21 completions in 30 attempts through the air. After Mark Bradford s touchdown reception midway through the second quarter closed the gap at 17-10, Oregon scored 31 unanswered points to cruise to the victory. Linebacker A.J. Tuitele s 72-yard return of a Stanford Brent Haberly Max Unger blocked fi eld goal in the fourth quarter put a stamp on Oregon s impressive opening game. Oregon place-kicker Paul Martinez played the role of hero in Oregon s victory in another tight battle against the Fresno State Bulldogs. His 4-yard scamper into the endzone after a Brady Leaf pitch on a fake fi eld goal gave the Ducks the eventual seven-point margin of victory with 4:55 left in the game. The play gave Oregon four rushing touchdowns for the second consecutive week. With Stewart out much of the game with the ankle injury, Johnson shouldered the load, carrying the ball 14 times for 74 yards and two scores. Williams recorded his fi rst of fi ve 100-yard receiving games as Dixon threw for 240 yards, completing 23 of 36 attempts. A blocked fi eld goal by Blair Phillips in the fi nal seconds capped a comeback for the ages in Oregon s home win against Oklahoma. The Ducks scored two touchdowns in the fi nal 72 seconds to turn a defi cit into a historic victory. Dixon s 16-yard scramble with just over a minute remaining was followed by a successful onside kick by Luke Bellotti. Three plays later Dixon connected with Brian Paysinger to give Oregon the lead with 46 seconds remaining. Oklahoma wasn t done though, as a returned squib kick to the Ducks 27 yard-line to set up the unsuccessful fi eld goal try. Dixon completed 26 of 41 passes for 341 yards and two touchdowns, leading to a breakout performance for Williams, who caught nine passes for 177 yards and a score. Oregon dismissed thoughts of a letdown against Arizona State as the Ducks rolled over the Sun Devils, 48-13, in Tempe. Oregon s balanced offensive attack and relentless defense never left the game in doubt as two touchdowns by Williams gave the Ducks a 14-0 advantage after the fi rst fi fteen min- 76 University of Oregon Football

3 SEASON REVIEW utes. He caught a season-high 10 passes for 137 yards - including eight of Oregon s fi rst nine completions - in his third consecutive 100-yard receiving game. The Ducks averaged 7.9 yards per rush on 40 carries, totaling 315 yards. Oregon s 574 yards of total offense ranked second in the Pac-10 and fi rst in games featuring Pac-10 opponents. But the story of the game may very well have been the defense, which allowed just three points and caused trouble for Sun Devil quarterback Rudy Carpenter all day. The Ducks held ASU s passing attack to a Pac-10 season low six completions and 33 yards. They allowed no fi rst downs through the air and sacked Carpenter six times, including three by junior college transfer Dexter Manley II. It was the Sun Devils worst home defeat since The 11th-ranked Ducks were unable to carry the momentum into Berkeley for a showdown of Pac-10 leaders as the Golden Bears handed Oregon its fi rst loss, For the fi rst time all season, Oregon s running game was shut down as Cal dominated the Ducks on the ground by a margin. Oregon averaged just 2.4 yards per carry. The Bears Justin Forsett came off the bench to run for 167 yards and Nate Longshore threw for three touchdowns in a game the Ducks never led. Dixon threw for 263 yards and two touchdowns but had three interceptions. Jordan Kent recorded his fi rst career 100-yard game on six catches as he fi nished the contest with 113 yards. The Ducks responded a week later in a solid home victory over UCLA, Against the then-2nd ranked rushing defense in the nation, Oregon fi nished with 256 yards in a balanced rushing attack. Stewart s 121 yards were complemented by 69 yards from Johnson and 66 by Dixon. Dixon also threw for two touchdowns, including a 26- yard strike to Brian Paysinger, who became Oregon s third different receiver in as many weeks to record 100 yards receiving. The Ducks defense held the Bruins backup quarterback Patrick Cowan to just 112 yards and an interception on 16 of 31 passing. Oregon led 21-3 after Paysinger s score in the fi rst quarter and never trailed in the game. Oregon s sixth game in seven years in Pullman resulted in a disappointing loss to Washington State in a game that dealt a blow to Oregon s psyche. The Cougars led the whole way, pulling ahead 27-3 after three quarters before a late Oregon surge cut into the defi cit. Brady Leaf received substantial time at quarterback for the fi rst time all season, replacing Dixon in the third quarter and connecting with Jordan Kent for two fourthquarter scores. He fi nished with a careerhigh 262 yards through the air. Williams 163 receiving yards brought the Ducks streak of 100-yard receivers to six games, the fourth by Williams. Oregon s prolifi c rushing attack Dennis Dixon stalled as Stewart was held to 28 yards on 11 carries. Washington State quarterback Alex Brink was very effective, completing 20 of 23 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns. A rare non-conference match-up in the middle of the season against Portland State got the Ducks back on track as they toppled the Vikings, Filling in for an injured Jonathan Stewart, Jeremiah Johnson ran for 86 yards and a career-best three touchdowns on the day. Oregon s fi ve rushing scores were the most by a Pac-10 school all season. Williams was on the receiving end of eight passes as he surpassed the 100- yard mark for the fi fth time, tying him for the most 100-yard receiving games in Oregon history. The game also marked the seventh consecutive contest that featured a Duck receiver over 100 yards. Oregon s defense stifl ed the Vikings, as the Ducks forced four turnovers, recorded fi ve sacks and intercepted Portland State quarterback Sawyer Smith three times. A.J. Tuitele scored his second defensive touchdown of the season on a 26- yard interception return in the third quarter. Oregon s rushing attack again came to life in a rout of rival Washington at Autzen Stadium. Stewart s 159 yards and two touchdowns led the Ducks running game. Oregon compiled 316 yards on the ground, good for second-most by a Pac-10 team this season and the most by Oregon since The Ducks outran Washington by more than 300 yards, holding them to just 13 yards on the ground. Patrick Chung opened the scoring for the Ducks with a 59- yard punt return for a touchdown on his fi rst career punt return. The Huskies came within three at early in the second half but two rushing scores and a Paul Martinez fi eld goal gave the Ducks the decisive victory. Oregon snapped its streak of 100-yard receivers at seven in the game. The win was Oregon s third in three seasons against the Huskies and assured Oregon its 11th winning season in 12 years under Mike Bellotti. Oregon s last chance at making noise in the Pac-10 race was washed away when it traveled to national-title contending USC and suffered a defeat. Costly turnovers in USC territory helped the Trojans win their 31st consecutive game at the L.A. Coliseum and kept their national championship hopes alive. USC tailback Chauncey Washington rushed for a career-high 119 yards and three touchdowns while the Trojan defense kept Oregon s high-powered offense in check. Oregon never led and scored its only touchdown on a pass from Leaf to Stewart in the fourth quarter. The Ducks intercepted three different Trojan quarterbacks but were never able to muster any signifi cant progress on offense. USC s defense fi nished with nine tackles for losses and four sacks. The Ducks offensive struggles carried over as they were stunned at the hands of the Arizona Wildcats, 37-10, in Autzen Stadium. It was Oregon s fi rst home loss of the season and the fi rst dating back to September 24, 2005 against USC. The Ducks were done in by six turnovers - Dixon was picked off three times before being replaced by Leaf, who was intercepted in his fi rst series. Arizona s Chris Henry rushed for 191 yards and two touchdowns. A blocked Matt Evensen fi eld goal try in the fi nal seconds cemented Oregon State s victory over Oregon in the 110th Civil War. The Ducks came back from a 20-7 halftime defi cit after a pair of missed Martinez fi eld goals to take a lead with just over three minutes to play. However the Beavers marched back down the fi eld and Alexis Serna made his third fi eld goal of the day that put the Beavers on top to stay. He also connected from 49 and 50 on a rainy, slippery day. Leaf started and took every snap in the game for the Ducks, throwing for 274 yards. His lone touchdown to Kent in the fi nal minutes gave the Ducks the lead and put him over the 100-yard mark for the second time for the season. Stewart had Oregon s other three touchdowns, rushing for 94 yards on 17 carries. The Oregon State victory marked the 10th consecutive game won by the home team in the storied rivalry. Oregon dropped its fourth game in a row in a contest that never looked that close after No. 19 BYU scored 17 points in the second quarter on their way to a 30-point victory in the Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl. The Ducks had just 120 yards of offense through three quarters and didn t score until Paysinger caught a 47-yard pass from Dixon with less than 11 minutes left in the game. FB 2007 Media Guide 77

10 GAME SUMMARIES FB Game #1 Sept. 2 OREGON 48 STANFORD 10 Eugene, Ore. (58,450) Autzen Stadium 80 degrees, sunny Jonathan Stewart rushed for 168 yards and two touchdowns in the fi rst three quarters as No. 21 Oregon defeated Stanford in the Pac-10 opener for both schools. Quarterback Dennis Dixon threw for a score and ran for another while completing 21 of 30 passes for 236 yards. Stewart, who fi nished with a season-high 222 all-purpose yards, injured his right ankle late in the third quarter and would not return, but fellow sophomore Jeremiah Johnson took up the slack by adding a then-career best 79 yards on the ground. Stanford quarterback Trent Edwards threw for 224 yards and a touchdown but was sacked twice as the Ducks beat the Cardinal on the ground, 298 yards rushing to 100. Stewart burrowed in from a yard out to provide Oregon with an early 10-3 advantage. Dixon s 15-yard scoring pass to Jaison Williams upped the lead to provide the home team with a commanding halftime advantage with 24 second-quarter points. With the Ducks expanding their margin to midway through the third quarter, Stanford s Aaron Zagory missed a 32-yard fi eld goal attempt that would have narrowed the defi cit before Johnson scored his fi rst touchdown of the year. A blocked Stanford fi eld goal in the fourth quarter resulted in a 72-yard return for a score by A.J. Tuitele to put the game out of reach and provide Oregon with its 10th season-opening victory under head coach Mike Bellotti. Senior linebacker led the defense with eight tackles while junior college transfer Jeremy Gibbs added a pair of tackles for loss, a blocked kick and caused a fumble to his fi ve tackles. The win marked the Ducks fi fth straight against the Cardinal, outscoring them in those contests. The 38-point margin of victory represented Oregon s largest ever against Stanford. With the score tied at late in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs appeared to stop the Ducks on third-and-goal inside the 5-yard line. Holder Brady Leaf took the snap for the apparent fi eld goal try and ran to his left, drawing two defenders before pitching the ball to Martinez on an option play as Martinez stumbled in for the tie-breaking score. Oregon s previous touchdown also was set up by a key play from fi eld goal range. The Bulldogs appeared to seize the momentum when Bear Pascoe blocked Martinez s 36-yard fi eld goal attempt in the third quarter before a Fresno State player tried to recover the football. The ball squirted loose and Matt Toeaina recovered at the 5 for the Ducks. Jeremiah Johnson ran it into the end zone on the next play to give Oregon a edge. Fresno State answered with a 74-yard drive to open the fourth quarter, resulting in a 1-yard score that knotted the score with 10:57 remaining. Johnson ran for 74 yards and two touchdowns and set up two scores with long punt returns as he starred in place of injured starter Jonathan Stewart, who sprained his ankle against Stanford. Jaison Williams caught six passes for 106 yards for his fi rst career 100- yard receiving effort. Fresno State got the sellout crowd into a frenzy after just the fi rst play from scrimmage when Ahijah Lane stripped the ball from receiver Jordan Kent and Dwayne Andrews recovered at the Oregon 45. That set up a 32-yard fi eld goal from Clint Stitser that gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. Following a Stewart touchdown, Johnson s 20-yard punt return set up his own 5-yard TD run late in the fi rst quarter to make it 14-3, and his 27-yard punt return set up a 38-yard fi eld goal by Martinez with 38 second left in the half to make it Oregon Fresno State FS Clint Stitser 32 fi eld goal, 9:47, 1st ORE Jonathan Stewart 3 run (Paul Martinez kick), 6:51, 1st ORE Jeremiah Johnson 5 run (Martinez kick), 1:50, 1st FS Jaron Fairman 4 pass from Tom Brandstater (Stitser kick), 11:00, 2nd ORE Martinez 38 fi eld goal, 00:38, 2nd FS Dwayne Wright 1 run (Stitser kick), 7:46, 3rd ORE Johnson 5 run (Martinez kick), 5:16, 3rd FS Brandstater 1 run (Stitser kick), 10:57, 4th ORE Martinez 4 yd run (Martinez kick), 4:55, 4th RUSHING: (ORE) Johnson 14-74, Dixon 10-32, Vincent 5-25, Finley 1-8, Martinez 1-4, Stewart 1-3. (59,269) Autzen Stadium 62 degrees, partly sunny No. 18 Oregon rallied for two touchdowns in the fi nal 72 seconds and the Ducks blocked a fi eld goal on the fi nal play to seal a wild victory over 15thranked Oklahoma. Trailing late in the fourth quarter, quarterback Dennis Dixon s 16-yard keeper with 1:12 left brought the Ducks within six points and set up the onside kick attempt. Brian Paysinger was credited with recovering the Luke Bellotti kick on Oregon s 48-yard line following a wild scramble with 1:02 to go. Following an Oklahoma pass interference call, Dixon threw a 23-yard TD pass to Paysinger with 46 seconds left to give Oregon the lead in front of the largest crowd in Autzen Stadium history. With no timeouts remaining, a 55-yard kickoff return by the Sooners Reggie Smith set up Garrett Hartley s 44-yard fi eld-goal attempt, which was blocked by Blair Phillips. The Oregon senior linebacker fi nished the game with 14 tackles, followed by A.J. Tuitele s 10 stops. Peterson ran for 145 of his 211 yards in the fourth quarter while Jonathan Stewart rushed 23 times for 144 yards. Stewart scored on a short dash on Oregon s fi rst series before the two sides traded fi eld goals. The Sooners worked their way inside Oregon s 10-yard line on four occasions yet came away with only one touchdown and three fi eld goals. A 48- yard fi eld-goal attempt by Paul Martinez hit the crossbar and bounced good to make it 13-6 at the half. Following a Stewart fumble, Thompson tossed to receiver Malcolm Kelly, who sprinted down the left sideline for what appeared to be a 73-yard touchdown, but after review it was determined that Kelly stepped out at the Oklahoma 47-yard line. (58, 526) Sun Devil Stadium 95 degrees, sunny A pair of Oregon quarterbacks threw for four touchdowns and the 14th-ranked Ducks utilized a balanced offense and a relentless defense to throttle Arizona State for their lone Pac-10 road win of the year. Dennis Dixon threw for 215 yards and three touchdowns, Jonathan Stewart ran for 142 yards and Jaison Williams caught 10 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns. The Ducks registered six sacks and limited Arizona State to 175 yards total offense, including 33 passing yards. Williams sandwiched a pair of Oregon s fi rst two scores around a Terrell Ward interception in the end zone as the defense failed to allow Sun Devils quarterback Rudy Carpenter to get comfortable all afternoon. Dixon jumped out to a fast start, completing eight of 12 passes for 107 yards and two scores in the opening quarter, fi nishing the day with three touchdown tosses and no interceptions. Oregon marched 76 yards on nine plays on its fi rst possession, with Dixon throwing a 13-yard touchdown pass to the Ducks receiving leader. Dixon returned seven minutes later to hit Williams on a 33-yard pass that capped an eight-play, 80-yard march. Williams caught seven passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns in the fi rst 12 minutes of play. The Oregon defense held Arizona State without an offensive touchdown all day and allowed the home team to cross midfi eld only four times on the day. The Ducks capped an 80-yard drive in nine plays on a 3-yard reverse by wide receiver Cameron Colvin and added a 33-yard Paul Martinez fi eld goal as time expired in the fi rst half to grab a 21-point halftime advantage. The kick came after an apparent interception by Arizona State s Josh Barrett was reversed by replay offi cials, giving Oregon the ball on the Sun Devil 17 with fi ve seconds remaining. 12 GAME SUMMARIES FB Game #5 Oct. 7 CALIFORNIA 45 OREGON 24 Berkeley, Calif. (72,516) Memorial Stadium 68 degrees, clear Oregon s ground game was held to only six yards in the second half and it was unable to overcome No. 16 California s 28-3 fi rst-half advantage as it dropped a contest in Berkeley for the second time in as many visits. Dennis Dixon s fi rst pass of the game was intercepted by Brandon Hampton which led to the Golden Bears fi rst touchdown. Big plays proved to be the 11th-ranked Ducks undoing as Jonathan Stewart s second-quarter fumble set the table for Cal s third touchdown 58 seconds later before a DeSean Jackson 65-yard punt return for a score late in the fi rst half provided the hosts with a commanding lead. Oregon s second fake fi eld goal of the year set up its fi rst TD on Stewart s 3-yard plunge 1:04 before halftime. The Pacifi c-10 Conference s rushing leader managed only 25 yards on 18 carries for the Ducks, whose spread offense couldn t fi nd consistent holes in Cal s defense. Dixon, who grew up 15 miles away in San Leandro, was victimized by a trio of interceptions as the Golden Bears converted three of the Ducks four turnovers into 21 points. While both offenses entered the game ranked among the top-10 in the country in total offense and scoring offense, it was Cal that took advantage of its opportunities. Despite only 66 yards of total offense separating the two schools, the Bears capped three of their six fi rst-half offensive drives with touchdown marches under two minutes each. Offensively, Oregon s Jordan Kent enjoyed the fi rst 100-yard receiving effort of his young football career, grabbing six receptions for 113 yards. Pac-10 offensive player of the year Marshawn Lynch sat out the second half with a leg injury but backup Justin Forsett made up for his absence with 163 rushing yards of his own. Oregon defensive backs Patrick Chung and J.D. Nelson, along with linebacker A.J. Quarterback Dennis Dixon turned in his most effi cient game of the year, completing 10 passes for 144 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions as Oregon won its fi fth game in six tries. Brian Paysinger had four catches for a career-high 105 yards but it was Oregon s offensive line that paved the way against a defense which came into the game ranked second in the country against the run while allowing opponents an average of only 50 yards rushing per game. The Bruins struggled to muster a consistent offense under fi rst-time starting quarterback Patrick Cowan, who could lead his team to only 64 yards of total offense in the second half. The Ducks traveled 85 yards in the fi rst three minutes of the game, capping their opening drive with an 11-yard scoring pass from Dixon to tight end Dante Rosario. The score marked the fi rst points of the year UCLA had given up in the fi rst quarter. Yet the hosts refused to stop there, adding a 7-yard Jeremiah Johnson run and a 26-yard Paysinger scoring catch to grab a 20-3 advantage after the opening 15 minutes. Offensively, Oregon operated on all cylinders, turning over the football only once and capitalizing on all four of its opportunities inside the red zone with three touchdowns and a fi eld goal. Its defense was able to apply pressure all afternoon as it fi nished with a pair of quarterback sacks and four additional tackles for loss. 13 GAME SUMMARIES Game #7 Oct. 21 WASHINGTON ST. 34 OREGON 23 Pullman, Wash. (35,117) Martin Stadium 59 degrees, sunny Washington State took advantage of four Oregon turnovers and former Eugene prep Alex Brink completed passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cougars to an upset over No. 16 Oregon. The Ducks were unable to take advantage of one of Brink s few mistakes when a Jairus Byrd interception that halted the host s opening offensive drive was wasted with a missed 51-yard fi eld goal try. A fi rst-quarter Jonathan Stewart fumble led to WSU s fi rst score to start the second quarter while Brink s second scoring pass provided the answer to Oregon s fi eld goal to close the fi rst half. After Washington State capped its opening drive of the third quarter with a touchdown, it returned Dennis Dixon s next pass attempt 24 yards to provide the Cougars with a 27-3 cushion. Dixon fi nished the day passing for 105 and two interceptions after entering the game averaging close to 240 yards through the air. Quarterback Brady Leaf came off the bench late in the third quarter to engineer a pair of touchdown drives after defensive end Darius Sanders pumped new life into Oregon with a 6-yard fumble return for a TD. Leaf fi nished with career-highs in completions, attempts and yards. Running back Jonathan Stewart, who was averaging yards rushing, was held to only 28 on 11 carries as the Ducks could net only 104 yards on the ground. However Stewart did account for 84 yards on three kickoff returns while wide receiver Jaison Williams had his fourth 100-yard receiving day of the year. Defenses dominated a fi rst half that saw sloppy play by both teams. Each lost two fumbles and in one segment in the fi rst quarter, the ball was turned over three times on three consecutive fumbles. The Trojans then took advantage of good fi eld position following a 39-yard punt to drive only 40 yards on their next possession to extend the lead to 28-3 less than four minutes later. Oregon held a 15-yard edge in total offense over the Pac-10 Conference champions and maintained possession of the football more than seven minutes longer, yet was victimized by allowing the hosts an average of 6.2 yards per offensive play. Quarterbacks Dennis Dixon and Brady Leaf combined to complete 30 of 48 passes for 256 yards and one touchdown, but the offense could generate only 64 yards of total offense in the second quarter when USC broke away from a scoreless fi rst period. The Ducks missed some early opportunities to seize a little momentum when Dixon was stopped for no gain on a fourth-and-one situation from USC s 13-yard line. Linebacker Blair Phillips then intercepted a John David Booty pass and returned it 36 yards on the Trojans ensuing possession but Oregon was forced to punt from USC s 37-yard line. (58,029) Autzen Stadium 44 degrees, foggy Chris Henry ran for 191 yards and two touchdowns and also caught a scoring pass to hand the Ducks their lone loss of the year at Autzen Stadium. The storyline proved to be all too familiar as the Wildcats converted six Oregon turnovers into 23 points to defeat the Ducks for the fi rst time in eight meetings as well as the fi rst in Eugene since Only two of the visitor s scoring drives covered more than 43 yards in front of Oregon s 48th consecutive home sellout. The Ducks appeared to be out of sync all afternoon as they fumbled a pair of punt returns, could muster only 68 total yards in the third quarter, twice capped consecutive drives throwing interceptions and were unable to convert fourth downs of four yards or less on three occasions. Sophomore Jeremiah Johnson led his team in rushing for the fourth time on the year with 103 yards and scored Oregon s only touchdown. Arizona, which had come off consecutive upsets over then-no. 8 California and then-no. 25 Washington State, recorded its longest Pac-10 winning streak since The Wildcats played the fi nal 33 minutes without injured quarterback starter Willie Tuitama but still refused to relinquish a second-quarter lead. Reserve signal-caller Adam Austin came off the bench to engineer a trio of fi eld goal drives and Henry closed the third quarter with a 61-yard scoring run. Defensively, the Ducks were led by redshirt freshmen cornerbacks Walter Thurmond and Jairus Byrd, who each were credited with tackles for losses among their 14 and eight tackles, respectively. 16 GAME SUMMARIES FB Game #12 Nov. 2 OREGON STATE 30 OREGON 28 Corvallis, Ore. (58,029) Reser Stadium 52 degrees, rainy Alexis Serna booted a 40-yard fi eld goal with 1:12 left, Ben Siegert blocked Oregon s potential game-winning threepointer less than a minute later and the Beavers extended the home team s hold on the home-fi eld advantage for the 10th year in a row in the 110th edition of the Civil War. The Ducks misfi red on three fi eld goals and one PAT in the two-point loss while Serna was successful on fi eld goals of 49 and 50 yards in addition to his game-winner. Less than two minutes earlier, it was Oregon that appeared to have reason to celebrate as Jordan Kent hauled in a 26-yard pass from Brady Leaf in the end zone before Leaf dodged his way over the goal line for the two-point conversion to provide the Ducks with a brief advantage. But Oregon State marched the ball 58 yards downfi eld in fi ve plays before settling for Serna s winning kick in a driving rain. Key to the Beavers hopes were a pair of Matt Moore-to-Sammy Stroughter pass completions covering 53 yards on the game s fi nal drive. Oregon attempted a comeback of its own, aided by Jonathan Stewart s 48-yard kickoff return. But the Ducks could generate only 16 yards on two completions to set-up Matt Evensen s 44-yard fi eld goal attempt with 20 seconds left that was knocked down by Siegert. Leaf earned his fi rst starting quarterback assignment of his collegiate career and played admirably, responding with career-highs in completions (25), pass attempts (42), passing yards (274) and rushing yards (15). With his team trailing with six minutes remaining in the game, Leaf engineered touchdown drives of 71 and 57 yards. In the fourth quarter, he completed 11 of 17 passes for 124 yards, including fi ve of his last six attempts. Evensen was put into position to win the game after Paul Martinez was unsuccessful on fi eld goals of 35 and 34 yards in addition to having a PAT blocked. Kent fi nished with his second 100-yard receiving effort of the season while Stewart accounted for three touchdowns in one game for the fi rst time as a collegian. Defensively, cornerbacks Walter Thurmond (6) and Jairus Byrd (5) led Oregon in tackles for the second week in a row, while rover Patrick Chung recovered his fi rst fumble of the year. Jonny Harline, voted MVP after the game, caught nine passes for 181 yards and Justin Robinson intercepted two throws for BYU, which shut out the Ducks through three quarters. Oregon lost its fourth in a row and was never close after BYU scored 17 points in the second quarter. The Ducks had just 120 yards of offense through three quarters and didn t score until Brian Paysinger caught a 47- yard pass from Dennis Dixon with 10:27 left in the game. The Ducks added a two-point conversion, but that still only cut the lead to BYU recovered the ensuing onside kick and scored 1:13 later on a 17-yard pass from Beck to Manase Tonga. Beck also ran for a 13-yard score that put BYU ahead 31-0 early in the fourth quarter. The Ducks allowed two sacks on their fi rst series and Brady Leaf and Dixon combined to throw for 166 yards. Both threw an interception and Oregon fi nished with 260 yards of offense and lost its fourth straight bowl game. Beck opened the game slowly, but had four passes in the hands of his receivers that were dropped. Beck started focusing more on Harline and it paid off with a fi eld goal and two touchdowns in the second quarter. They connected on a 41-yard pass in the second quarter that put BYU ahead 17-0, then Brown scored on a 4-yard run just before halftime and BYU led After getting stuck at their own 2 on a punt, Beck completed a 17-yard pass to Harline on fi rst down to get the Cougars out of trouble quickly. BYU drove for Jared McLaughlin s 24-yard fi eld goal that put the Cougars up 3-0, then BYU drove 71 yards on its next possession for another score.
