1 Game Notes Eastern Kentucky university women's basketball GAME 14 QUICK NOTES EKU defeated Eastern Illinois in convincing fashion, 67-51, Saturday afternoon in MBrayer Arena. The Colonels were up 22-4 after one quarter of play and held the Panthers to just 28 percent shooting. EKU leads the all-time series with UT Martin, However, the Colonels dropped the latest matchup, last season at Martin. Bria Bass earned OVC Freshman of the Week after averaging 20.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in the Colonels two games last week. She scored a career-high 25 points against Eastern Illinois and was 5-of-8 from behind the arc. For the fourth time this season, A Queen Hayes was named OVC Newcomer of the Week after posting 23.0 points a contest while grabbing 13.5 rebounds per game. Hayes scored a career-high 26 points in the Colonels loss to Southern Illinois Edwardsville on Jan. 4. Then, In Eastern s win over Eastern Illinois on Jan. 6, the redshirt junior scored 20 points, pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds and dished out five assists. UT Matin recently defeated Murray State, 97-80, on Jan. 6. Kendall Spray leads the way for the Skyhawk s, averaging 17.3 points a night. While UT Martin scores 72.1 points per game, but allows its opponents to score 70.5 points and shoot 45 percent from the field. FIRST-QUARTER SHUTOUT In the first quarter of the Colonels matchup with Ohio Christian, EKU outscored the Trailblazers 18-0 en route to a win. Ohio Christian did not score its first point of the game until the 8:22 mark of the second quarter and did not make its first field goal until 7:56 remained in the second. OCU went 0-for-16 from the field in the first quarter, including 0-for-6 from behind the arc. BOXING OUT As of Jan. 6, EKU has outrebounded its opponents eight of its 13 games this season. TOURCHING THE NATIONS TOP-DEFENSE Coming into their matchup with UNC Greensboro, the Spartans led the country in field goal percentage defense (26 percent). However, the Colonels shot a seasonhigh 48 percent from the floor on their way to a win. DEFENSIVE INTENSITY The Colonels defense was a force against Western Carolina, holding the Catamounts to 36 percent shooting for the game. EFFICIENT FROM THE LINE Against Bowling Green, the Colonels were 9-of-10 from the line, besting any team percentage from last season. Madison Wood was 4-of-4, while A Queen Hayes was 5-of-6. A CINDERELLA STORY Eastern Kentucky became the first No. 7 seed in OVC history to reach the championship game last season. The Colonels have made the championship game each of the last two years for the first time since the and seasons. TIME TO STEP UP The Colonels graduated nine players and their topfour scorers. In total, EKU returns just 16 percent of its scoring from last year. A HOST OF NEW FACES EKU welcomes 12 new players to the roster this season, eight freshman and four transfer juniors. The Colonels return just five players from last year s team, and only two that saw any significant minutes. SISTER/SISTER EKU has two sets of sisters on this year s squad: twins Joya and Jalisa Smith from Paducah, Kentucky and Tae Lour and Ericka Richardson from Nesbit, Mississippi. EXHIBITION RECAP In its only exhibition game, Eastern Kentucky defeated Davis & Elkins, 67-54, on Nov. 5. Despite shooting just 39 percent from the floor, The Colonels won the rebounding category 45-39, 18 of those being on the offensive end. FIRST CAREER DOUBLE-DOUBLE Hayes scored a career-high 26 points and pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds in the Colonels narrow loss to SIUE. CLUTCH FROM THE LINE In the Colonels matchup with Tennessee Tech, Hayes shot a season-best 6-of-7 from the foul line, including two makes down the strech to preserve the EKU victory. She continued the consistancy from the line in the Colonels home loss to SIUE, finishing 6-of-8. DOUBLE-DIGIT POINT STREAK ENDS AT SEVEN To start her EKU career, she scored in double-figures in seven straight games, snapping the streak when she only scored two points against George Mason. SECOND-STRAIGHT NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK A Queen Hayes was named Co-OVC Newcomer of the Week after scoring a game-high 16 points and nine rebounds against Akron, and 10 points against Cincinnati. It marks the secondstraight week she has claimed the award. HAYES LEADS IN SCORING (AGAIN) Reigning OVC Newcomer of the Week A Queen Hayes scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds in the Colonels road loss to Akron. NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK Hayes was named OVC Newcomer of the Week after scoring a career-high 23 points in the Colonels victory over UNC Greensboro and 14 points in the Colonels road win against Western Carolina. The Ole Miss transfer leads EKU in scoring with 16.7 per game. FIRST START AS A COLONEL Hayes earned her first start against Western Carolina on Nov. 15, where she scored 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and dished out a game-high five assists. In 2017, Eastern became the first-ever No. 7 seed to advance to the championship game, knocking off No. 2 Morehead State and No. 3 Southern Illinois Edwardsville along the way. Having lost 13 seniors from the team the past two seasons, Roberts has rebuilt with a talented group of young players. On October 12, 2007, Roberts returned to her alma mater to be inducted into the school s Athletics Hall of Fame. Seven months later, Roberts returned to EKU again, this time for a longer stay. Roberts was selected as the program s eighth head coach on May 29, Now in her 10th season, Roberts is the second winningest coach in program history. Off the court, the team received the President s Volunteer Service Award from the Corporation on National and Community Service for its commitment to serving the Richmond community in As a student-athlete, Roberts led Eastern to its first-ever Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship and first NCAA tournament appearance. She later served two stints as an assistant at her alma mater before spending six seasons as an assistant at East Carolina University. In nine years leading the program, Roberts has coached eight All-OVC selections, seven OVC All-Newcomer Team picks, three all-tournament honorees and one OVC Freshman of the Year. She has also tutored three 1,000-point scorers Marie Carpenter (1,623), Alex Jones (1,290) and Brittany Coles (1,031). Over the past two seasons, Jalen O Bannon develop into one of the top players in program history. She earned first team all-conference honors in and O Bannon scored nearly 1,000 points and grabbed more than 500 rebounds in her two seasons as a Colonel. Under Roberts guidance, EKU won 35 games from 2012 to During the season, Roberts led the Colonels to the semifinals of the OVC Tournament for the first time in nine years. Senior Marie Carpenter averaged 21.1 points-per-game for EKU that season and broke the school record for career three-pointers (202). In , Eastern finished and reached the quarterfinals of the OVC Tournament. The Colonels stellar season was rewarded by an invitation to play in the Women s Basketball Invitational. On March 20, 2013, EKU played at Elon in its first national tournament appearance since winning the OVC and playing the in the NCAA Tournament in Two members of Roberts first full recruiting class, Jones and Coles, graduated the spring of 2013 as two of the most decorated Colonels of all time. Jones finished her EKU career first all-time in rebounds (1,050), tied for first in double-doubles (38) and 14th in points (1,290). Coles, meanwhile, finished 20th in points (1,031), sixth in threepointers (139) and second in blocks (95). In , EKU more than doubled its number of wins from the previous season. Roberts led the Colonels to a 7-win improvement, which tied for the seventh best turnaround in the nation. Eastern finished four spots higher than it was picked in the preseason OVC poll.
