Carolina Carolina Against The SEC North Carolina is facing its second Southeastern Conference team this year after opening the season against LSU in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta. The Tar Heels lost to the Tigers, falling short in the red zone as time expired. Against current members of the SEC, Carolina is The last time Carolina faced an SEC team in a bowl game was 2001 vs. Auburn. The Tar Heels, led by Julius Peppers and game MVP Ronald Curry knocked off the Tigers, This marks the 10th time (out of 28) that Carolina has faced a current member of the SEC in a bowl game. The Tar Heels first bowl game was a loss to Georgia in Carolina has also faced current SEC teams Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi State and Arkansas in the postseason. Turnover Story The Tar Heels have committed 15 turnovers in five losses this year and turned the ball over just six times in their seven wins (three of those six were in the victory at Rutgers). Carolina has forced 18 fumbles, but recovered just five. Meanwhile its opponents have forced 19 and recovered 13. Carolina committed a season-high six turnovers vs. Virginia Tech, including four interceptions and two lost fumbles. One of the interceptions came in the end zone that resulted in a touchback and another at the Virginia Tech 1-yard line, a fumble that rolled out of the end zone for another touchback. Carolina came into the Virginia Tech game ranked 28th in the country with a positive turnover margin. The Tar Heels finished the regular season 53rd overall at 0.0. Carolina did not commit a turnover in two straight games vs. ECU and Clemson. It was the first time since 1996 the Tar Heels played consecutive games without a turnover (since accomplishing that in three straight games against Wake Forest, Maryland and Houston, October 5, 12 and 26, 1996). Carolina has had a positive turnover margin in two of the the previous three seasons under Butch Davis, including three straight. Prior to 2008, Carolina had a negative turnover margin in eight consecutive seasons. Second-Half & Fourth-Quarter Success Carolina s success or failure is directly related to its success in the second half of games this year. In Carolina s seven wins, the Tar Heels are outscoring their opponents, , in the second half. In the five losses, UNC is being outscored The Tar Heels had second-half shutouts vs. LSU (14-0), Virginia (17-0) and William & Mary (14-0). Carolina allowed just three second-half points to both Rutgers and ECU. The five games Carolina has been outscored in the second half this season came against Georgia Tech (13-7), Clemson (13-7), Miami (20-0), Virginia Tech (17-0) and NC State (19-12). Carolina is outscoring its opponents in the fourth quarter. The Tar Heels have not allowed more than seven points to any team this season in the fourth quarter except NC State (12) and Duke (9). The other teams to score on the Tar Heels in the fourth quarter this year are Florida State (7 points), Miami (7), Clemson (6) and Georgia Tech (6). Tar Heels Thin at Tailback North Carolina entered the season seemingly deep at tailback with three seniors, one sophomore and a highly-recruited freshman. However, the Tar Heels have been hit hard by injuries and enter the Music City Bowl with just two proven runners. Here is a list of Carolina s tailback troubles: Johnny White, North Carolina s leading rusher, suffered a season-ending fracture of his clavicle vs. Florida State. At the time, White was second in the ACC in all-purpose yards and third in rushing. He finished the season with 720 rushing yards and seven touchdowns while earning honorable-mention All-ACC honors. Shaun Draughn, the 2009 starter, missed the first game of the year while the University worked with the NCAA to determine his eligibility, then twisted his ankle late in the year against FSU. He played sparingly against Virginia Tech, but has returned to full strength entering the Music City Bowl. He is second on the team with 477 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Freshman Giovani Bernard was expected to play this year, but tore his ACL three days into fall camp and will redshirt. Senior Ryan Houston, the team s leading rusher a year ago, was cleared by the NCAA investigation after five games, but plans to redshirt and return next season as a fifth-year senior. Senior Anthony Elzy began the year as the team s backup fullback, but has become the starting tailback over the last three weeks. Elzy missed the William & Mary game this year due to a shoulder injury. He enters the bowl game after posting 230 rushing yards over the last three weeks (76.7 avg.), including a career-high 118 yards at Duke. Sophomore Hunter Furr entered the season with just six career rushing yards. However, he was Carter s Blocked Kicks Year...Kick, Game Punt vs. JMU Punt at Miami...3 punts vs. Connecticut...FG attempt at Virginia Punt at Rutgers forced in to duty late in the FSU game after injuries to White, Draughn and Elzy. On Carolina s final drive, which ended with a Casey Barth field goal to take the lead, Furr had three carries for a career-high 27 yards. TARHEELBLUE.COM 3
