Coach Robb Akey NEWEST VANDALS DRAW HIGH PRAISE FROM COACHING STAFF Robb Akey and his staff set out with a series of goals when they began recruiting the University of Idaho s 2010 football class. There were specific needs to be filled, size and speed to be added, success to be sustained, and continued development of the sound foundation that has been set. I think we did very well with this class as a unit as a family within our family, said Idaho coach Robb Akey, who inked a record number of Idaho players in a group with a strong Northwest presence. Joining the Vandals in the fall from Idaho are Lewiston High products Spencer Beale (offensive line) and Justin Podrabsky (quarterback), along with Moscow s Jayson Washington (running back) and Payette s Tyler Kuder (defensive tackle). And from nearby Asotin, Wash., comes Jesse Davis, who split time at tight end and defensive end as a high schooler but comes to Idaho as a defensive end. Every coach in the country is excited about who they are signing today, Akey said, and we are for good reason. We re finishing a year of hard work. They re all kids we hold in high regard. They re all kids who will help us continue to build and carry on what we have started here at the University of Idaho. Akey s staff set out to find immediate help for the Vandal offensive line, which returns just one starter left tackle Matt Cleveland. Joining the fray along with a handful of returners who saw action last year are junior college transfers Sam Tupua and Charles Wiley. In the mix for the future are Beale, Kyle Salm, a grayshirt from 2009; Mike Marboe, who graduated early from Wenatchee High School and already is on campus, and Dallas Sandberg and Ben Westrum, who ll join the Vandals in the fall. The best news about the bunch? They average almost 6-4 and slightly more than 310 pounds. In addition to Washington at running back, the Vandals were able to capitalize on Ryan Bass desire to transfer from Arizona State. He ll redshirt after coming to Idaho in August but will have two seasons to play. Also able to figure in in the near future is Calvin Thompson out of Cedar Park, Texas. Podrabsky, a talented three-sport athlete, is the lone quarterback. Building in the receiver ranks comes in the form of junior college transfer Armauni Johnson along with high schoolers Mitchell Crockomo (Alhambra, Calif.) and Demetrius Williams (Sacramento, Calif.). Joining Davis at defensive end is Maxx Forde from Washington s Woodinville High School. The Vandals have found potential tackles in junior college transfers Aaron Strumski and Ben Swarts along with Kuder and Karel Kearney (Austin, Texas) from the high school ranks. Homer Mauga, a junior college transfer who hails from La Mesa, Calif., is the lone linebacker in the class. The secondary has been bolstered by the addition of soon-to-be high school graduate James Randall and junior college transfer Thaad Thompson. Also officially part of the 2010 signing class are Shawn Tucker and Matthew Harvey, both of whom joined the team in August 2009.
