5 QUESTIONS & ANSWERS W/#95 James Cole What s your favorite food? PB & J, I was raised on it, and I would eat it over any meal, any day. What are you most proud of? I m most proud of making it to college. I have a 3.5 GPA, so I made it to college and I m performing well. That means a lot to me. What is something that most people do not know about you? I am a very kind, loving person., but because I don t smile a lot, people think that I am a mean person. When did you start playing football? I was too big to play when i was younger, so I started off being the waterboy, then after that I was the coach. Then once my weight was not a factor, I began playing in the 8th grade. Who is most valuable in your life? My mom is the most special person in my life, because she is the only one I can depend on. What s been your most memorable moment? Being a senior at MSU, and being able to turn around the whole program. It feels like we accomplished something big by being able to show that we can win games and have a positive season. Morgan State Football Game 7 BEARS SELECT 5 TEAM CAPTAINS The following players have been selected as the Bears team captains for the 2009 season: RB Devan James, OG Lawrence Brewer, LB Troy Leftwich, DB Darren McKhan and DL Justin Lawrence. PERFECT RED-ZONE O So far this season, Morgan State is not having too much trouble cashing in when they make it to the red zone. The Bears will enter the Delaware State contest this weekend ranked No. 1 in red zone opportunities as a result of a perfect 6-for-6 slate. The Hornets rank No. 7 in red zone defense (7-11). 3RD DOWN SUCCESS Morgan State followed up a dismal 1-for-11 in 3rd down conversions at Akron by going 2-for-12 against Winston-Salem State, 2-for-13 versus Towson, 1-for-9 at Bethune-Cookman and a season-low 0-for-10 against N.C. A&T. Their current 3rd down conversion (8-71) ranks dead last in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). On the flip side, MSU is 4-for-8 in 4th down conversions (MEAC ranked 4th). The QBs are: Jerrald Robinson (6-3/215/Quartz Hill HS); Jahmeal Quarles-Belt (6-3/205/Fork Union Military Academy); and Delonte Smoke Williams (6-0/180/Friendship Edison HS). BRING BACK THE POINTS In the first three years under Donald Hill-Eley, the Bears averaged 33.3 points per game, by far the most in any three-year stretch in school history. In fact, Hill-coached teams own three of the top five slots in single-season scoring in the modern era of football at Morgan State. MSU Single-Season Scoring Records Year Total Points Average EARLY ACTION GUYS Head coach Donald Hill-Eley has been very pleased by the performance of many of the newcomers to the squad this year. 6 ACTION JACKSON MSU senior Carlton Jackson had an interesting inaugural season as the Bears starting QB. In eight starts, Jackson had completed 58-of-112 passes (51.9 pct.) for 742 yards with five touchdowns and six interceptions. That computed to a pass efficiency rating. He missed the last three games of the 08 season after suffering a shoulder injury in a victory at Florida A&M. Jackson bounced back from a subpar game against Akron by completing 16-of-21 passes for 146 yards and threw two TDs, including the game-winning TD pass in an overtime win against Winston-Salem State. As a result of his performance, Jackson was named as the Classic s Offensive Most Valuable Player. He will enter this week s contest after going 10-of-28 for 150 yards, including a pick and a TD in an ESPNU televised win vs. Howard. JACKSON S PASSING STATISTICS 2008 G A-C-I Pct. 10 MORTON-GREEN DEBUT A SUCCESS Edward Morton-Green, a transfer from Miami-Ohio, began his Bears career with four receptions for 39 yards against Winston-Salem State on Sept. 19th in the New York Urban League Classic in East Rutherford, New Jersey. He currently ranks as MSU s fifth leading receiver (6 rec., 84 yds) and is expected to see an increased role as the season progresses and he improves his understanding of the system. He will be one to watch. JEPHTE GETS FIRST TOUCHDOWN H-Back Jephte Cherenfant became the first Bear player to score a touchdown in Cherenfant, a Miami native and 2009 Preseason All-MEAC selection, caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Carlton Jackson in the 3rd quarter of the Bears overtime win against Winston-Salem State at Giants Stadium in the New York Urban League Whitney Young Classic on Sept. 19th. It marked the second touchdown of his career, his first was a 9-yard TD reception at Norfolk State (Nov. 8, 2008). Jephte has caught six passes for 48 yards (9.6 avg) so far this season. ADAMS A BOOMING SUCCESS Bears coach Donald Hill- Eley feels he may have one of the best punters in the MEAC in redshirt freshman Nicholas Adams. Adams, a Fayetteville N.C. product, is currently averaging 37.8 yards per punt and had a season-high 54 yard boot against Bethune-Cookman. Adams was also instrumental in helping the Bears win the field position battle in his team s win against Howard. He averaged 38.5 yards on a seasonhigh 11 punts with two inside the Bison 20 yard line and as a result he was selected MEAC Special Teams Player of the Week. He ranks No. 5 in the MEAC in punting and in addition to his steady performance, Adams may also be one of the largest punters in the nation by standing 6-foot-2 and weighing in at 245 pounds...he brings back memories of three-time NFL Pro Bowl punter Reggie Roby, who was 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds. SCARLETT A KICKING STARLET Kemar Scarlett has been a highlight for the Bears special teams unit as a result of his field-goalkicking prowess. The junior kicker ranks No. 6 in the MEAC having connected on 3-of-5 field goals, including makes from 41, 42 and hit a season-long 48 yarder at Bethune-Cookman (10/3/09) and earned MEAC Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance against the Wildcats. He is 8-of-9 on PATs. THE ALDERMAN FRED DAVIS MSU s Fred Davis is an experienced and rugged linebacker. Davis made a season-high eight tackles (6 solo) with a tackle for loss and a pass breakup versus Bethune-Cookman (10/3/09). The Alderman is MSU s third leading tackler and is ranked No. 23 in the MEAC with 34 total tackles through six games. Davis played a key role in the Bears win against Howard as he finished the game with three tackles and three pass breakups. He recorded blocked an extra point attempt in the third quarter that ended up being the difference in the win against N.C. A&T. Davis joined the Bears as a transfer from Louisiana-Lafayette in 2007 and had an outstanding prep career at Blanche Ely HS. JACKSON CONTINUES EFFICIENCY Carlton Jackson had another very sharp game for the Bears last Saturday. Jackson completed 10-of-28 passes for a season-high 150 yards in the Bears win versus Howard. Jackson currently ranks No. 5 in the MEAC in pass efficiency ratings (116.0) and ranks No. 8 in pass yardage (118.7/g). It will be critical for the senior to protect the football in order for the Bears to continue winning games. A LEAK IN THE D??? MSU defense s biggest weakness through five games has been against the run. The Bears gave up a season-high 284 yards against the Wildcats, marking the most rushing yards surrendered since Oct. 1, 2005 when Bethune-Cookman racked up 362 yards on 49 carries and pulled out a win in Daytona. MSU s defense went from being ranked No. 1 in rush defense in the MEAC last season, to currently being ranked No. 8 by giving up an average of yards per contest. In the Bears victory over Howard, MSU allowed just 113 yards rushing on 34 attempts (2.0 avg.). Jacqueman had a solid afternnon for the Zips completed 13-of-22 passes for 162 yards and threw three touchdowns during a 41-0 rout of the Bears on Saturday in front of a sellout crowd of 27,881 fans. Jacqueman threw for two touchdowns in the decisive first half, finishing 12 of 21 for 159 yards in the first half with scoring passes of 9 and 16 yards to Deryn Bowser. Akron rolled up 436 total yards, and finished the game with 186 passing yards, the most passing yards given up by Morgan State since surrendering 243 passing yards against Towson on Sept. 6, The Bears couldn t get anything going against Akron s defense, and penalties didn t help. MSU, who ranked 3rd in the MEAC last season (170 avg), finished with 41 rushing yards. MSU used four running backs during the contest, and All-MEAC running back Devan James, who only had one carry in the offseason, was limited to 10 carries for 24 yards. The Zips led 24-0 at halftime, outgained the Bears , and forced two fumbles and collected an interception. The only thing in question after the break was whether or not the Bears could avoid its first shutout since a 32-0 loss against South Carolina State on Nov. 15, MSU was also attempting to spoil the Zips first shutout victory since defeating Ohio 13-0 on Oct. 3, Bowser scored his third touchdown of the day on a fade route midway through the third quarter. Carlton Jackson was 10-of -19 for 87 yards for Morgan State, but threw two interceptions. Jackson s first interception helped set up the Zips first scoring drive of the contest in the first quarter. Akron followed that up by opening the second quarter with a score when Jacqueman completed a 16 yard touchdown pass to Bowser. Alex Allen capped an 8-play, 53 yard drive with a 1-yard run off tackle (9:37) and Branko Rogivic hit a 31-yard field goal to end first half scoring. Jackson was intercepted by middle linebacker Brian Wagner, who avoided a couple of tackles and raced 32-yards down the sideline for a touchdown. Vann s two punt returns for touchdown, his fourth and fifth career returns for a score, marked the first time in the history of the Florida A&M University football program that a Rattler player had managed that feat. The two punt returns for touchdown were part of a record-setting special teams evening for Vann who amassed 228 total return yards and a pair of touchdowns in the FAMU victory. Aside from Vann s two returns for scores the Rams and Rattlers were nearly even for the remainder of the contest as WSSU showed considerable improvement as they recorded 218 total offensive yards including 129 yards passing from redshirt quarterback Branden Williams who appeared in only his second career game. The Rams, a team that tallied only 90 yards of total offense in their first game of the season, stayed even with the high powered Rattlers, a team that was picked to finish second in the ultra-competitive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Rattlers struck first as Kevin Elliott pulled in a four yard Curtis Pulley pass at the 8:22 mark of the first quarter that capped a 13-play, 74-yard drive as Florida A&M pulled out to a 7-0 lead, a lead which they would never relinquish. The Rams responded with a drive of their own but were held to a field goal as WSSU settled for only three points following a 5:03 drive that marched 78 yards in 12 plays as the Rams cut the deficit to only four points with 3:19 to play in the contest s opening quarter. WSSU would get no closer than four points for the remainder of the evening as Vann recorded the Rattlers next two scores to put the game out of reach. 17 GAME 2 MORGAN STATE VS. WINSTON-SALEM STATE SEPT. 19, 2009 The Last Game MORGAN STATE 16 OT WINSTON-SALEM 10 Sept. 19, 2009 E. Rutherford, N.J. (25,604) Giants Stadium 73 degrees, Clear Skies EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The Morgan State Bears came out on top in overtime in an epic defensive battle against Winston-Salem State during the 38th Annual Whitney Young Classic on on Saturday afternoon at Giants Stadium. The last time the Bears had collected a win in the Classic was decades ago during the very first one, back in 1968, when they beat Grambling State 9-7 at New York Yankee Stadium. Senior quarterback Carlton Jackson was selected as the Classic s Offensive MVP, while middle linebacker George Howard earned the Defensive MVP award. Jackson completed 16-of-21 passes for 146 yards and threw two touchdowns. Jackson connected with senior wideout Edwin Baptiste five times on the day for a total of 70 yards, including a 15 yard acrobatic touchdown reception in overtime that proved to be the difference in the ballgame. WSSU held a 3-0 advantage in the first half, but the Bears came out in the second half with much more energy. On the first possession of the 3rd quarter, Jackson led the Bears on a 7 play, 45 yard drive, capped by a touchdown pass to junior h-back Jephte Cherenfant who ended up making an impressive diving catch in the endzone. The Rams responded when Austin Higgins was on the receiving end of a Jarrett Dunston 18 yard touchdown pass to help give WSSU a 10-7 lead midway through the 3rd quarter. MSU junior kicker Kemar Scarlett made a 42-yard field goal to knot the game at 10 apiece with 6:38 left in regulation and help send the game into its eventual overtime. The Bears scored on the second play in overtime and shutdown the Rams offense on the ensuing possession. With the win MSU improved to 1-1 overall and 2-1 in the series against the Rams, while WSSU dropped to 0-3 for the season. WSSU s offense was led by Dunston who finished the game by completing 5-of-22 passes for 71 yards and a touchdown, and he also had 13 carries for 53 yards. David Ahola paced the Rams ground attack with 64 yards on 15 attempts. Howard s presence was seen and felt just about every time the Bears were on defense. The senior recorded a career-high 17 tackles and had a sack. All-MEAC defensive lineman Justin Lawrence led the front line while collecting nine tackles, a sack, QB hurry and a pass break up. Defensive backs Jody Ellis and Gary Albury made plays all over the field the entire game. 18 GAME 3 MORGAN STATE VS. TOWSON SEPT. 26, 2009 The Last Game MORGAN STATE 12 TOWSON 9 Sept. 26, 2009 Baltimore, Md. (4,307) Hughes Stadium 63 degrees, Rainy BALTIMORE, Md. The points were tough to come by for the Bears, but even tougher to come by for Towson in the 22nd meeting of their bitter intracity rivalry. But this time Morgan came out on the winning end, as a result of a bend-but-don t break defense and a couple of big plays on special teams on a rainy Saturday evening at Hughes Stadium. Carlton Jackson engineered a 12-play, 86 yard drive that culminated with a 26-yard touchdown pass to Lamont Bryant in the second quarter to put the Bears ahead and the defense kept turning the Tigers back for a 12-9 victory. Jackson, who finished 13-of-20 for 124 yards and a touchdown, had an efficient game. MSU (2-1, 0-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) forced three turnovers by Towson (1-2), two of which were drive killing interceptions in the fourth quarter. Towson s first turnover was when freshman quarterback Peter Athens hooked-up with wideout David Newsom for a 53-yard pass. Newsom was stripped by Richard Wilson at the 1-yardline and Towson s Tony Zaccarelli recovered it in the endzone for a touchdown. But instead of the momentum shifting to the Tigers following the score, the Bears regained it on the ensuing point after attempt, when James Cole burst through the middle of the line and blocked the kick. The ball was scooped up by All-MEAC cornerback Darren McKhan who raced 102 yards to help Morgan trim the lead to 6-2 with 9:06 remaining in the first quarter. Kemar Scarlett hit a 41-yard field in the second quarter put the Bears ahead 12-6 at the break and Towson s Jon Boyer recorded a 35-yard field goal midway through the 3rd quarter to cap all scoring for the rest of the game. Towson accounted for 344 yards of total offense, including 196 yards on the ground, while the Bears finished with 161 yards and was limited to 33 rushing yards. Tremayne Dameron paced the Tigers with 126 yards on 28 carries, while Athens completed 11-of-23 passes for 148 yards, including two interceptions. Despite the yardage advantage, the Bears never allowed Towson to capitalize when it really counted. The Bears defense was led by senior linebacker George Howard, the reigning MEAC Defensive Player of the Week, who followed up a 17 tackle performance last week, with a career-high 18 stops (9 solo) against the Tigers. Morgan State had its best scoring output of the season and the defense held when it counted most to help the Bears improve to a three-game winning streak and extend Bethune- Cookman s rough season with a win Saturday at Daytona Municipal Stadium. The Bears captured its first conference win of the season, and hold a 3-1 overall record for the first time since MSU held a 17-7 lead at the break, but the Wildcats came out with renewed energy in the second half. Kory Kowalski s point extra attempt was blocked by defensive tackle James Cole. It was senior s second extra point block of the season. The Bears quickly countered on its next possession. Carlton Jackson guided the Bears 60 yards in six plays and connected with junior wideout Edwin Baptiste for a 19 yard touchdown pass to lift the Bears to a advantage. MSU s defense pitched shutout in the fourth quarter and was led by senior linebacker George Howard. 20 GAME 5 MORGAN STATE VS. N.C A&T OCT. 10, 2009 The Last Game MORGAN STATE 7 N.C. A&T 6 Oct. 10, 2009 Baltimore, Md. (12,045) Hughes Stadium 65 degrees, Partly cloudy BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Morgan State Bears got away with a lot today against the North Carolina A&T Aggies during homecoming at Hughes Stadium. The Bears survived four turnovers, an Aggie kickoff returned 104 yards for a touchdown that was called back for a block in the back, five Aggie possessions starting inside Bear territory and three FGs missed in a 7-6 victory over the Aggies. The defense and special teams of Morgan State saved the game for them this afternoon. Morgan State stopped the Aggies on fourth down five times in the game. Two of those times occured on missed field goals of 32 and 38 yards by Aggie kicker Patrick Courtney. The only scoring for Morgan State occurred with 24 seconds left in the first quarter when running back Devan James scampered seven yards into the end zone. The drive lasted five plays for 80 yards and was really the only positive thing on offense for Morgan State (4-1, 2-0 MEAC). James said about that play, It was all on the offensive line and I just hit it. North Carolina A&T couldn t catch a break at any point of the game. One example took place in the third quarter where they recovered a punt that touched the hip of McKhan. Justin Ferrell recovered the ball at the MSU 11 with eight minutes left. Two plays later, Tony Coles bulled into the end zone from a yard out to cut the Aggie deficit to 7-6. However, the extra point was blocked by linebacker Fred Davis. On the Aggies next possession, McKhan quickly made up for his error when he intercepted Fears throw at the Morgan State nine on a fourth down and 27 play 8:51 remaining in the fourth quarter. Morgan State was held to only six first downs the whole game compared to 16 for North Carolina A&T (3-3, 1-2 MEAC). Aggie quarterback Carlton Fears was a handful early on for MSU; however, the Bears made some adjustments late and contained Fears late in the game. NEXT UP: HOWARD BISON HAMPTON, Va. HAMPTON, VA. - Hampton University erupted for 23 second quarter points and went on to cruise to an easy 37-0 win over Howard University in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at Armstrong Stadium. The win extended the Pirates streak to 13 straight against the Bison and it snapped Howard s twogame win streak. Neither team was able to generate much offense early until Hampton (3-2, 2-1 in the MEAC) put together an 11-play, 76 yard drive that was culminated on a Herbert Bynes 25-yard strike to Loren Patterson on fourth down. That score came just before the end of the first quarter and set the tone for what was to come. The Pirates used that as momentum to break the game open, taking advantage of Howard miscues and scoring the 23 points in a dizzying six-minute span HOWARD SCHEDULE S12 at Rutgers L, 7-45 S17 at Florida A&M L, S26 at Georgetown W, O3 WINSTON-SALEM STATE W, 7-3 O10 at Hampton L, 0-37 O15 at Morgan State (ESPNU) L, 7-14 O24 NORTH CAROLINA A&T 1 p.m. O31 at Norfolk State 1 p.m. N7 SOUTH CAROLINA STATE 1 p.m. N14 BETHUNE-COOKMAN 1 p.m. N21 at Delaware State 1 p.m. Home game in ALL CAPS The first came on a Lamarcus Coker 4-yard run that was set up on a 66-yard pass play from Bynes to Damon McDaniel. But the defense held and forced a 27-yard field goal by Jordan Stovall that extended the lead to 16-0 at the 9:00 mark Hampton was at it again less than a minute later when Howard fumbled and gave the Pirates a short field. It took Hampton just one play, a 22-yard connection from Bynes to Reginald Hicks to make it Hampton closed out the half on Bynes third TD pass of the game, this time to Isaiah Thomas from 50 yards. Howard (2-3 overall, 0-2 in the MEAC) was able to put together its best drive of the game late in the third quarter but it was aborted when a Floyd Haigler pass was picked off in the end zone to stop the drive. The game was marred by some ugly play from the Pirates who committed a whopping 23 penalties for 170 yards. Coker finished with a game-high 125 yards on 21 carries and two TDs while Bynes completed 8 of 16 for 204 yards and three TDs. Morgan State N.C. 21 GAME 6 MORGAN STATE VS. HOWARD OCT. 15, 2009 The Last Game MORGAN STATE 14 HOWARD 7 Oct. 15, 2009 Baltimore, Md. (3,214) Hughes Stadium 43 degrees, Rain BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Morgan State Bears came into Hughes Stadium playing the last of a two game, five day stint. The Bears already dodged many bullets against North Carolina A&T in their homecoming victory. Last night in front of an ESPNU audience, Morgan State put its defense on display for the country as the Bears knocked off Howard 14-7 for their second win in five days. This was the fourth time in five games that the Bears allowed 10 points or less to their opponent. The first scoring opportunity for Morgan State (5-1, 3-0 MEAC) came off what was supposed to be a play call to surprise the Bears. However, the Bears defense wasn t too surprised with Howard s fake punt call deep inside their own territory as they stopped Robert Parker III after a three yard run on fourth down and seven in the first quarter. Two plays later, MSU quarterback Carlton Jackson threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Edwin Baptiste to help the Bears jump on top 7-0 with 4:10 left in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Jackson hooked up with sophomore Lamont Bryant for a five yard touchdown pass with 9.5 seconds left. The extra point by Kemar Scarlett gave Morgan State a 14-0 lead. In the third quarter, Jackson s pass attempt was intercepted by Howard s Keith Pough, who ran the ball inside the MSU five yard line for what was a costly turnover at the time. Two plays later, Howard senior quarterback Floyd Haigler connected with Phillip Doakes for a three yard touchdown pass with 6:29 remaining. That helped cut the Bears lead to The play of this heavily defensive game which featured 23 punts between both teams happened late in the fourth quarter. This was after MSU freshman punter Nicholas Adams fumbled a snap during a punt opportunity in which Howard (2-4, 0-3 MEAC) recovered the ball at the MSU 48. A few plays later, Howard moved the ball to the MSU 21 when Haigler s pass attempt was intercepted by junior defensive back Richard Wilson with 4.5 seconds left in the game. The Wolverines (5-2) set team marks with 442 yards in the first half and 727 total. They matched a school record with a 28-point first quarter and led 49-3 with their second-highest score by halftime. Michigan won Saturday by 57 points, tying for the second-biggest margin of victory for the Wolverines since 1950, and tying for the eighthlargest margin of victory in school history. The Hornets (1-4) didn t come close to repeating Appalachian State s upset in 2007 at the Big House, but the 2009 DELAWARE STATE SCHEDULE S5 at Florida A&M L, S19 at Delaware L, S26 at Hampton W, 21-6 O10 BETHUNE-COOKMAN L, 7-9 O17 at Michigan L, 6-63 O24 MORGAN STATE 1:00 p.m. O31 at South Carolina State 1:30 p.m. N7 at Winston-Salem State 1:00 p.m. N14 NORFOLK STATE 1:00 p.m. N21 HOWARD 1:00 p.m. Home game in ALL CAPS second-tier program got paid $550,000 to forfeit a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game to give Michigan a tuneup. Quarterback Tate Forcier started, a week after having a concussion, and led the Wolverines to a TD on his only drive and left the game healthy. Denard Robinson threw two touchdown passes on just four attempts and fumbled. Michigan also used its third-, fourth- and fifth-string quarterbacks. Forcier played after being listed as questionable, but was only on the field for one drive. He completed both his passes for 39 yards. Michigan didn t ask any of its QBs to throw more than nine passes, choosing to hand the ball off early and often, perhaps to avoid making the score even more lopsided against the overmatched Football Championship Subdivision team. The Wolverines rested their top two running backs -- Carlos Brown because of a concussion and Brandon Minor who has an ankle injury -- and some inexperienced players took advantage. Vincent Smith ran for a career-high 166 yards and a touchdown. Michael Cox had 82 yards rushing and two scores. Michael Shaw ran for 73 yards and a TD.
