Kermit Blount enters his 17th season as Winston-Salem State s head football coach. Blount has established himself as one of the premiere coaches not only in Division II, but in all of college football. He has led the Rams to back-to-back CIAA Championships in 1999 and 2000, and has been honored as the 1999 and 2000 CIAA Coach of the Year, DC Pigskin Coach of the Year and 100% Wrong Club Coach of the Year. Coach Blount began his coaching career at Armstrong Kennedy High School in Richmond, Virginia as a quarterback coach and assistant offensive coordinator. MSU s defense will attempt to slow down a very balanced Rams offense currently averaging 154 total yards in its first two outings. WSSU is averaging 96 passing yards and 58 yards on the ground. MSU s offense will need to account for sophomore defensive lineman Akeem Ward. Ward (6-4, 260) has led the Rams with 17 tackles (12 solo) with two tackles for loss and a sack thru two games. Last Thursday night against Florida A&M, the Holly Springs (NC) product finished with a game-high nine tackles with a forced fumble and a sack. He was one of only nine WSSU players to start every contest last season. WSSU was held to just 90 yards of total offense against Florida A&M, including 33 yards rushing. The Rams were held scoreless throughout the second half of the game. Last season Blount became the Rams all-time winningest coach in school history (he currently holds a record). WSSU QB Jarrett Dunston was sidelined due to injury, giving opportunity for red-shirt freshman Braden Williams in the Florida A&M game. Williams completed 4-of-13 passes for 42 yards. The Rams pass attack will be pitted against one of the best pass rushes in the FCS. The Bears concluded the 2008 season ranked 1st in the nation in tackles for loss (113) and ranked 3rd in the MEAC in sacks (32). The loss against Florida A&M extended the Rams losing streak to 4-games.The last time WSSU was in the win column was on Nov. 8, 2008 when they defeated the Delaware State Hornets in Dover Bears Football Let s Get Down To Business page 2 ONE TO WATCH Junior cornerback Darren McKhan has been one of the standouts on the defensive side of the ball. The 6-0, 190-pound Miami native and 2008 All-MEAC First team selection helped lead a secondary that ranked No. 2 in the FCS in pass defense in 08 and he will continue to be one of the top secondary units in the nation. McKhan finished the 08 season with 17 tackles, 11 pass breakups and a teamhigh four interceptions. 5 QUESTIONS & ANSWERS W/#36 Justin Lawrence What is your pregame routine? My pre-game routine is nothing special. I like to relax and listen to slow music to calm myself down, then I listen to Phil Collins song I Can Feel It. How big of advantage does your size give you when facing opposing lineman? I wouldn t say it s my size, I would say it s more of my quickness. People underestimate how fast I can come off the ball and bend the corner. What is something your fans wouldn t know about you? I hate spiders. I m an arachnophobia! 5. How old were you when you started playing football? And what was your best play in little league? I ve been playing every since you were allowed to. So I think it was like 5 or 6 maybe. I m from the country, so it didn t matter to me. My best play was a 70 touchdown run, it was crazy! I wore number 36 in little league, and from that point I was called The Baby Bus. 6. What is your favorite football movie of all time? My favorite football movie of all is of course Any Given Sunday. But you can t forget about Necessary Roughness, Rudy, and Little Giants. Senior DL Justin Lawrence returns as the Bears team captain and led the MEAC in tackles for loss in (All-Pro Photo) Morgan State Football Game 2 BEARS SELECT 5 TEAM CAPTAINS The following players have been selected as the Bears team captains for the 2009 season: RB Devan James, OG Lawrence Brewer, LB Troy Leftwich, DB Darren McKhan and DL Justin Lawrence. RED-ZONE O Morgan State didn t have much trouble moving the ball into scoring position in 2008, but they did had problems with cashing in on the scoreboard. The Bears ranked dead last in the MEAC standings. The Bears scored 22-of-36 times (61.1%) inside the 20. The Bears will enter the Winston-Salem State contest this weekend fresh off being shutout at Akron RD DOWN SUCCESS Morgan State finished a dismal 1-for-11 in 3rd down conversions at Akron last Saturday. In 2008, the Bears ranked 7th in the MEAC by converting 52-of-166 (.313) 3rd downs opportunities. MSU was also 11-for-22 (.500) in 4th down situations last season. LAUNDRY SERVICE Last season, MSU averaged just over seven penalties for 65.3 yards, and ranked as the 5th least penalized team in the league. It was a much-needed improvement compared to the 2007 season in which the Bears were one of the most flagged teams in the country. The Bears shot themselves in the foot several times in the season-opener as they were flagged 11 times for 66 yards, while the Akron Zips finished the game with one flag for minus 5 yards. BRING BACK THE POINTS In the first three years under Donald Hill-Eley, the Bears averaged 33.3 points per game, by far the most in any three-year stretch in school history. In fact, Hill-coached teams own three of the top five slots in single-season scoring in the modern era of football at Morgan State. MSU Single-Season Scoring Records Year Total Points Average The Bears will look to put up more points than they did in 08, when they ranked 6th in the MEAC by producing 20.0 points per game. LIMITED AIR SPACE Last year the Bears secondary ranked first in the FCS against the pass and returns experienced All-MEAC DB Darren McKhan, along with senior free saftey Gary Albury and junior strong saftey Jody Ellis. They will be joined by cornerback Kendell Jamison, strong safety Rodney Hildenbrandt and New Mexico State transfer Jerry Jones. The Bears ranked tied for seventh in the nation (FCS) in interceptions with 19 and led the MEAC in pass efficiency defense (68.8). The QBs are: Jerrald Robinson (6-3/215/Quartz Hill HS); Jahmeal Quarles-Belt (6-3/205/Fork Union Military Academy); and Delonte Smoke Williams (6-0/180/Friendship Edison HS). EARLY ACTION GUYS Head coach Donald Hill-Eley has been very pleased by the performance of many of the newcomers to the squad this year. The Bears played 11 newcomers in 2009 including true freshmen Donovan Dickerson (QB), Ronnie Wilson (OG Florida transfer), Justin Young (DE Virginia Tech transfer), Allen Singletary (RB Lacawanna CC transfer), Jerry Jones (DB New Mexico State transfer), Trey Charles, Nicolas Adams (P), Kemar Scarlett (PK), Zary Stewart (DE), Brian Saunders, and Chris Eugene (DE) Bears Football Let s Get Down To Business page 5

6 Morgan State Football Game2 QB FACTOR MSU senior Carlton Jackson had an interesting inaugural season as the Bears starting QB. In eight starts, Jackson had completed 58- of-112 passes (51.9 pct.) for 742 yards with five touchdowns and six interceptions. That computed to a pass efficiency rating. He missed the last three games of the 08 season after suffering a shoulder injury in a victory at Florida A&M. Jackson will attempt to bounce back from last week s game at Akron, where he completed 10-of-19 passes for 87 yards and threw two interceptions, one returned for a touchdown. J.R. LAWRENCE Senior defensive end Justin J.R. Lawrence enters the 2009 season as a CDS Preseason All-American and he was a 2008 All-MEAC First Team selection. Lawrence is a dangerous pass rusher who had 47 tackles (26 solo) and a league-high 17 tackles for loss with eight sacks in Opposing offenses will be keeping close tabs on him this season, as well as NFL scouts who think he may be a diamond-in-the-rough...like his former teammate NT Lonnie Harvey who enters his first season as a member of the Carolina Panthers. Lawrence led the Bears with 8 tackles (7 solo) and had a pass breakup against Akron last week. HITMAN HOWARD Senior linebacker George Howard is one of the top returning tacklers in the MEAC. He totaled 64 stops last season and was selected to the 2009 Preseason All-MEAC Second-Team. The Virginia native played a significant role as a linebacker last season and posted 10.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and recorded an interception return against North Carolina Central (9/13/08). 14 GAME 1 MORGAN STATE VS. AKRON SEPT. 12, 2009 The Last Game MORGAN STATE 0 AKRON 41 Sept. 12, 2009 Akron, Ohio (11,198) InfoCision Stadium 68 degrees, Partly Cloudy AKRON, Ohio --Chris Jacqueman passed for 162 yards, Deryn Bowser had eight receptions for 86 yards and the Akron Zips earned its first win of the season on the opening day of InfoCision Stadium, its brand new $61 million dollar stadium. Jacqueman had a solid afternnon for the Zips completed 13-of-22 passes for 162 yards and threw three touchdowns during a 41-0 rout of the Bears on Saturday in front of a sellout crowd of 27,881 fans. Jacqueman threw for two touchdowns in the decisive first half, finishing 12 of 21 for 159 yards in the first half with scoring passes of 9 and 16 yards to Deryn Bowser. Akron rolled up 436 total yards, and finished the game with 186 passing yards, the most passing yards given up by Morgan State since surrendering 243 passing yards against Towson on Sept. 6, The Bears couldn t get anything going against Akron s defense, and penalties didn t help. MSU, who ranked 3rd in the MEAC last season (170 avg), finished with 41 rushing yards. MSU used four running backs during the contest, and All-MEAC running back Devan James, who only had one carry in the offseason, was limited to 10 carries for 24 yards. The Zips led 24-0 at halftime, outgained the Bears , and forced two fumbles and collected an interception. The only thing in question after the break was whether or not the Bears could avoid its first shutout since a 32-0 loss against South Carolina State on Nov. 15, MSU was also attempting to spoil the Zips first shutout victory since defeating Ohio 13-0 on Oct. 3, Bowser scored his third touchdown of the day on a fade route midway through the third quarter. Carlton Jackson was 10-of -19 for 87 yards for Morgan State, but threw two interceptions. Jackson s first interception helped set up the Zips first scoring drive of the contest in the first quarter. Akron followed that up by opening the second quarter with a score when Jacqueman completed a 16 yard touchdown pass to Bowser. Alex Allen capped an 8-play, 53 yard drive with a 1-yard run off tackle (9:37) and Branko Rogivic hit a 31-yard field goal to end first half scoring. Jackson was intercepted by middle linebacker Brian Wagner, who avoided a couple of tackles and raced 32-yards down the sideline for a touchdown. NEXT UP: WINSTON-SALEM STATE RAMS WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Florida A&M used a pair of LeRoy Vann punt returns for touchdowns as the Rattlers were the beneficiary of stellar special teams play en route to handing the Rams of Winston-Salem State University a defeat in front of 6,313 fans at Bowman Gray Stadium on Thursday evening in a nationally televised MEAC football grudge match. Vann s two punt returns for touchdown, his fourth and fifth career returns for a score, marked the first time in the history of the Florida A&M University football program that a Rattler player had managed that feat. The two punt returns for touchdown were part of a record-setting special teams evening for Vann who amassed 228 total return yards and a pair of touchdowns in the FAMU victory. Aside from Vann s two returns for scores the Rams and Rattlers were nearly even for the remainder of the contest as WSSU showed considerable improvement as they recorded 218 total offensive yards including 129 yards passing from redshirt quarterback Branden Williams who appeared in only his second career game. The Rams, a team that tallied only 90 yards of total offense in their first game of the season, stayed even with the high powered Rattlers, a team that was picked to finish second in the ultra-competitive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Rattlers struck first as Kevin Elliott pulled in a four yard Curtis Pulley pass at the 8:22 mark of the first quarter that capped a 13-play, 74-yard drive as Florida A&M pulled out to a 7-0 lead, a lead which they would never relinquish. The Rams responded with a drive of their own but were held to a field goal as WSSU settled for only three points following a 5:03 drive that marched 78 yards in 12 plays as the Rams cut the deficit to only four points with 3:19 to play in the contest s opening quarter. WSSU would get no closer than four points for the remainder of the evening as Vann recorded the Rattlers next two scores to put the game out of reach.
