With junior quarterback Andre Bevil throwing for a school-record 429 yards last Saturday, the Cardinals put a serious scare into the then 11th-ranked Cowboys. He completed 25 of 42 passes, including touchdown strikes of 26 yards to Marcus Jackson, 12 yards to Josh Powdrill and 4 yards to J.J. Hayes. In Webber International, coach Ray Woodard s Cardinals will be facing a squad enthused by a 2-0 start. The Warriors defeated Virginia Wise in their opener, and they held off Georgetown College Saturday afternoon. Lamar and Webber, an NAIA independent with an enrollment of 700 and located in Babson Park, Fla., will be meeting in football for the first time. The last time the Cardinals played at home, they scored 16 fourth-quarter points to rally for a victory over favored McNeese State in November of 1989, just a couple of weeks before the school s board of regents cast a 5-4 vote to discontinue the program due to a mounting deficit in its operation. Bevil s school record grows by three yards A review of Saturday night s game film against McNeese State showed that a third-quarter Lamar play that was originally recorded as a 3-yard rush by Josh Powdrill was actually a 3-yard shovel pass from quarterback Andre Bevil to Powdrill. With that correction, Bevil s final passing line reads 25-for-42 for 429 yards. The previous best passing performance in school history was Lamar s Single-Game Passing Yardage Leaders Name Opponent Yds. Andre Bevil McNeese St., Shad Smith La.-Monroe, John Evans UT-El Paso, Larry Haynes UTA, John Evans Angelo St., Fred Hessen UTA, John Evans McNeese St., John Evans McNeese St., Ray Campbell Houston, Tommy Tomlin La. Tech, Shad Smith Texas State, for 412 yards by Shad Smith in a 1987 game against Louisiana-Monroe. The added reception and yards increased Powdrill s game totals to five catches for 123 yards. Fellow wide receiver Marcus Jackson, who had six catches, also had 123 receiving yards. Resultingly the correction reduced Lamar s team rushing total to 17 yards on 15 carries. Andre had a fantastic game, but you haven t seen the best of Andre yet, said Ray Woodard, Lamar s head coach. He can do better than that.

After losing their first three homeopening games, the Cardinals went on to win 28 times and register one tie in their remaining 36 home debuts before the program was discontinued after the 1989 season. Lamar s overall home-opening record is Lamar s first home-opening win was a decision over Louisiana- Lafayette in After a 6-6 tie with Northwestern State in the 1956 home opener, the 1957 Cardinals defeated Louisiana-Lafayette to begin a streak of 11-consecutive home-opening victories. McNeese State snapped that streak by beating the Cardinals 10-0 in their 1968 home debut. The Cardinals were at their best on both sides of the ball in their last home debut as they overwhelmed Sam Houston State With Ed Hickey hauling in a 41-yard touchdown pass from John Evans, tailback Kenny Franklin sprinting 21 yards for a score and Waylon Patterson returning a blocked punt 13 yards for another, the Cardinals sprinted to a 21-0 first-quarter lead, and they were up 28-0 after Evans hit wide receiver Chris Ford with a 17-yard TD pass 2:08 in the second quarter. They did exactly that Saturday night in their season-opening loss at 11th-ranked McNeese State. While accumulating a school-record 429 passing yards, quarterback Andre Bevil lofted deep passes of 73 yards to Josh Powdrill, 63 yards to Kendrick Prejean and 57 yards to J.J. Hayes. The 57-yarder to Hayes set up Lamar s first touchdown, a 26-yard pass to Marcus Jackson to give the Cardinals a 7-3 first-quarter lead. The 73-yard pass to Powdrill put the Cardinals in position for Justin Stout s 31- yard field goal that pulled the Cardinals to within early in the third quarter. The 63-yarder to Prejean carried to the Cowboys one-yard line, setting up Bevil s eventual 4-yard TD toss to Hayes to register the final score. Both Jackson, who had six catches, and Powdrill, who had five, finished the game with 123 receiving yards to enable them to share the 10th-highest total in school history with Chris Ford of the 1989 team and Ronnie Gebauer of the 1968 Cardinals.
3 Quoting Woodard on the McNeese game: Head Coach Ray Woodard Ray Woodard is a huge man -- 6-foot-6 and 290 pounds, to be exact -- who has taken on a huge challenge -- that of reviving Lamar University s football program. Woodard s challenge is to return to Lamar, to Beaumont and to Southeast Texas the excitement that accompanies a competitive collegiate football team. Woodard was named the eighth football coach at Lamar University by President James Simmons and former Athletics Director Billy Tubbs on May 19, Woodard came to Lamar after three seasons at Navarro College - the first two as defensive coordinator and the final season as head coach. His 2007 squad went 9-3 and advanced to the conference playoffs for the first time in six seasons. His first Lamar team is off to a 0-1 start in the school s first season since Navarro beat defending national champion Blinn College on consecutive weeks before rolling past Kilgore - the SWJCFC regular-season champion - on the road to earn the school's first bowl bid since the 1990s. Navarro claimed a win over Georgia Military in the Pilgrim's Pride Bowl to finish the year ranked fourth in the NJCAA national poll. For his efforts, Woodard was named the SWJCFC Coach of the Year. From , Woodard served as the head football and track coach at Burton (Texas) High School, with the Panthers winning the district title in track in He spent two years as the defensive coordinator at Livingston (Texas) HS from and one season at Trinity HS in Trinity went 7-3 in Woodard spent four seasons as a defensive coordinator in NFL Europe, one season with the Frankfurt Galaxy and three with the Scottish Claymores. Woodard made a strong first impression in NFL Europe as his Galaxy ranked first in the league in total defense and led the league in five other defensive categories. Woodard's other professional coaching experience came as the general manager/head coach for the Houston Outlaws ( ) of the Regional Football League and as defensive coordintor of the Texas Terror (1996) of the Arena Football League. Woodard s first experience at the NCAA level came in 1998 when he was the defensive line coach at Louisiana-Lafayette. Lineman Danny Scott registered eight sacks, which ranks fourth in the ULL single-season list. From Woodard was the defensive coordinator at Kilgore College and recruited more than 200 Texas high school student-athletes. The Rangers appeared in back-to-back Shrine Bowls in 1989 and Kilgore had a 9-2 record in 1990, won the conference championship and was ranked as high as No. 6 in the country. Woodard also had a very successful playing career, from his days at Corrigan-Camden HS to Kilgore College and the University of Texas to five years in the NFL. After earning 13 letters in four sports at Corrigan-Camden High School from , Woodard was a two-time All-America selection as a defensive tackle at Kilgore College from The Rangers finished the 1980 season ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA rankings after posting a 10-1 record and winning the TJCFC Championship. Woodard then finished his college career at the University of Texas under coach Fred Akers. The 1982 team went 9-3 and finished the season ranked 17th nationally. As a senior in 1983, Woodard and the Longhorns posted a perfect 11-0 regular season mark, captured the Southwest Conference championship and finished the season ranked fifth in the nation. Texas led the nation in total defense, yielding just 212 ypg along with 9.5 ppg. Woodard was then selected in the eighth round of the 1984 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers. He spent the next five seasons with the Chargers, Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs. He was a member of the Broncos' 1986 AFC Champion and Super Bowl team. I knew we would play hard, but I wasn t thinking about setting any records, said Woodard. Andre had a fantastic game, but you haven t seen the best of Andre yet. That s not even close to what s going to be his best game. I m disappointed that we lost the game, but I m very proud of our effort. The butterflies went away pretty quickly, and I like the way we progressed as the game went along. With the receivers we have, I believe you re going to see even greater numbers out of our passing game. 4 Webber International head coach Kelly Scott Kelly Scott, a 1986 graduate of Indiana University, is in his fifth season as head coach at Webber International University. He posted an record in his first four seasons, and he has the Warriors off to an encouraging 2-0 start this fall. Prior to becoming head coach in 2006, Scott served the previous four seasons, as the Warriors defensive coordinator. He played his collegiate football as a dfensive back at Manchester (Indiana) College before transferring to Indiana to complete his bachelor of science degree in physical education. Scott began his coaching career at Speedway High School in Indianapolis, and he also spent time at Cathedral High School before relocating to Florida. He then spent six years as defensive coordinator at Lake Wales High School before becoming a graduate assistant at the University of South Carolina. He returned to Lake Wales HS for two years before becoming an inaugural member of the Webber International coaching staff in Webber International holds on for win Webber International bolted to a 27-6 advantage through the first three quarters Saturday afternoon then held on for a home victory over Georgetown College. In moving to 2-0 on the season, the Warriors received two touchdowns from running back Deonte Fielder and one each from quarterback Torrance Moise and running back Taylor Atwood. Fielder scored on a 1-yard run and a 13-yard pass from Moise, who also had a 9-yard scoring run. Atwood s touchdown came on a 4-yard run. Looking Ahead After playing Webber International in their home opener Saturday night, the Cardinals will return to the road for their second taste of Southland Conference competition. They will challenge Southeastern Louisiana at 6 p.m. on Sept. 18, in Hammond s 7,408-seat Strawberry Stadium. The Lions, who went 6-5 last season, dropped their season opener at Tulane last week, 27-21, and they are hosting Tennessee Martin this week. The Lions accumulated 266 yards of total offense (64 rushing and 202 passing) against Tulane, and they held the Green Wave to 252 yards, the fewest allowed by any Southland Conference team last week. Zeke Jones was the Lions rushing leader with 61 yards on 12 carries, and Tyler Beatty 17 of 34 passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns. Lamar and Southeastern Louisiana have met twice in football with each school notching a home victory. The Cardinals prevailed in Beaumont in 1967, and the Lions took a squeaker in Hammond two years later. Lamar quarterback Tommy Tomlin completed 15 of 33 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns in that game. Pat Gibbs had two TD receptions, and Ronnie Gebauer had one.
