3 THIS WEEK S MATCH-UP The Western Michigan football team returns to Kalamazoo after winning two straight Mid-American Conference games on the road when it hosts the 91st Homecoming Game in program history, taking on the Ohio Bobcats of the MAC East. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Waldo Stadium. > This will be the 60th all-time meeting between the Broncos and the Bobcats, with WMU owning a advantage over Ohio in the all-time series. This will be the first time the two teams have met since Oct. 4, 2008, a game the Broncos won in Kalamazoo. The last Bobcat win in the series came two years prior, a decision in Athens on Oct. 7, Ohio has not won a game in Kalamazoo since Sept. 26, INSTANT THREE-PLAY Freshman running back Jarvion Franklin has made a habit of producing big games week in and week out. Thanks to his performance against Bowling Green rushing yards and a touchdown in the Broncos win - he was honored as the MAC West Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season. On the year, at least one Bronco player has earned their respective MAC weekly award in six of seven total weeks of play. > Franklin s rushing touchdown in the second half against Bowling Green gave him 16 total scores on the season, keeping him in the national lead in Division I FBS. Ameer Abdullah (Nebraska) is second with 14. > Franklin is sixth overall in the nation in rushing with an average of yards per game. That ranks first among all freshman rushers in the country, and is nearly 30 yards more per game than second place (Nick Wilson, Arizona ypg). With 992 total rushing yards, Franklin is on pace to become the first Bronco since Brandon West in 2009 to break the 1,000-yard mark. GROUND TO A HALT It took a team effort from both sides of the football, but the Broncos were able to shut out the potent Bowling Green offense in the second half on Saturday. Defensive highlights from the second half included a goal-line stand on the Falcons first drive that prevented BGSU from putting any points on the board, as well as forcing four three-and-outs on the team s next five drives. The offense did its part by controlling the clock in the second half. WMU out-possessed the Falcons 21:08 to 8:52 in the second half, and held onto the ball for an incredible 13:08 in the fourth quarter alone. > The Broncos performance in the second half against Bowling Green represented the first time since Sept. 14, 2013 that the Falcons failed to score in any half. They were shut out by Indiana in the second half of a Hoosier win in Bloomington. TURNOVER TURNAROUND One of the keys to the Broncos turnaround from last season to this one has been its improvement in protecting the football. Last year the Broncos finished -8 in turnover margin, which placed them next-to-last in the MAC. This year, the Broncos have undergone a massive shift and now rank third in the MAC with a +3 turnover margin. > WMU ranks ninth in Division I FBS with a total of only six turnovers lost this year. The only MAC team to turn the ball over fewer times is Northern Illinois, with five turnovers. #RTB TRIPLE THREAT The passing game has kicked it up a notch in 2014, as WMU has a trio of receiving weapons that have caused headaches for opposing defensive coordinators all year long. Since the start of conference play, three Broncos are averaging better than 61.0 yards receiving per game: Corey Davis (115.0), Darius Phillips (80.7), and Daniel Braverman (61.0). All three of those receivers have scored a pair of touchdowns in three MAC games played, as well. > Davis ranks second in the conference with an overall average of receiving yards per game, and his total of five receiving touchdowns ranks second as well. He has recorded one score through the air in all but one game this season. SWISS ARMY KNIFE Darius Phillips has been a gamebreaker this season, with the speedy redshirt freshman attacking opponents in different ways to spark the Broncos. Phillips has topped 152 all-purpose yards in each of the last three games, including a season-high 174 against Ball State. As far as big plays go, in the last three weeks he has recorded touchdown receptions of 63 and 46 yards, as well as a 52-yard reverse that led to the Bronco touchdown on the next play. STELLAR DEBUT Franklin s 163 yards on the ground against Purdue rank second in program history for a freshman making his collegiate debut; the great Jerome Persell had 244 yards against Eastern Michigan on Sept. 11, CALL HIM MR. CONSISTENCY Zach Terrell has been incredibly efficient running the offense this year, and ranks among the best quarterbacks in the country in passing efficiency and accuracy. Terrell is 24th in Division I FBS and second in the MAC with a passing efficiency ranking, and his 65.7 completion percentage ranks 20th in the nation and first in the MAC. Terrell has done an excellent job taking care of the football this year, throwing 12 touchdown passes to just four interceptions so far. In fact, those 12 touchdown passes (in seven games) are more than he threw all of last year, when he made six starts and played nine games. LONG RANGE STRIKE Another factor in the Broncos successful offensive attack this year has been the ability to notch the big play. WMU has recorded 50 plays of 20 or more yards this season. That is already approaching last year s total (57), and the total of 14 scoring plays of 20 yards or more is six more than the Broncos totaled all of last season. IN DEPALMA YOUR HAND Junior walk-on linebacker Grant DePalma has gone from a member of the scout team to the Broncos leading tackler, and is among the top tacklers in both the MAC and the NCAA. DePalma is averaging 9.1 tackles per game, a number that ranks seventh in the conference and 42nd nationally. HIGHLY TOUTED CLASS BOLSTERS BRONCOS The news officially came on Feb. 5 that the Western Michigan football team had produced the highest-rated recruiting class in the history of the Mid-American Conference. The Broncos class ranked 57th in the nation, marking the first time that a MAC school had landed a recruiting class in the top-60 in the nation, and was also the first time a Bronco recruiting class led the MAC since returning TIGHT ENDS STATS Eric Boyden Eric Boyden Career Mario Rodriguez Mario Rodriguez Career returning OFFENSIVE LINEMEN STATS Willie Beavers 2013 GP-GS Plays Avg. 4 wmu football game notes ohio GAME 8 > According to Rivals.com rankings, the Broncos secured 14 three-star recruits on Signing Day, more than twice as many as any other conference program. WELCOME, FRESHMEN It s been no secret that WMU intends to give its sizable freshman class a chance to prove itself early on, and the release of the team s opening two-deep depth chart illustrates that point clearly. There were 18 players with freshman eligibility that are listed as either a starter or the primary back-up at their positions for the start of the season. DAVIS NAMED TO BILETNIKOFF LIST Corey Davis was a dominant force for the Broncos at the receiver position last season, leading all freshman at the FBS level in receiving yards (941) and receiving yards per game average (85.5), and set a number of WMU freshmen records in the process. Now, the sophomore is being considered for one of the top honors in the country. It was announced earlier this year that Davis was named to the Biletnikoff Award Preseason Watch List, given annually to the top wide receiver in the nation. Davis is one of just five sophomores to be on the list. Davis was named a 2013 Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America and College Football News after setting WMU freshman record for receiving yards (941), receptions (67), and 100-yard games (5) CELISCAR NAMED TO THORPE WATCH LIST Senior Donald Celiscar became one of five Broncos named to a preseason awards watch list this year when he was added to the Jim Thorpe Award Preseason Watch List., an award given annually to the best defensive back in college football. One 2014 wmu football media calendar - OHIO week of just 34 players on the list, Celiscar was tied for the team lead in interceptions last season with three and was also named Second Team All-MAC. He also had nine pass breakups and 60 tackles after starting all 12 games. HOFFING ADDED TO RIMINGTON WATCH LIST The centerpiece of the Broncos veteran offensive line, Jon Hoffing was named to the Rimington Award Preseason Watch List, given annually to the best center in college football. Hoffing started every game for the Broncos last season, and has maded 13 starts in his career. PAIR OF BRONCO SPECIALISTS HONORED BY CFPA Two members of the Broncos special teams - kicker Andrew Haldeman and punter J. Schroeder - were honored by the College Football Performance Awards in their preseason positional watch lists. Haldeman was named to the CFPA Kickers Preseason Watch List, while Schroeder was added to the CFPA Punters Preseason Watch list. TERRELL NOMINATED FOR GOOD WORKS TEAM The American Football Coaches Association announced a record-breaking 182 nominees from across the country for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, with Zach Terrell among those nominated for the honor. He is one of just 90 players from Division I FBS nominated to the team. Terrell s has contributed his time to a number of youth projects in the area, volunteering at area schools and working with the children there, and also took charge of the team effort to visit lineman teammate Josh Bass when he took ill and was hospitalized during the spring.
